A friction pair is studied under lubricant-free dry friction, hydrodynamic, and boundary lubricant conditions. It is shown that, in dry friction, the number of harmonics in the time dependence of the coordinate of the lower rubbing block decreases with increasing frequency of an applied periodic action until the interacting surfaces stick when a critical frequency is exceeded. The surfaces then move together. The behavior of a friction pair with a lubricant made of a Newtonian fluid, pseudoplastic fluid, or dilatant non-Newtonian fluid is analyzed in the hydrodynamic case. It is found that a pseudoplastic fluid or a boundary lubricant leads a intermittent (stick-slip) friction mode, which is one of the main causes of fracture of rubbing parts, over a wide parametric range.

The Rayleigh ‐ Taylor (RT) instability is investigated analytically in an inhomogeneous plasma in an external magnetic field. For the case of two distinct fluid layers separated by a sharp boundary and for a fluid of a continuously varying density, RT dispersion relations have been obtained and analyzed. Stability criteria of the excited modes are disscussed with respect to the mode propagation relative to the applied magnetic field. The magnetic field is found to act as a stabilizer up to a threshold value that can be determined from the dispersion relation.

We present here new experimental results about the waves at the horizontal free surface of a magnetic fluid submitted to a normal magnetic field. The waves are generated by a small modulation at frequency of the vertical field . Using a shadowgraph method, we are able to measure the wavevector k of the 2D waves for a given value of and . The dispersion relation of the surface waves is established experimentally. On the other hand, we propose a theoretical derivation of the dispersion equation which includes a more complete treatment of the magnetic term than the previous works. Finally, we conclude that a linear and inviscid analysis is sufficient to fit well the experimental data, except in the vicinity of the critical field where a surface instability occurs. An analytical model is presented to describe the dispersion of tracers in a power-law fluid flowing through a statistically homogeneous and isotropic porous medium. The model is an extension of Saffman's approach to the case of non-Newtonian fluids. It is shown that an effective viscosity depending on the pressure gradient and on the characteristics of the fluid, must be introduced to satisfy Darcy's law. An analytical expression of the longitudinal dispersivity is given as a function of the Peclet number Pe and of the power-law index n that characterizes the dependence of the viscosity on the shear rate . As the flow velocity increases the dispersivity obeys an asymptotic power law: . This asymptotic regime is achieved at moderate Peclet numbers with strongly non-Newtonian fluids and on the contrary at very large values when n goes to 1 ( for n=0.9). This reflects the cross-over from a scaling behaviour for towards a logarithmic behaviour predicted for Newtonian fluids (n=1). Received: 22 July 1997 / Revised and Accepted: 2 July 1998  相似文献

The lifting Hele-Shaw cell (LHSC) is used to study adhesion as well as viscous fingering. In the present paper we report a series of observations of development of the interface for different viscous fluids, both Newtonian and non-Newtonian, in a LHSC operated at a constant lifting force. Glass and perspex are used as the plates in two different sets of experiments. The objectives are 1) to measure the time required to separate the plates as a function of the lifting force and 2) to note the force above which viscous fingering appears. We find that for the Newtonian fluids, the plate separation time follows a universal power law with the lifting force, irrespective of fluid and substrate. The non-Newtonian fluids too, with proper scaling obey the same power law. The appearance of fingering, however, depends on the properties of the fluid as well as the substrate. We suggest a modified form of the capillary number which controls the onset of fingering; this new quantity, termed the “fingering parameter” involves the dielectric constants of the substrate and fluid in addition to the viscosity and surface tension.

Here we apply nanomechanical resonators to the study of oscillatory fluid dynamics. A high-resonance-frequency nanomechanical resonator generates a rapidly oscillating flow in a surrounding gaseous environment; the nature of the flow is studied through the flow-resonator interaction. Over the broad frequency and pressure range explored, we observe signs of a transition from Newtonian to non-Newtonian flow at omega tau approximately 1, where tau is a properly defined fluid relaxation time. The obtained experimental data appear to be in close quantitative agreement with a theory that predicts a purely elastic fluid response as omega tau --> infinity.

