Prompt k 0-factors relative to chlorine and relative g-emission intensities were determined for the strong non-1/v absorbers 113Cd, 149Sm, 151Eu,155Gd and 157Gd. Measurements were performed using the SNU-KAERI prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) facility at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI). For proper experimental determination of the prompt k 0-factors, the effective g-factor and cadmium ratio were taken into account, in consideration of the effects from the non-1/v capture cross section and neutron spectrum in the thermal and epithermal energy region. By using the actual spectrum of the neutron beam in this study, the effective g-factor was obtained by calculation, and the influence of epithermal neutrons on the capture rate was corrected by measuring the cadmium ratio for each non-1/v target isotope. The measured prompt k 0-factors were used to check the consistency between the existing dataset of the absolute g-emission intensity and the 2200 m/s capture cross section for these isotopes.  相似文献

Exploration and modification of data for k 0-PGAA (prompt γ-ray activation analysis) values used as standards for k 0 standardization are needed. An integrated system has been installed and calibrated in Hot Laboratories Center for PGAA, using 252Cf isotopic neutron source with neutron flux of 6.16E8 n/cms. The prompt k 0-factors of about 12 elements were determined versus the 1951.1 keV γ-ray of the 35Cl, as well as analyzing crude oil and oil product samples. The concentrations of the elements in crude oil H, B, Mg, Al, Na, Si, P, S, Cl, V and Cd were 1.18E5, 0.084, 5.48E2, 8.45E2 4.88E2, 1.62E2, 3.72E2, 8.2, 144.3, 393 and 209.2 ppm while in oil product samples were 1.32E5, 5.87, 4.56E2, 4.22E2, 7.16E3, 699, 157, 8.74, 492.3, 61 and 198.2 ppm. Validation of the k 0-PGAA was applied in analyzing standard IAEA reference material (soil-7) which give good agreement with the literature data. The 252Cf neutron beam in radiation position was characterized by the cadmium-ratio method, and found that the cadmium ratio (f), was 160.  相似文献

Recommended k 0-factors for gamma-lines of 24 elements useful for neutron-induced prompt gamma-ray analysis (PGA) and which are not influenced by neutron spectrum differences were obtained from the k 0-factors measured with the cold and thermal neutron guided beams of JRR-3M, by statistical calculation. The prompt gamma-ray emission probabilities were derived from the recommended k 0-factors using atomic weight, isotopic abundance and thermal neutron capture cross section all related to the k 0-factors, for which one can obtain accurate data. The derived gamma-ray emission probabilities for the light elements (H to Ca) agreed well within ±10% with those of the ENSDF values, which reflect recent data while the agreement for heavy elements (Ti to Pb) was ±40% with those of the ENSDF, which are still composed of old data. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

A low cost neutron capture prompt gamma activation analysis facility has been constructed at The University of Michigan's Pheonix Memorial Laboratory. Although the neutron beam used has a fairly large epithermal component (Cd ratio 7.1), background levels are low enough to result in satisfactory measurement of over 16 different elements. For the elements of greatest sensitivity (samarium, boron, gadolinium, and cadmium) minimum detectable levels of 3.6·10−5 to 1.4·10−5 gram for a one hour measurement are possible. The fast neutrons incident to the detector were found to be minimal. Estimates of up to 3 years of continuous operation before measurable damage is expected.  相似文献

The design features are described of a prompt gamma neutron activation analysis system at HANARO, a 30 MW research reactor in the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. The beam consists of polychromatic thermal neutrons diffracted by a set of pyrolytic graphite crystals at orders n in the range 1n6 at a Bragg angle of 45° on a horizontal beam line. A neutron flux of 1.0·108 n·cm–2·s–1 is calculated at the sample position from the reflectivity of the crystal which has been confirmed in a measurement of a diffracted neutron spectrum using a time-of-flight spectrometer and gold-wire activation. The fast neutron and gamma backgrounds will be low due to the use of a diffracted beam and a tapered collimator. The detection system comprises a 30% n-type HPGe detector, signal electronics and a fast ADC. The first application of this system will be the analysis of boron concentration in biological samples for neutron capture therapy. Construction of the beam line and the arrangement of the detection system is proceeding.  相似文献

Material analysis with prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) requires a proper geometrical arrangement for equipments in laboratory. Application of PGNAA in analysis of biological samples, due to small size of sample, needs attention to the dimension of neutron beam. In our work, neutron source has been made of 241Am–Be type. Activity of 241Am was 20 Ci which lead to neutron source strength of 4.4 × 107 neutrons per second. Water has been considered as the basic shielding material for the neutron source. The effect of various concentration of boric acid in the reduction of intensity of fast and thermal components of the neutron beam and gamma ray has been investigated. Gamma ray is produced by (α, n) reaction in Am–Be source (4.483 MeV), neutron capture by hydrogen (2.224 MeV), and neutron capture by boron (0.483 MeV). Various types of neutron and gamma ray dosimeters have been employed including BF3 and NE-213 detectors to detect fast and thermal neutrons. BGO scintillation detector has been used for gamma ray spectroscopy. It is shown that the gamma and neutron radiation dose due to direct beam is of the same magnitude as the dose due to radiation scattered in the laboratory ambient. It is concluded that 14 kg boric acid dissolved in 1,000 kg water is the optimum solution to surround the neutron source. The experimental results have been compared with Monte Carlo simulation.  相似文献

