In this investigation the flow in a generic swirl tube with a tangential double-inlet swirl generator and variable exit orifices was experimentally investigated. Using magnetic resonance velocimetry (MRV) three-dimensional, three-component velocity fields were measured for two different Reynolds numbers: 10,000 and 15,000, and for three different exit orifices. The swirl generator had a fixed geometry producing an initial swirl number of 1.6 for all cases. One major observation is the occurrence of a three-layered flow structure. An annular main flow was surrounded by a recirculation zone, as reported in previous literature. However, this recirculation zone – also of an annular shape – exhibited a third layer inside: a thin, high speed jet in the center of the tube with the same flow direction as the main flow. Therefore, the conventional classification of swirling flows into ring and recirculation zone, has to be extended by a core zone. This three-layered flow structure develops independently of the exit configuration. Helical structures were observed in the near-wall region for all cases investigated. Applying an eccentric exit orifice results in the occurrence of strong stationary helical structures not only in the near-wall region but also in the center of the tube. The results, deviating significantly from previous results in the literature, underline the need for more detailed research on the topic of cyclone type flows.  相似文献

The effect of swirling flow on the unburned ratio and NO concentration in exhausted gas was studied for slurry [coal-water mixture (CWM)] spray combustion with variations of swirl numbers. A numerical analysis for CWM combustion was performed for axisymmetric flow in a cylindrical geometry. First, to check the performance of three previous k-ε turbulence models modified with swirling flow, velocity components of isothermal swirling jets were measured by laser-Doppler anemometry (LDA) and compared with predicted results. The two modified models gave more reliable results than the conventional one. Next, as the swirl number could not be estimated by the angular momentum derived from the vane angle of the circular swirler, the reduction rate of the tangential momentum flux through the tube of the circular swirler was measured and calculated. Both measured and predicted results showed that when the swirl number S′ given by the vane angle was 2.0, the effective swirl number Seff decreased by about 60% to S′. To take the results mentioned above into consideration, effects of swirl number on both the exhausted NO concentration and unburned ratio were investigated. The predicted unburned ratio showed good agreement with the experimental results. Both experimental and calculated results showed that the optimum operating conditions controlling the exhausted NO concentration and unburned ratio in this spray combustion system were obtained when the swirl number Seff was about 0.5.  相似文献

The fluidizadon behavior of Geldart A particles in a gas-solid micro-fluidized bed was investigated by Eulerian-Eulerian numerical simulation. The commonly used Gidaspow drag model was tested first. The simulation showed that the predicted minimum bubbling velocities were significantly lower than the experimental data even when an extremely fine grid size(of approximately one particle diameter) was used. The modified Gibilaro drag model was therefore tested next. The predicted minimum bubbling velocity and bed voidage were in reasonable agreement with the experimental data available in literature. The experimentally observed regime transition phenomena from bubbling to slugging were also reproduced successfully in the simulations.Parametric studies indicated that the solid-wall boundary conditions had a significant impact on the predicted gas and solid flow behavior.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a parametric experimental study of free swirling flow at the exit of a flat-vane axial swirler. A total of 16 data sets were acquired by combining four swirler vane angles (22°, 29°, 50.5°, and 58.3°) and four exit nozzles of different diameters (30, 40, 52, and 76 mm). Sophisticated pressure probes consisting of precise microphones and a two-component LDV system were used to investigate the effect of these geometrical parameters on swirling flow regimes characterized by the swirl number. Particular attention was paid to the precessing vortex core (PVC) phenomenon observed at the exit of the swirler nozzle. It has been shown that by varying the vane angle and the diameter of the exit nozzle, it is possible to independently control the swirl number value and the occurrence of a PVC. A distinct correlation has been found between the PVC-induced pressure pulsations detected by acoustic probes and the tangential velocity fluctuations measured by LDV. The use of microphones provides a quick way to measure the frequency response of swirl flow in a wide range of geometries and flow configurations. The PVC effect does not occur at low subcritical values of the integral swirl number (S < 0.5) and in the case of strong swirl flow (Sg = 0.9 and 1.2) in the absence of constriction by the nozzle (De/D0 = 1). The disappearance of the PVC effect for strong swirl flow without constriction is due to the extreme displacement of the flow to the nozzle walls. The absence of a PVC in the flow was inferred not only from measurements of the frequency response of the flow over a wide range of Re numbers, but also from the absence of specific markers in velocity RMS distributions. Measurement results are used to derive an empirical correlation of the integral swirl number and the Strouhal number with a modified geometric swirl number. This allows a generalization of the frequency characteristics of swirling flows with a PVC for flat-vane axial swirlers, which are widely used in engineering.  相似文献