The flow instability is related to many engineering problems and belongs to a wide-ranging research field. When the problem on the transition from the laminar to the turbulence caused by the instability of the laminar is studied, the “neutral line” and the critical Reynolds number are always taken as the criterion to judge whether a certain kind of flow is stable, whose corresponding flow medium is the clear water, that is, the single-phase Newtonian fluid. And it is not studied in the traditional instability theory that the hyper-concentration flow widely exists in rivers. This shortage can be covered by this research. Study shows that the instability of non-Newtonian fluid such as hyper-concentration fluid, compared with Newtonian fluid such as clear water, is influenced by not only Reynolds number, the ratio of the inertia force and the viscous force, but also many other factors such as the sediment concentration, the concentration distribution, the grain size, the volumetric weight of the sediment and so on, which make the mechanical principle even more complex. So the results of the research can supply the scientific basis for the explanations of “slurrying river”, the turbulence intensity of the flow carrying sediment and the variance of the turbulence structure.

We derive relativistic fluid set of equations for neutrinos and electrons from relativistic Vlasov equations with Fermi weak interaction force. Using these fluid equations, we obtain a dispersion relation describing neutrino beam plasma instability, which is little different from normal dispersion relation of streaming instability. It contains new, nonelectromagnetic, neutrino-plasma (or electroweak) stable and unstable modes also. The growth of the instability is weak for the highly relativistic neutrino flux, but becomes stronger for weakly relativistic neutrino flux in the case of parameters appropriate to the early universe and supernova explosions. However, this mode is dominant only for the beam velocity greater than 0.25c and in the other limit electroweak unstable mode takes over.

We report instability of the single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNT) filled with non-Newtonian Jeffrey fluid. Our objective is to get the influences of relaxation time and retardation time of the Jeffrey fluid on the vibration frequency and the decaying rate of the amplitude of carbon nanotubes. An elastic Euler-Bernoulli beam model is used to describe vibrations and structural instability of the carbon nanotubes.A new vibration equation of an SWCNT conveying Jeffrey fluid is first derived by employing Euler-Bernoulli beam equation and Cauchy momentum equation taking constitutive relation of Jeffrey fluid into account. The complex vibrating frequencies of the SWCNT are computed by solving a cubic eigenvalue problem based upon differential quadrature method(DQM).It is interesting to find from computational results that retardation time has significant influences on the vibration frequency and the decaying rate of the amplitude.Especially, the vibration frequency decreases and critical velocity increases with the retardation time. That is to say, longer retardation time makes the SWCNT more stable.

The instability of the plane interface between two viscoelastic (Oldroydian) superposed conducting fluids permeated with suspended particles in porous medium is studied when the whole system is immersed in a uniform magnetic field. The dispersion relation for the Oldroydian viscoelastic fluid is obtained which also yields dispersion relations for Maxwellian and Newtonian fluids in special cases, in the presence of suspended particles in porous medium in hydromagnelics. The system is found to be stable for potentially stable case. The presence of magnetic field stabilizes certain wave number band whereas the system was unstable for all wave numbers in the absence of magnetic field, for the potentially unstable configuration. The growth rates increase (for certain wave numbers) and decrease (for other wave numbers) with the increase in stress relaxation time, strain retardation time, suspended particles number density and medium permeability.

We consider a superconducting material that exists in the liquid state, more precisely, in which the Meissner-Ochsenfeld effect persists in the liquid state. First, we investigate how the shape of such a hypothetical Meissner liquid will adapt to accomodate for an applied external field. In particular, we analyse the case of a droplet of Meissner fluid, and compute the elongation of the droplet and its quadrupole frequency as a function of the applied field. Next, the influence of an applied field on the flow of the liquid is studied for the case of a surface wave. We derive the dispersion relation for surface waves on an incompressible Meissner fluid. We discuss some candidate realizations of the Meissner fluids and for the case of a superconducting colloid discuss which regime of wave lengths would be most affected by the Meissner effect.

