Synthesis and biological activity of α-alkylacrolein dimers and their derivatives

Dimers of methacrolein and α-ethylacrolein have been obtained and undergo a Cannizzaro reaction to the corresponding pyran alcohols and sodium salts of pyran acids. Rhodium-catalyzed coupling of α-lactams with indole derivatives

We report herein a method that allows for the formation of a C–N bond between the C–3 carbon of α-lactams and the nitrogen atom of indoles. A general procedure for the coupling of indoles and α-lactams in only 25 min with high yield is reported. The scope of the reaction was extended by the development of a method for the in situ generation of less stable phenyl-substituted α-lactams. The developed method provides an atom-economical method for the formation of substituted α-amino amides that are found in a variety of biologically-active compounds.     

Studies on the Hydrosilation of Aromatic Aldehydes

The dependence of reactivity on molecular structure in hydro-silation of aromatic aldehydes catalyzed by (PPh3)3 RhCl was studied by “IN SITU” FT-IR technique and a plausible mechanism was proposed.The results show that: (1) Model reaction Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ are all characterized by an induction period; (2) The reaction constant of model reaction Ⅰ is +1.57, so the rare of reaction Ⅰ is increased by the electron-withdrawing groups; (3) The rate of model reaction Ⅲ decreases when the size of R1 becomes larger; (4) The reaction constant of model reaction Ⅲ is -0. 50, so the rate of it is increased by electron-donating groups.

Influence of photodynamic effect on biological activity of PBR–PP complexes

The aim of this study was to examine the influence of photodynamic effect on biological activity of PBR–PP complexes. These measurements were performed in pH dependent environment. Constant concentration of solubilized receptor was titrated with increasing concentration of porphyrins (PPIX, Hp, PP(Arg)₂, Hp(Arg)₂, PP(Gly)₂, PP(Ala)₂, PP(Ser)₂, PP(Phe)₂) and binding constants were calculated. PBP–PP mixtures were illuminated with 3 J, 5 J or 10 J of blue light and changes in protein fluorescence was recorded. Experimental data were fitted to weak and strong binding models. As a result for all derivatives weak binding model was the best fitted. The strongest binding showed PPIX in pH 7.4 and with pH drop binding constants showed greater values for all examined derivatives. Out of amino acid derivatives the strongest binding was noticed for PP(Gly)₂ and PP(Phe)₂ and for the last one pH influence was not observed.     

Ytterbium triflate catalyzed synthesis of β-functionalized indole derivatives

Ytterbium triflate was shown to be effective in promoting the synthesis of substituted indole derivatives starting from indole, aldehydes, and dimethyl malonate by a Yonemitsu-type three component reaction. The whole process was carried out in solvent-free conditions and furnished the desired adducts in 42-67% yield.     

2,2′-Dihydroxy-3,3′-dimethoxy-5,5′-dimethyl-6,6′-dibromo-1,1′-biphenyl: preparation,resolution, structure and biological activity

The preparation and resolution of the titled conformationally stable biphenyl 1 has been performed in high chemical yield starting from creosol 2. Enantiopure biphenyls (aR)-(+)-1 and (aS)-(−)-1 were obtained by the corresponding menthylcarbonate diastereomer and successive reduction. The absolute configuration and specific rotation were correlated by X-ray analysis of the crystal structure of diastereopure menthylcarbonate (aS,1R,1′R,2S,2′S,5R,5′R)-(+)-16. Preliminary biological evaluation of both racemic enantiomers of 1 has been carried out on melanoma cell lines and significant and selective anticancer activity has been observed for the enantiomer (aS)-(−)-1.

Analytical properties of the amidooxime group. V. Thermometric study of 3,3′-oxy-, 3,3′-thio- and 3,3′-iminodipropioamidooxime

The thermometric behaviour of three amidooximes (3,3′-oxy-, 3,3′-thio- and 3,3′-iminodipropioamidooxime) is studied in order to evaluate the errors in their thermometric titration with HCl and the corresponding neutralization enthalpies from the analysis of the enthalpograms. The dissociation parameters (ΔG_i, ΔH_i and ΔS_i) of the three compounds at 25°C are evaluated from the pK_a values and neutralization enthalpies.     

Studies on the biological activity of tocotrienols

Tocotrienols were evaluated for activity against transplantable murine tumors inoculated i.p. into mouse, and the activities of two tocotrienols and alpha-tocopherols were compared. When the compounds were injected i.p., alpha- and gamma-tocotrienols were effective against sarcoma 180, Ehrlich carcinoma, and IMC carcinoma, and gamma-tocotrienol showed a slight life-prolonging effect in mice with Meth A fibrosarcoma, but the tocotrienols had no antitumor activity against P388 leukemia at doses of 5-40 mg/kg/d. On the other hand alpha-tocopherol had only a slight effect against sarcoma 180 and IMC carcinoma. The antitumor activity of gamma-tocotrienol was higher than that of alpha-tocotrienol. Tocotrienols showed growth inhibition of human and mouse tumor cells when the cells were exposed to these agents for 72 h in vitro, whereas tocopherol did not show any marked cytotoxic activity. Alpha- and gamma-tocotrienols had inhibitory effects on lipid peroxidation of murine microsomes by adriamycin.     

Boron—nitrogen compounds : LXX. Boron derivatives of 3,3′-diaminodipropylamine

The reaction of borane(3) with 3,3′-diaminodipropylamine yields BH₂B-bridge associated [3,3′-bis(dihydroborylamino)dipropylamino]dihydroborane, 1-aminopropyl-1,3,2-diazaboracyclohexane, or 1,8,10,9-triazaboradecalin (I), depending on the reaction conditions and the stoichiometry of the reactants. If tris(dimethylamino)borane is treated with 3,3′-diaminodipropylamine, only I or 1-bis-(dimethylamino)boryl-1,8,10,9-triazaboradecalin are obtained.     

Synthesis and mass spectrum of 3,3′-thiobispyridine and polarographic reduction of 1,1′-dimethyl-3,3′-thiobispyridinediium diiodide

3,3′-Thiobispyridine is prepared by reaction of pyridine-3-thiol with 3-bromopyridine. The base peak in the mass spectrum of 3,3′-thiobispyridine is due to the molecular ion which fragments by loss of H, HCN and CS as well as by central bond rupture. The 1,1′-dimethyl diquaternary salt of 3,3′-thiobispyridine is reduced polarographically by a one electron transfer not involving hydrogen to an unstable radical cation at a potential (E_o) of −0.72 V in the pH range 7.4–11.2.     

Studies on 3,3′-dichloro-, 4,4′-dichloro- and 5,5′-dichloro,2-2′-dimethyldithizone and their reactions with metal ions

Three new derivatives of dithizone are reported, with their electronic and i.r. spectra, acidity constants and partition coefficients between 0.5 M sodium perchlorate and chloroform or carbon tetrachloride. The extraction equilibria with Cd, Co(II), Hg(II), Ni, Pb, Tl(I), Zn and Bi and the spectrophotometric characteristics of the extractable metal chelates are described. Complete extraction of these complexes requires higher pH than that needed with dithizone itself. The 4,4′-dichloroisomer is more efficient than the 3,3′ and 5,5′-isomers, or dithizone itself, for the separation of cadmium from zinc or cobalt from nickel.
