An efficient semi-implicit finite element model is proposed for the simulation of three-dimensional flows in stratified seas. The body of water is divided into a number of layers and the two horizontal momentum equations for each layer of water are first integrated vertically. Nine-node Lagrangian quadratic isoparametric elements are employed for spatial discretization in the horizontal domain. The time derivatives are approximated using a second-order-accurate semi-implicit time-stepping scheme. The distinguishing feature of the proposed numerical scheme is that only nodal values on the same vertical line are coupled. Two test cases for which analytic solutions are available are employed to test the proposed scheme. The test results show that the scheme is efficient and stable. A numerical experiment is also included to compare the proposed scheme with a finite difference scheme.  相似文献

Preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithms for solving 3D Stokes problems by stable piecewise discontinuous pressure finite elements are presented. The emphasis is on the preconditioning schemes and their numerical implementation for use with Hermitian based discontinuous pressure elements. For the piecewise constant discontinuous pressure elements, a variant implementation of the preconditioner proposed by Cahouet and Chabard for the continuous pressure elements is employed. For the piecewise linear discontinuous pressure elements, a new preconditioner is presented. Numerical examples are presented for the cubic lid-driven cavity problem with two representative elements, i.e. the Q2-PO and the Q2-P1 brick elements. Numerical results show that the preconditioning schemes are very effective in reducing the number of pressure iterations at very reasonable costs. It is also shown that they are insensitive to the mesh Reynolds number except for nearly steady flows (Rem → 0) and are almost independent of mesh sizes. It is demonstrated that the schemes perform reasonably well on non-uniform meshes.  相似文献

A time-accurate least-squares finite element method is used to simulate three-dimensional flows in a cubic cavity with a uniform moving top. The time- accurate solutions are obtained by the Crank-Nicolson method for time integration and Newton linearization for the convective terms with extensive linearization steps. A matrix-free algorithm of the Jacobi conjugate gradient method is used to solve the symmetric, positive definite linear system of equations. To show that the least-squares finite element method with the Jacobi conjugate gradient technique has promising potential to provide implicit, fully coupled and time-accurate solutions to large-scale three-dimensional fluid flows, we present results for three-dimensional lid-driven flows in a cubic cavity for Reynolds numbers up to 3200.  相似文献

A novel control volume finite element method with adaptive anisotropic unstructured meshes is presented for three-dimensional three-phase flows with interfacial tension. The numerical framework consists of a mixed control volume and finite element formulation with a new P1DG-P2 elements (linear discontinuous velocity between elements and quadratic continuous pressure between elements). A “volume of fluid” type method is used for the interface capturing, which is based on compressive control volume advection and second-order finite element methods. A force-balanced continuum surface force model is employed for the interfacial tension on unstructured meshes. The interfacial tension coefficient decomposition method is also used to deal with interfacial tension pairings between different phases. Numerical examples of benchmark tests and the dynamics of three-dimensional three-phase rising bubble, and droplet impact are presented. The results are compared with the analytical solutions and previously published experimental data, demonstrating the capability of the present method.  相似文献

A three-dimensional finite element method for the simulation of thermoconvective flows is presented. Vector-parallel performances of some preconditioned conjugate gradient methods are compared for solving both large linear systems and the Stokes problem. As significant examples, numerical experiments on the steady two- and three-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection at high Prandtl number are reported.  相似文献

In this paper, a numerical method, which is about the coupling of continuous and discontinuous Galerkin method based on the splitting scheme, is presented for the calculation of viscoelastic flows of the Oldroyd‐B fluid. The momentum equation is discretized in time by using the Adams‐Bashforth second‐order algorithm, and then decoupled via the splitting approach. Considering the Oldroyd‐B constitutive equation, the second‐order Runge‐Kutta approach is selected to complete the temporal discretization. As for the spatial discretizations, the fundamental purpose is to make the best of finite element method (FEM) and discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method to handle different types of equations. Specifically speaking, for the subequations, FEM is chosen to treat the Poisson and Helmholtz equations, and DG is employed to deal with the nonlinear convective term. In addition, because of the hyperbolic nature, DG is also utilized to discretize the Oldroyd‐B constitutive equation spatially. This coupled method avoids resorting to extra stabilization technique occurred in standard FEM framework even for moderately high values of Weissenberg number and also reduces the complexity compared with unified DG scheme. The Oldroyd‐B model is applied to investigate several typical and challenging benchmarks, such as the 4:1 planar contraction flow and the lid‐driven cavity flow, with a wide range of Weissenberg number to illustrate the feasibility, robustness, and validity of our coupled method.  相似文献

