A new photoelastic model for studying fatigue crack closure   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The photoelastic analysis of crack tip stress intensity factors has been historically developed for use on sharp notches in brittle materials that idealize the cracked structure. This approach, while useful, is not applicable to cases where residual effects of fatigue crack development (e.g., plasticity, surface roughness) affect the applied stress intensity range. A photoelastic model of these fatigue processes has been developed using polycarbonate, which is sufficiently ductile to allow the growth of a fatigue crack. The resultant stress field has been modeled mathematically using the stress potential function approach of Muskhelishvili to predict the stresses near a loaded but closed crack in an elastic body. The model was fitted to full-field photoelastic data using a combination of a generic algorithm and the downhill simplex method. The technique offers a significant advance in the ability to characterize the behavior of fatigue cracks with plasticity-induced closure, and hence to gain new insights into the associated mechanisms.  相似文献

采用四步法计算了考虑循环载荷中压应力影响的正交异性钢桥面板的肋-面板焊缝表面裂纹扩展。第一步是基于正交异性钢桥面板的疲劳分析模型,计算肋-面板焊缝处的应力,第二步是通过肋-面板焊缝的三维局部模型,用Schwartz-Neumann交替法计算焊缝表面裂纹的应力强度因子分布,第三步是用二维断裂力学模型和增量塑性损伤模型,计算循环载荷中的压应力对裂纹扩展的影响,第四步是用第二步中的三维裂纹分析结果和第三步中的二维断裂力学模型得到的裂纹扩展公式,计算钢桥面板的肋-面板焊缝表面裂纹扩展。计算结果表明,对应于正交异性钢桥面板肋-面板焊缝处的循环应力,本文所用模型的裂纹尖端反向塑性区导致裂纹扩展率增加50%以上。研究结果为正交异性钢桥面板肋-面板焊缝裂纹的疲劳寿命分析提供了研究基础。  相似文献

This work examines the fracture behavior of a functionally graded material (FGM) plate containing parallel surface cracks with alternating lengths subjected to a thermal shock. The thermal stress intensity factors (TSIFs) at the tips of long and short cracks are calculated using a singular integral equation technique. The critical thermal shock △Tc that causes crack initiation is calculated using a stress intensity factor criterion. Numerical examples of TSIFs and △Tc for an Al2O3/Si3N4 FGM plate are presented to illustrate the effects of thermal property gradation, crack spacing and crack length ratio on the TSIFs and △Tc. It is found that for a given crack length ratio, the TSIFs at the tips of both long and short cracks can be reduced significantly and △Tc can be enhanced by introducing appropriate material gradation. The TSIFs also decrease dramatically with a decrease in crack spacing. The TSIF at the tips of short cracks may be higher than that for the long cracks under certain crack geometry conditions. Hence, the short cracks instead of long cracks may first start to grow under the thermal shock loading.  相似文献

Experiments are described which determined the effects of various residual stress distributions on the growth rate of fatigue cracks. For each stress distribution, the contribution (KRS) to the net stress intensity at the crack tip is determined, and a comparison is then made with the behaviour predicted using a fracture mechanics approach based on a weight function analysis and a simple crack closure model. The example studied is a thickwalled pressure vessel containing a longitudinal crack which grows radially from the inner surface; fatigue cracks were grown under laboratory conditions in ring test specimens. sectioned from vessels which had been cold-expanded by different amounts to increase their pressure limits, and so contained various complex residual stress distributions. The experiments provide direct evidence that the effects of residual stress (and by extension, thermal stress) on the crack tip stress intensity may be modelled conveniently using weight function techniques, and can be incorporated satisfactorily in fatigue crack growth analyses.  相似文献

In the present work, the eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM) is used to study the effect of bi-material interfaces on fatigue life in galvanised panels. X-FEM and Paris law are implemented in ABAQUS software using Python code. The XFEM method proved to be an adequate method for stress intensity factor computation, and, furthermore, no remeshing is required for crack growth simulations. A study of fatigue crack growth is conducted for several substrate materials, and the influence of the initial crack angle is ascertained. This study also compares the crack growth rate between three types of bi-materials alloys zinc/steel, zinc/aluminium, and zinc/zinc. The interaction between two cracks and fatigue life, in the presence of bi-material interface, is investigated as well.  相似文献

本文用 16 Mn和 A 537 两种普通低合金钢试件,较系统地研究了停歇对疲劳超载迟滞效应的影响。研究表明,疲劳载荷中的停歇对超载迟滞效应有明显影响,其影响的程度大小与停歇时的载荷 P_H,停歇时间 t_H 等因素密切相关;不但可能使试件的疲劳寿命减少,也可能使试件的疲劳寿命增加。在工程结构疲劳设计、分析及应用超载迟滞效应时应予以注意。  相似文献

