Bamboo fiber (BF) as organic filler is characterized by mechanical properties analysis and morphology examination for polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) matrix blends. Effects of different filler content on tensile strength, flexural properties, and impact strength are proposed. It is observed from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies that addition of BF is beneficial in increasing mechanical strength via increasing the interface dispersed phase. The optimum tensile properties and impact properties of BF content were at 40 wt% for PP/PS/BF composite on melt mixing conditions. The results showed a significant improvement in mechanical properties of PP/PS/BF ternary blend composite. Comparing with untreated BF, content of carbon and nitrogen of treated BF decreased to 66.57 and 2.31%, oxygen content increased to 21.07%, and silicon content increased from 0 to 10.04%. The element ratio of O/C, N/C, and Si/C changed to 31.65, 3.47, and 15.08, respectively.

The mechanical properties and crystal morphological structures of short glass fiber (SGF) reinforced dynamically photo-irradiated polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) composites were studied by mechanical tests, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). The mechanical properties of PP/EPDM composites, especially the tensile strength were greatly strengthened by dynamically photo-irradiation and the incorporation of SGF. The results from the WAXD, SEM, DSC, and TGA measurements reveal: (i) the formation of β-type crystal of PP in the PP/EPDM/SGF composite; (ii) the fiber length in dynamically photo-irradiated PP/EPDM/SGF composites are general longer than that in corresponding unirradiated samples. The size of EPDM phase in the photo-irradiated composites reduces obviously whereas the droplet number increases; (iii) photo-irradiation improves the interface adhesion between SGF and polymer matrix; (iv) the melting and crystallization temperatures of the photo-irradiated composites are not affected greatly by increasing the SGF content; (v) the thermal analysis results show that the incorporation of SGF into PP/EPDM plays an important role for increasing its thermal stability.

This study deals with the silane crosslinking and intumescent flame retardation of polypropylene/ethylene‐propylene‐diene copolymer (PP/EPDM) elastomers. The effect of silane crosslinking on the flame retardancy of the PP/EPDM composites containing melamine phosphate (MP) and dipentaerythritol (DPER) was studied by limiting oxygen index, UL 94 and cone calorimetry tests. The chemical composition of the silane crosslinked and flame retarded PP/EPDM composites treated at different temperatures was studied by X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and real time Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry. Thermal decomposition and crystallization behavior of the PP/EPDM composites were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the composites were also studied. It is found that the flame retardancy, mechanical properties, and thermal decomposition behavior of the composites are influenced by silane grafting and crosslinking. An intumescent flame retardant system composed of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and pentaerythritol (PER) was used for flame retarding ethylene–propylene–diene‐modified elastomer (EPDM)/polypropylene (PP) blends. Cerium phosphate (CeP) was synthesized and the effect on flame retardancy and thermal stability of EPDM/PP composites based on intumescent flame retardant (IFR) were studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94, and thermogravimetic analysis (TGA), respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) were used to analyze the morphological structure and the component of the residue chars formed from the EPDM/PP composites, and the mechanical properties of the materials were also studied. The addition of CeP to the EPDM/PP/APP/PER composites gives better flame retardancy than that of EPDM/PP/APP/PER composites. TGA and RT‐FTIR studies indicated that an interaction occurs among APP, PER, and EPDM/PP. The incorporation of CeP improved the mechanical properties of the materials.

In order to understand the different touch senses from bamboo and cotton fibers, the surface properties of bamboo fiber, e.g., the surface free energy, the Lifshitz–van der Waals force, and Lewis acid and base components have been determined using the column wicking technique. Taking the traditional cotton linter fiber as a reference, this paper shows that both these fibers have the similar surface free energies. However, a big difference between these two fibers which has been importantly observed is that the bamboo fiber having greater Lewis acid component seems to be double than the cotton linter fiber. Since water has been found to have such surface property, it is suggested that the bamboo fiber touch in the skin of people may like the touch between water and skin of people. Meanwhile, other surface properties of these two fibers are compared.

