The problem of steady laminar magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) mixed convection heat transfer about a vertical plate is studied numerically, taking into account the effects of Ohmic heating and viscous dissipation. A uniform magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plate. The resulting governing equations are transformed into the non-similar boundary layer equations and solved using the Keller box method. Both the aiding-buoyancy mode and the opposing-buoyancy mode of the mixed convection are examined. The velocity and temperature profiles as well as the local skin friction and local heat transfer parameters are determined for different values of the governing parameters, mainly the magnetic parameter, the Richardson number, the Eckert number and the suction/injection parameter, fw. For some specific values of the governing parameters, the results agree very well with those available in the literature. Generally, it is determined that the local skin friction coefficient and the local heat transfer coefficient increase owing to suction of fluid, increasing the Richardson number, Ri (i.e. the mixed convection parameter) or decreasing the Eckert number. This trend reverses for blowing of fluid and decreasing the Richardson number or decreasing the Eckert number. It is disclosed that the value of Ri determines the effect of the magnetic parameter on the momentum and heat transfer.  相似文献

The problem of steady laminar magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) mixed convection heat transfer about a vertical slender hollow cylinder is studied numerically, under the effect of wall conduction. A uniform magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the cylinder. The non-similar solutions using the Keller box method are obtained. The wall conduction parameter, the magnetic parameter and the Richardson number are the main parameters. For various values of these parameters the local skin friction and local heat transfer parameters are determined. The validity of the methodology is checked by comparing the results with those available in the open literature and a fairly good agreement is observed. Finally, it is determined that the local skin friction and the local heat transfer coefficients increase with an increase the magnetic parameter Mn and buoyancy parameter Ri and decrease with conjugate heat transfer parameter p.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of the viscous dissipation in steady, laminar mixed convection heat transfer from a heated/cooled vertical flat plate is investigated in both aiding and opposing buoyancy situations. The external flow field is assumed to be uniform. The governing systems of partial differential equations are solved numerically using the finite difference method. A parametric study is performed in order to illustrate the interactive influences of the governing parameters, mainly, the Richardson number, Ri (also known as the mixed convection parameter) and the Eckert number, Ec on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as the friction and heat transfer coefficients. Based on the facts the free stream is either in parallel or reverse to the gravity direction and the plate is heated or cooled, different flow situations are identified. The influence of the viscous dissipation on the heat transfer varied according to the situation. For some limiting cases, the obtained results are validated by comparing with those available from the existing literature. An expression correlating Nu in terms of Pr, Ri and Ec is developed.  相似文献

We investigate the steady two-dimensional flow of an incompressible water based nanofluid over a linearly semi-infinite stretching sheet in the presence of magnetic field numerically. The basic boundary layer equations for momentum and heat transfer are non-linear partial differential equations. Lie symmetry group transformations are used to convert the boundary layer equations into non-linear ordinary differential equations. The dimensionless governing equations for this investigation are solved numerically using Nachtsheim–Swigert shooting iteration technique together with fourth order Runge–Kutta integration scheme. Effects of the nanoparticle volume fraction ϕ, magnetic parameter M, Prandtl number Pr on the velocity and the temperature profiles are presented graphically and examined for different metallic and non-metallic nanoparticles. The skin friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are also discussed for different nanoparticles.  相似文献

The effects of suction and injection on steady laminar mixed convection boundary layer flow over a permeable horizontal flat plate in a viscous and incompressible fluid is investigated in this paper. The similarity solutions of the governing boundary layer equations are obtained for some values of the suction and injection parameter f0, the constant exponent n of the wall temperature as well as the mixed convection parameter λ. The resulting system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations is solved numerically for both assisting and opposing flow regimes using a finite-difference scheme known as the Keller-box method. Numerical results for the reduced skin friction coefficient, the reduced local Nusselt number, and the velocity and temperature profiles are obtained for various values of the parameters considered. Dual solutions are found to exist for the opposing flow.  相似文献

Numerical results are presented for heat and mass transfer effect on hydromagnetic flow of a moving permeable vertical surface. An analysis is performed to study the momentum, heat and mass transfer characteristics of MHD natural convection flow over a moving permeable surface. The surface is maintained at linear temperature and concentration variations. The non-linear coupled boundary layer equations were transformed and the resulting ordinary differential equations were solved by perturbation technique [Aziz A, Na TY. Perturbation methods in heat transfer. Berlin: Springer-Verlag; 1984. p. 1–184; Kennet Cramer R, Shih-I Pai. Magneto fluid dynamics for engineers and applied physicists 1973;166–7]. The solution is found to be dependent on several governing parameter, including the magnetic field strength parameter, Prandtl number, Schmidt number, buoyancy ratio and suction/blowing parameter, a parametric study of all the governing parameters is carried out and representative results are illustrated to reveal a typical tendency of the solutions. Numerical results for the dimensionless velocity profiles, the temperature profiles, the concentration profiles, the local friction coefficient and the local Nusselt number are presented for various combinations of parameters.  相似文献

