This paper focuses on a two-machine re-entrant flowshop scheduling problem with the objective of minimizing makespan. In the re-entrant flowshop considered here, all jobs must be processed twice on each machine, that is, each job should be processed on machine 1, machine 2 and then machine 1 and machine 2. We develop dominance properties, lower bounds and heuristic algorithms for the problem, and use these to develop a branch and bound algorithm. For evaluation of the performance of the algorithms, computational experiments are performed on randomly generated test problems. Results of the experiments show that the suggested branch and bound algorithm can solve problems with up to 200 jobs in a reasonable amount of CPU time.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the problem of scheduling n independent jobs on m identical parallel machines for the objective of minimizing total tardiness of the jobs. We develop dominance properties and lower bounds, and develop a branch and bound algorithm using these properties and lower bounds as well as upper bounds obtained from a heuristic algorithm. Computational experiments are performed on randomly generated test problems and results show that the algorithm solves problems with moderate sizes in a reasonable amount of computation time.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a hybrid branch and bound algorithm for solving the problem of minimizing mean tardiness for a single machine problem subject to minimum number of tardy jobs. Although the minimum number of tardy jobs is known, the subset of tardy job is not known. The proposed algorithm uses traditional branch and bound scheme where lower bounds on mean tardiness are calculated coupled with using the information that the number of tardy jobs is known. It also uses an insertion algorithm which determines the optimal mean tardiness once the subset of tardy jobs is specified. An example is solved to illustrate the developed procedure.  相似文献

This paper addresses the parallel machine scheduling problem in which the jobs have distinct due dates with earliness and tardiness costs. New lower bounds are proposed for the problem, they can be classed into two families. First, two assignment-based lower bounds for the one-machine problem are generalized for the parallel machine case. Second, a time-indexed formulation of the problem is investigated in order to derive efficient lower bounds throught column generation or Lagrangean relaxation. A simple local search algorithm is also presented in order to derive an upper bound. Computational experiments compare these bounds for both the one machine and parallel machine problems and show that the gap between upper and lower bounds is about 1.5%.  相似文献

Each of n jobs is to be processed without interruption on a single machine. Each job becomes available for processing at time zero, has a deadline by which it must be completed and has a positive weight. The objective is to find a processing order of the jobs which minimizes the sum of weighted completion times. In this paper a branch and bound algorithm for the problem is presented which incorporates lower bounds that are obtained using a new technique called the multiplier adjustment method. Firstly several dominance conditions are derived. Then a heuristic is described and sufficient conditions for its optimality are given. The lower bound is obtained by performing a Lagrangean relaxation of the deadline constraints; the Lagrange multipliers are chosen so that the sequence generated by the heuristic is an optimal solution of the relaxed problem, thus yielding a lower bound. The algorithm is tested on problems with up to fifty jobs.  相似文献

We present a branch and bound algorithm for a two-machine re-entrant flowshop scheduling problem with the objective of minimizing total tardiness. In the re-entrant flowshop considered here, all jobs must be processed twice on each machine, that is, each job should be processed on machine 1, machine 2 and then machine 1 and machine 2. By regarding a job as a pair of sub-jobs, each of which represents a pass through the two machines, we develop dominance properties, a lower bound and heuristic algorithms for the problem, and use these to develop a branch and bound algorithm. For evaluation of the performance of the algorithms, computational experiments are performed on randomly generated test problems and results are reported. Results of the experiments show that the suggested branch and bound algorithm can solve problems with up to 20 sub-jobs in a reasonable amount of CPU time, and the average percentage gap of the heuristic solutions is about 13%.  相似文献

This paper focuses on a machine scheduling problem having applications in truck scheduling at transshipment terminals. Jobs increase and decrease, respectively, the level of a central inventory. Naturally, jobs decreasing the inventory level can be processed only if the level of the inventory is high enough not to drop below zero. We consider the problem to find a schedule for jobs such that the maximum lateness among all jobs is minimized. We develop properties of optimal solutions, lower bounds, and heuristic methods in order to find upper bounds. These are incorporated in four branch and bound algorithms that are based on fixing sequences of jobs in forward or backward direction in two different types of representations. By means of a computational study, we compare these approaches with each other in order to show their efficiency.  相似文献

We consider two problems of m-machine flow shop scheduling in this paper: one, with the objective of minimizing the variance of completion times of jobs, and the other with the objective of minimizing the sum of squares of deviations of job completion times from a common due date. Lower bounds on the sum of squares of deviations of job completion times from the mean completion time of jobs for a given partial sequence are first presented. Using these lower bounds, a branch and bound algorithm based on breadth-first search procedure for scheduling n jobs on m-machines with the objective of minimizing completion time variance (CTV) is developed to obtain the best permutation sequence. We also present two lower bounds and thereafter, a branch and bound algorithm with the objective of minimizing the sum of squares of deviations of job completion times from a given common due date (called the MSD problem). The computational experience with the working of the two proposed branch and bound algorithms is also reported. Two heuristics, one for each of the two problems, are developed. The computational experience on the evaluation of the heuristics is discussed.  相似文献

