A novel approach was developed to prepare a superporous hydrogel with superior mechanical and elastic properties. According to this method, a synthetic monomer was polymerized and crosslinked in the presence of a water-soluble alginate polymer. Later in the process, the alginate part of the synthesized hydrogel was treated with metal cations, which resulted in a hydrogel hybrid with an interpenetrating network structure. In this article, a hydrogel hybrid of acrylamide and alginate is highlighted because of its unique swelling and mechanical properties. This hydrogel hybrid shows resilience and a rubbery property in its fully water-swollen state, which not previously been reported. To help understand the underlying mechanism responsible for such unique properties with hydrogel hybrids, the ionotropic gelation of the alginate polymer was also studied in more detail.  相似文献

Poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG)‐based interpenetrating polymeric network (IPN) hydrogels were prepared for the application of enzyme immobilization. Poly(acrylamide)(PAAm) was chosen as the other network of IPN hydrogel and different concentration of PAAm networks were incorporated inside the PEG hydrogel to improve the mechanical strength and provide functional groups that covalently bind the enzyme. Formation of IPN hydrogels was confirmed by observing the weight per cent gain of hydrogel after incorporation of PAAm network and by attenuated total reflectance/Fourier transform infrared (ATR/FTIR) analysis. Synthesis of IPN hydrogels with higher PAAm content produced more crosslinked hydrogels with lower water content (WC), smaller Mc and mesh size, which resulted in enhanced mechanical properties compared to the PEG hydrogel. The IPN hydrogels exhibited tensile strength between 0.2 and 1.2 MPa while retaining high levels of hydration (70–81% water). For enzyme immobilization, glucose oxidase (GOX) was immobilized to PEG and IPN hydrogel beads. Enzyme activity studies revealed that although all the hydrogels initially had similar enzymatic activity, enzyme‐immobilizing PEG hydrogels lost most of the enzymatic activity within 2 days due to enzyme leaching while IPN hydrogels maintained a maximum 80% of the initial enzymatic activity over a week due to the covalent linkage between the enzyme and amine groups of PAAm. Polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyacrylamide (PAAm) double network (DN) hydrogels with high mechanical strength (about 1.5 MPa) are obtained when two kinds of monomer solutions of 4M AA with 5 mol% crosslinker and 4M AAm with 0.1 mol% crosslinker are used for the optimal preparation. Their high mechanical strength can be maintained even at high water content (above 50%) and at external stimuli (solvent and pH). This optimized DN hydrogel is used to develop the PAA/PAAm inverse opal hydrogel with DN structure by twice infiltration-polymerization and colloidal templating. Its photonic stop band can be tuned by controlling the solvent and pH. It first shows a small red-shift (about 20 nm), and then a large blue-shift (about 180 nm) with the increased ethanol content. For pH response, the DN inverse opal hydrogel has a large stop-band shift of about 140 nm when the pH increases from 1.2 to 5.6. Moreover, the DN inverse opal hydrogel also shows rapid recovery ability without hysteresis phenomenon in strong acidic environment, good reproducibility and durability. The interaction between the independently crosslinked PAA network and PAAm network plays a significant role in determining the response performance.  相似文献

Novel phosphorescent hydrogels have been explored by immobilizing an IrIII metal complex into the matrices of hydrogels. FTIR spectra demonstrate that the IrIII–PNaAMPS hydrogel is achieved by irreversible incorporation of positively charged [Ir(ppy)2(dmbpy)]Cl (ppy = 2‐phenylpyrine, dmbpy = 4,4′‐dimethyl‐2,2′‐bipyridine) into negatively charged poly(2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropane sulfonic acid sodium) (PNaAMPS) hydrogel via electrostatic interaction. The photoluminescent spectra indicate that the IrIII–PNaAMPS hydrogel exhibits stable phosphorescence. In vitro cultivation of human retinal pigment epithelial cells demonstrates the cytocompatibility of the IrIII–PNaAMPS hydrogel. This work herein represents a facile pathway for fabrication of phosphorescent hydrogels.  相似文献