Fluid flow through a significantly compressed elastic tube occurs in a variety of physiological situations. Laboratory experiments investigating such flows through finite lengths of tube mounted between rigid supports have demonstrated that the system is one of great dynamical complexity, displaying a rich variety of self-excited oscillations. The physical mechanisms responsible for the onset of such oscillations are not yet fully understood, but simplified models indicate that energy loss by flow separation, variation in longitudinal wall tension and propagation of fluid elastic pressure waves may all be important. Direct numerical solution of the highly non-linear equations governing even the most simplified two-dimensional models aimed at capturing these basic features requires that both the flow field and the domain shape be determined as part of the solution, since neither is known a priori. To accomplish this, previous algorithms have decoupled the solid and fluid mechanics, solving for each separately and converging iteratively on a solution which satisfies both. This paper describes a finite element technique which solves the incompressible Navier-Stokes equatikons simultaneously with the elastic membrane equations on the flexible boundary. The elastic boundary position is parametized in terms of distances along spines in a manner similar to that which has been used successfully in studies of viscous free surface flows, but here the membrane curvature equation rather than the kinematic boundary condition of vanishing normal velocity is used to determine these diatances and the membrane tension varies with the shear stresses exerted on it by the fluid motions. Bothy the grid and the spine positions adjust in response to membrane deformation, and the coupled fluid and elastic equations are solved by a Newton-Raphson scheme which displays quadratic convergence down to low membrane tensions and extreme states of collapse. Solutions to the steady problem are discussed, along with an indication of how the time-dependent problem might be approached.  相似文献

In the present study, a high-order compact finite-difference lattice Boltzmann method is applied for accurately computing 3-D incompressible flows in the generalized curvilinear coordinates to handle practical and realistic geometries with curved boundaries and nonuniform grids. The incompressible form of the 3-D nineteen discrete velocity lattice Boltzmann method is transformed into the generalized curvilinear coordinates. Herein, a fourth-order compact finite-difference scheme and a fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme are used for the discretization of the spatial derivatives and the temporal term, respectively, in the resulting 3-D nineteen discrete velocity lattice Boltzmann equation to provide an accurate 3-D incompressible flow solver. A high-order spectral-type low-pass compact filtering technique is applied to have a stable solution. All boundary conditions are implemented based on the solution of the governing equations in the 3-D generalized curvilinear coordinates. Numerical solutions of different 3-D benchmark and practical incompressible flow problems are performed to demonstrate the accuracy and performance of the solution methodology presented. Herein, the 2-D cylindrical Couette flow, the decay of a 3-D double shear wave, the cubic lid-driven cavity flow with nonuniform grids, the flow through a square duct with 90° bend and the flow past a sphere at different flow conditions are considered for validating the present computations. Numerical results obtained show the accuracy and robustness of the present solution methodology based on the implementation of the high-order compact finite-difference lattice Boltzman method in the generalized curvilinear coordinates for solving 3-D incompressible flows over practical and realistic geometries.  相似文献

We consider the numerical simulation of conjugate heat transfer, incompressible turbulent flows for multicomponents systems using a stabilized finite element method. We present an immersed volume approach for thermal coupling between fluids and solids for heating high‐alloy steel inside industrial furnaces. It consists in considering a single 3D grid of the furnace and solving one set of equations with different thermal properties. A distance function enables to define precisely the position and the interface of any objects inside the volume and to provide homogeneous physical and thermodynamic properties for each subdomain. An anisotropic mesh adaptation algorithm based on the variations of the distance function is then applied to ensure an accurate capture of the discontinuities that characterize the highly heterogeneous domain. The proposed method demonstrates the capability of the model to simulate an unsteady three‐dimensional heat transfers and turbulent flows in an industrial furnace with the presence of three conducting solid bodies. This paper deals with the stability analysis of internally damped rotating composite shafts. An Euler–Bernoulli shaft finite element formulation based on Equivalent Single Layer Theory (ESLT), including the hysteretic internal damping of composite material and transverse shear effects, is introduced and then used to evaluate the influence of various parameters: stacking sequences, fiber orientations and bearing properties on natural frequencies, critical speeds, and instability thresholds. The obtained results are compared with those available in the literature using different theories. The agreement in the obtained results show that the developed Euler–Bernoulli finite element based on ESLT including hysteretic internal damping and shear transverse effects can be effectively used for the stability analysis of internally damped rotating composite shafts. Furthermore, the results revealed that rotor stability is sensitive to the laminate parameters and to the properties of the bearings.  相似文献