A branch and bound algorithm is presented for the problem of schedulingn jobs on a single machine to minimize tardiness. The algorithm uses a dual problem to obtain a good feasible solution and an extremely sharp lower bound on the optimal objective value. To derive the dual problem we regard the single machine as imposing a constraint for each time period. A dual variable is associated with each of these constraints and used to form a Lagrangian problem in which the dualized constraints appear in the objective function. A lower bound is obtained by solving the Lagrangian problem with fixed multiplier values. The major theoretical result of the paper is an algorithm which solves the Lagrangian problem in a number of steps proportional to the product ofn 2 and the average job processing time. The search for multiplier values which maximize the lower bound leads to the formulation and optimization of the dual problem. The bounds obtained are so sharp that very little enumeration or computer time is required to solve even large problems. Computational experience with 20-, 30-, and 50-job problems is presented.  相似文献

When the processing times of jobs are controllable, selected processing times affect both the manufacturing cost and the scheduling performance. A well known example for such a case that this paper specifically deals with is the turning operation on a CNC machine. Manufacturing cost of a turning operation is a nonlinear convex function of its processing time. In this paper, we deal with making optimal machine-job assignments and processing time decisions so as to minimize total manufacturing cost while the makespan being upper bounded by a known value, denoted as ?-constraint approach for a bicriteria problem. We then give optimality properties for the resulting single criterion problem. We provide alternative methods to compute cost lower bounds for partial schedules, which are used in developing an exact (branch and bound) algorithm. For the cases where the exact algorithm is not efficient in terms of computation time, we present a recovering beam search algorithm equipped with an improvement search procedure. In order to find improving search directions, the improvement search algorithm uses the proposed cost bounding properties. Computational results show that our lower bounding methods in branch and bound algorithm achieve a significant reduction in the search tree size that we need to traverse. Also, our recovering beam search and improvement search heuristics achieve solutions within 1% of the optimum on the average while they spent much less computational effort than the exact algorithm.  相似文献

We study the problem of scheduling n jobs that arrive over time. We consider a non-preemptive setting on a single machine. The goal is to minimize the total flow time. We use extra resource competitive analysis: an optimal off-line algorithm which schedules jobs on a single machine is compared to a more powerful on-line algorithm that has ? machines. We design an algorithm of competitive ratio , where Δ is the maximum ratio between two job sizes, and provide a lower bound which shows that the algorithm is optimal up to a constant factor for any constant ?. The algorithm works for a hard version of the problem where the sizes of the smallest and the largest jobs are not known in advance, only Δ and n are known. This gives a trade-off between the resource augmentation and the competitive ratio. We also consider scheduling on parallel identical machines. In this case the optimal off-line algorithm has m machines and the on-line algorithm has ?m machines. We give a lower bound for this case. Next, we give lower bounds for algorithms using resource augmentation on the speed. Finally, we consider scheduling with hard deadlines, and scheduling so as to minimize the total completion time.  相似文献

This study proposes an efficient exact algorithm for the precedence-constrained single-machine scheduling problem to minimize total job completion cost where machine idle time is forbidden. The proposed algorithm is based on the SSDP (Successive Sublimation Dynamic Programming) method and is an extension of the authors’ previous algorithms for the problem without precedence constraints. In this method, a lower bound is computed by solving a Lagrangian relaxation of the original problem via dynamic programming and then it is improved successively by adding constraints to the relaxation until the gap between the lower and upper bounds vanishes. Numerical experiments will show that the algorithm can solve all instances with up to 50 jobs of the precedence-constrained total weighted tardiness and total weighted earliness–tardiness problems, and most instances with 100 jobs of the former problem.  相似文献

We examine the problem of scheduling a given set of jobs on a single machine to minimize total early and tardy costs without considering machine idle time. We decompose the problem into two subproblems with a simpler structure. Then the lower bound of the problem is the sum of the lower bounds of two subproblems. A lower bound of each subproblem is obtained by Lagrangian relaxation. Rather than using the well-known subgradient optimization approach, we develop two efficient multiplier adjustment procedures with complexity O(nlog n) to solve two Lagrangian dual subproblems. A branch-and-bound algorithm based on the two efficient procedures is presented, and is used to solve problems with up to 50 jobs, hence doubling the size of problems that can be solved by existing branch-and-bound algorithms. We also propose a heuristic procedure based on the neighborhood search approach. The computational results for problems with up to 3 000 jobs show that the heuristic procedure performs much better than known heuristics for this problem in terms of both solution efficiency and quality. In addition, the results establish the effectiveness of the heuristic procedure in solving realistic problems to optimality or near optimality.  相似文献

