We have studied the low temperature phase diagram and water activities of the ammonium sulfate/maleic acid/water system using differential scanning calorimetry and infrared spectroscopy of thin films. Using the results from our experiments, we have mapped the solid/liquid ternary phase diagram, determined the water activities based on the freezing point depression, and determined the ice/maleic acid phase boundary as well as the ternary eutectic composition and temperature. We also compare our results to the predictions of the extended AIM aerosol thermodynamics model and find good agreement for the ice melting points in the ice primary phase field of this system; however significant differences were found with respect to phase boundaries, maleic acid dissolution, and ammonium sulfate dissolution.  相似文献

We have studied the low temperature phase diagram and water activities of the ammonium sulfate/malic acid/water system using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) of thin films. Using the results from our experiments we have mapped the ice primary phase region of the solid/liquid ternary phase diagram. In our DSC and IR experiments we observe ice nucleation in all samples and ammonium sulfate in some samples, which were cooled to 183 K. However, we only observed malic acid nucleation in IR experiments, where the sample was in contact with ZnSe windows. We also compare our results to the predictions of the Extended AIM Aerosol Thermodynamics Model (E-AIM) and find good agreement for the ice melting points in the ice primary phase field of this system; however, the E-AIM has difficulty predicting malic acid crystallization.  相似文献

We have experimentally investigated the water and sulfuric acid-rich regions of the H2SO4/(NH4)2SO4/H2O ternary liquid/solid phase diagram using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and infrared spectroscopy of thin films. We present the liquid/solid ternary phase diagram for temperatures below 373 K and H2SO4 concentrations below 60 wt %. We have determined two ternary eutectics and two tributary reaction points for this system in the regions studied. It is also seen that sulfuric acid tetrahydrate (SAT) forms as a metastable solid over a large concentration range. Two true binary systems have been identified: ice/letovicite and SAT/ammonium bisulfate. Finally, we have compared our results to the predictions of the aerosol inorganics model and have found significant differences both in the final melting points and in the location of some of the phase boundaries including a significant discrepancy in the invariant points predicted versus those observed.  相似文献

Atmospheric aerosol particles are important in many atmospheric processes such as: light scattering, light absorption, and cloud formation. Oxidation reactions continuously change the chemical composition of aerosol particles, especially the organic mass component, which is often the dominant fraction. These ageing processes are poorly understood but are known to significantly affect the cloud formation potential of aerosol particles. In this study we investigate the effect of humidity and ozone on the chemical composition of two model organic aerosol systems: oleic acid and arachidonic acid. These two acids are also compared to maleic acid an aerosol system we have previously studied using the same techniques. The role of relative humidity in the oxidation scheme of the three carboxylic acids is very compound specific. Relative humidity was observed to have a major influence on the oxidation scheme of maleic acid and arachidonic acid, whereas no dependence was observed for the oxidation of oleic acid. In both, maleic acid and arachidonic acid, an evaporation of volatile oxidation products could only be observed when the particle was exposed to high relative humidities. The particle phase has a strong effect on the particle processing and the effect of water on the oxidation processes. Oleic acid is liquid under all conditions at room temperature (dry or elevated humidity, pure or oxidized particle). Thus ozone can easily diffuse into the bulk of the particle irrespective of the oxidation conditions. In addition, water does not influence the oxidation reactions of oleic acid particles, which is partly explained by the structure of oxidation intermediates. The low water solubility of oleic acid and its ozonolysis products limits the effect of water. This is very different for maleic and arachidonic acid, which change their phase from liquid to solid upon oxidation or upon changes in humidity. In a solid particle the reactions of ozone and water with the organic particle are restricted to the particle surface and hence different regimes of reactivity are dictated by particle phase. The potential relevance of these three model systems to mimic ambient atmospheric processes is discussed.  相似文献

