In this contribution, the rheological models based on the decomposition of the deformation rate tensor, as proposed by Palmow (1984), is combined with the numerical solution of objective tensorial ODEs as published by Rashid (1993). The resulting framework is suitable to model the complex inelastic properties of many materials at large strains. As an example, the Schwedoff model, which is appropriate for the simulation of metal forming processes, is analyzed within a cyclic simple shear test. (© 2016 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. On a microscopic length scale dual-phase steels exhibit a polycrystalline microstructure consisting of ferrite and martensite. In this work it is assumed that the martensitic phase behaves purely thermoelastic while for the ferritic phase a thermoplastic material model was developed based on the assumption that the driving mechanism for persistent deformation is the movement of dislocations on preferred planes in preferred directions. The necessary shear stress to move dislocations at a certain temperature and deformation rate is assumed to possess contributions from the atomic lattice, alloying atoms and the dislocation structure. To consider the influence of the dislocation structure, dislocation densities are introduced as state variables for which temperature and deformation rate dependent evolution equations are formulated. Since for general loading histories the model equations cannot be integrated analytically, a time discretized form of the model equations with an appropriate solution algorithm is presented. An analytical approach to investigating the stability of simply supported rectangular functionally graded plates under in-plane compressive, thermal, and combined loads is presented. The material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent and graded in the thickness direction according to a simple power-law distribution in terms of volume fractions of constituents. The equilibrium and compatibility equations for the plates are derived by using the first-order shear deformation theory of plates, taking into account both the geometrical nonlinearity in the von Karman sense and initial geometrical imperfections. The resulting equations are solved by employing the Galerkin procedure to obtain expressions from which the postbuckling load–deflection curves can be traced by an iterative procedure. A stability analysis performed for geometrically midplane-symmetric FGM plates shows the effects of material and geometric parameters, in-plane boundary conditions, temperature-dependent material properties, and imperfections on the postbuckling behavior of the plates.

An adiabatic shear band (ASB) is a narrow region of intense plastic deformation that forms when some metallic alloys and some polymers are deformed at high strain rates and there is not enough time for the heat generated by plastic deformations to diffuse away. The study of ASBs is important because an ASB is a precursor to shear/ductile fractures. Initial-boundary-value problems simulating the initiation and propagation of an ASB have been analyzed usually using the finite element method (FEM). Because of the large plastic strains involved, the FE mesh needs to be refined several times to delineate the ASB width. Each refinement requires, in turn, interpolation of data from the previous mesh to the new one which causes a smoothening of the sharp gradients of the deformation fields, and affects characteristics of the ASB. In this paper, we propose the application of the finite element method with piecewise discontinuous basis functions for studying the occurrence of ASBs in simple shearing deformations of a body composed of an isotropic and homogeneous thermo-elastoviscoplastic material. The mathematical model of the problem is defined by a system of coupled nonlinear partial differential equations and an inequality constraint associated with the plastic strain rates admissibility.

A two-dimensional continuum theory is presented for cohesionless granular media consisting of identical rigid disks. While the normal deformation of contacting particles is constrained, the tangential frictional contact is modelled by a line spring with a constant stiffness. To describe the static frictional system transmitting couples at contacts, a Cosserat-type continuum including rotational degrees of freedom is appropriate. Contrary to the classical elastic medium, movement of particles within a granular system in response to applied loads can give rise to localisations of force chains and large voids. In addition to relative displacement and rotation, a director governing the direction of interparticle forces and a phase field delineating density variation, are therefore introduced. Total work done involving these two order parameters for a particle is attained on an orientation average. Based on the formulation of free energy, a concentration- and anisotropy-dependent formulation for static quantities (stress and couple stress) in the rate form is derived in light of the principles of thermodynamics. It is consistent with the requirement of observer independence and material symmetry. The governing equations for two order parameters are derived, in which void concentration and stress anisotropy are related to relative displacement and rotation. As an example, the proposed model is applied to the hardening regime of deformation of a dense particle assembly with initial perfect lattice under simple shear. It is demonstrated that in the presence of dilatancy and director variation, there exists a linear relation between the shear stress and strain, in coincidence with experimental observations.

We present an efficient model for the simulation of phase-transformations in polycrystalline materials. As a basis, we use a thermodynamically consistent, one-dimensional phase-transformation model, which is embedded into a micro-sphere formulation in order to be able to simulate three-dimensional boundary value problems. The underlying evolution equations are solved efficiently using a newly developed explicit integration scheme that has been proved to be unconditionally A-stable. A numerical example by means of a deformation in simple shear is additionally provided in this contribution. (© 2010 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

A geometrically nonlinear (3,2) unified zigzag beam element is developed with a reduced number of degree-of-freedom for the large deformation analysis. The main merit of the beam element model is the Kirchhoff and Cauchy shear stress solution for large deformation and large strain analysis is more accurate. The geometrically nonlinearity is considered in the calculation of the zigzag coefficients. Thus, the results of shear Cauchy stress are matching well with solid element analysis in case of the beam with aspect ratio greater than 20 under large deformation. The zigzag coefficients are derived explicitly. The Green strain and the second Piola Kirchhoff stress are used. The second Piola Kirchhoff shear stress is continuous at the interface between adjacent layers priori. The bottom surface second Piola Kirchhoff shear stress condition is used to determine the zigzag coefficient and the top surface second Piola Kirchhoff shear stress condition is used to reduce one degree-of-freedom. The nonlinear finite element equations are derived. In the numerical tests, several benchmark problems with large deformation are solved to verify the accuracy. It is observed that the proposed beam has accurate solution for beam with aspect ratio greater than 20. The second Piola Kirchhoff and Cauchy shear stress accuracy is also good. A convergence study is also presented.

