The Separation of ink and pulp fibers in recycled paper is primarily achieved by flotation methods. Xerographic toners from photocopiers and laser printers are known to cause problems in flotation deinking. Wettability and froth stability are two important factors which determine the floatability of xerographic toners. The floatability is investigated for a selected toner using a cationic, a nonionic, and an anionic surfactant. At low surfactant concentrations the froth is too unstable to support flotation, whereas at high surfactant concentrations the toner is rendered hydrophilic by adsorbed surfactant molecules and does not stick to air bubbles. Consequently, a maximum in flotation response is found at an intermediate surfactant concentration near the critical micelle concentration. Cationic, nonionic, and anionic surfactants all adsorb with their hydrocarbon tails on the toner surface. By choosing appropriate froth-stabilizing additives it is possible to enhance the flotation performance.  相似文献

We describe the effects of confinement on the structure, hydration, and the internal dynamics of ubiquitin encapsulated in reverse micelles (RM). We performed molecular dynamics simulations of the encapsulation of ubiquitin into self-assembled protein/surfactant reverse micelles to study the positioning and interactions of the protein with the RM and found that ubiquitin binds to the RM interface at low salt concentrations. The same hydrophobic patch that is recognized by ubiquitin binding domains in vivo is found to make direct contact with the surfactant head groups, hydrophobic tails, and the iso-octane solvent. The fast backbone N-H relaxation dynamics show that the fluctuations of the protein encapsulated in the RM are reduced when compared to the protein in bulk. This reduction in fluctuations can be explained by the direct interactions of ubiquitin with the surfactant and by the reduced hydration environment within the RM. At high concentrations of excess salt, the protein does not bind strongly to the RM interface and the fast backbone dynamics are similar to that of the protein in bulk. Our simulations demonstrate that the confinement of protein can result in altered protein dynamics due to the interactions between the protein and the surfactant.  相似文献

In this work, we report the effect of concentration of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on the micellization of a cationic surfactant, dodecyldimethylethylammonium bromide (DDAB). Several samples covering a wide range of concentrations of protein and surfactant have been investigated. The interactions between the moieties are investigated by measuring fluorescence quenching of BSA molecules. The aggregation number of DDAB micelles is found to be small in the presence of BSA. The formation of DDAB-BSA complex is confirmed by FTIR. Absorbance spectroscopy indicates that at higher concentration, the conformational stability of BSA in DDAB is higher. The viscosity data for protein-surfactant systems confirm conformational changes in protein chains induced by the surfactant. The cmc values for DDAB increase with increasing concentration of BSA. At higher temperatures the micellization-complexation becomes enthalpy-dominated.  相似文献

The stability and rheology of tricaprylin oil-in-water emulsions containing a mixture of surface-active hydrophilic silica nanoparticles and pure nonionic surfactant molecules are reported and compared with those of emulsions stabilized by each emulsifier alone. The importance of the preparation protocol is highlighted. Addition of particles to a surfactant-stabilized emulsion results in the appearance of a small population of large drops due to coalescence, possibly by bridging of adsorbed particles. Addition of surfactant to a particle-stabilized emulsion surprisingly led to increased coalescence too, although the resistance to creaming increased mainly due to an increase in viscosity. Simultaneous emulsification of particles and surfactant led to synergistic stabilization at intermediate concentrations of surfactant; emulsions completely stable to both creaming and coalescence exist at low overall emulsifier concentration. Using the adsorption isotherm of surfactant on particles and the viscosity and optical density of aqueous particle dispersions, we show that the most stable emulsions are formed from dispersions of flocculated, partially hydrophobic particles. From equilibrium contact angle and oil-water interfacial tension measurements, the calculated free energy of adsorption E of a silica particle to the oil-water interface passes through a maximum with respect to surfactant concentration, in line with the emulsion stability optimum. This results from a competition between the influence of particle hydrophobicity and interfacial tension on the magnitude of E.  相似文献

We have used dynamic interfacial tension measurements to understand the structure of the ordered monolayer at the hexadecane/water interface induced by the presence of surfactant molecules. No abrupt changes in the interfacial tension (gamma) are observed during the expansion and contraction cycle below the interfacial ordering temperature (Ti) as observed for alkanes in contact with air. The lack of an abrupt change in gamma and the magnitude of this change during the expansion process indicate that the ordered phase may not be crystalline. The change in the interfacial tension is due to an increase in contact between water and hexadecane molecules and the disordering of the interfacial ordered layer. At low surfactant concentrations, the recovery of the interfacial tension is slower below Ti, suggesting that there is a critical surfactant concentration necessary to nucleate an ordered phase at the interface.  相似文献