In order to study the keto and enol forms of cyanuric acid derivatives in the solid state, we have synthesized bis(2,4-benzyloxy)-6-(5H)-one-1,3,5-triazine, 1. Computational investigations indicate that keto form is more stable than enol form in both gas phase and solution phase by 9.69–11.18 kcal mol−1 IR and crystallographic analysis shows that 1 exists in keto form in the solid state also. To obtain the enol form in the solid state, we adopted co-crystallization with an organic base. The crystal structures of both keto/amine and the enol/imine forms (in a co-crystal) are reported. Malonic acid has been observed in the free troposphere and as a component of tropospheric aerosol, among other dicarboxylic acids. These aerosols can uptake ammonia, which partially or completely neutralizes the acids. Therefore, the impact of ammoniated dicarboxylic acids on the phases that can exist in aerosols at atmospheric temperatures needs investigation. To that end, the low temperature, solid/liquid phase diagrams of ammonium hydrogen malonate/water, ammonium malonate/water, and triammonium hydrogen malonate/water have been investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and infrared spectroscopy of thin films. Results show that the order of increasing solubility is triammonium hydrogen malonate, ammonium hydrogen malonate, malonic acid, and ammonium malonate. We have also determined a hydrate may form in the ammonium malonate system and decompose below 240 K. We report water activities at the ice melting points for each system up to the respective eutectic concentrations, and find for a given mole fraction of water, increasing ammonium content leads to decreasing water activity coefficients.  相似文献

Ice Ih has been studied by path-integral molecular dynamics simulations, using the effective q-TIP4P/F potential model for flexible water. This has allowed us to analyze finite-temperature quantum effects in this solid phase from 25 to 300 K at ambient pressure. Among these effects we find a negative thermal expansion of ice at low temperatures, which does not appear in classical molecular dynamics simulations. The compressibility derived from volume fluctuations gives results in line with experimental data. We have analyzed isotope effects in ice Ih by considering normal, heavy, and tritiated water. In particular, we studied the effect of changing the isotopic mass of hydrogen on the kinetic energy and atomic delocalization in the crystal as well as on structural properties such as interatomic distances and molar volume. For D(2)O ice Ih at 100 K we obtained a decrease in molar volume and intramolecular O-H distance of 0.6% and 0.4%, respectively, as compared to H(2)O ice.  相似文献

Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) are found in different species from polar, alpine, and subarctic regions where they serve to inhibit ice crystal growth by adsorption to ice surfaces. Computational methods have the power to investigate the antifreeze mechanism in atomic detail. Molecular dynamics simulations of water under different conditions have been carried out to test our water model for simulations of biological macromolecules in extreme conditions: very low temperatures (200 K) and at the ice/liquid water interface. We show that the flexible F3C water model reproduces properties of water in the solid phase (ice I(h)), the supercooled liquid phase, and at the ice/liquid water interface. Additionally, the hydration of the type III AFP from ocean pout was studied as a function of temperature. Hydration waters on the ice-binding surface of the AFP were less distorted and more tetrahedral than elsewhere on the surface. More ice-like hydrating water structures formed on the ice-binding surface of the protein such that it created an ice-like structure in water within its first hydration layer but not beyond, suggesting that this portion of the protein has high affinity for ice surfaces.  相似文献

The estimation of solid–liquid phase equilibrium is important for the design, development, and operation of many industrial processes because of application in many manufacturing fields such as cosmetic, pharmaceutic, and biotechnology industries. In this work, we measured solid–liquid phase equilibrium of six fatty acid binary mixtures using the DSC technique and developed thermodynamic approaches for binary fatty acid mixtures to estimate melting temperatures as a function of mole fraction in solid–liquid phase equilibrium. Derivation of NRTL and UNIQUAC activity models was developed to predict melting temperatures and latent heat to achieve eutectic points of undecylic acid, pentadecylic acid, margaric acid, and stearic acid six pairwise binary mixtures. The fatty acids eutectic mixtures are appropriate for heat water systems, phase clothes, concrete, and other similar applications. The results showed low deviations from experimental data measured in this study.

