Sunlight-driven CO2 reduction to renewable fuels is a promising strategy towards a closed carbon cycle in a circular economy. For that purpose, colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as a versatile light absorber platform that offers many possibilities for surface modification strategies. Considerable attention has been focused on tailoring the local chemical environment of the catalytic site for CO2 reduction with chemical functionalities ranging from amino acids to amines, imidazolium, pyridines, and others. Here we show that dithiols, a class of organic compounds previously unexplored in the context of CO2 reduction, can enhance photocatalytic CO2 reduction on ZnSe QDs. A short dithiol (1,2-ethanedithiol) activates the QD surface for CO2 reduction accompanied by a suppression of the competing H2 evolution reaction. In contrast, in the presence of an immobilized Ni(cyclam) co-catalyst, a longer dithiol (1,6-hexanedithiol) accelerates CO2 reduction. 1H-NMR spectroscopy studies of the dithiol-QD surface interactions reveal a strong affinity of the dithiols for the QD surface accompanied by a solvation sphere governed by hydrophobic interactions. Control experiments with a series of dithiol analogues (monothiol, mercaptoalcohol) render the hydrophobic chemical environment unlikely as the sole contribution of the enhancement of CO2 reduction. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide a framework to rationalize the observed dithiol length dependent activity through the analysis of the non-covalent interactions between the dangling thiol moiety and the CO2 reduction intermediates at the catalytic site. This work therefore introduces dithiol capping ligands as a straightforward means to enhance CO2 reduction catalysis on both bare and co-catalyst modified QDs by engineering the particle''s chemical environment.

ZnSe quantum dots (yellow sphere) are modified with dithiols of various lengths for enhanced visible light-driven CO2 to CO reduction in either the absence or presence of a molecular Ni co-catalyst.  相似文献

Supramolecular photocatalysts comprising [Ru(diimine)3]2+ photosensitiser and fac-[Re(diimine)(CO)3{OC(O)OC2H4NR2}] catalyst units can be used to reduce CO2 to CO with high selectivity, durability and efficiency. In the presence of triethanolamine, the Re catalyst unit efficiently takes up CO2 to form a carbonate ester complex, and then direct photocatalytic reduction of a low concentration of CO2, e.g., 10% CO2, can be achieved using this type of supramolecular photocatalyst. In this work, the mechanism of the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 was investigated applying such a supramolecular photocatalyst, RuC2Re with a carbonate ester ligand, using time-resolved visible and infrared spectroscopies and electrochemical methods. Using time-resolved spectroscopic measurements, the kinetics of the photochemical formation processes of the one-electron-reduced species RuC2(Re)−, which is an essential intermediate in the photocatalytic reaction, were clarified in detail and its electronic structure was elucidated. These studies also showed that RuC2(Re)− is stable for 10 ms in the reaction solution. Cyclic voltammograms measured at various scan rates besides temperature and kinetic analyses of RuC2(Re)− produced by steady-state irradiation indicated that the subsequent reaction of RuC2(Re)− proceeds with an observed first-order rate constant of approximately 1.8 s−1 at 298 K and is a unimolecular reaction, independent of the concentrations of both CO2 and RuC2(Re)−.

Formation processes and reactivity of an important intermediate of photocatalytic CO2 reduction, one-electron reduced species of a Ru(ii)–Re(i) supramolecular photocatalyst with a carbonate ester ligand, were investigated in detail.  相似文献