The dilational properties of partly hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) and 4,5-diheptyl-2-propylbenzene sulfonate (377) mixed systems in the absence or presence of electrolyte or oleic acid at the oil-water interface have been described by means of the oscillating barriers method and the interfacial tension relaxation method. The polymer plays different roles in influencing the nature of polymer-surfactant adsorbed layers at different surfactant concentrations. At low surfactant concentration, the addition of polymer perhaps weakens the “entanglement” of long alkyl chains, which decreases strikingly the dilational modulus of the adsorbed layer. At high surfactant concentration, the addition of the polymer increases the dilational modulus due to the hydrophobic interactions between polymer and surfactant molecules. On the case of adding electrolyte, the frequency dependence of dilational modulus increases due to the enhancement of exchange process of surfactant molecules and bivalent cation has more obvious effect than Na ion. Oleic acid plays dual roles in controlling interfacial dilational properties of mixed adsorption films: a small quantity of oleic acid increases the dilational modulus by forming densely packed mixed adsorption layer with surfactant molecules, while the superfluous addition of oleic acid could decrease the dilational modulus mainly due to the weakening of the “entanglement” among long alkyl chains in surfactant molecules.  相似文献

Cutinase from Humicola insolens (HiC) has previously been shown to bind anomalously low amounts of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS). In the current work, we have applied scanning and titration calorimetry to investigate possible relationships between this weak interaction and the effect of SDS on the equilibrium and kinetic stability of HiC. The results are presented in a "state-diagram," which specifies the stable form of the protein as a function of temperature and SDS concentration. In comparison with other proteins, the equilibrium stability HiC is strongly decreased by SDS. For low SDS concentrations (SDS:HiC molar ratio, MR < 8) this trait is also found for the kinetically controlled thermal aggregation of the protein. At higher MR, however, SDS stabilizes noticeably against irreversible aggregation. We suggest that this relies on electrostatic repulsion of the increasingly negatively charged HiC-SDS complexes. The combined interpretation of calorimetric and binding data allowed the calculation of the changes in enthalpy and heat capacity for the association of HiC and SDS near the saturation point. The latter function was about -410 J mol(-1) K(-1) or similar to the heat capacity change for micelle formation (-470 J mol(-1) K(-1)). This suggests that SDS is hydrated to a similar extent in the micellar and protein associated forms. The results are discussed in terms of the Wyman theory for linked equilibria. Quantitative analysis along these lines suggests that the reversible thermal unfolding of the protein couples to the binding of 2-3 additional SDS molecules. This corresponds to a 15-20% increase in the binding number. Wyman theory also rationalizes relationships between low affinity and high susceptibility observed in this study.  相似文献

The interaction of a light-responsive azobenzene surfactant with bovine serum albumin (BSA) has been investigated as a means to examine photoreversible changes in protein secondary structure. The cationic azobenzene surfactant undergoes a reversible photoisomeriztion upon exposure to the appropriate wavelength of light, with the visible-light (trans) form being more hydrophobic and, thus, inducing a greater degree of protein unfolding than the UV-light (cis) form. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy is used to provide quantitative information on the secondary structure elements in the protein (alpha-helices, beta-strands, beta-turns, and unordered domains). Comparing the secondary structure changes induced by light illumination in the presence of the photoresponsive surfactant with previous measurements of the tertiary structure of BSA obtained from small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) allows the three discrete conformation changes in BSA to be fully characterized. At low surfactant concentrations, an alpha-helix --> beta-structure rearrangement is observed as the tertiary structure of BSA changes from a heart-shaped to a distorted heart-shaped conformation. Intermediate surfactant concentrations lead to a dramatic decrease in the alpha-helix fraction in favor of unordered structures, which is accompanied by an unfolding of the C-terminal portion of the protein as evidenced from SANS. Further increases in photosurfactant concentration lead to a beta --> unordered transition with the protein adopting a highly elongated conformation in solution. Each of these protein conformational changes can be precisely and reversibly controlled with light illumination, as revealed through FT-IR spectra collected during repeated visible-light <--> UV-light cycles.

