This paper proposes nonlinear Lagrangians based on modified Fischer-Burmeister NCP functions for solving nonlinear programming problems with inequality constraints. The convergence theorem shows that the sequence of points generated by this nonlinear Lagrange algorithm is locally convergent when the penalty parameter is less than a threshold under a set of suitable conditions on problem functions, and the error bound of solution, depending on the penalty parameter, is also established. It is shown that the condition number of the nonlinear Lagrangian Hessian at the optimal solution is proportional to the controlling penalty parameter. Moreover, the paper develops the dual algorithm associated with the proposed nonlinear Lagrangians. Numerical results reported suggest that the dual algorithm based on proposed nonlinear Lagrangians is effective for solving some nonlinear optimization problems.  相似文献

Augmented Lagrangian function is one of the most important tools used in solving some constrained optimization problems. In this article, we study an augmented Lagrangian objective penalty function and a modified augmented Lagrangian objective penalty function for inequality constrained optimization problems. First, we prove the dual properties of the augmented Lagrangian objective penalty function, which are at least as good as the traditional Lagrangian function's. Under some conditions, the saddle point of the augmented Lagrangian objective penalty function satisfies the first-order Karush-Kuhn-Tucker condition. This is especially so when the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker condition holds for convex programming of its saddle point existence. Second, we prove the dual properties of the modified augmented Lagrangian objective penalty function. For a global optimal solution, when the exactness of the modified augmented Lagrangian objective penalty function holds, its saddle point exists. The sufficient and necessary stability conditions used to determine whether the modified augmented Lagrangian objective penalty function is exact for a global solution is proved. Based on the modified augmented Lagrangian objective penalty function, an algorithm is developed to find a global solution to an inequality constrained optimization problem, and its global convergence is also proved under some conditions. Furthermore, the sufficient and necessary calmness condition on the exactness of the modified augmented Lagrangian objective penalty function is proved for a local solution. An algorithm is presented in finding a local solution, with its convergence proved under some conditions.  相似文献

Recursive quadratic programming is a family of techniques developd by Bartholomew-Biggs and other authors for solving nonlinear programming problems. This paperdescribes a new method for constrained optimization which obtains its search di-rections from a quadratic programming subproblem based on the well-known aug-mented Lagrangian function. It avoids the penalty parameter to tend to infinity. We employ the Fletcher‘s exact penalty function as a merit function and the use of an approximate directional derivative of the function that avoids the need toevaluate the second order derivatives of the problem functions. We prove that thealgorithm possesses global and superlinear convergence properties. At the sametime, numerical results are reported.  相似文献

In this paper we extend the theory of exact penalty functions for nonlinear programs whose objective functions and equality and inequality constraints are locally Lipschitz; arbitrary simple constraints are also allowed. Assuming a weak stability condition, we show that for all sufficiently large penalty parameter values an isolated local minimum of the nonlinear program is also an isolated local minimum of the exact penalty function. A tight lower bound on the parameter value is provided when certain first order sufficiency conditions are satisfied. We apply these results to unify and extend some results for convex programming. Since several effective algorithms for solving nonlinear programs with differentiable functions rely on exact penalty functions, our results provide a framework for extending these algorithms to problems with locally Lipschitz functions.  相似文献

We consider the global and local convergence properties of a class of Lagrangian barrier methods for solving nonlinear programming problems. In such methods, simple bound constraints may be treated separately from more general constraints. The objective and general constraint functions are combined in a Lagrangian barrier function. A sequence of such functions are approximately minimized within the domain defined by the simple bounds. Global convergence of the sequence of generated iterates to a first-order stationary point for the original problem is established. Furthermore, possible numerical difficulties associated with barrier function methods are avoided as it is shown that a potentially troublesome penalty parameter is bounded away from zero. This paper is a companion to previous work of ours on augmented Lagrangian methods.

A novel nonlinear Lagrangian is presented for constrained optimization problems with both inequality and equality constraints, which is nonlinear with respect to both functions in problem and Lagrange multipliers. The nonlinear Lagrangian inherits the smoothness of the objective and constraint functions and has positive properties. The algorithm on the nonlinear Lagrangian is demonstrated to possess local and linear convergence when the penalty parameter is less than a threshold (the penalty parameter in the penalty method has to approximate zero) under a set of suitable conditions, and be super-linearly convergent when the penalty parameter is decreased following Lagrange multiplier update. Furthermore, the dual problem based on the nonlinear Lagrangian is discussed and some important properties are proposed, which fail to hold for the dual problem based on the classical Lagrangian. At last, the preliminary and comparing numerical results for several typical test problems by using the new nonlinear Lagrangian algorithm and the other two related nonlinear Lagrangian algorithms, are reported, which show that the given nonlinear Lagrangian is promising.  相似文献

