The plastic viscosities of five production batches of a nonthixotropic pseudoplasticGestetner 217 type emulsion duplicating ink were determined at 40 RPM (700 sec–1) using aFerranti-Shirley cone-plate viscometer. The activation energiesE were determined from the slope of anArrhenius plot over the range of 1/2 °C to 40 °C. The value ofE was not affected by batch-to-batch variations.Working with one ink only, the same procedure was then applied to shear rates from 5 to 220 RPM (87.5 to 3850 sec–1) over the same temperature range.E was found to be constant below about 60 RPM (1000 sec–1) but dropped rapidly with increasing shear rate above that threshold. A plot ofE vs. In shear rate gave a straight line parallel to the shear rate axis, intersected by a second straight line with a negative slope. The value ofE corresponding to the point of intersection is denotedE L , the limiting activation energy of viscoelastic flow in a rotational shear field.It is suggested that the rate of shear corresponding toE L is that necessary to eliminate the last traces of slippage flow in the system and to convert it to 100% laminar flow. A radiation crosslinked model linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) exhibits power-law relaxation,G(t) =St –n at its gel point (GP). The relaxation exponent has a value of about 0.46. The relaxation behavior is dominated by power laws, not only directly at GP, but in a very broad vicinity of GP and in a frequency window, which narrows with distance from the gel point. The power law exponent decreases with increasing radiation dose (increasing extent of crosslinking). Independent measurements of the gel fraction and the molecular-weight distribution of the radiated samples' soluble fraction support the rheological observations.Delivered as a Keynote Lecture at the Golden Jubilee Conference of the British Society of Rheology and Third European Rheology Conference, Edinburgh, 3–7 September, 1990.  相似文献

Hydromagnetic flow between two porous disks rotating with same angular velocity Ω about two noncoincident axes has been studied in the presence of a uniform transverse magnetic field. An exact solution of the governing equations has been obtained in a closed form. It is found that the primary velocity f/Ωl increases and the secondary velocity g/Ωl decreases with increase in either Reynolds number Re or the Hartman number M. It is also found that the torque at the disk η= 0 increases with increase in either M^2 or K^2. On the other hand there is no torque at the disk η= 1 for large M^2 and K^2. The heat transfer characteristic has also been studied on taking viscous and Joule dissipation into account. It is seen that the temperature increases with increase in either M^2 or K^2. It is found that the rate of heat transfer at the disk η= 0 increases with increase in either M or K. On the other hand the rate of heat transfer at the disk η= 1 increases with increase in K but decreases with increase in M.  相似文献

Understanding the radiation embrittlement of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels is required to be able to operate safely a nuclear power plant or to extend its lifetime. The mechanical properties degradation is partly due to the clustering of solute under irradiation. To gain knowledge about the clustering process, a Fe−1.1 Mn−0.7 Ni (at.%) alloy was irradiated in a test reactor at two fluxes of 0.15 and 9 ×1017 n E > 1MeV .m − 2.s − 1 and at increasing doses from 0.18 to 1.3 ×1024 n E > 1MeV .m − 2 at 300°C. Atom probe tomography (APT) experiments revealed that the irradiation promotes the formation in the α iron matrix of Mn/Mn and/or Ni/Ni pair correlations at low dose and Mn–Ni enriched clusters at high dose. These clusters dissolve partially after a thermal treatment at 400°C. Based on a comparison with thermodynamic calculations, we show that the solute clustering under irradiation can just result from an induced mechanism.  相似文献

