We have studied the room-temperature growth of Cr on Ir(1 1 1) by scanning tunneling microscopy. Even in the low-coverage regime, up to a total coverage of 2 monolayers (ML), Cr does not grow in the layer-by-layer mode. Instead, we observe islands with local coverages Θ between 1 ML and 5 ML. While the 1st layer growth is pseudomorphic, sporadic defect lines are observed in the 2nd layer. For Θ ? 3 ML periodic one-dimensional dislocation lines appear indicating the onset of strain relief. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals that islands with Θ = 1 ML exist in two modifications. Though their tunneling spectra are qualitatively rather similar, direct comparison shows that the main peak is shifted by about 15 mV, resulting in peak positions of −0.255 V and −0.270 V. We interpret these two modifications as regular fcc Cr and Cr which exhibits a faulted hcp stacking on Ir(1 1 1), respectively. The assignment of fcc to areas directly attached to substrate steps together with the evolution of the ratio of the different ML-areas with coverage leads to the conclusion that hcp is the more favorable stacking.  相似文献

We studied the low temperature (T ? 130 K) growth of Ag on Si(0 0 1) and Si(1 1 1) flat surfaces prepared by Si homo epitaxy with the aim to achieve thin metallic films. The band structure and morphology of the Ag overlayers have been investigated by means of XPS, UPS, LEED, STM and STS. Surprisingly a (√3 × √3)R30° LEED structure for Ag films has been observed after deposition of 2-6 ML Ag onto a Si(1 1 1)(√3 × √3)R30°Ag surface at low temperatures. XPS investigations showed that these films are solid, and UPS measurements indicate that they are metallic. However, after closer STM studies we found that these films consists of sharp Ag islands and (√3 × √3)R30°Ag flat terraces in between. On Si(0 0 1) the low-temperature deposition yields an epitaxial growth of Ag on clean Si(0 0 1)-2 × 1 with a twinned Ag(1 1 1) structure at coverage’s as low as 10 ML. Furthermore the conductivity of few monolayer Ag films on Si(1 0 0) surfaces has been studied as a function of temperature (40-300 K).  相似文献

The surface structure and properties of the HfB2(0 0 0 1) (Hafnium diboride, HfB2) surface have been investigated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction (LEED), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Annealing temperatures above 1900°C produce a sharp (1×1) LEED pattern, which corresponds to STM images showing flat (0 0 0 1) terraces with a very low contamination level separated by steps 3.4 Å in height, corresponding to the separation of adjacent Hf planes in the HfB2 bulk structure. For lower annealing temperatures, extra p(2×2) spots were observed with LEED, which correspond to intermediate terraces of a p(2×1) missing row structure as observed with STM.  相似文献

Ultrathin layers of cerium oxide have been deposited on a Rh(1 1 1) surface and their growth morphology, structure, and thermal stability have been investigated by LEED, STM, XPS, and valence band resonant photoemission. STM and LEED indicate that the ceria grows epitaxially in form of ordered CeO2 islands at elevated substrate temperature (250–300 °C), with (1 1 1) faces parallel and orientationally aligned to the main azimuthal directions of the substrate. The ultrathin ceria films contain significant amounts of reduced Ce3+ species, which appear to be located predominantly at the ceria–Rh interface. For thicker films (>6 equivalent monolayers) stoichiometric CeO2 is detected in XPS. Vacuum annealing produces morphologically well-defined hexagonal islands, accompanied by partial reduction and the formation of oxygen vacancies at the ceria surface. The thermal stability and the degree of reduction is a function of the oxide layer thickness, with thinner layers being thermally less stable. At temperatures >800 °C, the ceria decomposes and Ce–Rh alloy phases are identified.  相似文献

We report on the growth of ultrathin epitaxial Co films on Fe(1 1 0) examined by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS). At room temperature Co forms pseudomorphic, ideally ordered body-centered cubic (bcc) layers for the first two monolayers as confirmed by atomically resolved STM images. This is in contrast to the related case of Co/Cr(1 1 0) where a superstructure occurs in the second layer. The third monolayer forms a close-packed structure and causes a transformation of the buried second monolayer into a close-packed structure. The Fe(1 1 0) substrate strongly influences the electronic structure of the first Co monolayer as concluded from the dI/dU spectra. This influence is less important for the second monolayer. The measured local density-of-states function for the bcc Co double layer is in agreement with theoretical predictions for bcc Co.  相似文献

