The massive growth in mobile users and wireless technologies has resulted in increased data traffic and created demand for additional radio spectrum. This growing demand for radio spectrum has resulted in spectrum congestion and mandated the need for coexistence between radar and interfering communication emitters. To address the aforementioned issues, it is critical to review existing policies and evaluate new technologies that can utilize spectrum in an efficient and intelligent manner. Cognitive radio and cognitive radar are two promising technologies that exploit spectrum using dynamic spectrum access techniques. Additionally, introducing the bio-inspired concept ‘metacognition’ in a cognitive process has shown to increase the effectiveness and robustness of the cognitive radio and cognitive radar system. Metacognition is a high-order thinking agent that monitors and regulates the cognition process through a feedback and control process called the perception–action cycle. Extensive research has been done in the field of spectrum sensing in cognitive radio and spectral coexistence between radar and communication systems. This paper provides a detailed classification of spectrum sensing schemes and explains how dynamic spectrum access strategies share the spectrum between radar and communication systems. In addition to this, the fundamentals of cognitive radio, its architecture, spectrum management framework, and metacognition concept in radar are discussed. Furthermore, this paper presents various research issues, challenges, and future research directions associated with spectrum sensing in cognitive radar and dynamic spectrum access strategies in cognitive radar.  相似文献

Cognitive radio (CR) technology seems to be a promising candidate for solving the radio frequency (RF) spectrum occupancy problem. CRs strive to utilize the white holes in the RF spectrum in an opportunistic manner. Because interference is an inherent and a very critical design parameter for all sorts of wireless communication systems, many of the recently emerging wireless technologies prefer smaller size coverage with reduced transmit power in order to decrease interference. Prominent examples of short-range communication systems trying to achieve low interference power levels are CR relays in CR networks and femtocells in next generation wireless networks (NGWNs). It is clear that a comprehensive interference model including mobility is essential especially in elaborating the performance of such short-range communication scenarios. Therefore, in this study, a physical layer interference model in a mobile radio communication environment is investigated by taking into account all of the basic propagation mechanisms such as large- and small-scale fading under a generic single primary user (PU) and single secondary user (SU) scenario. Both one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) random walk models are incorporated into the physical layer signal model. The analysis and corresponding numerical results are given along with the relevant discussions.  相似文献

Today’s society is driven by ever-growing information needs, which cause increased demand for ubiquitous and very high speed wireless communications. In search for the urgent need of improved coverage and capacity, cellular networks are currently undergoing a major transformation from an architecture comprised of thoroughly planned macrocell base stations (MBSs) to a much more heterogeneous architecture where the macrocell network is underlaid by one or several tiers of unevenly deployed small cells. However, this new set of technologies is not exempt of several challenges. Backhaul is still an unresolved issue, i.e. which is the best technology for the small cell to reach the core network. In the case of uncoordinated co-channel deployments where the macrocell and small cell tier share the spectrum (e.g. femtocells or metrocells), the interference is also a major problem. In this paper, a new concept and architecture called femtorelays is introduced as a novel solution for next generation small cell problems. A femtorelay is a small cell access point that enables improved cellular coverage within indoor environments while increasing the overall system capacity through spatial frequency reuse. Working as an open-access small cell, it provides dual-backhaul connectivity to the core network for registered and unregistered users. One of the backhaul connections is the internet-based, and the second one is the relay-based operating on the spectrum owned by the wireless carrier. The radio interference between the macrocell and the small cell is overcome by servicing the macrocell interfering users at the femtorelay. Unlike the traffic from subscribers, this traffic will be forwarded to the network through the relay-based backhaul. The internal architecture, the approach employed to make the technology fit in existing networks, and future evolution of the basic femtorelays for larger scenarios are also presented. Finally, performance results show the potential of this technology to outperform other existing solutions.  相似文献

Cognitive radio, as a key technology to improve the utilization of radio spectrum, acquired much attention. Moreover, spectrum sensing has an irreplaceable position in the field of cognitive radio and was widely studied. The convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and the gate recurrent unit (GRU) are complementary in their modelling capabilities. In this paper, we introduce a CNN-GRU network to obtain the local information for single-node spectrum sensing, in which CNN is used to extract spatial feature and GRU is used to extract the temporal feature. Then, the combination network receives the features extracted by the CNN-GRU network to achieve multifeatures combination and obtains the final cooperation result. The cooperative spectrum sensing scheme based on Multifeatures Combination Network enhances the sensing reliability by fusing the local information from different sensing nodes. To accommodate the detection of multiple types of signals, we generated 8 kinds of modulation types to train the model. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the cooperative spectrum sensing algorithm proposed in this paper improved detection performance with no prior knowledge about the information of primary user or channel state. Our proposed method achieved competitive performance under the condition of large dynamic signal-to-noise ratio.  相似文献