Three series of semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks, based on crosslinked poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPA) and 1 wt % nonionic or ionic (cationic and anionic) linear polyacrylamide (PAAm), were synthesized to improve the mechanical properties of PNIPA gels. The effect of the incorporation of linear polymers into responsive networks on the temperature‐induced transition, swelling behavior, and mechanical properties was studied. Polymer networks with four different crosslinking densities were prepared with various molar ratios (25:1 to 100:1) of the monomer (N‐isopropyl acrylamide) to the crosslinker (methylenebisacrylamide). The hydrogels were characterized by the determination of the equilibrium degree of swelling at 25 °C, the compression modulus, and the effective crosslinking density, as well as the ultimate hydrogel properties, such as the tensile strength and elongation at break. The introduction of cationic and anionic linear hydrophilic PAAm into PNIPA networks increased the rate of swelling, whereas the presence of nonionic PAAm diminished it. Transition temperatures were significantly affected by both the crosslinking density and the presence of linear PAAm in the hydrogel networks. Although anionic PAAm had the greatest influence on increasing the transition temperature, the presence of nonionic PAAm caused the highest dimensional change. Semi‐interpenetrating polymer networks reinforced with cationic and nonionic PAAm exhibited higher tensile strengths and elongations at break than PNIPA hydrogels, whereas the presence of anionic PAAm caused a reduction in the mechanical properties. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel polyacrylamide/polyacrylic acid (PAAm/PAA) double network (DN) nanocomposite (NC) hydrogel had been synthesized by two‐step solution polymerization. The PAAm network was crosslinked by inorganic clay while the PAA network was crosslinked by a chemical crosslinker. The chemical structure of the network was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The swelling and mechanical strength properties of PAAm/PAA hydrogels were examined. The results showed that a DN hydrogel achieved both a high swelling capacity of 1219 g/g in deionized water and 124 g/g in 0.9 wt% NaCl solution and high compressive stress of 21.5 kPa in a high water content of 99.58%. Blend films of sodium alginate and polyacrylamide (PAAm) were prepared by mixing the aqueous solution of both samples at a different ratio. All blend films obtained are optically clear to the naked eye. The structure and physical properties of the films were studied by FT-infrared (FT-IR), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential thermal analysis (DTA), thermogravimetic analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and tensile strength test. The results showed that the occurrence of interactions between -COO?, -OH groups of sodium alginate and -CONH2 groups of PAAm in the blends through hydrogen formation. The blend films exhibited the higher thermal stability and improved mechanical properties in dry states. These properties had the maximum value around 20 wt% PAAm content in the blend film. The morphological transition of the blend films from sodium alginate-like to PAAm-like was observed by scanning electron microscopy.  相似文献

Herein, copper ion doped calcium alginate(Cu~(2+)/CaAlg) composite hydrogel filtration membranes were prepared by using natural polymer sodium alginate(NaAlg) as raw material. The thermal stability and structure of the composite membranes were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The mechanical strength,anti-fouling performance, hydrophilicity and filtration performance of the membrane were studied. The results show that Cu~(2+)/CaAlg hydrogel membrane has excelle nt mechanical properties and thermal stability. The anti-swelling ability of the membrane was greatly enhanced by doping Cu~(2+).After three alternate filtration cycles, the flux recovery rate of Cu~(2+)/CaAlg hydrogel membrane can still reach 85%,indicating that the membrane has good antipollution performance. When the operation pressure was 0.1 MPa,the rejection of coomassie brilliant blue G250 reached 99.8% with a flux of 46.3 L m ~2 h ~1,while the Na_2 SO_4 rejection was less than 10.0%.The Cu~(2+)/CaAlg membrane was recycled after 24 h in the filtration process, and its flux and rejection rate did not decrease significantly, indicating that the hydrogel membrane has long-term application potential. The Cu~(2+)/CaAlg membrane has a wide range of applications prospect in dye desalination, fine separation and biopharmaceutical technology fields.  相似文献

Photoluminescent hydrogels have emerged as novel soft materials with potential applications in many fields. Although many photoluminescent hydrogels have been fabricated, their scope of usage has been severely limited by their poor mechanical performance. Here, a facile strategy is reported for preparing lanthanide (Ln)‐alginate/polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogels with both high toughness and photoluminescence, which has been achieved by doping Ln3+ ions (Ln = Eu, Tb, Eu/Tb) into alginate/PAAm hydrogel networks, where Ln3+ ions serve as both photoluminescent emitters and physical cross‐linkers. The resulting hydrogels exhibit versatile advantages including excellent mechanical properties (∼MPa strength, ≈20 tensile strains, ≈104 kJ m−3 energy dissipation), good photoluminescent performance, tunable emission color, excellent processability, and cytocompatibility. The developed tough photoluminescent hydrogels hold great promises for expanding the usage scope of hydrogels.