Positron annihilation lifetime measurements were performed on pure polypropylene (PP), ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) rubber, and their blends PP/EPDM with a series of EPDM volume fraction ϕ (= 10–40%). A numerical Laplace inversion technique (i.e., CONTIN algorithm), was employed to obtain the probability distribution functions (PDF) of free-volume radius. We observed that, first, the average free-volume radius in PP/EPDM blends is generally same as that in PP and is much smaller than that in EPDM. Second, the standard deviation σR or the width of the free-volume radius PDF in the blend decreases with ϕ in the region of ϕ = 10ndash;30%, and it increases when ϕ increases from 30% to 40%. The difference in the σR of the blend and the calculated value σc R according to the simple-mixing rule of PP and EPDM is interpreted by the existence of the two-phase interaction (i.e., the residual thermal pressure and shear stress between PP and EPDM phases in the PP/EPDM blends). The correlation between σR, which indicates the interaction of two phases, and the impact strength of PP/EPDM blends was found and discussed.

Polypropylene/ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (PP/EPDM) blends in situ compatibilized by magnesium dimethacrylate (MDMA) were fabricated via peroxide-induced dynamic vulcanization. Scanning electron microscope observation indicated that the size of cross-linked EPDM particles decreased with incorporation of MDMA. Polarizing Optical Microscope (POM) analysis suggested that the spherulite size of PP phase decreased sharply with incorporation of MDMA during dynamic vulcanization. The Pseudo-Avrami, Ozawa and Mo's models were applied to analyze the non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of the composites. The analyzed data indicated that the crosslinked EPDM particles and homopolymerized MDMA acted as heterogeneous nucleating agents, which enhanced the crystallizability and decreased the spherulite size of the PP phase. In addition, the non-isothermal crystallization activation energy (ΔE) was calculated through the Kissinger and Friedman methods, and the ΔE value was found increase with incorporation of MDMA.

In this article, the rheological properties of polypropylene (PP)/ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM)/silicon dioxide (SiO2) ternary composites were systematically investigated. Two kinds of nano-SiO2 particles (with hydrophobic (denoted as A-SiO2) or hydrophilic (denoted as B-SiO2)) as well as two processing methods (one-step or two-step) were first employed to prepare PP/EPDM/SiO2 ternary composites. Then the deep mixing and morphology evolution of polymer composite with mixing time were assessed by rheological method, on the focus of formation of filler-network, and compared with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations. Linear viscoelastic behavior was observed for PP/EPDM and PP/SiO2 binary system, showing no evidence of the formation of filler-network structure. However, a solid-like rheological behavior, which was attributed to the formation of the filler-network structure as confirmed by SEM observation, could be observed in some PP/EPDM/SiO2 ternary systems, depending on the SiO2 surface property, processing method and EPDM content. It seemed that SiO2 with hydrophilic surface was necessary for the formation of filler-network in PP/EPDM/SiO2 ternary system. Besides, two-step processing method made the solid-like behavior occurred at an earlier stage compared with that of a one-step processing method, also, the higher elastomer content facilitated the formation of the filler-network structure. The results were in good agreement with those reported in our previous publications [Yang H, Zhang Q, Guo M, Wang C, Du R, Fu Q. Polymer 2006;47:2106] [Yang H, Zhang X, Qu C, Li B, Zhang L, Zhang Q, et al. Polymer 2007;48:860].

<正>Synergistic effects of layered double hydroxide(LDH) with intumescent flame retardanct(IFR) of phosphorus-nitrogen (NP) compound in the polypropylene/ethylene-propylene-diene/IFR/LDH(PP/EPDM/IFR/LDH) nanocomposites and related properties were studied by X-ray diffraction(XRD),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),limiting oxygen index(LOI),UL-94 test, cone calorimeter test(CCT) and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA).The XRD and TEM results show that the intercalated and/or exfoliated nanocomposites can be obtained by direct melt-intercalation of PP/EPDM into modified LDH and that LDH can promote the IFR additive NP to disperse more homogeneously in the polymer matrix. The SEM results provide positive evidence that more compact charred layers can be obtained from the PP/EPDM/NP/LDH sample than those from the PP/EPDM/LDH and PP/EPDM/NP samples during burning. The LOI and UL-94 rating tests show that the synergetic effects of LDH with NP can effectively increase the flame retardant properties of the PP/EPDM/NP/LDH samples. The data from the CCT and TGA tests indicate that the PP/EPDM/NP/LDH samples apparently decrease the HRR and MLR values and thus enhance the flame retardant properties and have better thermal stability than the PP/EPDM/LDH and PP/EPDM/NP samples.

