An element of a group G is called semi-rational if all generators of \(\langle x\rangle \) lie in the union of two conjugacy classes of G. If all elements of G are semi-rational, then G is called a semi-rational group. In this paper, we determine all semi-rational simple groups. Our study in this article generalises Feit and Seitz’s result (Ill J Math 33(1):103–131, 1989) to semi-rational groups.  相似文献

Some new results on metric ultraproducts of finite simple groups are presented. Suppose that G is such a group, defined in terms of a non-principal ultrafilter ω   on NN and a sequence (Gi)i∈N(Gi)iN of finite simple groups, and that G is neither finite nor a Chevalley group over an infinite field. Then G is isomorphic to an ultraproduct of alternating groups or to an ultraproduct of finite simple classical groups. The isomorphism type of G determines which of these two cases arises, and, in the latter case, the ω  -limit of the characteristics of the groups GiGi. Moreover, G is a complete path-connected group with respect to the natural metric on G.  相似文献

The classification of finite simple strongly real groups is complete. It is easy to see that strong reality for every nonabelian finite simple group is equivalent to the fact that each element can be written as a product of two involutions. We thus obtain a solution to Problem 14.82 of the Kourovka Notebook from the classification of finite simple strongly real groups.  相似文献

Using the vanishing of Galois cohomology of algebraic groups defined over finite fields, due to S. Lang, we further our study of the splitting properties of the automorphism groups of finite Chevalley groups. We show that under suitable restrictions on the base fields there are no complements for the inner automorphism groups in the automorphism groups of Chevalley groups. The results are somewhat complementary to the author's work on the same problem, in another paper.  相似文献

Elements of the free group define interesting maps, known as word maps, on groups. It was previously observed by Lubotzky that every subset of a finite simple group that is closed under endomorphisms occurs as the image of some word map. We improve upon this result by showing that the word in question can be chosen to be in $$v(mathbf F _n),$$ the verbal subgroup of the free group generated by the word v, provided that v is not a law on the finite simple group in question. In addition, we provide an example of a word w that witnesses the chirality of the Mathieu group $$M_{11}$$. The paper concludes by demonstrating that not every subset of a group closed under endomorphisms occurs as the image of a word map.  相似文献
