We derive bounds on the expectation of a class of periodic functions using the total variations of higher-order derivatives of the underlying probability density function. These bounds are a strict improvement over those of Romeijnders et al. (Math Program 157:3–46, 2016b), and we use them to derive error bounds for convex approximations of simple integer recourse models. In fact, we obtain a hierarchy of error bounds that become tighter if the total variations of additional higher-order derivatives are taken into account. Moreover, each error bound decreases if these total variations become smaller. The improved bounds may be used to derive tighter error bounds for convex approximations of more general recourse models involving integer decision variables.  相似文献

We consider incremental problem arising in elasto-plastic models with isotropic hardening. Our goal is to derive computable and guaranteed bounds of the difference between the exact solution and any function in the admissible (energy) class of the problem considered. Such estimates are obtained by an advanced version of the variational approach earlier used for linear boundary-value problems and nonlinear variational problems with convex functionals [24, 30]. They do no contain mesh-dependent constants and are valid for any conforming approximations regardless of the method used for their derivation. It is shown that the structure of error majorant reflects properties of the exact solution so that the majorant vanishes only if an approximate solution coincides with the exact one. Moreover, it possesses necessary continuity properties, so that any sequence of approximations converging to the exact solution in the energy space generates a sequence of positive numbers (explicitly computable by the majorant functional) that tends to zero.   相似文献

This paper studies a statistical problem called instrumental variable quantile regression (IVQR). We model IVQR as a convex quadratic program with complementarity constraints and—although this type of program is generally NP-hard—we develop a branch-and-bound algorithm to solve it globally. We also derive bounds on key variables in the problem, which are valid asymptotically for increasing sample size. We compare our method with two well known global solvers, one of which requires the computed bounds. On random instances, our algorithm performs well in terms of both speed and robustness.  相似文献

Abstract

In this article, our main aim is to develop gap functions and error bounds for a (non-smooth) convex vector optimization problem. We show that by focusing on convexity we are able to quite efficiently compute the gap functions and try to gain insight about the structure of set of weak Pareto minimizers by viewing its graph. We will discuss several properties of gap functions and develop error bounds when the data are strongly convex. We also compare our results with some recent results on weak vector variational inequalities with set-valued maps, and also argue as to why we focus on the convex case.  相似文献

Generalizing both mixed-integer linear optimization and convex optimization, mixed-integer convex optimization possesses broad modeling power but has seen relatively few advances in general-purpose solvers in recent years. In this paper, we intend to provide a broadly accessible introduction to our recent work in developing algorithms and software for this problem class. Our approach is based on constructing polyhedral outer approximations of the convex constraints, resulting in a global solution by solving a finite number of mixed-integer linear and continuous convex subproblems. The key advance we present is to strengthen the polyhedral approximations by constructing them in a higher-dimensional space. In order to automate this extended formulation we rely on the algebraic modeling technique of disciplined convex programming (DCP), and for generality and ease of implementation we use conic representations of the convex constraints. Although our framework requires a manual translation of existing models into DCP form, after performing this transformation on the MINLPLIB2 benchmark library we were able to solve a number of unsolved instances and on many other instances achieve superior performance compared with state-of-the-art solvers like Bonmin, SCIP, and Artelys Knitro.  相似文献

The paper is devoted to a posteriori quantitative analysis for errors caused by linearization of non-linear elliptic boundary value problems and their finite element realizations. We employ duality theory in convex analysis to derive computable bounds on the difference between the solution of a non-linear problem and the solution of the linearized problem, by using the solution of the linearized problem only. We also derive computable bounds on differences between finite element solutions of the nonlinear problem and finite element solutions of the linearized problem, by using finite element solutions of the linearized problem only. Numerical experiments show that our a posteriori error bounds are efficient.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper we consider the minimization problem with constraints. We will show that if the set of constraints is a Riemannian manifold of nonpositive sectional curvature, and the objective function is convex in this manifold, then the proximal point method in Euclidean space is naturally extended to solve that class of problems. We will prove that the sequence generated by our method is well defined and converge to a minimizer point. In particular we show how tools of Riemannian geometry, more specifically the convex analysis in Riemannian manifolds, can be used to solve nonconvex constrained problem in Euclidean, space.  相似文献