Rheo-dielectric behavior was examined for 4−4n-octyl-cyanobiphenyl (8CB) having large dipoles parallel to its principal axis (in the direction of the C≡N bond). In the quiescent state at all temperatures (T) examined, orientational fluctuation of the 8CB molecules was observed as dielectric dispersions at characteristic frequencies ωc>106 s−1. In the isotropic state at high T, no detectable changes of the complex dielectric constant ɛ*(ω) were found under slow flow at shear rates ˙γ≫ωc. In the nematic state at intermediate T, the terminal relaxation intensity of ɛ*(ω) was decreased under such slow flow. In the smectic state at lower T, the flow effect became much less significant. These results were related to the flow-induced changes of the liquid crystalline textures in the nematic and smectic states, and the differences of the rheo-dielectric behavior in these states are discussed in relation to a difference of the symmetry of molecular arrangements in the nematic and smectic textures. The transport equations for the second-order velocity structure functions 〈(δu)2〉 and 〈(δq)2〉 are used as a scale-by-scale budget to quantify the effect of initial conditions at low Reynolds numbers, typical of grid turbulence. The validity of these equations is first investigated via hot-wire measurements of velocity and transverse vorticity fluctuations. The transport equation for 〈(δq)2〉 is shown to be balanced at all scales, while anisotropy of the large scales leads to a significant imbalance in the equation for 〈(δu)2〉. The effect of using similarity to evaluate the transport equation is rigorously tested. This approach has the desirable benefit of requiring less extensive measurements to calculate the inhomogeneous term of the transport equation. The similarity form of the 〈(δq)2〉 equation produces nearly identical results as those obtained without the similarity assumption. In the case of the 〈(δu)2〉 equation, the similarity method forces a balance at large separation, although the imbalance due to large scale anisotropy remains. The initial conditions of the turbulence at constant R M ≃ 10,400 (28≤ R λ≤ 55) are changed by using three grids of different geometries. Initial conditions affect the shape and magnitude of the second- and third-order structure functions, as well as the anisotropy of the large scales. The effect of initial conditions on the scale-by-scale budget is restricted to the inhomogeneous term of the transport equations, while the dissipation term remains unaffected despite the low R λ. Scales as small as λ are affected by the changes in initial conditions.  相似文献

The ultra-low Reynolds number airfoil wake   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Lift force and the near wake of an NACA 0012 airfoil were measured over the angle (α) of attack of 0°–90° and the chord Reynolds number (Re c ), 5.3 × 103–5.1 × 104, with a view to understand thoroughly the near wake of the airfoil at low- to ultra-low Re c . While the lift force is measured using a load cell, the detailed flow structure is captured using laser-Doppler anemometry, particle image velocimetry, and laser-induced fluorescence flow visualization. It has been found that the stall of an airfoil, characterized by a drop in the lift force, occurs at Re c  ≥ 1.05 × 104 but is absent at Re c  = 5.3 × 103. The observation is connected to the presence of the separation bubble at high Re c but absence of the bubble at ultra-low Re c , as evidenced in our wake measurements. The near-wake characteristics are examined and discussed in detail, including the vortex formation length, wake width, spanwise vorticity, wake bubble size, wavelength of K–H vortices, Strouhal numbers, and their dependence on α and Re c .  相似文献

The streamwise evolution of an inclined circular cylinder wake was investigated by measuring all three velocity and vorticity components using an eight-hotwire vorticity probe in a wind tunnel at a Reynolds number Red of 7,200 based on free stream velocity (U ) and cylinder diameter (d). The measurements were conducted at four different inclination angles (α), namely 0°, 15°, 30°, and 45° and at three downstream locations, i.e., x/d = 10, 20, and 40 from the cylinder. At x/d = 10, the effects of α on the three coherent vorticity components are negligibly small for α ≤ 15°. When α increases further to 45°, the maximum of coherent spanwise vorticity reduces by about 50%, while that of the streamwise vorticity increases by about 70%. Similar results are found at x/d = 20, indicating the impaired spanwise vortices and the enhancement of the three-dimensionality of the wake with increasing α. The streamwise decay rate of the coherent spanwise vorticity is smaller for a larger α. This is because the streamwise spacing between the spanwise vortices is bigger for a larger α, resulting in a weak interaction between the vortices and hence slower decaying rate in the streamwise direction. For all tested α, the coherent contribution to [`(v2)] \overline{{v^{2}}} is remarkable at x/d = 10 and 20 and significantly larger than that to [`(u2)] \overline{{u^{2}}} and [`(w2)]. \overline{{w^{2}}}. This contribution to all three Reynolds normal stresses becomes negligibly small at x/d = 40. The coherent contribution to [`(u2)] \overline{{u^{2}}} and [`(v2)] \overline{{v^{2}}} decays slower as moving downstream for a larger α, consistent with the slow decay of the coherent spanwise vorticity for a larger α.  相似文献