The rapidly increasing number of mobile devices, voluminous data, and higher data rate are pushing to rethink the current generation of the cellular mobile communication. The next or fifth generation (5G) cellular networks are expected to meet high-end requirements. The 5G networks are broadly characterized by three unique features: ubiquitous connectivity, extremely low latency, and very high-speed data transfer. The 5G networks would provide novel architectures and technologies beyond state-of-the-art architectures and technologies. In this paper, our intent is to find an answer to the question: “what will be done by 5G and how?” We investigate and discuss serious limitations of the fourth generation (4G) cellular networks and corresponding new features of 5G networks. We identify challenges in 5G networks, new technologies for 5G networks, and present a comparative study of the proposed architectures that can be categorized on the basis of energy-efficiency, network hierarchy, and network types. Interestingly, the implementation issues, e.g., interference, QoS, handoff, security–privacy, channel access, and load balancing, hugely effect the realization of 5G networks. Furthermore, our illustrations highlight the feasibility of these models through an evaluation of existing real-experiments and testbeds.  相似文献

Reputation-based network selection mechanism using game theory   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Current and future wireless environments are based on the coexistence of multiple networks supported by various access technologies deployed by different operators. As wireless network deployments increase, their usage is also experiencing a significant growth. In this heterogeneous multi-technology multi-application multi-terminal multi-user environment users will be able to freely connect to any of the available access technologies. Network selection mechanisms will be required in order to keep mobile users “always best connected” anywhere and anytime. In such a heterogeneous environment, game theory techniques can be adopted in order to understand and model competitive or cooperative scenarios between rational decision makers. In this work we propose a theoretical framework for combining reputation-based systems, game theory and network selection mechanism. We define a network reputation factor which reflects the network’s previous behaviour in assuring service guarantees to the user. Using the repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma game, we model the user–network interaction as a cooperative game and we show that by defining incentives for cooperation and disincentives against defecting on service guarantees, repeated interaction sustains cooperation.  相似文献

The recent strides in vehicular networks have emerged as a convergence of multi radio access networks having different user preferences, multiple application requirements and multiple device types. In future Cognitive Radio (CR) vehicular networks deployment, multiple radio access networks may coexist in the overlapping areas having different characteristics in terms of multiple attributes. Hence, it becomes a challenge for CR vehicular node to select the optimal network for the spectrum handoff decision. A game theoretic auction theory approach is interdisciplinary effective approach to select the optimal network for spectrum handoff. The competition between different CR vehicular node and access networks can be formulated as multi-bidder bidding to provide its services to CR vehicular node. The game theory is the branch of applied mathematics which make intelligent decision to select the optimal alternative from predetermined alternatives. Hence, this paper investigates a spectrum handoff scheme for optimal network selection using game theoretic auction theory approach in CR vehicular networks. The paper has also proposed a new cost function based multiple attribute decision making method which outperforms other existing methods. Numerical results revel that the proposed scheme is effective for spectrum handoff for optimal network selection among multiple available networks.  相似文献

As the data traffic is increasing, the spectrum bands are getting congested. It causes low latency and unreliable communication. Additional spectrum can be utilized to solve this problem but moving towards higher frequency means higher power requirement and increased cost. Cognitive radio network is another solution to this problem. It helps the nodes of a network to use the channels of the nearby bands which are not being used at that time. However, it has several challenges. One of these challenges is the transmission collision with the primary users of the network. Researchers have been working on this problem. However, it is still a major concern for the researchers. This paper proposes an algorithm that selects the optimal cognitive channel for the data transmission by the secondary user in such a way so that the transmission collision with the PU is minimized. After comparison with the existing latest similar protocol, the proposed protocol has shown 5.6% improvement in the throughput, 5.3% improvement in PDR. The delay is decreased by 0.6% and the transmission collision with PUs is reduced by 2.5%.  相似文献