This paper addresses the production and delivery scheduling integration problem; a manufacturer receives orders from one customer while the orders need to be processed on one or two machines and be sent to the customer in batches. Sending several jobs in batches will reduce the transportation cost but it may increase the number of tardy jobs. The objective is to minimize the sum of the total weighted number of tardy jobs and the delivery costs. The structural properties of the problem for a single machine and special cases of the two-machine flow shop problem are investigated and used to set up a new branch and bound algorithm. A heuristic algorithm for upper bound calculation and two approaches for lower bound calculation are also introduced. Results of computational tests show significant improvement over an existing dynamic programming method.  相似文献

We consider a problem of scheduling n independent jobs on m unrelated parallel machines with the objective of minimizing total tardiness. Processing times of a job on different machines may be different on unrelated parallel-machine scheduling problems. We develop several dominance properties and lower bounds for the problem, and suggest a branch and bound algorithm using them. Results of computational experiments show that the suggested algorithm gives optimal solutions for problems with up to five machines and 20 jobs in a reasonable amount of CPU time.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a heuristic for solving the problem of resource constrained preemptive scheduling in the two-stage flowshop with one machine at the first stage and parallel unrelated machines at the second stage, where renewable resources are shared among the stages, so some quantities of the same resource can be used at different stages at the same time. Availability of every resource at any moment is limited and resource requirements of jobs are arbitrary. The objective is minimization of makespan. The problem is NP-hard. The heuristic first sequences jobs on the machine at stage 1 and then solves the preemptive scheduling problem at stage 2. Priority rules which depend on processing times and resource requirements of jobs are proposed for sequencing jobs at stage 1. A column generation algorithm which involves linear programming, a tabu search algorithm and a greedy procedure is proposed to minimize the makespan at stage 2. A lower bound on the optimal makespan in which sharing of the resources between the stages is taken into account is also derived. The performance of the heuristic evaluated experimentally by comparing the solutions to the lower bound is satisfactory.  相似文献

This paper presents a branch and bound algorithm for the single machine scheduling problem 1|ri|∑Ui where the objective function is to minimize the number of late jobs. Lower bounds based on a Lagrangian relaxation and no reductions to polynomially solvable cases are proposed. Efficient elimination rules together with strong dominance relations are also used to reduce the search space. A branch and bound exploiting these techniques solves to optimality instances with up to 200 jobs, improving drastically the size of problems that could be solved by exact methods up to now.  相似文献

This paper considers two uniform parallel machine scheduling problems with fixed machine cost under the background of cloud manufacturing. The goal is to minimize the makespan with a given budget of total cost, \(\hat{U}\). All the jobs are homogeneous, i.e., the processing times of the jobs are identical. Non-preemptive and preemptive problems are studied. For the non-preemptive problem, we give a \(2[1+1{/}(h-1)]\)-approximation algorithm, where h is the number of the machine which can not be selected the first time. For the preemptive problem, we give an algorithm whose worst-case bound equals to \(1+1{/}(h-1)\). Preliminary experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithms are reasonably accurate compared with the lower bounds.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a Branch-and-Bound procedure to minimize total tardiness on one machine with arbitrary release dates. We introduce new lower bounds and we generalize some well-known dominance properties. Our procedure handles instances as large as 500 jobs although some 60 jobs instances remain open. Computational results show that the proposed approach outperforms the best known procedures.  相似文献

The problem of scheduling in permutation flowshops is considered in this paper with the objectives of minimizing the sum of weighted flowtime/sum of weighted tardiness/sum of weighted flowtime and weighted tardiness/sum of weighted flowtime, weighted tardiness and weighted earliness of jobs, with each objective considered separately. Lower bounds on the given objective (corresponding to a node generated in the scheduling tree) are developed by solving an assignment problem. Branch-and-bound algorithms are developed to obtain the best permutation sequence in each case. Our algorithm incorporates a job-based lower bound (integrated with machine-based bounds) with respect to the weighted flowtime/weighted tardiness/weighted flowtime and weighted tardiness, and a machine-based lower bound with respect to the weighted earliness of jobs. The proposed algorithms are evaluated by solving many randomly generated problems of different problem sizes. The results of an extensive computational investigation for various problem sizes are presented. In addition, one of the proposed branch-and-bound algorithms is compared with a related existing branch-and-bound algorithm.  相似文献