The viscoelastic characteristics of the blends of poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (PMMA/SAN) were investigated at various temperatures below, near, and above the phase separation temperature. The investigated polymer system is characterized by a lower critical solution temperature. Rheological behavior of the blends in the region of a phase separation was compared with change of the light scattering intensity. The presence of nanofillers in the blend results in that the phase separation occurs at a higher temperature. At the isothermal conditions, the phase separation begins earlier and proceeds with a higher rate as compared with the same blend without filler. The results of the study show the considerable change of the viscoelastic characteristics of PMMA/SAN when the polymer system passes from the homogeneous state to the heterogeneous one. Such characteristics as the dependence of the storage modulus (G ) on the loss modulus (G ), the dependence of the loss viscosity (η ) on the dynamic viscosity (η ), the dependences of the complex viscosity (η*), and the free volume fraction (f) on the blend composition are the most sensitive to the phase separation. The phase separation affects the characteristics G (ω), where ω is the frequency only in a low-frequency range. Temperatures of phase separation were estimated using dependence G (T) at ω, which is the constant in the range of low frequencies.  相似文献

It is proved that the negatively curved set M on a nonparametric surface M of constant mean curvature in ℝ3 must extend to the boundary ∂M, if M is nonempty. For M parametric, if M is compactly included in the interior of M, then M is at least as large as an extremal domain. Linear theory is applied to examine rotation and buoyancy effects on homogeneous turbulent shear flows with given vertical velocity shear, S=d/dx 3. In the rotating shear case (where the rotation vector is perpendicular to the plane of the mean flow, Ω i =Ωδ i 2), general solutions for the Fourier components of the fluctuating velocity are proposed. These solutions are compared with those proposed in the literature for the Fourier components of the fluctuating velocity and density in the case of a homogeneous stratified shear flow with vertical density gradient, S ρ=d/dx 3. It is shown that from the normal mode stability stand point the Bradshaw parameter B=2Ω/S(1+2Ω/S) (in the rotating shear case) and the Richardson number R i (in the statified shear case) play similar roles in identifying the stability for all the wave components except in the case where Ω·k=0, for which rotation has no effects on the flow. Analysis of the long-time behavior of the non-dimensional spectral density of energy, e g , is carried out. In the stable case, e g has decaying oscillations or undergoes a power law decay in time. Analytical solutions for the streamwise two-dimensional energy ℰ ii 1/2 (i.e. the limit at k 1=0 of the one-dimensional energy spectra) are proposed. At large time, ℰ ii 1(t)/ℰ ii 1(0) oscillates around the value (3R i +1)/(4R i ) except at R i =1 it stays constant in time. Similar behavior for ℰ ii 1(t)/ℰ ii 1(0) is also observed in the rotating shear case (ℰ ii 1(t)/ℰ ii 1(0) oscillates around the value (1+4B)/(4B)). Due to the behavior of the dimensionless spectral density of energy in both flow cases, the turbulent kinetic energy, /2, the production rate, ?, and the rate due to the buoyancy forces, ℬ, are split into two parts, , ?=?1+?2, ℬ=ℬ1+ℬ2 (in the stratified shear case, both ?1 and ℬ1 vanish when R i >?, while in the rotating shear case one has ℬ=0). It is shown that when rotation is “cyclonic” (i.e. Ω/S>0), part reaches maximum magnitudes at St ≈2, independent of the B value, and the first time to a zero crossing of ?2 occurs at this particular value. When rotation is “anticyclonic” (i.e. Ω/S<0) one finds St ≈1.6 instead of St ≈2. In the stratified shear case, both ?2 and ℬ2 cross zero at Nt=St ≈2, and part reaches maximum magnitudes at this particular value. These results and in particular those for the turbulent kinetic energy are compared with previous direct numerical simulation (DNS) results in homogeneous stratified shear flows. This work studies the asymptotic stress and displacement fields near the tip of a stationary crack in an elastic–plastic nonhomogeneous material with the emphasis on the effect of material nonhomogeneities on the dominance of the crack tip field. While the HRR singular field still prevails near the crack tip if the material properties are continuous and piecewise continuously differentiable, a simple asymptotic analysis shows that the size of the HRR dominance zone decreases with increasing magnitude of material property gradients. The HRR field dominates at points that satisfy |α−1 ∂α/∂xδ|1/r, |α−12α/(∂xδxγ)|1/r2, |n−1n/∂xδ|1/[r|ln(r/A)|] and |n−12n/(∂xδxγ)|1/[r2|ln(r/A)|], in addition to other general requirements for asymptotic solutions, where α is a material property in the Ramberg–Osgood model, n is the strain hardening exponent, r is the distance from the crack tip, xδ are Cartesian coordinates, and A is a length parameter. For linear hardening materials, the crack tip field dominates at points that satisfy |Etan−1Etan/∂xδ|1/r, |Etan−12Etan/(∂xδxγ)|1/r2, |E−1E/∂xδ|1/r, and |E−12E/(∂xδxγ)|1/r2, where Etan is the tangent modulus and E is Young’s modulus.  相似文献