A study of MHD mixed convection flow through porous space in the presence of a temperature dependent heat source in a vertical channel with radiation has been analyzed. The Rosseland approximation is considered in the modeling of the conduction radiation heat transfer and temperatures of the walls are assumed constants. The governing equations are expressed in non-dimensional form and the series solutions of coupled system of equations are constructed for velocity and temperature using homotopy analysis method (HAM). The effects of various involved parameters on the velocity and temperature field are shown and discussed. The coefficient of skin friction, and the rate of heat transfer coefficient are obtained and illustrated graphically.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical analysis of the flow and heat transfer characteristics of natural convection in a micropolar fluid flowing along a vertical slender hollow circular cylinder with conduction effects. The nonlinear formulation governing equations and their associated boundary conditions are first cast into dimensionless forms by a local non-similar transformation. The resulting equations are then solved using the cubic spline collocation method and the finite difference scheme. This study investigates the effects of the conjugate heat transfer parameter, the micropolar parameter, and the Prandtl number on the flow and the thermal fields. The conjugate heat transfer parameter reduces the solid–liquid interfacial temperature, the skin friction factor and the local heat transfer rate. The effect of wall conduction on the local heat transfer rate, interfacial temperature and skin friction factor is found to be more pronounced in a system with a greater Prandtl number. Moreover, the current results are comparing with Newtonian fluid to obtain the important results of the heat transfer and flow characteristics on micropolar fluids. It shows that an increase in the interfacial temperature, a reduction in the skin friction factor, and a reduction in the local heat transfer rate are identified in the current micropolar fluid case.  相似文献

The present paper presents a numerical solution of flow and heat transfer outside a stretching permeable cylinder. The governing system of partial differential equations is converted to ordinary differential equations by using similarity transformations, which are then solved numerically using the Keller-box method. The main purpose of the present study is to investigate the effects of the governing parameters, namely the suction/injection parameter, Prandtl number, and Reynolds number on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as the skin friction coefficient and the Nusselt number. The results are shown graphically. The values of the skin friction coefficient and the Nusselt number are presented in tables.  相似文献

The present model concentrates on three-dimensional steady incompressible flow of an Eyring-Powell nanofluid past an exponentially stretching sheet with magnetic field. The Cattaneo–Christov heat flux with convective boundary condition is accounted for. Shooting method is the instrumental for obtaining numerical solution of the transformed-converted system of the mathematical models. Behavior of the determining thermo-physical parameters on the velocity, temperature, skin friction, heat transfer rate, and finally isotherms are considered. The major relevant outcomes of the current investigation are that increment in Eyring-Powell parameter uplifts flow velocity, while that peters out the fluid temperature. Enhanced values of the mixed convection parameter weakened the skin friction coefficient while it slightly strengthened the rate of heat transfer.  相似文献

The group theoretic method is applied for solving problem of combined magneto-hydrodynamic heat and mass transfer of non-Darcy natural convection about an impermeable horizontal cylinder in a non-Newtonian power law fluid embedded in porous medium under coupled thermal and mass diffusion, inertia resistance, magnetic field, thermal radiation effects. The application of one-parameter groups reduces the number of independent variables by one and consequently, the system of governing partial differential equations with the boundary conditions reduces to a system of ordinary differential equations with appropriate boundary conditions. The ordinary differential equations are solved numerically for the velocity using shooting method. The effects of magnetic parameter M, Ergun number Er, power law (viscosity) index n, buoyancy ratio N, radiation parameter Rd, Prandtl number Pr and Lewis number Le on the velocity, temperature fields within the boundary layer, heat and mass transfer are presented graphically and discussed.  相似文献

The aiding-buoyancy mixed convection heat transfer in Bingham plastic fluids from an isothermal cylinder of elliptical and circular shape in a vertical adiabatic channel is numerically investigated. For a fixed shape of the elliptical cylinder E = 2 (ratio of major to minor axes), the effect of confinement is studied for three values of blockage ratio, B, defined as the ratio of the channel width to the circumference of the cylinder/π, as 6.5, 2.17 and 1.3. In order to delineate the role of cross-section of the cylinder, results are also presented here for a circular cylinder of the same heat transfer area as the elliptical cylinder. The results presented herein span the range of conditions as: Bingham number, 0 ≤ Bn ≤ 100, Reynolds number, 1 ≤ Re ≤ 40, and Prandtl number, 1 ≤ Pr ≤ 100 over the range of Richardson number Ri = 0 (pure forced convection) to Ri = 10. Extensive results on drag coefficient, local and surface averaged values of the Nusselt number and yield surfaces are presented herein to elucidate the combined effects of buoyancy, blockage ratio and fluid yield stress. The morphology of the yield surfaces shows that the unyielded plug regions formed upstream and downstream of the cylinder grow faster at low Reynolds numbers with the increasing yield stress effects under the weak buoyancy forces, i.e., small values of Grashof or Richardson number. The heat transfer enhancement is observed with the increasing channel-confinement due to the sharpening of the temperature gradients near the surface of the cylinder. The average Nusselt number shows a positive dependence on the Reynolds number, Prandtl number and Richardson number irrespective of the shape of the cylinder or the type of fluid. By employing the modified definitions of the dimensionless parameters (based on the two choices of the overall effective fluid velocity), predictive correlations have been established for estimating the value of the average Nusselt number in a new application.  相似文献