Cognitive Radio (CR) networks are envisioned as a key empowering technology of the fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication networks, which solves the major issues of 5G, like high-speed data transmission, seamless connectivity, and increased demand for mobile data. Another significant characteristic of the 5G network is green communications, as energy consumption from the communication field is predicted to rise remarkably by the year 2030. In this work, we are concerned about energy-related issues and propose a cooperation-based energy-aware reward scheme (CEAR) for next-generation green CR networks. The proposed CEAR scheme is based on the antenna and temporal diversity of the primary users (PUs). For providing the service to the PUs, the users of another network called cognitive users (CUs) work as a cooperative relay node, and, in return, they get more spectrum access opportunities as a reward from the primary network. The CUs with delay-tolerant data packets take a cooperative decision by recognizing the availability and traffic load of PUs, channel state information, and data transmission requirements. We utilize the optimal stopping protocol for solving the decision-making problem and use the backward induction method to obtain the optimal cooperative solution. The simulation results reveal notable enhancements in energy efficiency (EE) of CUs compared with other cooperative schemes. The proposed CEAR scheme is more energy-efficient for ultra-dense network deployment because results show that the CU’s EE, spectral efficiency (SE), and throughput improved with the increase of PUs.  相似文献

After successful dynamic spectrum access, cognitive radio (CR) must be able to relay the message/packets to the destination node by utilizing existing primary system(s) (PS) and/or cooperative/cognitive radio nodes in the cognitive radio network. In this paper, we pioneer the exploration of the fundamental behaviors of interference between CRs and PS in such a relay network via network coding. Interference on PS’s network capacity is shown to be unavoidable and unbounded in the one-hop relay network. Extending to the tandem structure, interference is unbounded but avoidable by appropriate constraints. In cooperative relay network, interference is bounded and avoidable. Moreover, parallel cooperative relay network can accommodate more CR transmission pairs. Such an analysis can be generalized to arbitrary networks. We derive that interference is avoidable when at least one route from CR’s source to the sink bypasses the bottlenecks of PS. Then under the constraint of no interference to PS, we derive CR’s maximum network capacity in such a network. Link allocation to achieve the maximum network capacity can be formulated and solved as a linear programming problem. Consequently, given any network topology, we can determine whether CR’s interference is avoidable, and maximize CR’s network capacity without interfering PS’s network capacity. Simulation results on randomly generated network topologies show that CR’s network capacity achieves on average 1.3 times of PS’s network capacity with interference avoidance constraint, and demonstrates spectrum efficiency at networking throughput and high availability.  相似文献

The use of communication networks relying on millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless links promises a great capacity enhancement as well as improved security. However, given the high-directivity of mm-wave links, coverage requirements are difficult to meet unless the network is assisted by an infrastructure. Given its low-cost, power-efficiency, and high capacity, radio over fiber has emerged as a strong candidate for the implementation of such infrastructure. Among the different generation techniques, photonic heterodyning has attracted considerable attention due to its capacity to generate radio frequency (RF) signals in the entire microwave/mm-wave range without requiring broadband electro-optical modulator. However, the RF signals generated using these techniques suffer from significant phase noise, a major impairment that degrades the system performance. In this paper we study two approaches to overcome this limitation: (1) the use of optical sideband injection locking (OSBIL) to generate tones with highly correlated phase noise and (2) heterodyning independent lasers in combination with a mobile terminal (MT) that is insensitive to the phase of the RF signal. A qualitative comparison between the two techniques in terms of MT sensitivity to the RF phase noise, the power sensitivity, and base station power efficiency leads to the conclusion that OSBIL is more suitable for networks with medium-range node separation, whereas heterodyning of independent laser with phase-insensitive MT is a cost-efficient solution for networks where nodes are closer to each other.  相似文献

We consider the problem of interference management and resource allocation in a cognitive radio network (CRNs) where the licensed spectrum holders (primary users) share their spare capacity with the non-licensed spectrum holders (secondary users). Under such shared spectrum usage the transmissions of the secondary users should have a minimal impact on the quality of service (QoS) and the operating conditions of the primary users. Therefore, it is important to distinguish the two types of users, and formulate the problem of resource allocation considering hard restrictions on the user-perceived QoS (such as packet end-to-end delay and loss) and physical-layer channel characteristics (such as noise and interference) of the primary users. To achieve this goal, we propose to assign the bandwidth and transmission power to minimize the total buffer occupancy in the system subject to capacity constraints, queue stability constraints, and interference requirements of the primary users. We apply this approach for resource allocation in a CRN built upon a Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) long-term evolution (LTE) standard platform. Performance of the algorithm is evaluated using simulations in OPNET environment. The algorithm shows consistent performance improvement when compared with other relevant resource allocation techniques.  相似文献

