Stable self-homotopy equivalences

In this paper we develop a new method for the study of structural properties of the group stable self-homotopy equivalences. Using this new approach we give more efficient proofs for some classical theorems, together with a series of new results.     

Nilpotent subgroups of self equivalences of torsion spaces

LetX be a finitep-torsion based connected nilpotent CW-complex. We give a criterion of a subgroup of ε(X), the group of self equivalences ofX, to be a nilpotent group, in terms of its action onE _*(X), whereE is a CW-spectrum, satisfying some technical conditions.     

Every finite group is the group of self-homotopy equivalences of an elliptic space

We prove that every finite group G can be realized as the group of self-homotopy equivalences of infinitely many elliptic spaces X. To construct those spaces we introduce a new technique which leads, for example, to the existence of infinitely many inflexible manifolds. Further applications to representation theory will appear in a separate paper.     

On the group of homotopy equivalences of a manifold

We consider the group of homotopy equivalences of a simply connected manifold which is part of the fundamental extension of groups due to Barcus-Barratt. We show that the kernel of this extension is always a finite group and we compute this kernel for various examples. This leads to computations of the group for special manifolds , for example if is a connected sum of products of spheres. In particular the group is determined completely. Also the connection of with the group of isotopy classes of diffeomorphisms of is studied.

     

Nilpotent elements in group rings

The main theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the rational group algebra QG to be without (nonzero) nilpotent elements if G is a nilpotent or F·C group. For finite groups G, a characterisation of group rings RG over a commutative ring with the same property is given. As an application those nilpotent or F·C groups are characterised which have the group of units U(KG) solvable for certain fields K.This work has been supported by N.R.C. Grant No. A-5300.     

Maximal subgroups of the orthogonal group

Let V be an n-dimensional regular quadratic space over a field K of characteristic not 2. Assume n 4. Let W be a regular hyperplane and v a nonzero vector orthogonal to W. Suppose every regular hyperplane in W is universal. If is an isometry of V not leaving W invariant, then , together with the isometries of W, generate the orthogonal group of V, with one exception.The work of the author was partially supported by NSERC Grant A-7862.