In this paper we develop random block coordinate descent methods for minimizing large-scale linearly constrained convex problems over networks. Since coupled constraints appear in the problem, we devise an algorithm that updates in parallel at each iteration at least two random components of the solution, chosen according to a given probability distribution. Those computations can be performed in a distributed fashion according to the structure of the network. Complexity per iteration of the proposed methods is usually cheaper than that of the full gradient method when the number of nodes in the network is much larger than the number of updated components. On smooth convex problems, we prove that these methods exhibit a sublinear worst-case convergence rate in the expected value of the objective function. Moreover, this convergence rate depends linearly on the number of components to be updated. On smooth strongly convex problems we prove that our methods converge linearly. We also focus on how to choose the probabilities to make our randomized algorithms converge as fast as possible, which leads us to solving a sparse semidefinite program. We then describe several applications that fit in our framework, in particular the convex feasibility problem. Finally, numerical experiments illustrate the behaviour of our methods, showing in particular that updating more than two components in parallel accelerates the method.  相似文献

We formulate the resource-constrained project scheduling problem as a satisfiability problem and adapt a satisfiability solver for the specific domain of the problem. Our solver is lightweight and shows good performance both in finding feasible solutions and in proving lower bounds. Our numerical tests allowed us to close several benchmark instances of the RCPSP that have never been closed before by proving tighter lower bounds and by finding better feasible solutions. Using our method we solve optimally more instances of medium and large size from the benchmark library PSPLIB and do it faster compared to any other existing solver.  相似文献

In this study we investigate the single source location problem with the presence of several possible capacities and the opening (fixed) cost of a facility that is depended on the capacity used and the area where the facility is located. Mathematical models of the problem for both the discrete and the continuous cases using the Rectilinear and Euclidean distances are produced. Our aim is to find the optimal number of open facilities, their corresponding locations, and their respective capacities alongside the assignment of the customers to the open facilities in order to minimise the total fixed and transportation costs. For relatively large problems, two solution methods are proposed namely an iterative matheuristic approach and VNS-based matheuristic technique. Dataset from the literature is adapted to assess our proposed methods. To assess the performance of the proposed solution methods, the exact method is first applied to small size instances where optimal solutions can be identified or lower and upper bounds can be recorded. Results obtained by the proposed solution methods are also reported for the larger instances.

We present semidefinite relaxations for unconstrained non-convex quadratic mixed-integer optimization problems. These relaxations yield tight bounds and are computationally easy to solve for medium-sized instances, even if some of the variables are integer and unbounded. In this case, the problem contains an infinite number of linear constraints; these constraints are separated dynamically. We use this approach as a bounding routine in an SDP-based branch-and-bound framework. In case of a convex objective function, the new SDP bound improves the bound given by the continuous relaxation of the problem. Numerical experiments show that our algorithm performs well on various types of non-convex instances.  相似文献

The paper treats the problem of obtaining numerical solutions to the Fokker-Plank equation for the density of a diffusion, and for the conditional density, given certain “white noise” corrupted observations. These equations generally have a meaning only in the weak sense; the basic assumptions on the diffusion are that the coefficients are bounded, and uniformly continuous, and that the diffusion has a unique solution in the sense of multivariate distributions. It is shown that, if the finite difference approximations are carefully (but naturally) chosen, then the finite difference solutions to the formal adjoints yield immediately a sequence of approximations that converge weakly to the weak sense solution to the Fokker-Plank equation (conditional or not), as the difference intervals go to zero. The approximations seem very natural for this type of problem. They are related to the transition functions of a sequence of Markov chains, the measures of whose continuous time interpolations converge weakly to the (measure of) diffusion, as the difference intervals go to zero, and, hence, seem to have more physical significance than the usual (formal or not) approximations. The method is purely probabilistic and relies heavily on results of the weak convergence of measures on abstract spaces.  相似文献

We consider an n-player bargaining problem where the utility possibility set is compact, convex, and stricly comprehensive. We show that a stationary subgame perfect Nash equilibrium exists, and that, if the Pareto surface is differentiable, all such equilibria converge to the Nash bargaining solution as the length of a time period between offers goes to zero. Without the differentiability assumption, convergence need not hold.  相似文献

The concepts of convex order and comonotonicity have become quite popular in risk theory, essentially since Kaas et al. [Kaas, R., Dhaene, J., Goovaerts, M.J., 2000. Upper and lower bounds for sums of random variables. Insurance: Math. Econ. 27, 151-168] constructed bounds in the convex order sense for a sum S of random variables without imposing any dependence structure upon it. Those bounds are especially helpful, if the distribution of S cannot be calculated explicitly or is too cumbersome to work with. This will be the case for sums of lognormally distributed random variables, which frequently appear in the context of insurance and finance. In this article we quantify the maximal error in terms of truncated first moments, when S is approximated by a lower or an upper convex order bound to it. We make use of geometrical arguments; from the unknown distribution of S only its variance is involved in the computation of the error bounds. The results are illustrated by pricing an Asian option. It is shown that under certain circumstances our error bounds outperform other known error bounds, e.g. the bound proposed by Nielsen and Sandmann [Nielsen, J.A., Sandmann, K., 2003. Pricing bounds on Asian options. J. Financ. Quant. Anal. 38, 449-473].  相似文献