The development of systems for photocatalytic CO2 reduction with water as a reductant and solar light as an energy source is one of the most important milestones on the way to artificial photosynthesis. Although such reduction can be performed using dye-sensitized molecular photocathodes comprising metal complexes as redox photosensitizers and catalyst units fixed on a p-type semiconductor electrode, the performance of the corresponding photoelectrochemical cells remains low, e.g., their highest incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) equals 1.2%. Herein, we report a novel dye-sensitized molecular photocathode for photocatalytic CO2 reduction in water featuring a polypyrrole layer, [Ru(diimine)3]2+ as a redox photosensitizer unit, and Ru(diimine)(CO)2Cl2 as the catalyst unit and reveal that the incorporation of the polypyrrole network significantly improves reactivity and durability relative to those of previously reported dye-sensitized molecular photocathodes. The irradiation of the novel photocathode with visible light under low applied bias stably induces the photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO and HCOOH with high faradaic efficiency and selectivity (even in aqueous solution), and the highest IPCE is determined as 4.7%. The novel photocathode is coupled with n-type semiconductor photoanodes (CoOx/BiVO4 and RhOx/TaON) to construct full cells that photocatalytically reduce CO2 using water as the reductant upon visible light irradiation as the only energy input at zero bias. The artificial Z-scheme photoelectrochemical cell with the dye-sensitized molecular photocathode achieves the highest energy conversion efficiency of 8.3 × 10−2% under the irradiation of both electrodes with visible light, while a solar to chemical conversion efficiency of 4.2 × 10−2% is achieved for a tandem-type cell using a solar light simulator (AM 1.5, 100 mW cm−2).

A novel dye-sensitized molecular photocathode with polypyrrole networks exhibits high efficiency and durability for photocatalytic CO2 reduction by using water as reductant and visible light as energy.  相似文献

Fabrication of well-designed heterojunctions is an extraordinarily attractive pathway for boosting the photocatalytic activity toward CO_2 photoreduction.Herein,a novel kind of na nosheet-based intercalation hybrid coupled with CdSe quantum dots(QDs) was successfully fabricated by a facile solvothermal method and served as photocatalyst for full-spectrum-light-driven CO_2 reduction.Ultra-small CdSe QDs were rationally in-situ introduced and coupled with lamellar ZnSe-intercalation hybrid nanosheet, resulting in the formation of CdSe Q.Ds/ZnSe hybrid heterojunction.Significantly, the concentration of Cd~(2+) could change directly the crystallinity and micromorphology of ZnSe intercalation hybrid, which in turn would impact on the photocatalysis activity. The optimized CdSe QDs/ZnSe hybrid-5 composite demonstrated a considerable CO yield rate of the 25.6 μmol g~(-1) h~(-1) without any additional cocatalysts or sacrificial agents assisting, making it one of the best reported performance toward CO_2 photoreduction under full-spectrum light. The elevated CO_2 photoreduction activity could be attributed to the special surface heterojunction, leading to improving the ability of light absorption and promoting the separation/transfer of photogenerated carriers. This present study developed a new strategy for designing inorganic-organic heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalyst for CO_2 photoreduction and provided an available way to simultaneously mitigate the greenhouse effect and alleviate energy shortage pressure.  相似文献

The visible-light-driven photoreduction of CO2 to value-added chemicals over metal-free photocatalysts without sacrificial reagents is very interesting, but challenging. Herein, we present amide-bridged conjugated organic polymers (amide-COPs) prepared via self-condensation of amino nitriles in combination with hydrolysis, for the photoreduction of CO2 with H2O without any photosensitizers or sacrificial reagents under visible light irradiation. These catalysts can afford CO as the sole carbonaceous product without H2 generation. Especially, amide-DAMN derived from diaminomaleonitrile exhibited the highest activity for the photoreduction of CO2 to CO with a generation rate of 20.6 μmol g−1 h−1. Experiments and DFT calculations confirmed cyano/amide groups as active sites for CO2 reduction and second amine groups for H2O oxidation, and suggested that superior selectivity towards CO may be attributed to the adjacent redox sites. This work presents a new insight into designing photocatalysts for artificial photosynthesis.