A three-dimensional second-order closure dispersion model is used to simulate the plume behaviour of a passive contaminant in a convective boundary layer. A time-splitting finite element method together with a non-linear filtering scheme is used to solve the three-dimensional second-order closure transport equations. The model results show good agreement with laboratory data for a ground level source.  相似文献

Velocity varies rapidly near sheared boundaries. Therefore in many practical fluid problems it can be inefficient to solve discrete equations with velocity as the dependent variable. Conversely, shear stress varies slowly near sheared boundaries, suggesting that it may be well suited for use as the dependent variable in discrete equations. This paper describes a formulation of the internal mode equations for a three-dimensional hydrodynamic model using shear stress as the dependent variable. The resulting direct stress solution (DSS), coupled with a spatial discretization using linear finite elements, yields a system matrix that can be set up and solved with the efficiency of a banded matrix with bandwidth 8. If the eddy viscosity distribution is assumed to be piecewise linear over the depth (with an arbitrary number of time-varying segments), the recovery of velocity from stress can be easily accomplished in closed form, thereby avoiding any difficulty resulting from the logarithmic singularity in the velocity profile that occurs at a boundary. Results from tidal and wind-driven test cases with realistic boundary layers are used to demonstrate the accuracy and computational advantages of a DSS formulation versus a standard velocity-based formulation.  相似文献

The motivation of this study is to investigate the turbulence–chemistry interactions by using probability density function (PDF) method. A consistent hybrid Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS)/PDF method is used to simulate the turbulent non-reacting and reacting flows. The joint fluctuating velocity–frequency–composition PDF equation coupled with the Reynolds averaged density, momentum and energy equations are solved on unstructured meshes by the Lagrangian Monte Carlo (MC) method combined with the finite volume (FV) method. The simulation of the axisymmetric bluff body stabilized non-reacting flow fields is presented in this paper. The calculated length of the recirculation zone is in good agreement with the experimental data. Moreover, the significant change of the flow pattern with the increase of the jet-to-coflow momentum flux ratio is well predicted. In addition, comparisons are made between the joint PDF model and two different Reynolds stress models. Based on flux-based formulation, a nodeless variable element method is developed to analyze two-dimensional steady-state and transient heat transfer problems. The nodeless variable element employs quadratic interpolation functions to provide higher solution accuracy without necessity to actually generate additional nodes. The flux-based formulation is applied to reduce the complexity in deriving the finite element equations as compared to the conventional finite element method. The solution accuracy is further improved by implementing an adaptive meshing technique to generate finite element mesh that can adapt and move along corresponding to the solution behavior. The technique generates small elements in the regions of steep solution gradients to provide accurate solution, and meanwhile it generates larger elements in the other regions where the solution gradients are slight to reduce the computational time and the computer memory. The effectiveness of the combined procedure is demonstrated by heat transfer problems that have exact solutions. These problems are: (a) a steady-state heat conduction analysis in a square plate subjected to a highly localized surface heating, and (b) a transient heat conduction analysis in a long plate subjected to a moving heat source. Simulation of fabric drape using a thin plate element with finite rotation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The draping behavior of fabric is simulated by using four node quadrilateral thin plate elements with finite rotation. The finite element formulation is based on the total Lagrangian approach. An exact representation of finite rotation is introduced. The strain energy function accounting for the material symmetry is obtained by the tensor representation theory. To avoid shear locking, the assumed strain technique for transverse shear is adopted. The conjugate gradient method with a proposed line search algorithm is employed to minimize energy and reach the final shape of fabric. The draping behavior of a rectangular piece of fabric over a rectangular table is simulated.  相似文献

An incompressible Navier–Stokes solver based on a cell‐centre finite volume formulation for unstructured triangular meshes is developed and tested. The solution methodology makes use of pseudocompressibility, whereby the convective terms are computed using a Godunov‐type second‐order upwind finite volume formulation. The evolution of the solution in time is obtained by subiterating the equations in pseudotime for each physical time step, with the pseudotime step set equal to infinity. For flows with a free surface the computational mesh is fitted to the free surface boundary at each time step, with the free surface elevation satisfying a kinematic boundary condition. A ‘leakage coefficient’, ε, is introduced for the calculation of flows with a free surface in order to control the leakage of flow through the free surface. This allows the assumption of stationarity of mesh points to be made during the course of pseudotime iteration. The solver is tested by comparing the output with a wide range of documented published results, both for flows with and without a free surface. The presented results show that the solver is robust. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
