Summary The radioactivity of water and sediments from the Sava river in the course through Serbia during 2001-2003 has been examined by alpha- and gamma-ray spectrometry. Except for cesium originating from Chernobyl, the radioactivity level of water and sediment coincide with the content of natural radionuclides in the environment of the river basin. Distribution coefficients as well as the runoff coefficient were determined for 137Cs.  相似文献

U, Th and Ra isotopic activities have been measured in water and sediment samples collected over three years from the Guadalquivir river channel (South of Spain). The study of the radioactivity levels and activity ratios evolution in space and time has provided information on the behavior of the radionuclides mentioned above in the estuarine and non-estuarine zones of the river.  相似文献

River sediment depositions on the bottom of rivers most frequently consist of sand and gravel particles, which make them particularly valuable for the building construction. Knowledge of radioactivity present in building material enables one to assess any possible radiological hazard to mankind by the use of such materials. The natural radionuclide (238U, 232Th and 40K) contents have been analyzed for the recently excavated sediment samples of Cauvery, Vellar, Ponnaiyar and Palaru rivers with an aim of evaluating the radiation hazard nature. To know the radiological characteristics of the sediment, the different radiological parameters are calculated. Natural radioactivity level is higher in Palaru river and it is lower in Vellar river sediments. In all the rivers, concentration of 238U is decreased, and concentrations of 232Th and 40K are increased towards the river mouth. Granulometric analysis shows that the sand is the main constituent in all the river sediment samples. Content of sand is gradually decreased, and contents of silt and clay are gradually increased towards the river mouth. Cluster analysis was carried out to find the similarity level between the radioactivity and granulometric measurements. The radioactivity level of all the four river sediments mainly depends upon the contents of silt and clay. Averages of the all calculated radiation hazard indices are lower than recommended level in Cauvery, Vellar and Ponnaiyar river sediments. Therefore, the sediment of the above rivers does not pose any significant radiological threat to the population when it is used as a building construction material.  相似文献

A study is presented on the distribution of thorium and radium isotopes in sediments, suspended matter and water collected along Jucar river (East of Spain), using low-level α-spectrometry. The first aim of this work is to study the thorium and radium activity in water, sediment and suspended matter and their dependence on pH, temperature, conductivity and sediment sizes along Jucar river. The analysis of activity variation with these parameters will provide information about the dynamics of these radionuclides in rivers. The values obtained for the distribution factors between suspended matter and water (K d ) are also discussed.  相似文献

A horizontal transport of radionuclides was studied by the analysis of the radioactivity of the surface soil samples from valleys of Wieprz river and its bottom sediments. Natural gamma-isotopes (40K, 238U and 232Th series) antropogenic (134Cs and 137Cs) and alpha-isotopes 238Pu and 239,240Pu were measured. The different kind of bed rock and terrain configuration, influenced the radionuclide transportation from the soil to river bottom sediments. Radioactivity of the sediment samples is definitely lower than the soils. Very strong adsorption of isotopes in soil hinders their horizontal migration. Calculated 238Pu/239,240Pu ratio is characteristic for global fallout and about 90% of the 137Cs comes from Chernobyl.  相似文献

The measurements of natural radioactivity due to thorium isotopes have been carried out in estuarine sediments of Mandovi river (Goa). The geochemical behaviour of these sediments has been studied by leaching the samples with 5 % ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid at pH 3.0 in order to investigate the processes occurring on the surface of the sediment particles and the distribution of natural thorium in estuarine sediments. The228Th/232Th activity ratios have been found to be in the range of 2.00 to 2.12. This anomaly between232Th and228Th has been attributed to the preferential leaching of228Ra by water flowing over these sediments. The activities of228Ra on the surface labile layers of the sediments have also been determined. The230Th/232Th activity ratios have been found to be in the range of 0.94 to 1.04. These ratios are mainly dependent on the precipitation action of230Th on adjacent sediments.  相似文献