Homotopy analysis method (HAM) is employed to investigate the momentum, heat and mass transfer characteristics of MHD natural convection flow and heat generation fluid driven by a continuously moving permeable surface immersed in a fluid saturated porous medium. The solution is found to be dependent on several governing parameters, including the magnetic field strength parameter, Prandtl number, Darcy number, the dimensionless inertia coefficient, the dimensionless heat generation/absorption coefficient and the dimensionless suction/blowing coefficient. A parametric study of all governing parameters is carried out and representative results are illustrated to reveal a typical tendency of the solutions. Representative results are presented for velocity and temperature distributions as well as the local friction coefficient and local Nusselt number. Finally, a proper discussion is derived on the obtained results and some remarkable conclusions are mentioned.  相似文献

The effect of variable viscosity on laminar mixed convection flow and heat transfer along a semi-infinite unsteady stretching sheet taking into account the effect of viscous dissipation is studied. The flow of the fluid and subsequent heat transfer from the stretching surface is investigated with the aid of suitable transformation variables. Solutions for the velocity and temperature fields are obtained for some representative values of the unsteadiness parameter, variable viscosity parameter, mixed convection parameter and Eckert number. Typical velocity and temperature profiles, the local skin friction coefficient and the local heat transfer rate are presented at selected controlling parameters.  相似文献

A numerical model is developed to study magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) mixed convection from a heated vertical plate embedded in a Newtonian fluid saturated sparsely packed porous medium by considering the variation of permeability, porosity and thermal conductivity. The boundary layer flow in the porous medium is governed by Forchheimer–Brinkman extended Darcy model. The conservation equations that govern the problem are reduced to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations by using similarity transformations. Because of non-linearity, the governing equations are solved numerically. The effects of magnetic field on velocity and temperature distributions are studied in detail by considering uniform permeability (UP) and variable permeability (VP) of the porous medium and the results are discussed graphically. Besides, skin friction and Nusselt number are also computed for various physical parameters governing the problem under consideration. It is found that the inertial parameter has a significant influence in increasing the flow field and the rate of heat transfer for variable permeability case. The important finding of the present work is that the magnetic field has considerable effects on the boundary layer velocity and on the rate of heat transfer for variable permeability of the porous medium. Further, the results obtained under the limiting conditions were found to be in good agreement with the existing ones.  相似文献

Non-Darcy flow and heat characteristics over a stretching sheet is presented here by taking into account of Ohmic dissipation and thermal radiation effects. The governing fundamental equations are first transformed into system of ordinary differential equations using self-similarity transformation and they are then solved numerically by using the fifth-order Runge–Kutta–Fehlberg method with shooting technique for some values of the physical parameters. Important features of the flow and heat transfer characteristic for different values of thermal radiation, magnetic and electric fields are analyzed and discussed. Favorable comparisons with previously published work on various special cases of the problem are obtained. Numerical results for the velocity and temperature profiles for a prescribed magnetic field and electric field parameter as well as the development of the local skin-friction coefficient and local Nusselt number with radiation parameters are reported graphically for various parametric conditions to show interesting aspects of the numerical solution.  相似文献

A numerical model is developed to examine the combined effects of Soret and Dufour on mixed convection magnetohydrodynamic heat and mass transfer in micropolar fluid-saturated Darcian porous medium in the presence of thermal radiation, non-uniform heat source/sink and Ohmic dissipation. The governing boundary layer equations for momentum, angular momentum (microrotation), energy and species transfer are transformed to a set of non-linear ordinary differential equations by using similarity solutions which are then solved numerically based on shooting algorithm with Runge–Kutta–Fehlberg integration scheme over the entire range of physical parameters with appropriate boundary conditions. The influence of Darcy number, Prandtl number, Schmidt number, Soret number and Dufour number, magnetic parameter, local thermal Grashof number and local solutal Grashof number on velocity, temperature and concentration fields are studied graphically. Finally, the effects of related physical parameters on local Skin-friction, local Nusselt number and local Sherwood number are also studied. Results showed that the fields were influenced appreciably by the Soret and Dufour effects, thermal radiation and magnetic field, etc.  相似文献