The flow patterns and heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-134a during evaporation in small diameter tubes were investigated experimentally. The evaporation flow patterns of R-22 and R-134a were observed in Pyrex sight glass tubes with 2 and 8 mm diameter tube, and heat transfer coefficients were measured in smooth and horizontal copper tubes with 1.77, 3.36 and 5.35 mm diameter tube, respectively. In the flow patterns during evaporation process, the annular flows in 2 mm glass tube occurred at a relatively lower vapor quality compared to 8 mm glass tube. The flow patterns in 2 mm glass tube did not agree with the Mandhane’s flow pattern maps. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients in the small diameter tubes (d i  < 6 mm) were observed to be strongly affected by tube diameters, and to differ from those in the large diameter tubes. The heat transfer coefficients of 1.77 mm tube were higher than those of 3.36 mm and 5.35 mm tube. Most of the existing correlations failed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficient in small diameter tubes. Therefore, based on the experimental data, the new correlation is proposed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficients of R-22 and R-134a in small diameter tubes.  相似文献

The bifurcation of confined swirling flows was numerically investigated by employing both the k-? and algebraic stress turbulence models. Depending upon the branch solution examined, dual flow patterns were predicted at certain swirl levels. In the lower-branch solution which is obtained by gradually increasing the swirl level from a low-swirl flow, the flow changes with increasing swirl number from the low-swirl flow pattern to a high-swirl flow pattern. In the upper-branch solution which is acquired by gradually decreasing the swirl level from a high-swirl flow, on the other hand, the flow can maintain itself in the high-swirl flow pattern at the swirl levels where it exhibits the low-swirl flow pattern in the lower branch. The bifurcation of confined swirling flows was predicted with either the k-? model or the algebraic stress model being employed. Both the k-? and algebraic stress models result in comparable and sufficiently good predictions for confined swirling flows if high-order numerical schemes are used. The reported poor performance of the k-? model was clarified to be mainly attributable to the occurrence of the bifurcation and the use of low-order numerical schemes.  相似文献

A general heat transfer correlation for non-boiling gas–liquid flow with different flow patterns in horizontal pipes is proposed. In order to overcome the effect of flow pattern on heat transfer, a flow pattern factor (effective wetted-perimeter) is developed and introduced into our proposed correlation. To verify the correlation, local heat transfer coefficients and flow parameters were measured for air–water flow in a pipe in the horizontal position with different flow patterns. The test section was a 27.9 mm ID stainless steel pipe with a length to diameter ratio of 100. A total of 114 data points were taken by carefully coordinating the liquid and gas superficial Reynolds number combinations. The heat transfer data were measured under a uniform wall heat flux boundary condition ranging from about 3000 W/m2 to 10,600 W/m2. The superficial Reynolds numbers ranged from about 820 to 26,000 for water and from about 560 to 48,000 for air. These experimental data including different flow patterns were successfully correlated by the proposed general two-phase heat transfer correlation with an overall mean deviation of 5.5%, a standard deviation of 11.7%, and a deviation range of −18.3% to 37.0%. Ninety three percent (93%) of the data were predicted within ±20% deviation.  相似文献