The effect of shear rates on the transcrystallization of polypropylene (PP) on the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fibers has been quantitatively investigated using a polarized optical microscope equipped with a hot stage and a tensile testing machine. The PTFE fibers were pulled at different rates, from 0.17 to 8.33 μm/s, to induce a range of shear rates, about 0.02 to 1.16 1/s, in the PP melt adjacent to the fiber. The induction time, nucleation rate, and saturated nucleation density at the fiber surface were determined at various crystallization temperatures. It was found that both the nucleation rate and the saturated nucleation density increase with increasing shear rates. However, the induction time is significantly reduced. Based on the theory of heterogeneous nucleation, the interfacial free energy difference functions Δσ;TCL of PP on PTFE fibers at different levels of shear rates were determined and compared with that obtained from crystallization under quiescent conditions. Results showed that the magnitude of ΔσTCL decreased to be about one-third of that for the quiescent crystallization, when a shear rate of 1.16 1/s was applied. The application of a shear stress to the supercooled PP melt by fiber pulling leads to enhance the development of transcrystallinity. Moreover, both the thickness and the crystal growth rate of transcrystalline layers were found to increase with the increasing rate of fiber pulling, especially at low crystallization temperatures where regime III prevails (see text). Surface morphology of PTFE fibers was revealed using a scanning electron microscope and an atomic force microscope. It is argued that the presence of fibrillar-type features at the fiber surface is the main factor responsible for the development of transcrystallinity. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Transcrystallization of polypropylene (PP) on the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fiber was investigated. Both nucleation rate and crystal growth rate were determined by a polarized optical microscope. Based on the theory of heterogeneous nucleation, it has been found that the induction time can correlate well with the nucleation rate in determining the interfacial free energy difference function Δσ. The ratio of Δσ in the bulk matrix to that at the interface is 1.63 which implies the transcrystalline growth is favorable from a thermodynamic point of view. No difference in crystal growth rate of PP has been found in either spherulites or transcrystalline layers. On the basis of regime theory, a transition between regimes II and III was observed at ΔT = 48K. From the morphology studies, it has been found that the thickness of the transcrystalline layer increases with crystallization temperature, from 30 to 120 μm in the temperature range of 110–140°C. The growth of transcrystalline layer is hindered by the spherulites nucleated in the bulk. Moreover, the radius of spherulites adjacent to the transcrystalline layer is much smaller than that distant to the fiber. No significant increase in nucleation density at fiber ends is observed. Effect of internal stresses of fibers on the fiber's nucleating ability is not pronounced.

Physically and dynamically vulcanized (TPV) mixtures of polypropylene (PP) and ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) are prepared by extrusion in order to improve the impact resistance of PP. To enhance the chemical compatibility and provide better interaction between the PP and EPDM in the physical mixtures, both polymers are modified with maleic anhydride (MAH) in solution using xylene as solvent and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as initiator. The qualitative and quantitative determination of the degree of grafting is study by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and varying the amount of DCP and/or amount of MAH in order to determine the optimum amounts to obtain the highest degree of grafting. The effect of the relation of PP/EPDM, the amount of reinforcement filler and mix rate are studied for modified polymer mixtures (PP-g-MAH/EPDM-g-MAH). For the TPV of PP/EPDM the effects of amount and triallylisocyanurate (TAC) as coupling agent in presence of different amounts of DCP are studied. The physical mixtures of modified polymers prepared with a PP/EPDM ratio of 80/20 and the TPVs blends prepared with a PP/EPDM ratio of 70/30 and containing 15% filler at 60 rpm show the highest impact resistance. The impact resistance, melt flow index and hardness of the different mixtures are measured to determine their possible applications to prepare front panels and bumpers for automobiles by injection molding.