We have investigated a BC3 covered NbB2(0 0 0 1) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). The STM images reveal characteristic features of a Moiré pattern reflecting an incommensurate relation of the BC3 sheet with the substrate: bright protrusions with the periodicity of the substrate lattice are modulated in intensity with the periodicity of the BC3 lattice. As a result, the surface exhibits nm-scale patchy regions with either the √3 × √3 or the 1 × 1 structure of the substrate. The two-dimensional Fourier transformation pattern of the STM image is consistent with the LEED pattern proving the epitaxial and incommensurate relationship between BC3 surface sheet and substrate. No feature of a predicted superconducting gap was found in STS spectra measured at 5 K.  相似文献

Atomic oxygen resulting from the dissociation of O2 on Pd(1 1 1) at low coverage was studied in a variable temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) in the range from 30 to 210 K. Oxygen atoms, which typically appear as 30-40 pm deep depressions on Pd(1 1 1), occupy fcc hollow sites and form ordered p(2 × 2) islands upon annealing above 180 K. The mobility of the atoms diminishes rapidly below 180 K, with an approximate diffusion barrier of 0.4-0.5 eV. Oxygen atom pairs produced by thermal dissociation of O2 at 160 K occupy both fcc and hcp hollow sites. The atoms travel approximately 0.25 nm after dissociation, and the distribution of pairs is strongly influenced by the presence of subsurface impurities within the Pd sample. At much lower temperatures, the STM tip can dissociate oxygen molecules. Dissociation occurs at sample bias voltages exceeding approximately 0.1 V. Following tip-induced dissociation, the product atoms occupy only fcc hollow sites. Oxygen atoms can be manipulated via short range repulsive interactions with the STM tip.  相似文献

In situ high-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was employed to follow the coalescence kinetics of two-dimensional TiN islands on atomically smooth TiN(0 0 1) and TiN(1 1 1) terraces. The results are analyzed using a numerical approach based upon Mullin’s theory for surface relaxation and experimentally determined absolute orientation-dependent step stiffnesses. From the calculated time-dependent island shapes during coalescence, in combination with the STM data, we obtain quantitative values for edge mobilities.  相似文献

The temperature dependent adsorption of sulfur on TiO2(1 1 0) has been studied with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Sulfur adsorbs dissociatively at room temperature and binds to fivefold coordinated Ti atoms. Upon heating to 120°C, 80% of the sulfur desorbs and the S 2p peak position changes from 164.3±0.1 to 162.5±0.1 eV. This peak shift corresponds to a change of the adsorption site to the position of the bridging oxygen atoms of TiO2(1 1 0). Further heating causes little change in S coverage and XPS binding energies, up to a temperature of 430°C where most of the S desorbs and the S 2p peak shifts back to higher binding energy. Sulfur adsorption at 150°C, 200°C, and 300°C leads to a rich variety of structures and adsorption sites as observed with LEED and STM. At low coverages, sulfur occupies the position of the bridging oxygen atoms. At 200°C these S atoms arrange in a (3×1) superstructure. For adsorption between 300°C and 400°C a (3×3) and (4×1) LEED pattern is observed for intermediate and saturation coverage, respectively. Adsorption at elevated temperature reduces the substrate as indicated by a strong Ti3+ shoulder in the XPS Ti 2p3/2 peak, with up to 15.6% of the total peak area for the (4×1) structure. STM of different coverages adsorbed at 400°C indicates structural features consisting of two single S atoms placed next to each other along the [0 0 1] direction at the position of the in-plane oxygen atoms. The (3×3) and the (4×1) structure are formed by different arrangements of these S pairs.  相似文献

We report on the growth of thin Co films on Pd(1 1 1) at three different temperatures 180 K, 300 K, and 550 K. The structure and morphology was determined by scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction. The growth mode was found to vary with temperature. For 180 K and 300 K, we observed a tendency to double layer growth for the initial layers while at elevated temperatures, the initial film grows in single layer. For most conditions, non-ideal three-dimensional growth was observed. Two-dimensional growth was only found for growth temperature of 550 K and coverages above 5 ML. Depending on temperature, the Co islands at low coverages exhibit three principally different shapes: dendritic at 180 K, hexagonal at 300 K and triangular at 550 K. For growth at 550 K and coverages above 5 ML, the islands changed to an irregular shape. This transition is most likely responsible for the transition to 2D growth. Further, the large strain is relaxed by the creation of a dislocation network with mixed fcc and hcp stacking. Depending on the temperature and coverage, a hexagonal or a triangular network was observed. Finally, we have investigated the effect of annealing Co films prepared at 180 K and 300 K. Heating to 490 K leads to coarsening and intermixing.  相似文献