Formate and CO are competing products in the two-electron CO2 reduction reaction (2e CO2RR), and they are produced via *OCHO and *COOH intermediates, respectively. However, the factors governing CO/formate selectivity remain elusive, especially for metal–carbon–nitrogen (M–N–C) single-atom catalysts (SACs), most of which produce CO as their main product. Herein, we show computationally that the selectivity of M–N–C SACs is intrinsically associated with the CO2 adsorption mode by using bismuth (Bi) nanosheets and the Bi–N–C SAC as model catalysts. According to our results, the Bi–N–C SAC exhibits a strong thermodynamic preference toward *OCHO, but under working potentials, CO2 is preferentially chemisorbed first due to a charge accumulation effect, and subsequent protonation of chemisorbed CO2 to *COOH is kinetically much more favorable than formation of *OCHO. Consequently, the Bi–N–C SAC preferentially produces CO rather than formate. In contrast, the physisorption preference of CO2 on Bi nanosheets contributes to high formate selectivity. Remarkably, this CO2 adsorption-based mechanism also applies to other typical M–N–C SACs. This work not only resolves a long-standing puzzle in M–N–C SACs, but also presents simple, solid criteria (i.e., CO2 adsorption modes) for indicating CO/formate selectivity, which help strategic development of high-performance CO2RR catalysts.

This report discloses a nontrivial role of the CO2 adsorption mode in governing the CO/formate selectivity of single-atom catalysts towards two-electron CO2 reduction.  相似文献

Bimetallic catalysts provide opportunities to overcome scaling laws governing selectivity of CO2 reduction (CO2R). Cu/Au nanoparticles show promise for CO2R, but Au surface segregation on particles with sizes ≥7 nm prevent investigation of surface atom ensembles. Here we employ ultrasmall (2 nm) Cu/Au nanoparticles as catalysts for CO2R. The high surface to volume ratio of ultrasmall particles inhibits formation of a Au shell, enabling the study of ensemble effects in Cu/Au nanoparticles with controllable composition and uniform size and shape. Electrokinetics show a nonmonotonic dependence of C1 selectivity between CO and HCOOH, with the 3Au:1Cu composition showing the highest HCOOH selectivity. Density functional theory identifies Cu2/Au(211) ensembles as unique in their ability to synthesize HCOOH by stabilizing CHOO* while preventing H2 evolution, making C1 product selectivity a sensitive function of Cu/Au surface ensemble distribution, consistent with experimental findings. These results yield important insights into C1 branching pathways and demonstrate how ultrasmall nanoparticles can circumvent traditional scaling laws to improve the selectivity of CO2R.

Reactions of ZrOCl2·8H2O in aqueous solution with a carboxylic acid in the presence of K2CO3 have been studied as a route to ZrIV-carboxylates. With malonic acid (HO2CCH2CO2H) (H2mal) the product has been identified as K4[Zr(mal)4]·2H2O (1) by X-ray crystallography. The individual eight-coordinate zirconium anions contain four bidentate (OO) malonate anions with the metal geometry approximating to a square antiprism with each chelating ligand spanning the two square faces, Zr—O 2.091(3)–2.288(3) Å. The four potassium cations feature irregular coordination spheres of oxygen atoms [from both H2O and (mal) ligand molecules] with a 7–9 coordination range. With 2,6-dicarboxypicolinicacid (HO2CC5NH3CO2H) (H2dipic) the product has been characterised as K4[Zr(dipic)3]2·13.5H2O (2) following X-ray diffraction studies. The structure consists of two [Zr(dipic)3]2- anions, four potassium cations and lattice solvate (H2O) molecules. Individual anions feature nine-coordinate zirconium in which each dipic ligand is terdentate, being bonded via one N (pyridine) and two O (carboxylate) atoms. The metal geometry approximates to tricapped trigonal prismatic with each nitrogen atom capping a regular face of four oxygen atoms, Zr—O, 2.216(6)–2.261(6) Å; Zr—N, 2.343(8)–2.361(7) Å. The potassium cations show similar environments to those observed in structure (1). Understanding the catalyst compositional and structural features that control selectivity is of uttermost importance to target desired products in chemical reactions. In this joint experimental–computational work, we leverage tailored Cu/ZnO precatalysts as a material platform to identify the intrinsic features of methane-producing and ethanol-producing CuZn catalysts in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Specifically, we find that Cu@ZnO nanocrystals, where a central Cu domain is decorated with ZnO domains, and ZnO@Cu nanocrystals, where a central ZnO domain is decorated with Cu domains, evolve into Cu@CuZn core@shell catalysts that are selective for methane (∼52%) and ethanol (∼39%), respectively. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy and various microscopy methods evidence that a higher degree of surface alloying along with a higher concentration of metallic Zn improve the ethanol selectivity. Density functional theory explains that the combination of electronic and tandem effects accounts for such selectivity. These findings mark a step ahead towards understanding structure–property relationships in bimetallic catalysts for the CO2RR and their rational tuning to increase selectivity towards target products, especially alcohols.

