The conduction–convection heat loss from a viscoelastic liquid, subjected to two-dimensional flow within the core of a cross-flow heat exchanger arrangement with a mixed or unmixed external fluid, is investigated with direct numerical simulations. A numerical algorithm based on the finite difference method is implemented in time and space with the Giesekus constitutive model for the viscoelastic liquids. The core-fluid is subjected to an initial Poiseuille flow, driven by an adverse pressure gradient and its temperature varies in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. The results show that a viscoelastic core-fluid choice leads to slightly higher temperature losses within the core-fluid stream as compared to a corresponding Newtonian fluid. As is expected, we also observe significantly higher temperature drops within the core-fluid for the case of unmixed ambient fluids as opposed to the mixed external fluid.  相似文献

The non axisymmetric motion produced by a buoyancy-induced secondary flow of a viscoelastic fluid over an infinite rotating disk in a verticalplane with a magnetic field applied normal to the disk has been studied. The governing Navier Stokes equations and the energy equation admit a self similar solution. The system of ordinary differential equations has been solved numerically using Runge-Kutta Gill subroutine. The turning moment for the viscoelastic fluid is found to be less than that of the Newtonian fluid but the turning moment is increased due to the magnetic parameter. The resultant force due to the buoyancy-induced secondary flow increases with the magnetic parameter but reduces as the viscoelastic parameter increases. The quantity of fluid, which is pumped outwards due to the centrifuging action of the disk, for the viscoelastic fluid is more than that of the Newtonian fluid. The buoyancy-induced secondary flow boundary layer is much thicker than the primary boundary layer thickness. The thermal boundary layer due to the primary flow increases with the magnetic parameter decreases as the viscoelastic parameter increases. The heat transfer increases with the viscoelastic parameter but decreases as the magnetic parameter increases. The effect of the viscoelastic parameter is more pronounced on the secondary flow than on the primary flow.  相似文献

In this paper, the mathematical model of free convection boundary layer flow on a solid sphere with Newtonian heating, in which the heat transfer from the surface is proportional to the local surface temperature, is considered. The transformed boundary layer equations are solved numerically using an efficient numerical scheme known as the Keller-box method. Numerical solutions are obtained for the local wall temperature, the local skin friction coefficient, as well as the velocity and temperature profiles. The features of the flow and heat transfer characteristics for different values of the Prandtl number Pr and conjugate parameter γ are analyzed and discussed.  相似文献

We present the numerical analysis of a coupled method for the numerical simulation of transient viscoelastic flow obeying a differential constitutive equation with a Newtonian viscosity. The scheme used is based on Euler implicit method in time and maintains at each time step a couple of the velocity u and the viscoelastic part of the stress σ. Approximation in space is made by finite element method. The approximate stress, velocity and pressure are, respectively, P1-continuous, p2-continuous, and P1-continuous. Upwinding needed for convection of σ is made by a ““““Streamline Upwind Petrov Galerkin““““ method (SUPG).  相似文献

Fractional shear stress and Cattaneo heat flux models are introduced in characterizing unsteady Marangoni convection heat transfer of viscoelastic Maxwell fluid over a flat surface. Governing equations and boundary condition are formulated firstly via the balance between the surface tension and shear stress. Numerical solutions are obtained by new developed numerical technique and some novel phenomena are found. Results shown that the fractional derivative parameters, Marangoni number and power law exponent have significant influence on characteristics velocity and temperature fields. As fractional derivative parameters increase, the temperature profiles rise remarkably and the viscoelastic effects of the fluid enhance with delayed response to surface tension, however the temperature profiles decline significantly with a thinner thickness of thermal boundary layer with the increase of Marangoni number. The average skin friction coefficient increases with the augment of Marangoni number, while the average Nusselt number decreases for larger values of power law exponent.  相似文献

This work presents a boundary layer analysis about variable viscosity effects on the double-diffusive convection near a vertical truncated cone in a fluid-saturated porous medium with constant wall temperature and concentration. The viscosity of the fluid is assumed to be an inverse linear function of the temperature. A boundary layer analysis is employed to derive the nondimensional nonsimilar governing equations, and the transformed boundary layer governing equations are solved by the cubic spline collocation method to yield computationally efficient numerical solutions. The obtained results are found to be in good agreement with previous papers on special cases of the problem. Results for local Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are presented as functions of viscosity-variation parameter, buoyancy ratio, and Lewis number. For a porous medium saturated with a Newtonian fluid with viscosity proportional to an inverse linear function of temperature, higher value of viscosity-variation parameter leads to the decrease of the viscosity in fluid flow, thus increasing the fluid velocity as well as the local Nusselt number and the local Sherwood number.  相似文献