We present a novel approach to the fabrication of advanced polymeric nanocomposite hydrogels from polyacrylamide (PAAm) by incorporation of graphene‐silver‐polyethylenedioxythiophene‐polystyrene sulfonate (rGO‐Ag‐PEDOT/PSS) by photopolymerization method. Infrared spectroscopy was employed to characterize the structure of the hydrogels. The internal network structure of nanocomposite hydrogels was investigated by scanning electron microscope. Swelling, deswelling, and mechanical properties of the hydrogels were investigated. The compressive strength of nanocomposite hydrogels reaches maximum of 1.71 MPa when the ratio of rGO‐Ag‐PEDOT/PSS to PAAm was 0.3 wt%, which is 1.57 times higher than that of PAAm hydrogels (1.09 MPa). The electrical conductivity of the PAAm‐rGO‐Ag‐PEDOT/PSS hydrogel was found to be 3.91 × 10?5 S cm?1. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Composite materials containing drugs were prepared from silicone rubber and hydrogel. Cross linked polyacrylamide (PAAm) hydrogel particles were incorporated into a silicone rubber to enhance the hydrophilicity and drug release capacity of silicone rubber as a matrix. Progesterone and Thymol Blue were used as a hydrophobic and hydrophilic drug model, respectively. Different amounts of polyacrylamide (PAAm) were mixed with the drugs and uncured silicone rubber at room temperature. The composite matrices were formed using a compression molding press and cured by thermal and γ-irradiation curing methods. In vitro drug release behavior of composites and their physical and mechanical properties were investigated. The results indicated that the hydrophilic character of silicone rubber was more pronounced with increasing the amount of PAAm. Also, a significant effect on the drug release profiles was observed. The γ-irradiation curing method improved mechanical properties of composites and affected the drug release profiles. It was found that the amounts of released progesterone from γ-irradiated samples increased in comparison with the thermally cross linked composite since released Thymol Blue was reduced.  相似文献

Injectable hydrogels have been considered as promising materials for bone regeneration, but their osteoinduction and mechanical performance are yet to be improved. In this study,a novel biocompatible injectable and self-healing nano hybrid hydrogel was on-demand prepared via a fast(within 30 s) and easy gelation approach by reversible Schiff base formed between-CH=O of oxidized sodium alginate(OSA) and-NH_2 of glycol chitosan(GCS) mixed with calcium phosphate nanoparticles(CaP NPs).Its raw materials can be ready in large quantities by a simple synthesis process. The mechanical strength, degradation and swelling behavior of the hydrogel can be readily controlled by simply controlling the molar ratio of-CH=O and-NH_2.This hydrogel exhibits pH responsiveness, good degradability and biocompatibility. The hydrogel used as the matrix for mesenchymal stem cells can significantly induce the proliferation, differentiation and osteoinduction in vitro. These results showed this novel hydrogel is an ideal candidate for applications in bone tissue regeneration and drug delivery.  相似文献

Polymer nanocomposite gels (NC gels), a kind of typical soft materials, can be synthesized through free-radical polymerization of water-soluble monomers in the presence of nanoclay in aqueous system. Here, novel natural tube-like nanoparticles, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), are firstly used as multifunctional cross-linkers for polyacrylamide (PAAm) to form a new type of organic/inorganic hybrid hydrogels. Significant improvements in mechanical properties of the PAAm-HNTs NC gels are found by the addition of HNTs as shown by the static mechanical testing and dynamic viscoelasticity measurement. HNTs are uniformly dispersed in the NC gels from the morphological result. HNTs can be intercalated by PAAm chains as observed by the X-ray diffraction result. Hydrogen bonding interactions between HNTs and PAAm are confirmed by the infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The maximum equilibrium degree of swelling (EDS) for the NC gel is 4000% and the EDS decreases with the concentration of clay nanotubes. The present work provides a novel routine for preparing NC gels using “green” one-dimensional nanoparticle. The prepared NC gels have promising application in biomedical areas due to the superior mechanical properties of the gels and good biocompatibility of HNTs.  相似文献