The guided thermal neutron beam at 100 MW Dhruva research reactor facility of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) was used to carry out prompt gamma-ray neutron activation analysis (PGNAA). The prompt k 0-factors have been determined for the isotopes of the elements H, B, K, Co, Cu, Ca, Ti, Cr, Cd, Ba, Hg and Gd with respect to 1951 keV gamma-line of 36Cl. The prompt k 0-factors for H, Cl and Cu were also measured with respect to the 1381 keV gamma-line of 49Ti. Different samples like NH4Cl, Ti metal, cobalt chloride and other stoichiometric compounds and pure metals were used for this purpose. Prompt gamma-rays were accumulated using a 22% HPGe detector connected to a PC based 8k MCA in single mode counting. The energy calibration in the range of 100–8500 keV was carried out using gamma-rays from 152Eu and 60Co, and the prompt gamma-rays from 36Cl whereas the absolute detection efficiency for this energy range was determined using 152Eu and prompt gamma-rays from 36Cl and 49Ti.  相似文献

The k 0 standardization method has been studied and applied at JAERI for the accurate determination of multielements by neutron-induced prompt gamma-ray analysis (PGA). The k 0 factors for 26 elements using Cl as a comparator were measured by the cold and thermal neutron guided beams of JRR-3M with an uncertainty less than 3% except for a few elements. The k 0 factors for most elements obtained with both cold and thermal neutrons agreed within 3%, and agreed also with those measured at other cold and thermal neutron guided beams within 10%, except for a few elements. Multielement determinations in reference materials were performed using the k 0 factors obtained to evaluate the accuracy and precision of this work.  相似文献

Neutron spectra were measured by the time of flight method using a rotating disk chopper system in the JRR-3M prompt gamma ray analysis system. Effective g-factors for non-1/v elements such as Cd, Sm and Gd were calculated from the measured neutron spectra and the neutron cross section data, and they was used for correcting the k 0-factors. The resulting k 0-factors for the cold and thermal neutron beams agreed within 10%. Furthermore, the prompt gamma ray emission probabilities of Cd, Sm and Gd were derived from the corrected k 0-factors using other relevant physical constants.  相似文献

A summary of k 0-based R&D work on neutron activation analysis (NAA), internal mono standard NAA (IM-NAA) and prompt gamma-ray NAA (PGNAA) is presented. The k 0-based NAA was standardized by characterizing irradiation sites of research reactors, validated using reference materials and applied to samples of different origin. Recently IM-NAA method was developed, validated for small and large size samples and applied for the analysis of large size as well as non-standard geometry samples. Studies on PGNAA included characterization of neutron beam, determinations of detection efficiency and prompt k 0-factors, and analytical applications.  相似文献

The concentration of nitrogen in pork meat is determined by in-vivo prompt gamma-ray activation analysis using the reactor neutron beam and a high purity germanium gamma-ray spectrometer. The photopeak area of the 10827 keV high energy prompt gamma-ray, originated from14N(n, ) reaction on the pork medium, is analyzed to determine the concentration of nitrogen. Urea solutions with various concentration of nitrogen are used to calibrate the absolute efficiency of the gamma-ray spectrometer. In 9000 s irradiation and counting period, the minimum detectable concentration is 1.7 g of N/100 g of meat using the in-vivo technique. The result is also compared to data obtained by another analytical method. This nondestructive, in-vivo technique, with nominal radiation dose, is a reliable and promising method to determine the nitrogen concentration in living body.  相似文献

The k 0-standardization method has been applied and evaluated at the cold-neutron prompt gamma-ray activation (PGA) facility of the Swiss spallation source SINQ (Paul Scherrer Institute). The k 0-factors for 26 elements of interest were measured using chlorine as a comparator. The results showed good agreement with the values determined at other cold and thermal neutron guided beams, except for a few elements. Then, standard reference materials were analyzed to assess the accuracy of the method using the obtained k 0-factors. Finally, the technique was used for multielement determination in various samples coming from nuclear waste storage, geochemistry and geology. In addition, the non-destructive nature of PGAA offered an interesting application in archeology.  相似文献

Several samples of 237Np and 242Pu were irradiated in the guided cold neutron beam of the prompt gamma activation analysis facility at the Budapest Research Reactor. The thermal neutron capture cross sections of 237 Np and 242Pu were evaluated from the obtained prompt and delayed gamma ray data. The thermal neutron capture cross sections for 237Np(n,γ)238Np was found to be $ \sigma_{0} ({}^{237}{\text{Np}}) = 170.4 \pm 7.4\,{\text{b}} $ and for 242Pu(n,γ)243Pu to be $ \sigma_{0} ({}^{242}{\text{Pu}}) = 19.6 \pm 3.9\,{\text{b}} $ .  相似文献