Engineering systems, such as rolled steel beams, chain and belt drives and high-speed paper, can be modeled as axially translating beams. This article scrutinizes vibration and stability of an axially translating viscoelastic Timoshenko beam constrained by simple supports and subjected to axial pretension. The viscoelastic form of general rheological model is adopted to constitute the material of the beam. The partial differential equations governing transverse motion of the beam are derived from the extended form of Hamilton's principle. The non-transforming spectral element method (NTSEM) is applied to transform the governing equations into a set of ordinary differential equations. The formulation is similar to conventional FFT-based spectral element model except that Daubechies wavelet basis functions are used for temporal discretization. Influences of translating velocities, axial tensile force, viscoelastic parameter, shear deformation, beam model and boundary condition types are investigated on the underlying dynamic response and stability via the NTSEM and demonstrated via numerical simulations.

The equations of the plane theory of for the elasticity bending of a long strip are reduced by the method of simple iterations to the solution of a system of two equations for the displacement of the axis of the strip and the shear stress. If the transverse load varies slowly along the strip, the resolvent equations reduce to a single equation that is identical to the classical equation for the bend of a beam. When a local load is applied, the resolvent equation acquires an additional singular term that is the solution of the equation for the shear stresses under the assumption that the displacement (deflection) is a function of small variability. The convergence of the solution in an asymptotic sense is demonstrated. The application of the method of simple iterations to the dynamic equations for the bending of a strip also leads to a system of two resolvent equations in the displacement of the axis of the strip and the shear stress. These equations reduce to a single equation that is identical with the well-known Timoshenko equation. Hence, the procedure for using the method of simple iterations that has been developed can be classified as a general method for obtaining Timoshenko-type theories. An equation is derived for the bending of a strip on an elastic base with an isolated functional singular part with two bed coefficients, corresponding to the transverse and longitudinal springiness of the base.

A finite element model is developed to study the large-amplitude free vibrations of generally-layered laminated composite beams. The Poisson effect, which is often neglected, is included in the laminated beam constitutive equation. The large deformation is accounted for by using von Karman strains and the transverse shear deformation is incorporated using a higher order theory. The beam element has eight degrees of freedom with the inplane displacement, transverse displacement, bending slope and bending rotation as the variables at each node. The direct iteration method is used to solve the nonlinear equations which are evaluated at the point of reversal of motion. The influence of boundary conditions, beam geometries, Poisson effect, and ply orientations on the nonlinear frequencies and mode shapes are demonstrated.

In this paper we examine the influence of magnetic fields on the static response of magnetoelastic materials, such as magneto-sensitive elastomers, that are capable of large deformations. The analysis is based on a simple formulation of the mechanical equilibrium equations and constitutive law for such materials developed recently by the authors, coupled with the governing magnetic field equations. The equations are applied in the solution of some simple representative and illustrative problems, with the focus on incompressible materials. First, we consider the pure homogeneous deformation of a slab of material in the presence of a magnetic field normal to its faces. This is followed by a review of the problem of simple shear of the slab in the presence of the same magnetic field. Next we examine a problem involving non-homogeneous deformations, namely the extension and inflation of a circular cylindrical tube. In this problem the magnetic field is taken to be either axial (a uniform field) or circumferential. For each problem we give a general formulation for the case of an isotropic magnetoelastic constitutive law, and then, for illustration, specific results are derived for a prototype constitutive law. We emphasize that in general there are significant differences in the results for formulations in which the magnetic field or the magnetic induction is taken as the independent magnetic variable. This is demonstrated for one particular problem, in which restrictions are placed on the admissible class of constitutive laws if the magnetic induction is the independent variable but no restrictions if the magnetic field is the independent variable.

Many slender rods in engineering can be modeled as Euler-Bernoulli beams. For the analysis of their dynamic behaviors, it is necessary to establish the dynamic models for the flexible multi-body systems. Geometric nonlinear elements with absolute nodal coordinates help solve a large number of dynamic problems of flexible beams, but they still face such problems as shear locking, nodal stress discontinuity and low computation efficiency. Based on the theory of large deformation beams’ virtual power equations, the functional formulas between displacements and rotation angles at the nodes were established, which can satisfy the deformation coupling relationships. The generalized strains to describe geometric nonlinear effects in this case were derived. Some parameters of boundary nodes were replaced by axial strains and sectional curvatures to obtain a more accurate and concise constraint method for applying external forces. To improve the numerical efficiency and stability of the system’s motion equations, a model-smoothing method was used to filter high frequencies out of the model. The numerical examples verify the rationality and effectiveness of the proposed element. © 2022 Editorial Office of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the finite element modelling of metal powder compaction process at elevated temperature. In the modelling, the behaviour of powder is assumed to be rate independent thermo-elastoplastic material where the material constitutive laws are derived based on a continuum mechanics approach. The deformation process of metal powder has been described by a large displacement based finite element formulation. The Elliptical Cap yield model has been used to represent the deformation behaviour of the powder mass during the compaction process. This yield model was tested and found to be appropriate to represent the compaction process. The staggered-incremental-iterative solution strategy has been established to solve the non-linearity in the systems of equations. Some numerical simulation results were validated through experimentation, where a good agreement was found between the numerical simulation results and the experimental data.