The nanoscale hexagonal pattern observed in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) for 3-layer and 4-layer Pb islands on Si(1 1 1) is studied theoretically. We found that besides thickness the atomic rearrangement at the Pb/Si interface plays an important role in determining the STM patterns. Electronic structures of the Pb film on Si(1 1 1) obtained from fully relaxed and unrelaxed Pb films are qualitatively different. Simulated STM images for Pb films with different stacking also show that the corrugation patterns are sensitive to the buried Pb-Si interfacial structure.  相似文献

The adsorption of the helically shaped polyaromatic hydrocarbon heptahelicene (C30H18) on Ni(1 1 1) was studied by means of STM, TPD, LEED, ToF–SIMS, XPS, and AES at temperatures between 130 and 1000 K. The molecule in the monolayer remains intact up to 500 K. Above that temperature a stepwise decomposition into carbon and hydrogen occurs; the latter desorbing subsequently as H2. At submonolayer coverages the molecules are adsorbed randomly. The saturated monolayer shows long-range order, but no differences between the structures generated by a pure enantiomer or the racemic mixture have been observed.  相似文献

The adsorption, diffusion and ordering of hydrogen on Pd(1 1 1) was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy in the temperature range of 37-90 K. At low coverage isolated hydrogen atoms were observed. They formed √3×√3-1H islands as the coverage increased. Above 1/3 monolayer (ML) coverage areas of a new phase with √3×√3-2H structure were formed, with both structures coexisting between 1/3 and 2/3 ML. Finally a 1 × 1 structure was formed after high exposures of hydrogen above 50 K, with a coverage close to 1 ML. Atomically resolved images reveal that H binds to fcc hollow sites.  相似文献

Several surface analysis techniques were combined to study the initial stages of oxidation of Cu(1 1 1) surfaces exposed to O2 at low pressure (<5 × 10−6 mbar) and room temperature. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) results show that the reactivity is governed by the restructuring of the Cu(1 1 1) surface. On the terraces, oxygen dissociative adsorption leads to the formation of isolated O adatoms and clusters weakly bound to the surface. The O adatoms are located in the fcc threefold hollow sites of the unrestructured terraces. Friedel oscillations with an amplitude lower than 5 pm have been measured around the adatoms. At step edges, surface restructuring is initiated and leads to the nucleation and growth of a two-dimensional disordered layer of oxide precursor. The electronic structure of this oxide layer is characterised by a band gap measured by scanning tunneling spectroscopy to be ∼1.5 eV wide. The growth of the oxide islands progresses by consumption of the upper metal terraces to form triangular indents. The extraction of the Cu atoms at this interface generates a preferential orientation of the interface along the close-packed directions of the metal. A second growth front corresponds to the step edges of the oxide islands and progresses above the lower metal terraces. This is where the excess Cu atoms extracted at the first growth front are incorporated. STM shows that the growing disordered oxide layer consists of units of hexagonal structure with a first nearest neighbour distance characteristic of a relaxed Cu-Cu distance (∼0.3 nm), consistent with local Cu2O(1 1 1)-like elements. Exposure at 300 °C is necessary to form an ordered two-dimensional layer of oxide precursor. It forms the so-called “29” superstructure assigned to a periodic distorted Cu2O(1 1 1)-like structure.  相似文献

We present the first direct observation of an occupied noble metal surface state at the metal/liquid interface. The Au(1 1 1) Shockley-like surface state was measured by scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) at the Au(1 1 1)/n-tetradecane interface. These results show that the surface state of gold survives in a liquid environment, and can be probed by STS. More generally it indicates that STS can be used to study electronic properties of surfaces at the solid/liquid interface, and that spectra can be directly compared to measurements and calculations of a surface’s electronic structure in ultra-high vacuum.  相似文献

The growth of submonolayer Pt on Ru(0 0 0 1) has been studied with scanning tunneling microscopy. We focus on the island evolution depending on Pt coverage θPt, growth temperature TG and post-growth annealing temperature TA. Dendritic trigonal Pt islands with atomically rough borders are observed at room temperature and moderate deposition rates of about 5 × 10−4 ML/s. Two types of orientation, rotated by 180° and strongly influenced by minute amounts of oxygen are observed which is ascribed to nucleation starting at either hcp or fcc hollow sites. The preference for fcc sites changes to hcp in the presence of about one percent of oxygen. At lower growth temperatures Pt islands show a more fractal shape. Generally, atomically rough island borders smooth down at elevated growth temperatures higher than 300 K, or equivalent annealing temperatures. Dendritic Pt islands, for example, transform into compact, almost hexagonal islands, indicating similar step energies of A- and B-type of steps. Depending on the Pt coverage the thermal evolution differs somewhat: While regular islands on Ru(0 0 0 1) are formed at low coverages, vacancy islands are observed close to completion of the Pt layer.  相似文献