A survey of the possibilities of analysis by alpha-induced prompt gamma-ray spectrometry is reported for 57 elements at a bombarding energy of 5 MeV. Additional data obtained at 11 and 16 MeV are given. Interference-free sensitivities are presented. The use of the position sensitive detector is introduced to overcome problems such as occur in prompt alpha spectrometry from (p, α) reactions. The technique is illustrated by studies on the reaction19F(p, α)16O and severely tested for boron analysis using the reaction11B(p, α)8Be and measuring the α0 and α1 groups.  相似文献

Prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) is a nuclear analytical technique for non-destructive determination of elemental and isotopic compositions. The principle of PGAA technique is based on detection of captured gamma-ray emitted from an analytical sample while being irradiated with neutrons. Use of a cold neutron beam guide greatly reduces the gamma-ray background at the analytical sample while maintaining a neutron capture rate is comparable to that of standard thermal neutron PGAA. A new cold neutron induced prompt gamma activation analysis (CN-PGAA) system has been under construction since April of 2009 at the HANARO Cold Neutron Building (KAERI, Republic of KOREA). In this study, the Compton suppression factor of the CN-PGAA system was estimated to be 5.5 using a 60Co radioactive source in conjunction with the MCNPX simulations. Several parameters of the CN-PGAA system were studied to estimate and optimize the performance of the system: scintillation material in the guarded detector of a Compton suppression spectrometer (CSS); the relative positions of the HPGe detector and annular detector; and the distance between the HPGe detector and back catcher BGO detectors of the CSS. In addition, the neutron ray-trace simulation package, McStas, was adopted to predict the neutron flux and wavelength distribution at the end of the cold neutron beam guide. These results served as input for the MCNPX simulation of the CN-PGAA system.  相似文献

In order to determine multiple elements by k 0 standardization-based neutron induced prompt gamma-ray analysis (PGA), measurements and evaluation of k 0 factors for the elements have been performed. The k 0 factors using Cl as a comparator for 27 elements, which are effective for the analysis by PGA, were measured with precision almost less than 3% using the cold and thermal guided neutron beams at JRR-3M. The accuracy of the k 0 factors were better than 10% except for the non-1/v elements of Cd and Sm. Neutron spectrum correction is necessary for common use of k 0 factors of the non-1/v elements.  相似文献

Summary A prompt gamma activation analysis facility has been constructed on the ST1 horizontal beam port at the HANARO research reactor, KAERI in 2003. The detector system consists of a high-purity Ge detector surrounded by BGO/NaI(Tl) scintillators as an annulus type to reject the Compton scattered photons. Detection sensitivity for boron was obtained from the prompt gamma-ray spectra of boric acid, B(OH)3, containing 0.1-65 μg boron. The net peak for the calculation of the boron concentration was obtained by eliminating the sodium 472 keV peak, involved in the boron 478 keV peak. The biological samples used are NIST SRMs such as Peach Leaves, Apple Leaves, Tomato Leaves, Spinach Leaves, Total Diet, Typical Diet, Oyster Tissue and Corn Bran, etc. The measured values for high boron concentration showed up to a 3% of the relative, but in a low concentration below 5 ppm, present values were higher than the certified ones.  相似文献

This work describes a nuclear facility forin vivo prompt gamma activation analysis (IVPGAA) using a moderated neutron beam from a 0.1 W Tsing-Hua Mobile Educational Reactor (THMER). The IVPGAA measurement is a new technique for toxic cadmium determination in organs, which can efficiently be used in clinical diagnosis. The low-power nuclear reactor provides a total neutron flux of 3.3·104 n·cm–2·s–1 on the surface of the central vertical neutron beam tube to which a liquid phantom is positioned. The capability of such partial-body irradiation facility is demonstrated. The detection limit of cadmium in the left kidney for a skin dose equivalent of 1.66 mSv (166 mrem) was 1.34 mg in a 500-s irradiation/counting period, and the sensitivity in the left kidney was 103 counts mg–1·mSv–1. The performance of IVPGAA system using the THMER nuclear facility therefore has the advantages of mobility and feasibility with high sensitivity under low neutron and gamma doses.  相似文献

A novel approach is implemented to alleviate some persistent problems in neutron capture prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA). Detection sensitivities of PGAA are often restricted by the following factors: poor signal to noise ratios, interferences from background signals, and, in some cases, overlapping energy lines from different origins, namely ultra short-lived decay lines interfering with prompt decay. Timing the gamma-ray acquisition with the actual capture events using a pulsed beam of cold neutrons allows discrimination between prompt and delayed emissions from a sample source as well as against background events. Coincidence gating selects the prompt gamma-ray emissions. Contributions of background capture gamma-rays are suppressed because of different flight times of neutrons to the sources of background radiation, providing a reduction in direct gamma-ray interferences. Anti-coincidence gating allows measurement of only decay radiation that originates from short-lived activated states of the nuclides after capture. Spectra of decaying nuclides are free of interfering prompt activities, as well as have lower continuum background from Compton scattering of high-energy prompt gamma-rays in the detector. The measurements provide the opportunity to use ultra-short half-life nuclides for analytical purposes, no sample transfer times are lost, and repetitive activation and counting cycles are achieved with the use of pulsed neutron beams.  相似文献