An experimental investigation of swirl atomizer sprays   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In our previous studies (Chu et al. in Heat Mass Transf 43(11):1213–1224, 2007), a theoretical model of swirl atomizers was successfully established. From the analysis, the equations for the droplet size, velocity components, the boundary layer thickness and the spray cone angle were deduced based on the fundamental governing equations. The purpose of this study is to further compare the experimental result with the theoretical one already gained by a satisfactory embodiment of series of experiments. The aim is to corroborate the analytical results of the influence of atomizer construction and controlled pressure difference on typical swirl chambers. The results provide the droplet diameter as a function of pressure difference, swirl atomizer geometry, flow rate, spray cone angle. The experimental outputs also show a good confirmation of theoretical results and can also be used for further optimization on existing swirl chambers. Based on the results obtained, an optimization methodology on characteristics of swirl atomizers is proposed with the adjustment of individual design parameter and the matching flow number.  相似文献

The present paper is the Part II of a broad study concerning void fraction and pressure drop for air-water upward external flow across tube bundles. In the Part I, the experimental facility and the data regression procedures were described and the experimental results are presented and discussed. Initially, Part II presents a literature review concerning void fraction and pressure drop predictive methods available in the open literature for two-phase upward flow across tube bundles. Next, the methods from literature are compared among them and with the database presented in paper Part I. Significant discrepancies are observed among the predictive methods, and deviations as high as two orders of magnitude are verified among the predicted values of pressure drop. Then, a new void fraction predictive method is proposed based on the experimental results and on the minimum kinetic energy principle. This method provides satisfactory predictions of the results described in paper Part I and also of independent data from the literature. A new predictive method for frictional pressure drop during two-phase flow based on two-phase multiplier is also proposed. This method predicted 94% of the experimental data obtained in the present study within an error margin of ± 30%, and also provides accurate predictions of independent results for triangular tube bundles gathered in the open literature.  相似文献

The in-tube cooling flow and heat transfer characteristics of R134a at supercritical pressures are measured experimentally for various pressures and mass fluxes in a horizontal tube. The tube is made of stainless steel with an inner diameter of 4.01 mm. Experiments are conducted for mass fluxes from 70 kg/m2 s to 405 kg/m2 s and pressures from 4.5 MPa to 5.5 MPa. The inlet refrigerant temperature is from 80 °C to 140 °C. The results show that the refrigerant temperature, the mass flux and the pressure all significantly affect the flow and heat transfer characteristics of R134a at supercritical pressures. The experimentally measured frictional pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient are compared with predicted results from several existing correlations. The comparisons show that the predicted frictional pressure drop using Petrov and Popov’s correlation accounting for the density and viscosity variations agree well with the measured data. Gnielinski’s correlation for the heat transfer coefficient agrees best with the measured data with deviations not exceeding 25%, while correlations based on supercritical CO2 heat transfer data overcorrect for the influence of the thermophysical property variations resulting in larger deviations. A new empirical correlation is developed based on the measured results by modifying Gnielinski’s equation with thermophysical property terms including both the property variations from the inlet to the outlet of the entire test section and from the bulk to the wall. Most of the experimental data is predicted by the new correlation within a range of 15%.  相似文献

Correlation of swirl number for a radial-type swirl generator   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An experimental investigation was undertaken to derive a new correlation for the swirl number of a radial-type swirl generator under various Reynolds numbers and various vane angle conditions. A radial-type swirl generator with 16 rotary guide vanes was used to generate an annular swirling jet flow. The Reynolds numbers ranged from 60 to 6000, and the vane angles from 0° to 56°. Quantitative measurements for the velocities were made by using an optical method of laser-Doppler anemometry (LDA). Three-component velocity profiles of axial, radial, and azimuthal components at the swirling jet exit were measured for various flow conditions. A flow visualization method using smoke-wire and still photography was also applied to observe the flow patterns of the recirculation region behind the circular bluff body. Under low Reynolds number conditions, the swirl strength was found to be strongly dependent on the Reynolds number as well as on the guide vane angle. Based on the experimental results, a modified swirl number S is derived to characterize the swirling flow, which is useful for the design of a swirl generator.  相似文献