New data on the concentrations of the main gamma-emitting radionuclides, minor and trace elements, and isotopes of uranium (with Ra-226 as a daughter product of U-238) and thorium in soils and sediments of the Shu valley (from the river Chon-Kemin to the river Kuragatty downstream the river Shu) are presented, determined by high-resolution gamma-spectrometry, k 0-instrumental neutron activation analysis and alpha-spectrometry with appropriate radiochemical separations of the samples, respectively. The results obtained showed an aquatic migration pathway of most of the trace elements and radionuclides and predicted water pollution downstream the river Shu. The scandium method showed pollution by As, Br, Ca, Cr, Zr of the Tasotkel dam impoundment and by Ca and Cr of the river Shu below its confluence with the river Kuragatty. According to the disequilibrium isotopic method for uranium (using the isotopic ratio U-234/U-238), areas with accumulation and leaching processes were estimated for soils and sediments of the river Shu and its main inflows.  相似文献

Determination of natural radioactivity in Euphrates river   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Levels of naturally occuring radionuclides (radium isotopes, U isotopes, 210Po and 210Pb) in water, sediments and biota samples collected from Euphrates river during the 1999–2000 period have been determined. Results have shown that the water contained relatively high levels of 226Ra; the largest value of 1150 mBq·l–1 was observed. These relatively high levels of 226Ra, which is one of the main radioactive contaminants in the oil industry, may be due to past discharges of production water from the oil fields situated near the river banks. 226Ra/238U activity ratio was found to be more than unity in all water samples varying between 13 and 242. In addition, the results of sediment analyses have also shown lower values for 228Ra/226Ra activity ratio than unity in those samples collected nearby the oil fields. Moreover, concentrations of other naturally occurring radionuclides such as uranium isotopes, 210Po and 210Pb for most samples (water, sediments and biota) were found to be within the natural levels and in agreement with those values reported for other local and international studies. Only mussel species were found to contain high levels of 210Po, about 1335 Bq·kg–1 dry mass was observed in Anodonta sp species. However, the results of this study can be considered a baseline for monitoring of future changes. A regional research project (including Turkey, Syria and Iraq) to study this river (from the Anatolia Mountains to the Arabian Gulf) is necessary to determine the impact of all potential sources of contaminants. This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The distribution of some natural and anthropogenic radionuclides (226Ra,228Ra,210Po,40K,137Cs) in surface marine sediments from the harbours at Port Sudan and Sawakin on the Sudanese coast of the Red Sea has been investigated using α-spectrometry and direct high-resolution γ-spectrometry. The prime ams were to assess the levels of radioactivity and the influence of factors such as dredging and the organic matter content of the sediments on the distribution pattern of the radionuclides. The results have been evaluated and the leves indicate the absence of any possible enhancement by anthropogenic influx from the hinterland. The spatial distribution pattern is more heterogeneous in Sawakin harbour where some parts have recently been dredged and the sludge is removed to maintain the required depth. The data also show an insignificant relationship between the activity concentrations of all the radionuclides and the content of organic matter in the sediments.  相似文献

Metals are perceived as pollutants but they are also natural substances found in the environment. The surface water environment is under the influence of continuing industrial pollution/effluents. Therefore it is necessary to determine various metal forms present in each component of the water ecosystem. The study presents analysis for Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, Zn and Pb content in the Bobrza River bottom deposits and water. The analysis of water and sediment samples from the Bobrza River taken from the littoral zone at three sampling points: the riverhead, i.e. the natural environment; Białogon — the acidic environment; and Sitkówka-Nowiny — the alkaline environment, were analyzed. Sample quality indicators were defined with pH value, conductivity, heavy metal content for water and suspended matter samples. The metal forms in river sediment were also analyzed. The sediment samples were subjected to Tessier’s five-stage sequential extraction procedure assisted by microwave radiation. Analyte concentration in water samples and in the extracts was determined with the use of F-AAS and GF-AAS techniques. The results obtained reveal a relationship between land development, the degree of metal bonding with suspended matter and metal forms found in river sediments.  相似文献

River water and sediment samples were collected at the same site in a vicinity of an abandoned mine, and the concentrations of major elements and heavy metals were determined. The chemical correlations were observed by principal component analysis (PCA), and the samples were classified by cluster analysis (CA) based on the PCA scores. The PCA results presented a macroscopic viewpoint of covariance structure, i.e., the chemical elements could be classified into three groups: 1) major elements and heavy metals in the river water, 2) Cd, Fe and Mn in the sediments, and 3) Cu and Zn in the sediments. The CA results implied a similarity of chemical compositions in most parts of the study area, except the ranges close to the abandoned copper mine. At the mixing location of mining water with natural river water, major elements and cadmium showed simple physical mixing (conservative mixing). Other heavy metals (Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) showed the massive precipitation at the mixing event. The PCA structure was mainly interpreted in terms of the mixing process between mining water and diluted natural river water.  相似文献

