The effect of local thermal non-equilibrium on the onset of convection in a porous medium consisting of two horizontal layers, each internally heated, is studied analytically. Linear stability theory is applied. Variations of permeability, fluid thermal conductivity, solid thermal conductivity, source strength in the solid and fluid phases, interphase heat-transfer coefficient and porosity are considered. It is found that heterogeneity of permeability, fluid thermal conductivity and source strength in the fluid phase have a major effect; heterogeneity of interphase heat-transfer coefficient and porosity have a lesser effect, while heterogeneity of solid thermal conductivity and source strength in the solid phase are relatively unimportant.  相似文献

In this article, free convection heat transfer over a vertical cylinder with variable surface temperature distributions in a porous medium is analyzed. It is assumed that the fluid and solid phases are not in local thermal equilibrium and, therefore, a two-temperature model of heat transfer is applied. The coupled momentum and energy equations are presented and then they are transformed into ordinary differential equations. The similarity equations are solved numerically. The resulting velocity, streamlines, temperature distributions for fluid and solid phases are shown for different values of parameters entering into the problem. The calculated values of the local Nusselt numbers for both solid and fluid phases are also shown.  相似文献

A regular perturbation analysis is presented for the following laminar natural convection flows of Newtonian fluids with temperature-dependent effective viscosity: a freely-rising plane plume, the flow above a horizontal line source on an adiabatic surface (a plane wall plume) and the flow adjacent to a vertical uniform flux surface for porous medium. The temperature-dependent effective viscosity introduces nonsimilarity into the governing equations. Numerical results are presented for the flow and heat transfer characteristics.  相似文献

The combined effects of vertical heterogeneity of permeability and local thermal non-equilibrium (LTNE) on the onset of ferromagnetic convection in a ferrofluid saturated Darcy porous medium in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field are investigated. A two-field model for temperature representing the solid and fluid phases separately is used. The eigenvalue problem is solved numerically using the Galerkin method for different forms of permeability heterogeneity function Γ(z) and their effect on the stability characteristics of the system has been analyzed in detail. It is observed that the general quadratic variation of Γ(z) with depth has more destabilizing effect on the system when compared to the homogeneous porous medium case. Besides, the influence of LTNE and magnetic parameters on the criterion for the onset of ferromagnetic convection is also assessed.  相似文献

The onset of convection in a horizontal layer of a porous medium saturated by a nanofluid is analytically studied. The model used for the nanofluid incorporates the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis. For the porous medium, the Darcy model is employed. The effect of local thermal non-equilibrium among the particle, fluid, and solid-matrix phases is investigated using a three-temperature model. The analysis reveals that in some circumstances the effect of LTNE can be significant, but for a typical dilute nanofluid (with large Lewis number and with small particle-to-fluid heat capacity ratio) the effect is small.  相似文献

The problem of unsteady free convection heat transfer from a one-dimensional (parallel) flow along an infinite vertical flat plate embedded in a thermally stratified fluid-saturated porous medium is considered. Flows are induced by a sudden change in the arbitrary temporal plate temperature. By a formal reduction of the corresponding boundary value problems to well-known Fourier heat conduction problems, analytical solutions of the Darcy and energy equations are obtained. Several special cases are discussed in detail.  相似文献

The problem of melting from a vertical flat plate embedded in a porous medium is studied. The main focus is to determine the effect of mixed convection flow in the liquid phase on the melting phenomenon. Both aiding and opposing flows are considered. The conservation equations that govern the problem are reduced to a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The governing equations are solved numerically. Numerical results are obtained for the temperature and flow fields in the melting region. The melting phenomenon decreases the local Nusselt number at the solid–liquid interface.  相似文献

This article considers the problem of mixed convection stagnation-point flow towards a vertical plate embedded in a porous medium with prescribed surface heat flux. It is assumed that the free stream velocity and the surface heat flux vary linearly from the stagnation point. Using a similarity transformation, the governing system of partial differential equations is transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations, before being solved numerically by a finite-difference method. The features of the flow and the heat transfer characteristics are analyzed and discussed. It is found that dual solutions exist for both buoyancy assisting and opposing flows.  相似文献