In this work, maleic anhydride grafted styrene–ethylene–butadiene–styrene copolymer (SEBS‐g‐MA) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were introduced into the immiscible polypropylene/polystyrene (PP/PS) blend. Among the three polymer components, SEBS‐g‐MA has the strongest affinity to CNTs; thus, it exhibits dual effects to adjust the phase morphology of the blends and the dispersion state of CNTs in the blends. The experimental observations obtained from morphology characterizations using scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope confirm the selective localization of CNTs at the interface of the immiscible PP/PS blend. As a consequence, largely decreased percolation threshold is achieved when most of CNTs are selectively localized at the interface region between PP and PS. In situ polymerized PS/EPDM blends were prepared by dissolving poly(ethylene-co-propylene-co-2-ethylidene-5-norbornene) (EPDM) in styrene monomer, followed by bulk polymerization at 60 °C and 80 °C . EPDM has excellent resistance to such factors as weather, ozone and oxidation, attributed to its non-conjugated diene component, and it could be a good alternative for substituting polybutadiene-based rubbers in PS toughening. The in situ polymerized blends were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, gel permeation chromatography, and tensile and Izod impact resistance tests. The PS/EPDM blends are immiscible and present two phases, a dispersed elastomeric phase (EPDM) in a rigid PS matrix whose phase behavior is strongly affected by the polymerization temperature. Mechanical properties of the blends are influenced by the increase in the average size of EPDM domains with the increase in the polymerization temperature and EPDM content. The blends polymerized at 60 °C containing 5 wt% of EPDM presents an increase in the impact resistance of 80% and containing 17 wt% of EPDM presents an increase in the strain at break of 170% in comparison with the value of PS. The blend polymerized at 80 °C containing 17 wt% of EPDM presents an increase in the strain at break of 480% and in impact resistance of 140% in comparison with the value of PS.

The effects of surface treatment of a carbon fiber (CF) by supersonic atmosphere plasma spraying (SAPS) on the interfacial adhesion behavior and morphology of polypropylene/polystyrene (PP/PS) matrix blends filled CF composites were investigated. Effects of surface treated a commercial CF on mechanical properties are studied. Contact angle was measured to examine the changes in wettability of the CF. The chemical and morphological changes were characterized by using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. PP/PS/CF composites were fabricated with and without SAPS treatment, and their interlaminar fracture toughnesses were compared. The results showed that the interlaminar shear strength of composites has been greatly improved filled SAPS modification CF. The water contact angle of resin sample decreased 50% after addition of SAPS surface‐treated CF. Scanning electron microscopy results on the fractured surface exhibited PP/PS blends adhered well around the CFs of the SAPS‐treated specimen compared with that of the untreated specimen. This attributed to the CF interlock, and it improves the wetting between fibers and resins. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Rubber blend of acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber (50/50) has been loaded with increasing contents, up to 100 phr, of reinforcing filler, namely, high abrasion furnace (HAF) carbon black. Prepared composites have been subjected to gamma radiation doses up to 250 kGy to induce radiation vulcanization under atmospheric conditions. Mechanical properties, namely, tensile strength (TS), tensile modulus at 100% elongation (M100), and hardness have been followed up as a function of irradiation dose and degree of loading with filler. On the other hand, variation of the swelling number as a physical property, as a function of same parameters, however, in car oil as well as brake oil has been undertaken. In addition, the electrical properties of prepared composites, namely, their electrical conductivity, were also evaluated. The thermal behavior of the prepared composites was also investigated. The results obtained indicate that improvement has been attained in different properties of loaded NBR/EPDM composites with respect to unloaded ones.

Present work is devoted to the changes produced in the interfacial interactions caused by an interfacial agent consisting in succinil-fluoresceine grafted atactic polypropylene acting into a polypropylene/talc composite as revealed by dynamic-mechanical spectrometry. The interfacial agents used here were previously obtained in our laboratories by means of a two step process of chemical modification in the melt of a by-product (atactic polypropylene) from industrial polymerization reactors, and consist in four different additives with 1-4% w/w of grafting degree expressed as succinic equivalent. In this way, the variations of interfacial activity caused by replacing a little amount of polypropylene matrix in the composite by the succinil-fluoresceine grafted atactic polypropylene can be clearly detected. Furthermore, a correlation between parameters from the microscopical scale such as the obtained by DMA and other from the macroscopic such as mechanical properties appears to emerge.