Summary Saliva is a complex biological fluid that cannot be effectively studied by conventional methods such as theFerranti-Shirley Viscometer. Testing with theWeissenberg Rheogoniometer shows that saliva is viscoelastic and that the dynamic viscosity falls from 400-0.1 Poise over the frequency range 2.5×10–3 to 10 Hertz. The calculated elastic contribution can be correlated with dry weight content.Dynamic viscosity and shear modulus are both reduced in storage, by proteolytic enzymes. The mucolytic agent Ascoxal also brings about a reduction in these parameters but by a different mechanism. A comparison of the results with those obtained previously for sputum, shows, that saliva may be a suitable model system for assessing mucolytic agentsin vitro.
Zusammenfassung Speichel ist eine komplexe biologische Flüssigkeit, die mit konventionellen Methoden, wie z. B. demFerranti-Shirley-Viskosimeter, nicht umfassend untersucht werden kann. Studien mit einemWeissenberg-Rheogoniometer zeigen, daß Speichel viskoelastisch ist und daß seine dynamische Viskosität über einen Frequenzbereich von 2,5 · 10–3 bis 10 Hz von 400 Poise auf 0,1 Poise fällt. Die berechnete elastische Komponente kann mit dem Trockengewichtsanteil korreliert werden.Dynamische Viskosität und Schermodul werden gemeinsam bei Lagerung von proteolytischen Enzymen reduziert. Das mukolytisch aktive Ascoxal reduziert auf andere Art ebenfalls diese Parameter. Ein Vergleich dieser Ergebnisse mit denen, die für Sputum erhalten werden, zeigt, daß Speichel ein günstiges Modellsystem ist, um mukolytisch aktive Stoffe in vitro zu testen.

Linear viscoelastic properties of SiO2/(AP/EP) suspension with various SiO2 volume fractions (ϕ) in a blend of acrylic polymer (AP) and epoxy (EP) were investigated at various temperatures (T). The AP/EP contained 70 vol.% of EP. The SiO2 particles were treated with epoxy silane coupling agent. The effects of the SiO2 particles are more pronounced in the terminal zone: a transition from viscoelastic liquid (ϕ ≤ 30 vol.%) to viscoelastic solid (ϕ ≥ 40 vol.%) was observed which can be interpreted as a critical gelation occurring at a critical particle content and critical gel temperature. The SiO2/(AP/EP) systems exhibited a critical gel behavior at ϕ ≅ 35 vol.% and T ≅ 100°C characterized with a power–law relationship between the storage and loss moduli (G and G ) and frequency (ω); G  = G /tan(/2) ∝ ω n . The critical gel exponent (n) was estimated to be about 0.45. The gelation occurred with increasing T.  相似文献

The fatigue crack growth characteristics of CrlMo steel have been investigated at 861 K over the R-ratio range 0.1–0.7 utilising a dwell time of 10 min. at maximum load. All tests were conducted under load control in a laboratory air environment. It was established that the R-ratio significantly affected the fatigue crack extension behaviour inasmuch that with increasing R-ratio, the critical ΔK level for the onset of creep fatigue interactive growth, ΔKIG, decreased from 20 to 7 MPa√m and the threshold stress intensity, ΔKth, decreased from 9 to about 3 MPa√m. At intermediate ΔK levels, i.e. between ΔKth and ΔKIG, the fatigue crack extension rates, for all R-ratio values, resided on or slightly below the CTOD line, which represents the upper bound for contrnuum controlled fatigue crack growth. Creep fatigue interactive growth was typified by crack extension rates that reside above the CTOD line with a ΔKIG dependence; the attainment of some critical creep condition or crack linkage condition which causes the abrupt change in crack extension behaviour at ΔKIG; and crack extension occurs almost exclusively in an intergranular manner. The R-ratio and ΔKIG followed a linear relation. A literature review concerning the effect of temperature on the threshold fatigue crack growth characteristics of low alloy ferritic steels demonstrated powerful effects of temperature; the magnitude of these effects, however, were dependent upon the testing temperature regime and R-ratio level. The effect of R-ratio on ΔKth was greatest at temperatures >400°C, significant at ambient temperatures and least in the temperature range 90°C to <300°C. The relationship between temperature and ΔKth, at a given R-ratio, exhibited a through and a minimum ΔKth value was observed in the temperature range 200–250°C. The magnitude of the temperature effects on ΔKth decreased with increasing R-ratio. Such effects of temperature and R-ratio on ΔKth was reasonably explained in terms of crack closure effects. Finally, the present elevated temperature fatigue crack growth data exhibited massive crack extension enhancement values when compared to ambient near-threshold fatigue crack growth data for CrlMo steel. Such large enhancement values were the combined effects of temperature (environment) and frequency.  相似文献