建立了一种无形状约束的模拟表面裂纹在线弹性断裂力学条件下疲劳扩展的数值方法,并研究了表面疲劳裂纹形状演化和裂纹尖端应力强度因子(SIF)的分布特征。该方法以三维有限单元技术和Paris疲劳裂纹扩展规律为基础,并在裂纹扩展增量计算中考虑了裂纹闭合影响。本文第一部分主要介绍模拟三维疲劳裂纹扩展的数值方法的理论背景和相关的技术细节。着重分析和讨论基于三维有限单元法计算裂纹SIF所涉及的几个主要问题:裂纹尖端单元网格密度对估算精度的影响;自由表面的影响及其修正方法;裂纹尖端非正交单元网格的影响及修正方法。  相似文献

传统的研究含缺口构件的疲劳的方法是将疲劳启裂和疲劳裂纹扩展两个过程完全独立起来,用不同的方法来模拟,相互间并没有定量的关系。本文是基于最新发展的多轴疲劳损伤理论,建立了一种适用于各种载荷条件下的疲劳启裂和裂纹扩展的普适方法。根据从弹塑性分析中得到的应力应变,确定疲劳损伤模型,建立能够预测疲劳启裂、裂纹扩展速率和扩展方向的新方法。整个模拟可以分为两步:弹-塑性应力分析得到材料的应力应变分布;再运用一个通用的疲劳准则预测疲劳裂纹启裂和裂纹扩展。通过对1070号钢含缺口试件的疲劳全寿命预测,得到了与实验非常吻合的模拟结果。  相似文献

The paper proposes a new approach for shape optimisation with fatigue life as the design objective. Conventional designs often incorporate stress optimisation that aims at reducing stress concentrations around a structural boundary by minimising the peak stress. However, this is only an effective and sufficient measure for an ‘ideal’ or ‘flaw-less’ structure. It is a well-known fact that flaws (cracks) are inevitably present in most structures. This emphasises the need to investigate the influence of cracks on optimised shapes. Numerical modelling of cracks using the Finite Element Method requires a fine mesh to model the singularity at crack tips, which makes fracture calculations computationally expensive. Furthermore, for a damage tolerance based optimisation, numerous cracks are to be considered at various arbitrary locations in a structure, and fatigue life evaluation needs to be repeated for each crack at every iteration. This makes the optimisation process extremely computationally inefficient for practical purpose. Moreover, the lack of information concerning crack size, orientation, and location makes the formulation of the optimisation problem difficult. As a result, there has been inadequate research to consider fracture parameters, such as fatigue life, in the optimisation objective. To address this, the paper presents an approach for the shape optimisation of damage tolerant structures with fatigue life as the design constraint.The damage tolerance based optimisation was performed using a number of nonlinear programming algorithms, namely the Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS) method, the Fletcher Reeves (Conjugate Direction) method, and the Sequential Unconstrained Minimisation Technique (SUMT). These methods were extended for optimising the fatigue life in the presence of numerous surface cracks. A significant enhancement in fatigue life was achieved for various crack cases consisting of different initial and final crack sizes. It is shown that the fatigue life optimised shapes can be considerably different from the corresponding stress optimised solution. This emphasises the need to explicitly consider fatigue life as a distinct design objective when optimising damage tolerant structures. A fatigue life optimisation leads to the generation of a ‘near uniform’ fatigue critical surface. The design space near the ‘optimal’ region was found to be relatively flat. This means that the precise identification of the local/global optimum solution is not critical, because a significant structural performance enhancement can be achieved in the ‘near’ optimal region. An additional benefit of fatigue life optimisation is that the resulting optimised shapes may even be lighter than the stress optimised designs. To verify the optimal solutions obtained using the nonlinear programming algorithms, the results were compared with those obtained using a heuristic optimisation method (Biological algorithm). The solutions predicted by both the methods, employing inherently different (gradient-based and gradient-less) algorithms, were found to agree very well.  相似文献

In this paper, two different fracture criteria are applied to determine the crack trajectory or angle of crack propagation in test specimens containing inclined cracks emanating from open holes. Also, different crack growth rate models are assumed for each criterion. The maximum principal stress criterion is used with a crack growth-rate equation based on an effective stress intensity factor. The strain energy density criterion is used with a crack growth-rate equation corresponding to an effective strain energy density factor. The crack growth-rate models for each criterion were constructed using unpublished fatigue crack growth data for 2024-T3 aluminum.  相似文献

In this paper, the local stress intensity factor solutions for kinked cracks near spot welds in lap-shear specimens are investigated by finite element analyses. Based on the experimental observations of kinked crack growth mechanisms in lap-shear specimens under cyclic loading conditions, three-dimensional and two-dimensional plane-strain finite element models are established to investigate the local stress intensity factor solutions for kinked cracks emanating from the main crack. Semi-elliptical cracks with various kink depths are assumed in the three-dimensional finite element analysis. The local stress intensity factor solutions at the critical locations or at the maximum depths of the kinked cracks are obtained. The computational local stress intensity factor solutions at the critical locations of the kinked cracks of finite depths are expressed in terms of those for vanishing kink depth based on the global stress intensity factor solutions and the analytical kinked crack solutions for vanishing kink depth. The three-dimensional finite element computational results show that the critical local mode I stress intensity factor solution increases and then decreases as the kink depth increases. When the kink depth approaches to 0, the critical local mode I stress intensity factor solution appears to approach to that for vanishing kink depth based on the global stress intensity factor solutions and the analytical kinked crack solutions for vanishing kink depth. The two-dimensional plane-strain computational results indicate that the critical local mode I stress intensity factor solution increases monotonically and increases substantially more than that based on the three-dimensional computational results as the kink depth increases. The local stress intensity factor solutions of the kinked cracks of finite depths are also presented in terms of those for vanishing kink depth based on the global stress intensity factor solutions and the analytical kinked crack solutions for vanishing kink depth. Finally, the implications of the local stress intensity factor solutions for kinked cracks on fatigue life prediction are discussed.  相似文献