The morphology of ultrathin Ni films on Mo(1 1 0) and W(1 0 0) has been studied by low-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy. Ni films grow pseudomorphically on Mo(1 1 0) at 300 K for a coverage of 0.15 ML. A (8 × 1) structure is found at 0.4 ML, which develops into a (7 × 1) structure by 0.8 ML. The film undergoes a structural change to fcc Ni(1 1 1) at 6 ML. The growth mode switches from layer-by-layer to Stranski-Krastanov between 4 ML and 6 ML. Annealing at around 850 K results in alloying of submonolayer films with the substrate, while for higher coverages the Ni agglomerates into nanowedge islands. Ni films grow pseudomorphically on W(1 0 0) up to a coverage of around 2 ML at 300 K, above which there is a structural change from bcc to hcp Ni with the epitaxial relationship . This is accompanied by the formation of orthogonal domains of uniaxial strain-relieving dislocations from the third layer of the film. For coverages up to 1 ML the growth proceeds by formation of two-dimensional islands, but shifts to three-dimensional growth by 2 ML with rectangular islands aligned along the 〈0 1 1〉 substrate directions. Annealing at around 550 K results in agglomeration of Ni into larger islands and increasing film roughness.  相似文献

We have characterized the structural behaviour of ethanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(1 0 0) in 0.1 M H2SO4 as a function of electrode potential, using in-situ scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). After modification of the Au(1 0 0) electrode in an ethanolic solution of ethanethiol, STM images in air reveal a disordered thiol adlayer and a surface that is covered by 25% of monoatomic high gold islands, which originate from lifting of the (hex) reconstruction during thiol adsorption. In contrast to alkanethiol SAMs on Au(1 1 1), no vacancy islands are seen on the Au(1 0 0) surface. After contact of the SAM-covered Au(1 0 0) electrode with 0.1 M H2SO4 under potential control, two different structures are observed, depending on the potential range positive or negative of +0.3 V vs. SCE. In both cases the emerging ordered structures are quadratic, their unit cells being rotated by 45° with respect to the main crystallographic axes of the substrate. However, the ordered structure at negative potentials is more densely packed than the one at positive potentials, and in addition the surface reveals an almost 50% coverage of monoatomic high gold islands. The structure of the SAM changes reversibly with the electrode potential, the long range order gradually decreasing with each transition. Concomittant with this structure transition monoatomic deep holes are created when the potential is stepped from the cathodic to the anodic region. The experimental observations are rationalized by a high mobility of the gold thiolate moiety, causing the surface density of the SAM-covered gold to change drastically with potential.  相似文献

We have studied Si(0 0 1)-Ga surface structures formed at Ga coverages of slightly above 0.50 monolayer (ML) at 250 °C by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). 4 × 2-, 5 × 2-, and 6 × 2-Ga structures were observed in a local area on the surface. The 4 × 2-Ga structure consists of three protrusions, as observed in filled- and empty-state STM images. The characters of these structures are clearly different from those of other Si(0 0 1)-Ga structures. We also performed an ab initio calculation of the energetics for several possible models for the 4 × 2-Ga structure, and clarified that the three-orthogonal-Ga-dimer model is the most stable. Also, the results of comparing the simulated STM images and observation images at various bias voltages indicate that this structural model is the most favorable.  相似文献

We investigated Bi thin film growth on Ge(1 1 1) by using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). In the submonolayer regime, adsorbed Bi atoms form patches of the (2×1) structure. However, the structure does not grow to a long-range order. Following the formation of a (1×1) monolayer (ML) film, two-dimensional (1 1 0)-orientated Bi islands grow. The film orientation changes from (1 1 0) to (1 1 1) at 6-10 ML. The (1 1 0)-oriented Bi film shows a six-domain LEED pattern with missing spots, associated with a glide-line symmetry. The hexagonal (1 1 1) film at 14 ML has a lattice constant 2% smaller than bulk Bi(1 1 1).  相似文献