Modified barrier functions (theory and methods)   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
The nonlinear rescaling principle employs monotone and sufficiently smooth functions to transform the constraints and/or the objective function into an equivalent problem, the classical Lagrangian which has important properties on the primal and the dual spaces. The application of the nonlinear rescaling principle to constrained optimization problems leads to a class of modified barrier functions (MBF's) and MBF Methods (MBFM's). Being classical Lagrangians (CL's) for an equivalent problem, the MBF's combine the best properties of the CL's and classical barrier functions (CBF's) but at the same time are free of their most essential deficiencies.Due to the excellent MBF properties, new characteristics of the dual pair convex programming problems have been found and the duality theory for nonconvex constrained optimization has been developed. The MBFM have up to a superlinear rate of convergence and are to the classical barrier functions (CBF's) method as the Multipliers Method for Augmented Lagrangians is to the Classical Penalty Function Method. Based on the dual theory associated with MBF, the method for the simultaneous solution of the dual pair convex programming problems with up to quadratic rates of convergence have been developed. The application of the MBF to linear (LP) and quadratic (QP) programming leads to a new type of multipliers methods which have a much better rate of convergence under lower computational complexity at each step as compared to the CBF methods. The numerical realization of the MBFM leads to the Newton Modified Barrier Method (NMBM). The excellent MBF properties allow us to discover that for any nondegenerate constrained optimization problem, there exists a hot start, from which the NMBM has a better rate of convergence, a better complexity bound, and is more stable than the interior point methods, which are based on the classical barrier functions.  相似文献

In this two-part study, we develop a unified approach to the analysis of the global exactness of various penalty and augmented Lagrangian functions for constrained optimization problems in finite-dimensional spaces. This approach allows one to verify in a simple and straightforward manner whether a given penalty/augmented Lagrangian function is exact, i.e., whether the problem of unconstrained minimization of this function is equivalent (in some sense) to the original constrained problem, provided the penalty parameter is sufficiently large. Our approach is based on the so-called localization principle that reduces the study of global exactness to a local analysis of a chosen merit function near globally optimal solutions. In turn, such local analysis can be performed with the use of optimality conditions and constraint qualifications. In the first paper, we introduce the concept of global parametric exactness and derive the localization principle in the parametric form. With the use of this version of the localization principle, we recover existing simple, necessary, and sufficient conditions for the global exactness of linear penalty functions and for the existence of augmented Lagrange multipliers of Rockafellar–Wets’ augmented Lagrangian. We also present completely new necessary and sufficient conditions for the global exactness of general nonlinear penalty functions and for the global exactness of a continuously differentiable penalty function for nonlinear second-order cone programming problems. We briefly discuss how one can construct a continuously differentiable exact penalty function for nonlinear semidefinite programming problems as well.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a recursive quadratic programming algorithm for nonlinear programming problems with inequality constraints that uses as merit function a differentiable exact penalty function. The algorithm incorporates an automatic adjustment rule for the selection of the penalty parameter and makes use of an Armijo-type line search procedure that avoids the need to evaluate second order derivatives of the problem functions. We prove that the algorithm possesses global and superlinear convergence properties. Numerical results are reported.  相似文献

In this paper, we study augmented Lagrangian functions for nonlinear semidefinite programming (NSDP) problems with exactness properties. The term exact is used in the sense that the penalty parameter can be taken appropriately, so a single minimization of the augmented Lagrangian recovers a solution of the original problem. This leads to reformulations of NSDP problems into unconstrained nonlinear programming ones. Here, we first establish a unified framework for constructing these exact functions, generalizing Di Pillo and Lucidi’s work from 1996, that was aimed at solving nonlinear programming problems. Then, through our framework, we propose a practical augmented Lagrangian function for NSDP, proving that it is continuously differentiable and exact under the so-called nondegeneracy condition. We also present some preliminary numerical experiments.  相似文献

Bounds on convergence are given for a general class of nonlinear programming algorithms. Methods in this class generate at each interation both constraint multipliers and approximate solutions such that, under certain specified assumptions, accumulation points of the multiplier and solution sequences satisfy the Fritz John or the Kuhn—Tucker optimality conditions. Under stronger assumptions, convergence bounds are derived for the sequences of approximate solution, multiplier and objective function values. The theory is applied to an interior—exterior penalty function algorithm modified to allow for inexact subproblem solutions. An entirely new convergence bound in terms of the square root of the penalty controlling parameter is given for this algorithm.  相似文献