This paper discusses an analytical and experimental investigations of the fatigue crack growth behavior in attachment lugs subjected to a randomized flight-by-flight spectrum. In the analysis, the stress intensity factors for through-the-thickness cracks initiating from lug holes were compared by weight function method, boundary element method (BEM), the interpolation of Brussat’s solution. The stress intensity factors of a corner crack at a transition region were obtained using two parameter weight function method and correction factors. Fatigue life under a load spectrum was predicted using stress intensity factors and Willenborg retardation model considering the effects of a tensile overload. Experiments were performed under a load spectrum and compared with the fatigue life prediction using the stress intensity factors by different methods. Changes of fatigue life and aspect ratio according to the clipping level of the spectrum were discussed through experiment and prediction. Effect of the spectrum clipping level on the fatigue life was experimentally evaluated by using beach marks of fractured surface.  相似文献

钢丝裂纹应力强度因子是进行钢丝疲劳断裂寿命评估、疲劳裂纹扩展分析和钢丝断裂强度评估等工作的重要参数。本文首先介绍了裂纹扩展分析软件FRANC3D,然后基于子模型法模拟研究了拉伸荷载作用下带有表面裂纹钢丝的应力强度因子,裂纹种类包括直线形裂纹和半圆形裂纹,最后拟合得到拉伸荷载作用下带表面裂纹钢丝的应力强度因子形状修正系数表达式,分析了利用该公式进行承载力评估时产生误差的原因。研究结果表明,利用子模型模拟分析拉伸荷载作用下带有表面裂纹的钢丝应力强度因子时计算精度高,计算速度快,对计算机硬件要求低;利用该方法得到的钢丝裂纹应力强度因子,在进行索承式桥梁吊索安全性能评估时,评估结果更精确。  相似文献

After finishing 102 replicate constant amplitude crack initiation and growth tests onLyl2-CZ aluminum alloy plate,a statistical investigation of the fatigue crack initiation and growthprocess is conducted in this paper.According to the post-mortem fractographic examination by scan-ning electron microscopy (SEM),some qualitative observations of the spacial correlation among fa-tigue striations are developed to reveal the statistical nature of material intrinsic inhomogeneity duringthe crack growth process.From the test data,an engineering division between crack initiation andgrowth is defined as the upper limit of small crack.The distributions of crack initiation life N.,growthlife N,and the statistical characteristics of crack growth rate da/dN are also investigated.It is hopedthat the work will provide a solid test basis for the study of probabilistic fatigue,probabilistic fracturemechanics,fatigue reliability and its engineering applications.  相似文献

The behavior of crack growth for the fatigue damage accumulation near tip where damage is most severe is analyzed. Fatigue life is assessed for the welded members of bridges under traffic loading. Two parts are considered. They consist of the development of a fatigue damage accumulation model for welded bridge members and a method for calculating the stress intensity factor that is needed for evaluating the fatigue life of welded bridge members with cracks. Based on the concept of continuum damage accumulation and fatigue and fatigue crack growth relations, results are obtained to describe the relationship between the cracking count rate and the effective stress intensity factor. Crack growth and fatigue life are found for two types of welded members assisted by using fatigue experimental results. The stress intensity factors are modified by correcting for the geometric shape of the welded members in order to reflect the influence of the weldment and geometry. This is accomplished via the stress intensity factor. The calculated and measured fatigue lives were generally in good agreement for the initial cracking conditions of two types of welded members widely used in steel bridges.  相似文献

脆性材料内部含有大量裂纹,当某一裂纹扩展时,其他裂纹会对扩展裂纹产生影响。为了研究冲击载荷下,脆性材料内两裂纹的相互影响、连通规律及裂纹尖端应力强度因子的变化规律,利用有机玻璃板制作了含非平行双裂纹的实验试件,利用落板冲击设备进行了中低速冲击实验,结合有限元分析软件ABAQUS计算出裂纹尖端应力强度因子,利用有限差分软件AUTODYN进行了动态数值模拟研究,并将其模拟结果与实验结果进行对比分析。实验及模拟结果表明:裂纹破坏形态与AUTODYN数值模拟破坏形态基本一致;试件的断裂形态随着两裂纹间距不同而不同;裂纹间的相互影响程度随着裂纹间间距增大而减小;裂纹尖端应力强度因子KI随着裂纹间距的增大而减小,而KII随着裂纹间距增大而增大。  相似文献