Since cognitive radio (CR) networks could solve the spectrum scarcity problem, they have drawn much research in recent years. Artificial intelligence(AI) is introduced into CRs to learn from and adapt to their environment. Nonetheless, AI brings in a new kind of attacks specific to CR networks. The most powerful one is a self-propagating AI virus. And no spreading properties specific to this virus have been reported in the literature. To fill this research gap, we propose a virus spreading model of an AI virus by considering the characteristics of CR networks and the behavior of CR users. Several important observations are made from the simulation results based on the model. Firstly, the time taken to infect the whole network increases exponentially with the network size. Based on this result, CR network designers could calculate the optimal network size to slow down AI virus propagation rate. Secondly, the anti-virus performance of static networks to an AI virus is better than dynamic networks. Thirdly, if the CR devices with the highest degree are initially infected, the AI virus propagation rate will be increased substantially. Finally, it is also found that in the area with abundant spectrum resource, the AI virus propagation speed increases notably but the variability of the spectrum does not affect the propagation speed much.  相似文献

Deployment of small cells over the existing cellular network is an effective solution to improve the system coverage and throughput of fifth generation (5G) mobile communication networks. The arrival of the 5G mobile networks have demonstrated the importance of advanced scheduling techniques to manage the limited frequency spectrum available while achieving 5G transmission requirements. Cellular networks of the future necessitate the formulation of efficient resource allocation schemes that mitigate the interference between the different cells. In this research work, we formulate an optimization problem for heterogenous networks (HetNets) for resource allocation to maximize the system throughput among the cell center users (CCUs) and cell edge users (CEUs). We solve the optimization problem by effective utilization of the weight factors distribution for resource allocation. A novel Utility-based Resource Scheduling Algorithm (URSA) optimizes the resource sharing among the users with better delay budget of each application. The designed URSA ameliorates fairness along with reduced cross layer interference for real and non-real time applications. Performance of the URSA has been evaluated and compared most relevant state of art algorithms using the matlab based simulators. Furthermore, simulation results validate the superiority of the proposed scheduling scheme against conventional techniques in terms of throughput, fairness, and spectral efficiency.  相似文献

The explosion of mobile traffic and highly dynamic property often make it increasingly stressful for a cellular service provider to provide sufficient cellular spectrum resources to support the dynamic change of traffic demand in a day. In this paper, considering the dynamic characteristic of the cellular network traffic demand, we not only proposed an optimal, truthful reverse auction incentive framework, but also proposed a valuation function which is based on third-party access points’ capacity. We consider spectrum sharing in a third-party network where several secondary users (SUs) share spectrum with a primary user (PU). A leakage-based beamforming algorithm is proposed via game theory to maximize the sum utility of third-party access points subject to the signal-to-leakage-and-noise (SLNR) constraint of SUs and PU interference constraint. The sum throughput maximization problem is formulated as a non-cooperative game, where the SUs compete with each other over the resources. Nash equilibrium is considered as the solution of this game. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve a high sum throughput and converge to a locally optimal beamforming vector.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider an ad hoc network overlaying a legacy time-division multiple access (TDMA) system. This kind of ad hoc and infrastructure-based coexisting architecture can have an important application for the future cognitive radio (CR) network. To establish an overlaying ad hoc network in the presence of primary users, the medium access control (MAC) protocol shall achieve high spectrum utilization, avoid interfering the primary user and establish the link quickly. To this end, we propose four enhanced mechanisms for the carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) MAC protocol: (1) a neighbor list establishment mechanism for recognizing spectrum usage opportunities, (2) a set of contention resolution methods to reduce the collision and delay variance, (3) an invited reservation procedure for meeting the delay requirements of real-time traffic, and (4) a distributed frame synchronization mechanism for coordinating transmission without a centralized controller. Compared to the legacy IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol, the proposed CSMA/CA MAC protocol enhancement can improve the system throughput by 50% through analysis and NS-2 simulations, while keeping the dropping rate lower than 2% for delay-sensitive traffic. Furthermore, the standard deviation of the access delay is reduced by five times. With these QoS enhanced mechanisms, the proposed cognitive CSMA/CA MAC protocol can allow an ad hoc network to coexist with the legacy TDMA system.  相似文献

Spectrum scarcity is impeding practical implementations of emerging wireless multimedia applications requiring significantly more frequency spectrum. Cognitive radio (CR) has emerged as a promising solution to the current spectral congestion problem by imparting intelligence to the conventional software defined radio that allows spectrum sharing through opportunistic spectrum access. The principal objective of CR is to optimize the use of under-utilized spectrum through robust and efficient spectrum sensing (SS). This paper introduces cognitive functionality and provides an in-depth comparative survey of various spectrum awareness techniques in terms of their sensing accuracy and computational complexities along with their merits and demerits. Specifically, key challenges in SS are highlighted and possible solutions are discussed. A classification of SS is presented to address the sensing method selection criterion. Both non-cooperative and cooperative sensing schemes are reviewed and open research problems are highlighted to identify future research directions.  相似文献