In order to reduce the numerical cost of three dimensional flow problems with geometrical symmetry, the use of symmetric boundary conditions is standard. For Newtonian fluid flow problems this approximation is usually appropriate, particularly when the Reynolds number is small. In the case of viscoelastic fluid flow simulations with stabilization techniques, such as the so-called DEVSS and/or Log-Conformation tensor methods, at high Deborah number flows this implementation is not straightforward, as in the Newtonian case. It is well known that viscoelastic models (e.g. Maxwellian models), show (purely) elastic flow instabilities when the Deborah number is increased above a critical value, even under creeping flow conditions. In this work we present numerical simulations with different stabilization techniques and different differential viscoelastic models at high Deborah number flows. As a test-case, we compare the flow in a full two-dimensional cross-slot geometry to show the asymmetrical behavior of the viscoelastic fluid flow. (© 2013 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. For flow inside a four-to-one contraction domain, we minimize the vortex that occurs in the corner region by controlling the heat flux along the corner boundary. The problem of matching a desired temperature along the outflow boundary is also considered. The energy equation is coupled with the mass, momentum, and constitutive equations through the assumption that viscosity depends on temperature. The latter three equations are a non-isothermal version of the three-field Stokes–Oldroyd model, formulated to have the same dependent variable set as the equations governing viscoelastic flow. The state and adjoint equations are solved using the finite element method. Previous efforts in optimal control of fluid flows assume a temperature-dependent Newtonian viscosity when describing the model equations, but make the simplifying assumption of a constant Newtonian viscosity when carrying out computations. This assumption is not made in the current work.  相似文献

An analysis has been performed to study the natural convection of a non‐Newtonian fluid between two infinite parallel vertical flat plates and the effects of the non‐Newtonian nature of fluid on the heat transfer are studied. The governing boundary layer and temperature equations for this problem are reduced to an ordinary form and are solved by Adomian decomposition method (ADM) and numerical method. Velocity and temperature profiles are shown graphically. The obtained results are valid for the whole solution domain with high accuracy. These methods can be easily extended to other linear and non‐linear equations and so can be found widely applicable in engineering and science. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work presents nonsimilar boundary layer solutions for double-diffusion natural convection near a sphere with constant wall heat and mass fluxes in a micropolar fluid. A coordinate transformation is employed to transform the governing equations into nondimensional nonsimilar boundary layer equations and the obtained boundary layer equations are then solved by the cubic spline collocation method. Results for the local Nusselt number and the local Sherwood number are presented as functions of the vortex viscosity parameter, Schmidt number, buoyancy ratio, and Prandtl number. Higher vortex viscosity tends to retard the flow, and thus decreases the local convection heat and mass transfer coefficients, raising the wall temperature and concentration. Moreover, the local convection heat and mass transfer coefficients near a sphere in Newtonian fluids are higher than those in micropolar fluids.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical analysis of the flow and heat transfer characteristics of natural convection in a micropolar fluid flowing along a vertical slender hollow circular cylinder with conduction effects. The nonlinear formulation governing equations and their associated boundary conditions are first cast into dimensionless forms by a local non-similar transformation. The resulting equations are then solved using the cubic spline collocation method and the finite difference scheme. This study investigates the effects of the conjugate heat transfer parameter, the micropolar parameter, and the Prandtl number on the flow and the thermal fields. The conjugate heat transfer parameter reduces the solid–liquid interfacial temperature, the skin friction factor and the local heat transfer rate. The effect of wall conduction on the local heat transfer rate, interfacial temperature and skin friction factor is found to be more pronounced in a system with a greater Prandtl number. Moreover, the current results are comparing with Newtonian fluid to obtain the important results of the heat transfer and flow characteristics on micropolar fluids. It shows that an increase in the interfacial temperature, a reduction in the skin friction factor, and a reduction in the local heat transfer rate are identified in the current micropolar fluid case.  相似文献

A numerical model is developed to study magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) mixed convection from a heated vertical plate embedded in a Newtonian fluid saturated sparsely packed porous medium by considering the variation of permeability, porosity and thermal conductivity. The boundary layer flow in the porous medium is governed by Forchheimer–Brinkman extended Darcy model. The conservation equations that govern the problem are reduced to a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations by using similarity transformations. Because of non-linearity, the governing equations are solved numerically. The effects of magnetic field on velocity and temperature distributions are studied in detail by considering uniform permeability (UP) and variable permeability (VP) of the porous medium and the results are discussed graphically. Besides, skin friction and Nusselt number are also computed for various physical parameters governing the problem under consideration. It is found that the inertial parameter has a significant influence in increasing the flow field and the rate of heat transfer for variable permeability case. The important finding of the present work is that the magnetic field has considerable effects on the boundary layer velocity and on the rate of heat transfer for variable permeability of the porous medium. Further, the results obtained under the limiting conditions were found to be in good agreement with the existing ones.  相似文献

In this paper, the study the momentum and heat transfer characteristics in an incompressible electrically conducting non‐Newtonian boundary layer flow of a viscoelastic fluid over a stretching sheet. The partial differential equations governing the flow and heat transfer characteristics are converted into highly nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations by similarity transformations. The resultant coupled highly nonlinear ordinary differential equations are solved by means of, homotopy analysis method (HAM) for constructing an approximate solution of heat transfer in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) viscoelastic boundary layer flow over a stretching sheet with non‐uniform heat source. The proposed method is a strong and easy to use analytic tool for nonlinear problems and does not need small parameters in the equations. The HAM solutions contain an auxiry parameter, which provides a convenient way of controlling the convergence region of series solutions. The results obtained here reveal that the proposed method is very effective and simple for solving nonlinear evolution equations. The method is straightforward and concise, and it can also be applied to other nonlinear evolution equations in physics. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