A higher degree of surface alloying and Zn concentration boosts the selectivity towards ethanol of CuZn catalysts in CO2 electroreduction.  相似文献

Heterogeneous Ni–N–C single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted great research interest regarding their capability in facilitating the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), with CO accounting for the major product. However, the fundamental nature of their active Ni sites remains controversial, since the typically proposed pyridinic-type Ni configurations are inactive, display low selectivity, and/or possess an unfavorable formation energy. Herein, we present a constant-potential first-principles and microkinetic model to study the CO2RR at a solid–water interface, which shows that the electrode potential is crucial for governing CO2 activation. A formation energy analysis on several NiNxC4−x (x = 1–4) moieties indicates that the predominant Ni moieties of Ni–N–C SACs are expected to have a formula of NiN4. After determining the potential-dependent thermodynamic and kinetic energy of these Ni moieties, we discover that the energetically favorable pyrrolic-type NiN4 moiety displays high activity for facilitating the selective CO2RR over the competing H2 evolution. Moreover, model polarization curves and Tafel analysis results exhibit reasonable agreement with existing experimental data. This work highlights the intrinsic tetrapyrrolic coordination of Ni for facilitating the CO2RR and offers practical guidance for the rational improvement of SACs, and this model can be expanded to explore mechanisms of other electrocatalysis in aqueous solutions.

A constant-potential first-principles and microkinetic model is developed to uncover the nature of heterogeneous Ni–N–C catalysts. It highlights the crucial role of a pyrrolic-type NiN4 moiety in electrochemical CO2 reduction.  相似文献

Cathodic electrodeposition of ZnSe is studied in aqueous acidic selenite (Se(IV)O2) baths of free Zn2+ ions and alkaline selenosulfite (Se0SO32–) baths of zinc complex ions. The synthesis of polycrystalline, cubic ZnSe by Se(IV)-diffusion-controlled electrodeposition from acidic solutions is optimized in terms of selenite concentration, while the effect of Ti, Ni, anodized Ti and CdSe substrates on the obtained layers growth and structural properties is investigated. Furthermore, the production of stoichiometric though amorphous ZnSe is demonstrated using selenosulfite solutions. The results are valuated by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and reflectance spectroscopy techniques.  相似文献

The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is one of the key technologies of the clean energy economy. Molecular-level understanding of the CO2RR process is instrumental for the better design of electrodes operable at low overpotentials with high current density. The catalytic mechanism underlying the turnover and selectivity of the CO2RR is modulated by the nature of the electrocatalyst, as well as the electrolyte liquid, and its ionic components that form the electrical double layer (EDL). Herein we demonstrate the critical non-innocent role of the EDL for the activation and conversion of CO2 at a high cathodic bias for electrocatalytic conversion over a silver surface as a representative low-cost model cathode. By using a multiscale modeling approach we demonstrate that under such conditions a dense EDL is formed, which hinders the diffusion of CO2 towards the Ag111 electrocatalyst surface. By combining DFT calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations we identify favorable pathways for CO2 reduction directly over the EDL without the need for adsorption to the catalyst surface. The dense EDL promotes homogeneous phase reduction of CO2via electron transfer from the surface to the electrolyte. Such an outer-sphere mechanism favors the formation of formate as the CO2RR product. The formate can undergo dehydration to CO via a transition state stabilized by solvated alkali cations in the EDL.