These experiments, involving the transverse oscillations of an elastically mounted rigid cylinder at very low mass and damping, have shown that there exist two distinct types of response in such systems, depending on whether one has a low combined mass-damping parameter (low m*ζ), or a high mass-damping (highm*ζ ). For our low m*ζ, we find three modes of response, which are denoted as an initial amplitude branch, an upper branch and a lower branch. For the classical Feng-type response, at highm*ζ , there exist only two response branches, namely the initial and lower branches. The peak amplitude of these vibrating systems is principally dependent on the mass-damping (m*ζ), whereas the regime of synchronization (measured by the range of velocity U*) is dependent primarily on the mass ratio, m*ζ. At low (m*ζ), the transition between initial and upper response branches involves a hysteresis, which contrasts with the intermittent switching of modes found, using the Hilbert transform, for the transition between upper–lower branches. A 180° jump in phase angle φ is found only when the flow jumps between the upper–lower branches of response. The good collapse of peak-amplitude data, over a wide range of mass ratios (m*=1–20), when plotted against (m*+CA) ζ in the “Griffin” plot, demonstrates that the use of a combined parameter is valid down to at least (m*+CA)ζ 0·006. This is two orders of magnitude below the “limit” that had previously been stipulated in the literature, (m*+CA) ζ>0·4. Using the actual oscillating frequency (f) rather than the still-water natural frequency (fN), to form a normalized velocity (U*/f*), also called “true” reduced velocity in recent studies, we find an excellent collapse of data for a set of response amplitude plots, over a wide range of mass ratiosm* . Such a collapse of response plots cannot be predicted a priori, and appears to be the first time such a collapse of data sets has been made in free vibration. The response branches match very well the Williamson–Roshko (Williamson & Roshko 1988) map of vortex wake patterns from forced vibration studies. Visualization of the modes indicates that the initial branch is associated with the 2S mode of vortex formation, while the Lower branch corresponds with the 2P mode. Simultaneous measurements of lift and drag have been made with the displacement, and show a large amplification of maximum, mean and fluctuating forces on the body, which is not unexpected. It is possible to simply estimate the lift force and phase using the displacement amplitude and frequency. This approach is reasonable only for very low m*.  相似文献

We obtain the linear viscoelastic shear moduli of complex fluids from the time-dependent mean square displacement, <Δr 2(t)>, of thermally-driven colloidal spheres suspended in the fluid using a generalized Stokes–Einstein (GSE) equation. Different representations of the GSE equation can be used to obtain the viscoelastic spectrum, G˜(s), in the Laplace frequency domain, the complex shear modulus, G *(ω), in the Fourier frequency domain, and the stress relaxation modulus, G r (t), in the time domain. Because trapezoid integration (s domain) or the Fast Fourier Transform (ω domain) of <Δr 2(t)> known only over a finite temporal interval can lead to errors which result in unphysical behavior of the moduli near the frequency extremes, we estimate the transforms algebraically by describing <Δr 2(t)> as a local power law. If the logarithmic slope of <Δr 2(t)> can be accurately determined, these estimates generally perform well at the frequency extremes. Received: 8 September 2000/Accepted: 9 March 2000  相似文献

Natural Lagrangian systems (T,Π) on R 2 described by the equation are considered, where is a positive definite quadratic form in and Π(q) has a critical point at 0. It is constructively proved that there exist a C potential energy Π and two C kinetic energies T and such that the equilibrium q(t)≡ 0 is stable for the system (T,Π) and unstable for the system .