Hydrogels consisting of interpenetrating networks of ionically and covalently crosslinked polymers showed high toughness and mechanical recoverability as a result of the dissociation and re‐formation of ionic crosslinks. The present investigation aimed to provide a quantitative study on the mechanical recoverability and damage process of an example hybrid gel of calcium crosslinked alginate and covalently crosslinked polyacrylamide. Three series of load/unload tests were performed sequentially with the mechanical properties of the gel fully retrieved between the 2nd and 3rd load/unload series while only the partial recovery of mechanical properties was evident from the 1st to 2nd series. The load/unload curves in the three series were modeled by existing mechanical models, and the fitted model parameters clearly demonstrate a damage process for the hybrid gel. When a hybrid gel was deformed above its historic maximum strain, the shortest alginate chains were fully‐stretched, pulling apart the weak ionic crosslinks and dissipating fracture energy. Consequently, the strand density of the intact gel network was reduced and the contour length of the remaining next‐shortest load‐bearing alginate chains became longer. A log‐normal distribution was used to describe the probability distribution for the strand fracture and also to describe the strand length distribution of the ionic network. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrogels are encouraging for different clinical purposes because of their high water absorption and mechanical relation to native tissues. Injectable hydrogels can modify the invasiveness of utilization, which decreases recovery and surgical costs. Principal designs applied to create injectable hydrogels incorporate in situ formation owing to chemical or/and physical crosslinking. Here, we report nontoxic, thermosensitive, injectable hydrogels composed of gelatin (GEL) and oxidized alginate (OA) reinforced by silicon carbide nanoparticles (SiC NPs) and crosslinked with N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) and 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC). The mechanical characteristics of the hydrogels were examined via rheological analysis. The outcomes reveal that extending the SiC NPs contents enhances the mechanical properties around five times. The cross-sectional microstructure of the scaffolds comprising 0.25, 1.0, and 1.5% SiC NPs was scrutinized by FESEM, verifying porous structure with interconnected pores. Because of the smaller pore sizes in the hydrogels, the swelling rate has reduced at the higher content of SiC, which diminishes the water uptake. Additionally, the biodegradation study unveils that the hydrogels with SiC are more long-lasting than the hydrogel without SiC. By adding SiC NPs, a decrease is observed in the biodegradation and swelling ratio. The scaffold with a higher SiC NPs content (1.5%) manifested better cell attachment and was less cytotoxic than hydrogel without SiC. OA/GEL composites embedded SiC NPs have manifested excellent physical properties for tissue engineering in comparison with hydrogel without nanoparticles.  相似文献

The development of hydrogels as skin dressings demonstrates a great potential in real life applications. To achieve this, the hydrogel has to conquer its natural poor mechanical strength, and to prolong its lifetime, antifatigue and self-healing properties originating from dynamic interactions are also required. As skin dressings, the hydrogel needs to maintain its ductility while pursuing the above mentioned properties. In this work, poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate is used to produce skin dressings by reinforcing poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate/alginate double network hydrogels with a crosslinker from mussel-inspired chemistry, which is 3,4-dihydroxy-l-phenylalanine. This crosslinking methodology significantly improved mechanical strength of the hydrogel, with 11,200% increase in compressive failure strength; it endowed the hydrogel with outstanding antifatigue and training strengthening properties that makes its mechanical strength increasing in a 50 cycles compressive test; the hydrogel showed excellent self-healing properties that in rheological characterization; it also displayed enhanced storage modulus after withstanding a shear strain up to 1100%; meanwhile, the hydrogel exhibited extreme ductility with an elastic modulus of only 10.90–16.53 kPa. 3,4-dihydroxy-l-phenylalanine also renders the hydrogel its inherent antioxidant activity, conductivity, and bioadhesiveness. Together with the highly transparent appearance, the hydrogels possess a great potential and practibility in the fields of skin dressings.  相似文献

Hydrogels are interesting as wound dressing for burn wounds to maintain a moist environment. Especially gelatin and alginate based wound dressings show strong potential. Both polymers are modified by introducing photocrosslinkable functionalities and combined to hydrogel films (gel‐MA/alg‐MA). In one protocol gel‐MA films are incubated in alg‐MA solutions and crosslinked afterward into double networks. Another protocol involves blending both and subsequent photocrosslinking. The introduction of alginate into the gelatin matrix results in phase separation with polysaccharide microdomains in a protein matrix. Addition of alg(‐MA) to gel‐MA leads to an increased swelling compared to 100% gelatin and similar to the commercial Aquacel Ag dressing. In vitro tests show better cell adhesion for films which have a lower alginate content and also have superior mechanical properties. The hydrogel dressings exhibit good biocompatibility with adaptable cell attachment properties. An adequate gelatin‐alginate ratio should allow application of the materials as wound dressings for several days without tissue ingrowth.  相似文献

Double-network hydrogels (DN-gels) prepared from the combination of a moderately cross-linked anionic polyelectrolyte (PE) and an uncross-linked linear polymer solution (NP) exhibit mechanical properties such as fracture toughness that are intriguingly superior to that of their individual constituents. The scheme of double-network preparation, however, is not equally successful for all polyelectrolyte/neutral polymer pairs. A successful example is the combination of poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid) (PAMPS) cross-linked network and linear polyacrylamide (PAAm), which results in DN-gels with fracture strength under compression approaching that of articular cartilage ( approximately 20 MPa). Small-angle neutron scattering was used to determine the thermodynamic interaction parameters for PAMPS and PAAm in water as a first step to elucidate the molecular origin responsible for this superior property. Measurements on PAMPS/PAAm DN-gels and their solution blend counterparts indicate that the two polymers interact favorably with each other while in water. This favorable PAMPS/PAAm interaction given by the condition chi(PE-NP) < chi(PE-water) 相似文献