In addition to the commonly accepted inner-sphere mechanism for e transfer, we show that an outer-sphere electron transfer from the cathode to CO2 is operable at high overpotentials.  相似文献

Powered by a renewable electricity source, electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction is a promising solution to facilitate the carbon balance. However, it is still a challenge to achieve a desired product with commercial current density and high efficiency. Herein we designed quasi-square-shaped cadmium hydroxide nanocatalysts for CO2 electroreduction to CO. It was discovered that the catalyst is very active and selective for the reaction. The current density could be as high as 200 mA cm−2 with a nearly 100% selectivity in a commonly used H-type cell using the ionic liquid-based electrolyte. In addition, the faradaic efficiency of CO could reach 90% at a very low overpotential of 100 mV. Density functional theory studies and control experiments reveal that the outstanding performance of the catalyst was attributed to its unique structure. It not only provides low Cd–O coordination, but also exposes high activity (002) facet, which requires lower energy for the formation of CO. Besides, the high concentration of CO can be achieved from the low concentration CO2via an adsorption-electrolysis device.

We present the first example of charged imidazolium functionalized porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (Co-iBFBim-COF-X) for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction, where the free anions (e.g., F, Cl, Br, and I) of imidazolium ions nearby the active Co sites can stabilize the key intermediate *COOH and inhibit hydrogen evolution reaction. Thus, Co-iBFBim-COF-X exhibits higher activity than the neutral Co-BFBim-COF, following the trend of F<Cl<Br<I. Particularly, the Co-iBFBim-COF-I showed nearly 100 % CO2 selectivity at a low full-cell voltage of 2.3 V, and achieved a high CO2 partial current density of 52 mA cm−2 with a turnover frequency of 3018 h−1 at 2.4 V in the anion membrane electrode assembly, which is 3.57 times larger than that of neutral Co-BFBim-COF. This work provides new insight into the importance of free anions in the stabilization of intermediates and decreasing the local binding energy of H2O with active moiety to enhance CO2 reduction reaction.  相似文献

The electrocatalytic carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction reaction (CO2RR) involves a variety of electron transfer pathways, resulting in poor reaction selectivity, limiting its use to meet future energy requirements. Polyoxometalates (POMs) can both store and release multiple electrons in the electrochemical process, and this is expected to be an ideal “electron switch” to match with catalytically active species, realize electron transfer modulation and promote the activity and selectivity of the electrocatalytic CO2RR. Herein, we report a series of new POM-based manganese-carbonyl (MnL) composite CO2 reduction electrocatalysts, whereby SiW12–MnL exhibits the most remarkable activity and selectivity for CO2RR to CO, resulting in an increase in the faradaic efficiency (FE) from 65% (MnL) to a record-value of 95% in aqueous electrolyte. A series of control electrochemical experiments, photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), transient photovoltage (TPV) experiments, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that POMs act as electronic regulators to control the electron transfer process from POM to MnL units during the electrochemical reaction, enhancing the selectivity of the CO2RR to CO and depressing the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This work demonstrates the significance of electron transfer modulation in the CO2RR and suggests a new idea for the design of efficient electrocatalysts towards CO2RR.

A catalytic system based on earth-abundant elements that efficiently hydrogenates aryl olefins using visible light as the driving-force and H2O as the sole hydrogen atom source is reported. The catalytic system involves a robust and well-defined aminopyridine cobalt complex and a heteroleptic Cu photoredox catalyst. The system shows the reduction of styrene in aqueous media with a remarkable selectivity (>20 000) versus water reduction (WR). Reactivity and mechanistic studies support the formation of a [Co–H] intermediate, which reacts with the olefin via a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT). Synthetically useful deuterium-labelled compounds can be straightforwardly obtained by replacing H2O with D2O. Moreover, the dual photocatalytic system and the photocatalytic conditions can be rationally designed to tune the selectivity for aryl olefin vs. aryl ketone reduction; not only by changing the structural and electronic properties of the cobalt catalysts, but also by modifying the reduction properties of the photoredox catalyst.