The Baltic Sea is ecologically unique as one of the world’s largest brackish water basins. It was significantly contaminated by radioactivity following the Chernobyl accident in 1986, the major contaminant being long-lived 137Cs. Due to the slow exchange of water between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea and the relatively rapid sedimentation rates, radionuclides have prolonged residence times in the Baltic Sea. 137Cs levels are consequently still clearly higher than in other water bodies around the world. In addition to the Chernobyl accident, artificial radionuclides in the Baltic Sea originate from the global fallout following nuclear weapons testing in the 1950s and 1960s, while discharges into the Baltic Sea from nuclear power plants and other facilities are of minor importance. Here, inventories and the temporal evolution of radionuclides both in seawater and sediments of the Baltic Sea are presented and discussed.  相似文献

This paper presents an improved radiochemical procedure for the determination of alpha-emitting Pu isotopes in environmental samples (soils, sediments, vegetation) by alpha-particle spectrometry. Quantitative Pu recovery yields were obtained (average 60%), 0.1 mBq being the average minimum detectable activity by the complete technique. Special efforts were made to ensure the removal of traces of different natural alpha-emitting radionuclides, which can interfere with the correct determination of 239+240Pu and 238Pu concentrations. The radiochemical procedure was validated by application to reference material and by participation in intercomparison exercises. This radiochemical procedure was applied to the different layers of a high-resolution sediment core taken from a lake in Sweden. The 239+240Pu and 238Pu/239+240Pu profiles obtained in the high-resolution sediment core correctly reproduced the expected evolution of these quantities as observed historically in the atmosphere, validating the procedure for this purpose and showing the power of these radionuclides for dating purposes.  相似文献

Taking into account the importance of distribution and transfer of radionuclides in the soil–plant system, especially in agricultural fields, the aim of this research was assessment of radioactivity contribution and transfer characteristics of natural radionuclides in agroecosystem. The measurement of the natural radioactivity distribution was conducted in organic and sustainable farming management systems. Statistical evaluation of the physical and chemical properties of soils subjected to different farming systems, revealed the existence of differences in some parameters. Balanced distribution of natural radionuclides in soil-crop system was observed. Radionuclide 40K was the most accessible to the investigated crops via uptake from the soil, then 232Th and 226Ra. The obtained results are useful for understanding the behavior of the radionuclides and provide an insight into the cumulative deposition of radioactivity in the agroecosystem.

The interactive processes operating on the continental shelf adjacent to the river mouth control the amount and the characteristics of the Amazon discharge reaching the Atlantic Ocean. In this study, the distribution of trace elemental concentrations, with emphasis to the rare-earth elements, in sediment cores collected at several stations from the Amazon continental shelf during the falling water period was investigated by instrumental neutron activation analysis. Cores from the terrigenous and blue water zones have relatively uniform REE concentrations throughout the profile. Cerium anomalies for samples of the upper section of the eight stations are consistently positive and of high values (normally >2). Similar variation in the elemental concentration ratios between the seabed sediments and Amazon River suspended sediments was seen for stations located in the biogenic and blue water zones, with an enrichment for Ce, Sm, Fe, Th, and Sc and a depletion for the La, Eu, Tb, Yb, Co, Cr, Cs, Hf, Ta, and Zn. The shale-normalized REE patterns from shelf sediments are enriched in LREE relative to HREE, with enrichment factors varying from 1.5 for stations near the river mouth (terrigenous zone) to 1.9 for stations located far in the blue water zone. Published data for the Amazon River suspended sediment agree remarkably well with this observation of LREE-enrichment.  相似文献