The properties of aqueous foams stabilized by a mixture of negatively charged silica nanoparticles and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide were studied in this work. Rheological properties of the foams were studied. The interaction between nanoparticles and surfactant molecules in the bulk phase was studied by zeta potential and size measurements of the particles. The interaction at the interface was studied by means of interfacial shear rheology, surface pressure measurement, and atomic force microscopy. It was found that foams were more stable at low surfactant concentrations, though the foamability was low. This was due to the formation of a strong viscoelastic film of surfactant-laden particles at the air–water interface. A suitable mechanism has been proposed to explain the stability of foams in the presence of nanoparticles at different surfactant concentrations.  相似文献

We investigated the structure and stability of dodecane-in-water emulsions stabilised by partially hydrophobised silica particles after dilution of the emulsions in solutions of sodium dodecyl sulfate and sodium chloride. The emulsions were stable to coalescence on dilution in salt solutions, but did cream over time. The rate and extent of creaming gradually decreased as the salt concentration in the diluted emulsion increased. Dilution in low concentrations of the anionic surfactant did not affect the emulsion stability to coalescence or alter the creaming behaviour of the emulsion. At surfactant concentrations above the critical micelle concentration, however, the rate and extent of creaming and flocculation of the drops were enhanced.  相似文献

The effect of surfactants' type and concentration on the interfacial tension and contact angle in the presence of hydrophilic silica particles was investigated. Silica particles have been shown to have an antagonistic effect on interfacial tension and contact angle in the presence of both W/O and O/W surfactants. Silica particles, combined with W/O surfactant, have no effect on interfacial tension, which is only dictated by the surfactant concentration, while they strongly affect interfacial tension when combined with O/W surfactants. At low O/W surfactant, both particles and surfactant are adsorbed at the interface, modifying the interface structure. At higher concentration, interfacial tension is only dictated by the surfactant. By increasing the surfactant concentration, the contact angle that a drop of aqueous phase assumes on a glass substrate placed in oil media decreases or increases depending on whether the surfactant is of W/O or O/W type, respectively. This is due to the modification of the wettability of the glass by the oil or water induced by the surfactants. Regardless of the surfactant's type, the contact angle profile was dictated by both particles and surfactant at low surfactant concentration, whereas it is dictated by the surfactant only at high concentration.  相似文献

The binding of organic contaminants to dissolved humic acids reduces the free concentration of the contaminants in the environment and also may cause changes to the solution properties of humic acids. Surfactants are a special class of contaminants that are introduced into the environment either through wastewater or by site-specific contamination. The amphiphilic nature of both surfactants and humic acids can easily lead to their mutual attraction and consequently affect the solution behavior of the humics. Binding of an anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) and two cationic surfactants (dodecyl- and cetylpyridinium chloride, DPC and CPC) to purified Aldrich humic acid (PAHA) is studied at pH values of 5, 7, and 10 in solutions with a 0.025 M ionic strength (I). Monomer concentrations of the surfactants are measured with a surfactant-selective electrode. At I = 0.025 M, no significant binding is observed between the anionic surfactant (SDS) and PAHA, whereas the two cationic surfactants (DPC, CPC) bind strongly to PAHA over the pH range investigated. The binding is due both to electrostatic and hydrophobic attraction. The initial affinity increases with increasing pH (i.e., negative charge of PAHA) and tail length of the surfactant. Binding reaches a pseudo-plateau value (2-5 mmol/g) when the charge associated with PAHA is neutralized by that of the bound surfactant molecules. The pseudo-plateau values for DPC and CPC are very similar and depend on the solution pH. The cationic surfactant-PAHA complexes precipitate when the charge neutralization point is reached. This occurs at approximately 10% of the critical micelle concentration or CMC. This type of phase separation commonly occurs during surfactant binding to oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. For CPC, the precipitation is complete, but in the case of DPC, a noticeable fraction of PAHA remains in solution. At very low CPC concentrations (less than 0.1% of the CMC), CPC binding to PAHA is cooperative. The investigated range of concentrations for DPC was too limited to reach a similar conclusion. The results of this study demonstrate that the fate of humic acids will be strongly affected by the presence of low cationic surfactant concentrations in aqueous environmental systems.  相似文献

The adsorption of the surface-active protein hydrophobin, HFBII, and the competitive adsorption of HFBII with the cationic, anionic, and nonionic surfactants hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB, sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, and hexaethylene monododecyl ether, C(12)E(6), has been studied using neutron reflectivity, NR. HFBII adsorbs strongly at the air-water interface to form a dense monolayer ~30 ? thick, with a mean area per molecule of ~400 ?(2) and a volume fraction of ~0.7, for concentrations greater than 0.01 g/L, and the adsorption is independent of the solution pH. In competition with the conventional surfactants CTAB, SDS, and C(12)E(6) at pH 7, the HFBII adsorption totally dominates the surface for surfactant concentrations less than the critical micellar concentration, cmc. Above the cmc of the conventional surfactants, HFBII is displaced by the surfactant (CTAB, SDS, or C(12)E(6)). For C(12)E(6) this displacement is only partial, and some HFBII remains at the surface for concentrations greater than the C(12)E(6) cmc. At low pH (pH 3) the patterns of adsorption for HFBII/SDS and HFBII/C(12)E(6) are different. At concentrations just below the surfactant cmc there is now mixed HFBII/surfactant adsorption for both SDS and C(12)E(6). For the HFBII/SDS mixture the structure of the adsorbed layer is more complex in the region immediately below the SDS cmc, resulting from the HFBII/SDS complex formation at the interface.  相似文献