This paper aims at showing that the class of augmented Lagrangian functions for nonlinear semidefinite programming problems can be derived, as a particular case, from a nonlinear separation scheme in the image space associated with the given problem. By means of the image space analysis, a global saddle point condition for the augmented Lagrangian function is investigated. It is shown that the existence of a saddle point is equivalent to a regular nonlinear separation of two suitable subsets of the image space. Without requiring the strict complementarity, it is proved that, under second order sufficiency conditions, the augmented Lagrangian function admits a local saddle point. The existence of global saddle points is then obtained under additional assumptions that do not require the compactness of the feasible set. Motivated by the result on global saddle points, we propose two modified primal-dual methods based on the augmented Lagrangian using different strategies and prove their convergence to a global solution and the optimal value of the original problem without requiring the boundedness condition of the multiplier sequence.  相似文献

In the second part of our study, we introduce the concept of global extended exactness of penalty and augmented Lagrangian functions, and derive the localization principle in the extended form. The main idea behind the extended exactness consists in an extension of the original constrained optimization problem by adding some extra variables, and then construction of a penalty/augmented Lagrangian function for the extended problem. This approach allows one to design extended penalty/augmented Lagrangian functions having some useful properties (such as smoothness), which their counterparts for the original problem might not possess. In turn, the global exactness of such extended merit functions can be easily proved with the use of the localization principle presented in this paper, which reduces the study of global exactness to a local analysis of a merit function based on sufficient optimality conditions and constraint qualifications. We utilize the localization principle in order to obtain simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the global exactness of the extended penalty function introduced by Huyer and Neumaier, and in order to construct a globally exact continuously differentiable augmented Lagrangian function for nonlinear semidefinite programming problems.  相似文献

We study the properties of the augmented Lagrangian function for nonlinear semidefinite programming. It is shown that, under a set of sufficient conditions, the augmented Lagrangian algorithm is locally convergent when the penalty parameter is larger than a certain threshold. We present a class of new augmented Lagrangian functions with the essential property that each member is concave quadratic when viewed as a function of the multiplier. This leads to an improved duality theory and to a related class of exact penalty functions. In addition, a relationship between Newton steps for the classical Lagrangian and the new Lagrangians is established. This work was supported in part by ARO Grant No. DAAG29-77-G-0125.  相似文献

We consider an inverse quadratic programming (QP) problem in which the parameters in the objective function of a given QP problem are adjusted as little as possible so that a known feasible solution becomes the optimal one. We formulate this problem as a minimization problem with a positive semidefinite cone constraint and its dual is a linearly constrained semismoothly differentiable (SC1) convex programming problem with fewer variables than the original one. We demonstrate the global convergence of the augmented Lagrangian method for the dual problem and prove that the convergence rate of primal iterates, generated by the augmented Lagrange method, is proportional to 1/r, and the rate of multiplier iterates is proportional to  $1/\sqrt{r}$ , where r is the penalty parameter in the augmented Lagrangian. As the objective function of the dual problem is a SC1 function involving the projection operator onto the cone of symmetrically semi-definite matrices, the analysis requires extensive tools such as the singular value decomposition of matrices, an implicit function theorem for semismooth functions, and properties of the projection operator in the symmetric-matrix space. Furthermore, the semismooth Newton method with Armijo line search is applied to solve the subproblems in the augmented Lagrange approach, which is proven to have global convergence and local quadratic rate. Finally numerical results, implemented by the augmented Lagrangian method, are reported.  相似文献

For nonlinear programming problems, we propose a new class of smooth exact penalty functions, which includes both barrier-type and exterior-type penalty functions as special cases. We develop necessary and sufficient conditions for exact penalty property and inverse proposition of exact penalization, respectively. Furthermore, we establish the equivalent relationship between these penalty functions and classical simple exact penalty functions in the sense of exactness property. In addition, a feasible penalty function algorithm is proposed. The convergence analysis of the algorithm is presented, including the global convergence property and finite termination property. Finally, numerical results are reported.  相似文献

In this paper, we develop the sufficient conditions for the existence of local and global saddle points of two classes of augmented Lagrangian functions for nonconvex optimization problem with both equality and inequality constraints, which improve the corresponding results in available papers. The main feature of our sufficient condition for the existence of global saddle points is that we do not need the uniqueness of the optimal solution. Furthermore, we show that the existence of global saddle points is a necessary and sufficient condition for the exact penalty representation in the framework of augmented Lagrangians. Based on these, we convert a class of generalized semi-infinite programming problems into standard semi-infinite programming problems via augmented Lagrangians. Some new first-order optimality conditions are also discussed. This research was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of P.R. China (Grant No. 10571106 and No. 10701047).  相似文献