As part of a study on the effect of tube diameter on the mean drop size and liquid film flow rate in annular two-phase flow, data was obtained for the vertical upflow of an air-water system in a 20 mm internal diameter tube, held at a pressure of 1.5 bar and ambient temperature. This complements data taken in earlier experiments on 10 and 32 mm tubes. Increases in the superficial gas velocity caused reductions in the mean drop size whilst increasing the liquid mass flux in all but the lowest gas velocity case, caused the drop size to rise. Comparisons were made between the current drop size data and that from a 10 mm and 32 mm internal diameter tube, for similar conditions of temperature and pressure. The current drop size measurements, which fall between those from earlier work, confirm the dependence of drop size on tube diameter. The performance of several drop size correlations have been tested. Because the correlations do not account for the influence of tube diameter, they fail to predict the drop size data accurately. The influence of gas and liquid flow rate on the measured film flow rate show trends similar to those seen in data from the 10 mm and 32 mm diameter tubes. Models, to calculate the entrained liquid mass flux were tested; good predictions were given.  相似文献

This paper presents flow pattern experimental results obtained during two-phase upward flow across a horizontal tube bundle. Experiments were performed for flows across a normal triangular tube bundle with 19 mm OD tubes and transversal pitch of 24 mm. Results were obtained for gas and liquid superficial velocities ranging from 0.13 to 10.00 m/s and 0.02 to 1.50 m/s, respectively. Flow patterns were identified subjectively based on visual observations through side windows, and objectively using the k-means clustering method based on signals of a differential pressure transducer and a capacitive sensor. Bubbles, large bubbles, dispersed bubbles, churn, intermittent and annular flow patterns were identified subjectively. The clustering method satisfactorily identified groups of data corresponding to the distinct flow patterns, which were compared with predictive methods available in the open literature. New predictive methods for transitions between flow patterns are proposed based on the flow patterns identified objectively. The proposed methods predicted accurately the data obtained in the present study as well as experimental results and flow pattern maps available in the open literature for distinct geometries.  相似文献

The transient critical flow experiment was carried out in the high-pressure test loop. The break sections were the sharp-edged tubes with inner diameter of nearly 4 mm but with quite different lengths. The initial pressure was up to 22.0 MPa and the inlet subcooling covered the range of 0 to 60C. New critical flow data were provided and the effects of inlet liquid subcooling and tube lengths were described. The proposed empirical nonequilibrium correlation was used to calculate the critical mass flow rate for such small diameter tube. Received on 9 September 1998  相似文献

The condensation heat transfer characteristics for CO2 flowing in a horizontal microfin tube were investigated by experiment with respect to condensation temperature and mass flux. The test section consists of a 2,400?mm long horizontal copper tube of 4.6?mm inner diameter. The experiments were conducted at refrigerant mass flux of 400–800?kg/m2s, and saturation temperature of 20–30?°C. The main experimental results showed that annular flow was highly dominated the majority of condensation flow in the horizontal microfin tube. The condensation heat transfer coefficient increases with decreasing saturation temperature and increasing mass flux. The experimental data were compared against previous heat transfer correlations. Most correlations failed to predict the experimental data. However, the correlation by Cavallini et al. showed relatively good agreement with experimental data in the microfin tube. Therefore, a new condensation heat transfer correlation is proposed with mean and average deviations of 3.14 and ?7.6?%, respectively.  相似文献

The particle dispersion characteristics in a confined swirling flow with a swirl number of approx. 0.5 were studied in detail by performing measurements using phase-Doppler anemometry (PDA) and numerical predictions. A mixture of gas and particles was injected without swirl into the test section, while the swirling airstream was provided through a co-flowing annular inlet. Two cases with different primary jet exit velocities were considered. For these flow conditions, a closed central recirculation bubble was established just downstream of the inlet.