Acetic acid vapor-deposited on ultrathin noncrystalline ice (NCI) and polycrystalline ice (PCI) films (less than 6 nm thick) under ultrahigh vacuum conditions has been investigated by using Fourier Transform Infrared Reflection-Absorption Spectroscopy. Pristine acetic acid deposited at 123 K (on a copper support) appears as an amorphous solid, which undergoes an irreversible phase transformation to a more structurally ordered (polycrystalline) form upon annealing to 153 K. Acetic acid is found to adsorb on NCI and PCI films initially through hydrogen bonding between C=O and dangling OH (of ice), followed by the formation of multilayers at 123 K. Thermal evolution studies of a low exposure of acetic acid on the ultrathin NCI and PCI films show that acetic acid undergoes coevaporation with water likely as an acetic acid hydrate at 155 K, which continues until the entire ice film has been exhausted at 165 K. Above 165 K, the remaining acetic acid solid appears to evaporate without undergoing the phase transformation, in contrast to the case of a high acetic acid exposure. Coevaporation of acetic acid with water is also found to proceed at a faster rate than the subsequent evaporation of acetic acid, which is consistent with the weaker interactions observed in the H-bonded acetic acid hydrate than that in acetic acid solid.  相似文献

A series of lanthanide coordination polymers, [LnIII(mal)(ox)0.5(H2O)2]·2H2O (Ln = Pr ( 1 ), Nd ( 2 ), and La ( 3 ); H2mal= maleic acid; H2ox = oxalic acid), were synthesized firstly by the reaction of LnIII nitrate salts with maleic anhydrid and oxalic acid under hydrothermal conditions and were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, and single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. X‐ray diffraction analyses reveal that they are crystallized in orthorhombic space group Fddd. Lanthanide metal center atom (Ln) and its corresponding centrosymmtric atom link through two chelating/bridging bidentate carboxyl groups of maleic acid ligands to form an infinite inorganic rod‐shaped building unit. These rod‐shaped building units were linked to each other through the carbon atoms of the maleate anions on the [110] plane to form lanthanide‐maleic acid layers. The oxalic acid pillared lanthanide‐maleic acid layers with intersected channels by free water molecules consist of a 3D framework structure. The thermogravimetric analyses of 1 – 3 were discussed in detail. The courses of the thermal decomposition of complexes are similar.  相似文献

We have studied the ammonium bisulfate/water system using thermal analysis (differential scanning calorimetry) and infrared spectroscopy of thin films. Our results for the melting points for ice and letovicite are in good agreement with other experimental work. However, we report here the first measurements of the ice/ammonium bisulfate/letovicite invariant point. We have used our observations and solubility data to construct a complete phase diagram for this system. Utilizing phase diagram theory and the Gibbs phase rule, we conclude that this system is not a true binary system but rather a pseudobinary system, which has a range of concentrations that cannot be represented by a simple binary phase diagram and thus must be viewed as part of the ternary system: H(2)SO(4)/(NH(4))(2)SO(4)/H(2)O. We also compared our results to the phase diagram predictions of the aerosol inorganics model and found the predicted melting points are in good agreement with experimental work over a limited concentration range, but the transitions predicted by the model at lower temperatures are not in agreement with experimental results.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that there are at least two classes of quasi-two-dimensional solid water into which liquid water confined between hydrophobic surfaces freezes spontaneously and whose hydrogen-bond networks are as fully connected as those of bulk ice. One of them is the monolayer ice and the other is the bilayer solid which takes either a crystalline or an amorphous form. Here we present the phase transformations among liquid, bilayer amorphous (or crystalline) ice, and monolayer ice phases at various thermodynamic conditions, then determine curves of melting, freezing, and solid-solid structural change on the isostress planes where temperature and intersurface distance are variable, and finally we propose a phase diagram of the confined water in the temperature-pressure-distance space.  相似文献