A central problem of branch-and-bound methods for global optimization is that often a lower bound do not match with the optimal value of the corresponding subproblem even if the diameter of the partition set shrinks to zero. This can lead to a large number of subdivisions preventing the method from terminating in reasonable time. For the all-quadratic optimization problem with convex constraints we present optimality cuts which cut off a given local minimizer from the feasible set. We propose a branch-and-bound algorithm using optimality cuts which is finite if all global minimizers fulfill a certain second order optimality condition. The optimality cuts are based on the formulation of a dual problem where additional redundant constraints are added. This technique is also used for constructing tight lower bounds. Moreover we present for the box-constrained and the standard quadratic programming problem dual bounds which have under certain conditions a zero duality gap.  相似文献

We present two new error bounds for optimization problems over a convex set whose objective function f is either semianalytic or γ-strictly convex, with γ≥1. We then apply these error bounds to analyze the rate of convergence of a wide class of iterative descent algorithms for the aforementioned optimization problem. Our analysis shows that the function sequence {f(x k )} converges at least at the sublinear rate of k for some positive constant ε, where k is the iteration index. Moreover, the distances from the iterate sequence {x k } to the set of stationary points of the optimization problem converge to zero at least sublinearly. In this paper, we study the crane scheduling problem for a vessel after the vessel is moored on a terminal and develop both exact and heuristic solution approaches for the problem. For small-sized instances, we develop a time-space network flow formulation with non-crossing constraints for the problem and apply an exact solution approach to obtain an optimal solution. For medium-sized instances, we develop a Lagrangian relaxation approach that allows us to obtain tight lower bounds and near-optimal solutions. For large-sized instances, we develop two heuristics and show that the error bounds of our heuristics are no more than 100%. Finally, we perform computational studies to show the effectiveness of our proposed solution approaches.  相似文献

We study two-stage adjustable robust linear programming in which the right-hand sides are uncertain and belong to a convex, compact uncertainty set. This problem is NP-hard, and the affine policy is a popular, tractable approximation. We prove that under standard and simple conditions, the two-stage problem can be reformulated as a copositive optimization problem, which in turn leads to a class of tractable, semidefinite-based approximations that are at least as strong as the affine policy. We investigate several examples from the literature demonstrating that our tractable approximations significantly improve the affine policy. In particular, our approach solves exactly in polynomial time a class of instances of increasing size for which the affine policy admits an arbitrarily large gap.  相似文献

We analyze nonlinear stochastic optimization problems with probabilistic constraints on nonlinear inequalities with random right hand sides. We develop two numerical methods with regularization for their numerical solution. The methods are based on first order optimality conditions and successive inner approximations of the feasible set by progressive generation of p-efficient points. The algorithms yield an optimal solution for problems involving α-concave probability distributions. For arbitrary distributions, the algorithms solve the convex hull problem and provide upper and lower bounds for the optimal value and nearly optimal solutions. The methods are compared numerically to two cutting plane methods.  相似文献

A new approach is proposed for finding all real solutions of systems of nonlinear equations with bound constraints. The zero finding problem is converted to a global optimization problem whose global minima with zero objective value, if any, correspond to all solutions of the original problem. A branch-and-bound algorithm is used with McCormick’s nonsmooth convex relaxations to generate lower bounds. An inclusion relation between the solution set of the relaxed problem and that of the original nonconvex problem is established which motivates a method to generate automatically, starting points for a local Newton-type method. A damped-Newton method with natural level functions employing the restrictive monotonicity test is employed to find solutions robustly and rapidly. Due to the special structure of the objective function, the solution of the convex lower bounding problem yields a nonsmooth root exclusion test which is found to perform better than earlier interval-analysis based exclusion tests. Both the componentwise Krawczyk operator and interval-Newton operator with Gauss-Seidel based root inclusion and exclusion tests are also embedded in the proposed algorithm to refine the variable bounds for efficient fathoming of the search space. The performance of the algorithm on a variety of test problems from the literature is presented, and for most of them, the first solution is found at the first iteration of the algorithm due to the good starting point generation.  相似文献