The radioactivity of the Opa river — irrigated farmlands in the south western Nigeria was determined using an HpGe based, low-level passive gamma-counting system. With the exception of two isotopes, the main radionuclides analysed in the sample were the progenies of238U and232Th. The other two isotopes were the naturally occurring40K and the anthropogenic137Cs. The result obtained showed elevated levels of radioactivity from all detected radionuclides compared to the published data for this area. Enhanced levels of naturally occurring radionuclides is attributed to the use of phosphatic fertilizers for dry season vegetable cultivation along this river banks. The presence of the fission product137Cs could be traced to the fallouts occasioned by the various French nuclear tests in the Sahara desert, and probably, some effect of the more recent nuclear reactor accident at Chernobyl in 1986.  相似文献

Partitioning of natural radionuclides in sediments from streams affected by the waste piles of the former uranium mine and mill located at ?irovski vrh, Slovenia, was performed by applying a sequential extraction procedure. The sediments were collected at three sites located upstream and three sites located downstream of the waste piles. Then the four-step Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction protocol was applied to the samples and the natural radionuclides 238U, 230Th, 226Ra, 210Pb and 210Po were analysed in each extraction fraction. It was expected that the fractionation of natural radionuclides originating from the waste piles would differ from that upstream of the influence of waste piles because their chemical environment had been altered during the processes of uranium extraction. This difference could allow tracing of the radionuclides coming from the waste piles downstream of the affected watercourses. The results definitely showed that the total activity concentrations at sites downstream of the influence of the waste piles were higher than at sites upstream of the piles. However, this difference was geographically very limited and could no longer be detected already at a distance of about 5 km downstream. Unexpectedly, the fractionation of radionuclides upstream and downstream of the area of influence of the waste piles did not appear to be significantly altered. The sole differences found were for 238U and 226Ra in the second fraction (the “Fe/Mn oxides” fraction) and for 210Po in the fourth fraction (the “residue” fraction) of the BCR sequential extraction protocol.  相似文献

Study of Asian major rivers discharge to the ocean reveals variations of their water discharges and sediment loads, and local characteristic of river sediment concentrations. On the basis of this, the Asian rivers can be divided into three regions: Eurasia Arctic, East Asia, Southeast and South Asia Region. The Eurasia Arctic Region is characteristic of the lowest sediment concentration and load, while the East Asia Region is of the highest sediment concentration and higher sediment load, and the Southeast and South Asia Region yields higher sediment concentration and highest sediment load.  相似文献

Organic sedimentary rock samples were collected from three Oil Wells in the North-Western Niger Delta, Nigeria in order to determine their natural radioactivity and elemental geochemistry, with the aim of determining the concentrations of major radionuclides and their radiological and environmental health implication. The PIXE method of IBA technique and an accurately calibrated Si(Li) detector system was used to measure the elemental concentration of the sediment samples. The radionuclides identified belong to the decay series of naturally occurring radionuclides headed by 238U and 232Th along with the non-decay series radionuclide, 40K. The activity concentrations of the radionuclides and their derived dose were then calculated. The average activity concentrations of 40K were 248 Bq/kg for Well A, 261 Bq/kg for Well B and 273 Bq/kg for Well C. For 232Th the activity concentrations were 1,043 Bq/kg for Well A, 1,400 Bq/kg for Well B, 1,434 Bq/kg for Well C. 238U activity concentrations were 2,210, 3,508 and 250 Bq/kg for the Oil Wells A, B, C, respectively. The equivalent dose ranges from 8.5 ± 1.1 to 24.3 ± 2.1 mSv/year with a mean of 14.5 ± 2.2 mSv/year for Oil Well A, 2.4 ± 0.1–75.0 ± 1.2 mSv/year with a mean of 21.5 ± 1.1 mSv/year for Oil Well B and 3.7 ± 0.2–10.7 ± 0.6 mSv/year with a mean of 9.4 ± 2.5 for Oil Well C. The detected trace metals were majorly V, Ni, Pb, Fe, Cr, Cu, Zn, Co and their concentrations together with those of the radionuclides are compared with the relevant world standard limits. The results obtained were high, and hence, the radioactivity level and trace element content of the sediment samples from the North-Western Niger Delta Oil province could constitute health hazard to occupationally exposed workers, and to the public if not properly disposed. However, despite the careful disposal practice claims by the Oil industries, and given the high concentrations, the sediments could still pose an intrinsic health hazard considering their cumulative effects in the environment.  相似文献