The mixed convection caused when a horizontal circular cylinder is suddenly heated is investigated in the situation when the initial flow past the cylinder is uniform and its direction either upwards or downwards. An analytical series solution, which is valid at small times, is obtained using the matched asymptotic expansions technique. A numerical solution, which is valid at all times and for any values of the Rayleigh and Péclet numbers, is also obtained using a fully implicit finite-difference method. Three different regimes, when either the free or forced convection is dominant or when they have the same order of magnitude, are considered. In the free convection dominated regime, two vortices develop near the sides of the cylinder in both situations of an upward or downward external flow. Comparisons between the analytical and numerical results at small times, as well as a detailed discussion of the evolution of the numerical solution are presented. The numerical results obtained for large Rayleigh, Ra, and Péclet Pe, numbers show that a thermal boundary-layer forms adjacent to the cylinder for any value of the ratio Ra/e. The steady state boundary-layer analysis, similar to that performed by Cheng and Merkin, is analysed in comparison to the numerical solution obtained for large values of Ra and Pe at very large times.  相似文献

In the present work, the effect of mixed convection about vertical surfaces on the phenomenon of melting process in a fluid-saturated porous medium is analyzed on the basis of boundary layer approximations. Similarity solutions are obtained for aiding external flow. The final similarity equations are integrated numerically by use of the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method. Results are reported for the flow and thermal fields in the melt region. The melting phenomenon decreases the local Nusselt number at the solid–liquid interface.  相似文献

The method of non-similarity solution is used to study the influence of thermal dispersion on combined convection from vertical surfaces in a porous medium saturated with a power-law type non-Newtonian fluid. The coefficient of thermal diffusivity has been assumed to be the sum of molecular diffusivity and the dispersion thermal diffusivity due to mechanical dispersion. The transformed conservation laws are solved numerically for the case of variable surface heat flux conditions. Results for the details of the velocity and temperature fields as well as the Nusselt number have been presented.  相似文献

Differentially heated enclosure with heat-generating porous layer on inner walls is studied computationally for non-Darcy flow and thermal non-equilibrium models. In this study, this problem is investigated for different internal and external Rayleigh numbers, Darcy numbers, porosity-scaled thermal conductivity ratio, solid-/fluid-scaled heat transfer coefficient and dimensionless thickness of the porous layer. The results indicate that the dimensionless thickness of the porous layer has an important effect on the heat transfer in the enclosure. It was found that the thermal non-equilibrium model is needed for small values of the porosity-scaled thermal conductivity ratio and the solid-/fluid-scaled heat transfer coefficient. It is shown that the convection of heat due to internal heat generation is increased in the enclosure when the ratio of internal Rayleigh number to external Rayleigh number is larger.  相似文献

The paper presents an investigation of the influence of thermal radiation and viscous dissipation on the mixed convective flow due to a vertical plate immersed in a non-Darcy porous medium saturated with a Newtonian fluid. The physical properties of the fluid are assumed to be constant. The Rosseland approximation is used to describe the radiative heat flux in the energy equation. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations and solved numerically using a shooting method. The results are analyzed for the effects of various physical parameters such as viscous dissipation, thermal radiation, mixed convection parameters, and the modified Reynolds number on dynamics. The heat transfer coefficient is also tabulated for different values of the physical parameters.  相似文献