The PDA measurements allowed the correlation between particle size and velocity to be obtained and also the spatial change in the particle size distribution throughout the flow field. For these results, the behaviour of different size classes in the entire particle size spectrum, ranging from about 15 to 80 μm, could be studied, and the response of the particles to the mean flow and the gas turbulence could be characterized. Due to the response characteristics of particles with different diameters to the mean flow and the flow turbulence, a considerable separation of the particles was observed which resulted in a streamwise increase in the particle mean number diameter in the core region of the central recirculation bubble. For the lower particle inlet velocity (i.e. low primary jet exit velocity), this effect is more pronounced, since here the particles have more time to respond to the flow reversal and the swirl velocity component. This also gave a higher mass of recirculating particle material.

The numerical predictions of the gas flow were performed by solving the time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations in connection with the well known kε turbulence model. Although this turbulence model is based on the assumption of isotropic turbulence, the agreement of the calculated mean velocity profiles compared to the measured gas velocities is very good. The gas-phase turbulent kinetic energy, however, is considerably underpredicted in the initial mixing region. The particle dispersion characteristics were calculated by using the Lagrangian approach, where the influence of the particulate phase on the gas flow could be neglected, since only very low mass loadings were considered. The calculated results for the particle mean velocity and the mass flux are also in good agreement with the experiments. Furthermore, the change in the particle mean diameter throughout the flow field was predicted approximately, which shows that the applied simple stochastic dispersion model also gives good results for such very complex flows. The variation of the gas and particle velocity in the primary inlet had a considerable impact on the particle dispersion behaviour in the swirling flow and the particle residence time in the central recirculation bubble, which could be determined from the numerical calculations. For the lower particle inlet velocity, the maximum particle size-dependence residence time within the recirculation region was considerably shifted towards larger particles.  相似文献

For the case of axial compression the two-point velocity correlation equations of axisymmetric homogeneous turbulence are derived. Appropriate integrations then lead to equations for the components of the Reynolds stress tensor as well as to those for the two independent integral length-scales characterizing axisymmetric homogeneous turbulence. These equations contain a certain number of empirical constants. Values for these constants are taken from the literature, or were adjusted from the present data. The resulting model is validated using data from a motored piston engine. The flow field, which has negligible swirl and tumble, has been measured using particle image velocimetry (PIV). Since turbulence is axisymmetric and homogeneous in the counter region, two-dimensional PIV provides the time history of the axial and radial length-scales. The experimental data are compared with the mathematical model.  相似文献

The condensation heat transfer of pure refrigerants, R-22, R-134a and a binary refrigerant R-410A flowing in small diameter tubes was investigated experimentally. The condenser is a countflow heat exchanger which refrigerant flows in the inner tube and cooling water flows in the annulus. The heat exchanger is smooth, horizontal copper tube of 1.77, 3.36 and 5.35 mm inner diameter, respectively. The length of heat exchanger is 1220, 2660 and 3620 mm, respectively. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200–400 kg/m2 s and saturation temperature of 40°C. The main results were summarized as follows: in case of single-phase flow, the single-phase Nusselt Number measured by experimental data was higher than that calculated by Gnielinski and Wu and Little correlation. The new single-phase correlation based on the experimental data was proposed in this study. In case of two-phase flow, the condensation heat transfer coefficient of R-410A for three tubes was slightly higher than that of R-22 and R-134a at the given mass flux. The condensation heat transfer coefficient of R-22 showed almost a similar value to that of R-134a. The condensation heat transfer coefficient for R-22, R-134a and R-410A increased with increasing mass flux and decreasing tube diameter. Most of the existing correlations which were proposed in the large diameter tube failed to predict condensation heat transfer. Therefore, the new condensation heat transfer correlation based on the experimental data was proposed in the present study.  相似文献