An analysis has been carried out to study the flow and heat transfer characteristics for MHD viscoelastic boundary layer flow over an impermeable stretching sheet with space and temperature dependent internal heat generation/absorption (non-uniform heat source/sink), viscous dissipation, thermal radiation and magnetic field due to frictional heating. The flow is generated due to linear stretching of the sheet and influenced by uniform magnetic field, which is applied vertically in the flow region. The governing partial differential equations for the flow and heat transfer are transformed into ordinary differential equations by a suitable similarity transformation. The governing equations with the appropriate conditions are solved exactly. The effects of viscoelastic parameter and magnetic parameter on skin friction and the effects of viscous dissipation, non-uniform heat source/sink and the thermal radiation on heat transfer characteristics for two general cases namely, the prescribed surface temperature (PST) case and the prescribed wall heat flux (PHF) case are presented graphically and discussed. The numerical results for the wall temperature gradient (the Nusselt number) are presented in tables and are discussed.  相似文献

This paper deals with the double-diffusive boundary layer flow of non-Newtonian nanofluid over a stretching sheet. In this model, where binary nanofluid is used, the Brownian motion and thermophoresis are classified as the main mechanisms which are responsible for the enhancement of the convection features of the nanofluid. The boundary layer equations governed by the partial differential equations are transformed into a set of ordinary differential equations with the help of group theory transformations. The variational finite element method (FEM) is used to solve these ordinary differential equations. We have examined the effects of different controlling parameters, namely, the Brownian motion parameter, the thermophoresis parameter, modified Dufour number, viscoelastic parameter, Prandtl number, regular Lewis number, Dufour Lewis number, and nanofluid Lewis number on the flow field and heat transfer characteristics. Graphical display of the numerical examine are performed to illustrate the influence of various flow parameters on the velocity, temperature, concentration, reduced Nusselt, reduced Sherwood and reduced nanofluid Sherwood number distributions. The present study has many applications in coating and suspensions, movement of biological fluids, cooling of metallic plate, melt-spinning, heat exchangers technology, and oceanography.  相似文献

Viscoelastic fluids are a special class of non-Newtonian fluids. There are several types of viscoelastic fluid models, and all of them have a complex rheological response in comparison to Newtonian fluids. This response can be viewed as a combination of viscous and elastic effects and non-linear phenomena. This complex physics makes a numerical simulation a rather challenging task, even in simple test-cases. Studies presented in this paper are numerical studies of the viscoelastic fluid flow in several test cases. These studies have been done in OpenFOAM, an open-source CFD package. Implementation of viscoelastic models and a solver is only available in a community driven version of software (OpenFOAM-ext). One of the goals of research in this paper was to test the solver and models on some simple test cases. We considered start-up and pulsating flows of viscoelastic fluid in a channel and a circular pipe. The important thing is that an analytical solution can be found in these cases, making in possible to test all aspects of numerical simulation in OpenFOAM. Obtained results showed an excellent agreement with the analytical solution for both velocity and stress components. These results encouraged authors' motivation and a choice to use OpenFOAM for simulation of viscoelastic flows. We hope that our research will make a contribution to the OpenFOAM community. Our plan for the further research is a simulation of blood flow in arteries with the viscoelastic solver. (© 2013 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Summary. The aim of this work is to study a decoupled algorithm of a fixed point for solving a finite element (FE) problem for the approximation of viscoelastic fluid flow obeying an Oldroyd B differential model. The interest for this algorithm lies in its applications to numerical simulation and in the cost of computing. Furthermore it is easy to bring this algorithm into play. The unknowns are the viscoelastic part of the extra stress tensor, the velocity and the pressure. We suppose that the solution is sufficiently smooth and small. The approximation of stress, velocity and pressure are resp. discontinuous, continuous, continuous FE. Upwinding needed for convection of , is made by discontinuous FE. The method consists to solve alternatively a transport equation for the stress, and a Stokes like problem for velocity and pressure. Previously, results of existence of the solution for the approximate problem and error bounds have been obtained using fixed point techniques with coupled algorithm. In this paper we show that the mapping of the decoupled fixed point algorithm is locally (in a neighbourhood of ) contracting and we obtain existence, unicity (locally) of the solution of the approximate problem and error bounds. Heat and mass transfer effects in the three-dimensional mixed convection flow of a viscoelastic fluid with internal heat source/sink and chemical reaction have been investigated in the present work. The flow generation is because of an exponentially stretching surface. Magnetic field normal to the direction of flow is considered. Convective conditions at the surface are also encountered. Appropriate similarity transformations are utilized to reduce the boundary layer partial differential equations into the ordinary differential equations. The homotopy analysis method is used to develop the solution expressions. Impacts of different controlling parameters such as ratio parameter, Hartman number, internal heat source/sink, chemical reaction, mixed convection, concentration buoyancy parameter and Biot numbers on the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are analyzed. The local Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are sketched and examined.  相似文献