The steady laminar incompressible free convective flow of a nanofluid over a permeable upward facing horizontal plate located in porous medium taking into account the thermal convective boundary condition is studied numerically. The nanofluid model used involves the effect of Brownian motion and the thermophoresis. Using similarity transformations the continuity, the momentum, the energy, and the nanoparticle volume fraction equations are transformed into a set of coupled similarity equations, before being solved numerically, by an implicit finite difference numerical method. Our analysis reveals that for a true similarity solution, the convective heat transfer coefficient related with the hot fluid and the mass transfer velocity must be proportional to x −2/3, where x is the horizontal distance along the plate from the origin. Effects of the various parameters on the dimensionless longitudinal velocity, the temperature, the nanoparticle volume fraction, as well as on the rate of heat transfer and the rate of nanoparticle volume fraction have been presented graphically and discussed. It is found that Lewis number, the Brownian motion, and the convective heat transfer parameters increase the heat transfer rate whilst the thermophoresis decreases the heat transfer rate. It is also found that Lewis number and the convective heat transfer parameter enhance the nanoparticle volume fraction rate whilst the thermophoresis parameter decreases nanoparticle volume fraction rate. A very good agreement is found between numerical results of the present article for special case and published results. This close agreement supports the validity of our analysis and the accuracy of the numerical computations.  相似文献

A steady laminar boundary layer flowing along a vertical plate immersed in a Darcy–Brinkman porous medium saturated with water at 4°C is studied. The plate temperature varies sinusoidally along the plate between 0 and 8°C where the density of water varies parabolically and is almost symmetrical at about 4°C. Except for the existence of the buoyancy force, it is assumed that either the plate moves upwards or the ambient water moves upwards (moving stream). The results are obtained with the direct numerical solution of the boundary layer equations taking into account the temperature dependence of water thermophysical properties (ρ, μ and c p). Results are presented for the wall temperature gradient and the wall shear stress along the plate for free convection and mixed convection. Temperature and velocity profiles are also presented.  相似文献

The steady mixed convection boundary-layer flow on a vertical circular cylinder embedded in a porous medium filled by a nanofluid is studied for both cases of a heated and a cooled cylinder. The governing system of partial differential equations is reduced to ordinary differential equations by assuming that the surface temperature of the cylinder and the velocity of the external (inviscid) flow vary linearly with the axial distance x measured from the leading edge. Solutions of the resulting ordinary differential equations for the flow and heat transfer characteristics are evaluated numerically for various values of the governing parameters, namely the nanoparticle volume fraction ${\phi}$ , the mixed convection or buoyancy parameter ?? and the curvature parameter ??. Results are presented for the specific case of copper nanoparticles. A critical value ?? c of ?? with ?? c <?0 is found, with the values of | ?? c| increasing as the curvature parameter ?? or nanoparticle volume fraction ${\phi}$ is increased. Dual solutions are seen for all values of ?? >??? c for both aiding, ?? >?0 and opposing, ?? <?0, flows. Asymptotic solutions are also determined for both the free convection limit ${(\lambda \gg 1)}$ and for large curvature parameter ${(\gamma \gg 1)}$ .  相似文献

Numerical analysis is performed to examine laminar free convective of a nanofluid along a vertical wavy surface saturated porous medium. In this pioneering study, we have considered the simplest possible boundary conditions, namely those in which both the temperature and the nanoparticle fraction are constant along the wall. Non-similar transformations are presented for the governing equations and the obtained PDE are then solved numerically employing a fourth order Runge–Kutta method with shooting technique. A detailed parametric study (nanofluid parameters) is performed to access the influence of the various physical parameters on the local Nusselt number and the local Sherwood number. The results of the problem are presented in graphical forms and discussed.  相似文献

Buoyant flow in a fluid-saturated porous vertical slab with isothermal and permeable boundaries is performed. Two reservoirs, maintained at different uniform temperatures, confine the slab. The permeable plane boundaries of the slab are modelled by imposing a condition of hydrostatic pressure. Darcy’s law and the Oberbeck–Boussinesq approximation are employed. The hypothesis of local thermal equilibrium between the fluid and the solid phase is relaxed. A two-temperature model is adopted, so that two local energy balance equations govern the heat transfer in the porous slab. The basic stationary buoyant flow consists of a single convective cell of infinite height. The time evolution of normal mode perturbations superposed onto the basic state is investigated in order to determine the onset conditions for thermal instability. A pressure–temperature formulation is employed. Major asymptotic cases are investigated. It is shown that departure from local thermal equilibrium implies in general a destabilisation of the basic stationary flow.  相似文献