The adsorption of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) onto a ceramic glaze mixture composed of limestone, feldspar, quartz, and kaolin has been investigated. Both adsorption isotherms and the average particle zeta potential have been studied in order to understand the suspension stability as a function of pH, ionic strength, and surfactant concentration. The adsorption of small amounts of cationic CPC onto the primarily negatively charged surfaces of the particles at pH 7 and 9 results in strong attraction and flocculation due to hydrophobic interactions. At higher surfactant concentrations a zeta potential of more than +60 mV results from the bilayered adsorbed surfactant, providing stability at salt concentrations < or = 0.01 M. At 0.1 M salt poor stability results despite substantial zeta potential values. Three mechanisms for SDBS adsorption have been identified. When anionic SDBS monomers either adsorb by electrostatic interactions with the few positive surface sites at high pH or adsorb onto like charged negative surface sites due to dispersion or hydrophobic interactions, the magnitude of the negative zeta potential increases slightly. At pH 9 this increase is enough to promote stability with an average zeta potential of more than -55 mV, whereas at pH 7 the zeta potential is lower at about -45 mV. The stability of suspensions at pH 7 is additionally due to steric repulsion caused by the adsorption of thick layers of neutrally charged Ca(DBS)2 complexes created when the surfactant interacts with dissolved calcium ions from the calcium carbonate component.  相似文献

We present experimental results about the effects of thermal treatment, ionic strength, and pH on the protein adsorption and coalescence stability of freshly prepared (2 h after emulsification) and 6-day-stored emulsions, stabilized by the globular protein beta-lactoglobulin (BLG). In all emulsions studied, the volume fraction of the dispersed soybean oil is 30% and the mean drop diameter is d(32) approximately 40 microm. The protein concentration, C(BLG), is varied between 0.02 and 0.1 wt %, the electrolyte concentration, C(EL), between 1.5 mM and 1 M, and pH between 4.0 and 7.0. The emulsion heating is performed at 85 degrees C, which is above the denaturing temperature of BLG. The results show that, at C(BLG) > or = 0.04 wt %, C(EL) > or = 150 mM, and pH > or = 6.2, the heating leads to higher protein adsorption and to irreversible attachment of the adsorbed molecules, which results in enhanced steric repulsion between the protein adsorption multilayers and to higher emulsion stability. At low electrolyte concentration, C(EL) < or = 10 mM, the emulsion stability is determined by electrostatic interactions and is not affected significantly by the emulsion heating. The latter result is explained by electrostatic repulsion between the adsorbed protein molecules, which keeps them separated from each other and thus precludes the formation of disulfide covalent bonds in the protein adsorption layer. The coalescence stability of heated and nonheated emulsions is practically the same and does not depend on C(EL), when pH is around the isoelectric point (IEP) of the protein molecules. This is explained with the adsorption of uncharged BLG molecules, in compact conformation, which stores the reactive sulfhydryl groups hidden inside the molecule interior, thus preventing the formation of covalent intermolecular bonds upon heating. We studied also the effect of storage time on the stability of heated and nonheated emulsions. The stability of nonheated emulsions (C(BLG) = 0.1 wt %, C(EL) > or = 150 mM, and pH = 6.2) significantly decreases after 1 day of storage (aging effect). In contrast, no aging effect is observed after emulsion heating. FTIR spectra of heated and nonheated, fresh and aged emulsions suggest that the aging effect is caused by slow conformational changes of the protein molecules in the adsorption layer, accompanied with partial loss of the ordered secondary structure of the protein and with the formation of lateral noncovalent bonds (H-bonds and hydrophobic interactions) between the adsorbed molecules. After thermal treatment of the BLG emulsions, the molecules preserve their original secondary structure upon storage, which eliminates the aging effect.  相似文献

At low surfactant concentration the loss of molecules in the bulk phase due to adsorption can be significant if the surface-area-to-bulk-volume ratio is large. This loss of molecules, however, can be used to determine the adsorption of a surfactant if the experiments are performed under well-controlled conditions. Experiments are performed with the model surfactant tridecyldimethylphosphine oxide (C13DMPO) using drop profile analysis and ring tensiometry. Taking into account the different area/volume ratios and the measured equilibrium surface tensions as a measure of the final surfactant bulk concentration, the adsorption of C13DMPO is determined.  相似文献