A new series of intermolecular hydrogen-bonded complexes have been synthesized using p-n-alkoxybenzoic acid (alkyl chain length varies from propyl- to decyl- and dodecyl-) and methyl p-hydroxybenzoate moieties. The thermal and phase behaviour of these complexes were studied by thermal microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Further, the stabilization of intermolecular hydrogen bonding in solution was studied by IR spectroscopy. A detailed IR spectral investigation in the solid and dissolved states suggests that the acid and phenol groups act as proton donor and proton acceptor, respectively. The thermal studies also reveal the inducement of a crystal G phase in the complexes.  相似文献

Polarized light passing through a supercooled binary liquid mixture sample is analyzed during the moment of the nucleation of the crystal phase to determine whether the stable equilibrium crystal is nucleated, or whether a transient phase of different composition or broken-symmetry is formed. This experiment is performed for the particular case of heterogeneous nucleation of a supercooled clathrate-forming liquid mixture, tetrahydrofuran (THF)/water, compared with ice nucleating from pure supercooled water. The new experimental results are consistent with the hypothesis that the equilibrium clathrate hydrate crystal is nucleated directly, with no transient phase detected on the time scale of these experiments.  相似文献

The complexation between heptylamine and heptanoic acid has been elucidated at 298.15 K using spectroscopic methods and also by measuring macroscopic quantities such as viscosity, conductivity and surface tension. Fourier transform IR and 13C NMR measurements point towards the existence of a compound consisting of one amine molecule and one acid molecule in an equimolecular mixing ratio. These suggestions are supported by viscosity and surface tension measurements. This compound is further able to interact with excess acid, but similar behaviour is not observed with excess amine. The equimolecular compound behaves like a catanionic surfactant; this is seen in the phase diagram for the heptylamine–heptanoic acid–water system at 298.15 K, where the dominating phase is the lamellar liquid-crystalline phase. This phase is in equilibrium with almost pure water. At low water content a solution phase extending from the binary heptylamine–heptanoic acid axis and covering all mixing ratios between the amine and the acid is also present. In the present study, the solubilizing and amorphizing properties of Valdecoxib (a poorly water soluble anti inflammatory drug) with low molecular weight chitosan (a polymer), have been investigated. Binary systems of varying drug/polymer ratios were prepared using different techniques (physical mixing, co-grinding, kneading) and were tested for dissolution. Drug carrier interactions were investigated in both the liquid and solid state, by phase solubility analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, powder X-ray diffractrometry, FT-IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The solubility of the drug increased with increasing polymer concentration showing A(N) type phase solubility diagram. Differential scanning calorimetry, powder X-ray diffractrometry and scanning electron microscopic studies of binary systems suggested generation of amorphous form of drug (in kneading and co ground mixtures). IR spectroscopy revealed the presence of hydrogen bonding in kneading and co ground mixtures. Drug dissolution was improved with increasing the polymer concentration in the mixture (Kneaded>co ground>physical mixture), which was attributed to the amorphonization and/or decreased drug crystallinity, size and polymer wetting effect. Enhanced dissolution combined with its direct compression feasibility and anti ulcerogenic action results in low molecular weight chitosan for developing fast release oral solid dosage forms of valdecoxib.  相似文献

pH responsive polymeric Janus nanosheets with poly(maleic acid) moiety and crosslinked PS onto the corresponding sides have been synthesized by free radical polymerization. The Janus nanosheets can serve as solid emulsifier to stabilize an oil/water emulsion, whose stability is easily triggered by changing pH across pKa of the poly(maleic acid).  相似文献

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD) have been used to determine the phase behavior of the binary mixtures of undecanoic acid (A) and undecylamine (B) in the bulk. In addition, we report DSC data that indicates very similar behavior for the solid monolayers of these materials adsorbed on the surface of graphite. The two species are found to form a series of stoichiometric complexes of the type AB, A(2)B, and A(3)B on the acid rich side of the phase diagram. Interestingly, no similar series of complexes is evident on the amine rich side. As a result of this complexation, the solid monolayers of the binary mixtures exhibit a very pronounced enhancement in stability relative to the pure adsorbates.  相似文献