A dual catalytic system based on earth-abundant elements reduces aryl olefins to alkanes in aqueous media under visible light. Mechanistic studies allow for rational tunning of the system for the selective reduction of aryl olefins vs ketones and vice versa.  相似文献

Water-soluble CdTe quantum dots (QDs) capped with three different thioalkyl acids (mercaptoacetic acid, cysteine and glutathione) were synthesized in aqueous solution. In basic media, K3Fe(CN)6 could directly oxidize the water-soluble CdTe QDs to produce strong CL emission. It was found that the CL intensity depended on the capping ligand and size of CdTe QDs. CL spectra and fluorescence spectra of the system were measured to investigate the CL reaction mechanism. Moreover, the effects of 17 metal ions on the CL system were carefully investigated. Ca2+, Co2+, Mn2+, Hg2+, Mg2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Cr3+ and Fe3+ could markedly inhibit the CL signal of the K3Fe(CN)6–CdTe QDs system, which makes it applicable for the detection of such ions. This work is of importance for gaining a better understanding of the unique optical and physical chemistry properties of QDs, and it is also helpful to find more practical applications of QDs.  相似文献

Electrochemical conversion of CO2 into value-added chemicals continues to draw interest in renewable energy applications. Although many metal catalysts are active in the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), their reactivity and selectivity are nonetheless hindered by the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The competition of the HER and CO2RR stems from the energy scaling relationship between their reaction intermediates. Herein, we predict that bimetallic monolayer electrocatalysts (BMEs) – a monolayer of transition metals on top of extended metal substrates – could produce dual-functional active sites that circumvent the scaling relationship between the adsorption energies of HER and CO2RR intermediates. The antibonding interaction between the adsorbed H and the metal substrate is revealed to be responsible for circumventing the scaling relationship. Based on extensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we identify 11 BMEs which are highly active and selective toward the formation of formic acid with a much suppressed HER. The H–substrate antibonding interaction also leads to superior CO2RR performance on monolayer-coated penta-twinned nanowires.

Dual-functional active sites are designed to circumvent the scaling relationship between the HER and CO2RR on bimetallic monolayer electrocatalysts.  相似文献

This work describes for the first time the employment of water soluble GSH‐ZnSe QDs stabilized by XG and MWCNT for electrode modification in the detection of Cd ions in a highly sensitive and selective manner resulting from the unique structure and surface chemistry of the used QDs. The surface of a glassy carbon (GC) electrode was modified through casting a thin layer of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) followed by a complex layer of ZnSe quantum dots (QDs) stabilized by xanthan gum (XG). Due to the electrocatalytic properties of MWCNT and electroanalytical performance of ZnSe‐XG complex, the new modified electrode significantly improves the sensitivity and selectivity of Cd(II) detection and exhibits enhanced performance in comparison to bare GC, ZnSe/GC and ZnSe/MWCNT/GC electrodes. Strong interactions between ZnSe QDs and XG resulting from hydrogen bonding and complexing association led to stabilization of ZnSe QDs and higher affinity towards Cd(II) ions adsorption compared to a ZnSe QDs film alone. The modified electrode showed linear response in a wide concentration range from 100 nM to 5 μM (R2=0.9967) along with a high sensitivity of 156.6 nA ⋅ mol−1 ⋅ L−1 and a low detection limit of 20 nM. The electrode shows high selectivity to Cd with negligible interference from other metal ions and salts.  相似文献

The phase equilibrium CO2(g)=CO2(aq) and the aqueous reactions CO 3 2– +H+=HCO 3 , HCO 3 +H+=CO2(aq)+H2O, and Na++CO 3 2– =NaCO 3 were studied from 225 to 325°C using a flow calorimetric technique. Heats of mixing of gaseous CO2 with liquid H2O and with aqueous NaOH solutions were measured at these temperatures. Log K, H, S, and Cp values were determined for these reactions from the heat of mixing data. Equations for these thermodynamic quantities valid at infinite dilution (I=0) and 12.4 MPa are given as a function of temperature from 225 to 325°C. The log K and H values agree well with literature values at these temperatures for the first and third reactions, but not for the second reaction. No previous results have been reported for the fourth reaction at high temperatures. The isocoulombic reaction principle is tested using the log K values determined in this study. This principle is found to be valid for the reactions where each charge on one side of the equation is balanced on the other side by a charge of the same sign and magnitude, but not for the reaction where two single negative charges (HCO 3 and OH) are balanced by one double negative charge (CO 3 2– ).Presented at the Second International Symposium on Chemistry in High Temperature Water, Provo, UT, August 1991.Taken in part from the Ph.D. Dissertation of X.