We study the patterns observed in the vicinity of a Faraday instability, in the limit of a very thin layer of viscous fluid. We numerically solve our previous model [N.O. Rojas et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 187801 (2010)] and compare our predictions to experiments. Our model captures quantitatively the threshold of instability. The direct simulation of our system permits us to predict the patterns observed in experiments.

In this paper, the effect of dispersion of magnesium oxide nanoparticles on viscosity of a mixture of water and ethylene glycol (50–50% vol.) was examined experimentally. Experiments were performed for various nanofluid samples at different temperatures and shear rates. Measurements revealed that the nanofluid samples with volume fractions of less than 1.5% had Newtonian behavior, while the sample with volume fraction of 3% showed non-Newtonian behavior. Results showed that the viscosity of nanofluids enhanced with increasing nanoparticles volume fraction and decreasing temperature. Results of sensitivity analysis revealed that the viscosity sensitivity of nanofluid samples to temperature at higher volume fractions is more than that of at lower volume fractions. Finally, because of the inability of the existing model to predict the viscosity of MgO/EG-water nanofluid, an experimental correlation has been proposed for predicting the viscosity of the nanofluid.

Modulation instability of an intense right-hand elliptically polarized laser beam propagating through an electron-positron plasma is investigated by a new method. The nonlinear dispersion relation, in which the relativistic and ponderomotive nonlinearities are taken into account, is obtained for the laser radiation in electron-positron plasma by the Lorentz transformation. The Karpman equation is generalized to the case of three dimensions with three field components. When the nonlinear frequency shift of the electromagnetic field in plasma is involved, the nonlinear evolution equation for the slowly varying envelope of the laser field is obtained. Thus, modulation instability of the intense laser beam in electron-positron plasma is studied and the temporal growth rate of the instability is derived. The analysis shows that the growth rate of modulation instability is increased significantly near the critical surface in a laser-plasma.

Modulation instability of an intense right-hand elliptically polarized laser beam propagating through magnetized plasma is investigated by a new method. The nonlinear dispersion relation, in which the relativistic and ponderomotive nonlinearities are taken into account, is obtained for the laser radiation in magnetized plasma by the Lorentz transformation. The Karpman equation is firstly generalized to the case of three dimensions with three field components. When the nonlinear frequency shift of the electromagnetic field in plasma is involved, the nonlinear evolution equation for the slowly varying envelope of the laser field is obtained. Thus, modulation instability of the intense laser beam in magnetized plasma is studied and the temporal growth rate of the instability is derived. The analysis shows that the peak growth rate of self-modulation instability is increased due to the axial magnetization of plasma. It is also shown that the growth rate of modulation instability is increased significantly near the critical surface in a laser-plasma.

We study shear-horizontal (SH) waves in a crystal plate of rotated Y-cut quartz in contact with a semi-infinite viscous fluid. The crystal plate and the fluid are governed by the equations of anisotropic elasticity and the theory of Newtonian fluids. A transcendental equation that determines the dispersion relations of the waves is obtained. Approximate analytical solutions to the equation are presented for the case of low viscosity fluids and the case of long waves whose wavelength is much larger than the plate thickness. The effects of the fluid viscosity and density on the dispersion relations of the waves are examined. The results obtained are fundamental and useful to the understanding and design of acoustic wave fluid sensors for measuring fluid viscosity or density.

We present our recent progress towards a practical implementation of a remote sensing measurement technique of oceanic temperature profiles. Our approach combines the advantages of fiber amplifiers with the high spectral resolution of Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filters. In this paper, we focus on the edge filter characteristics of an excited state Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter at moderate pump powers as the receiver unit for the Brillouin-lidar.
