In this paper we consider the strongly damped and driven nonlinear wave equations under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. By introducing a new norm which is equivalent to the usual norm, we obtain the existence of a global periodic attractor attracting any bounded set exponentially in the phase space, which implies that the system behaves exactly as a one dimensional system.  相似文献

We consider systems of partial differential equations, which contain only second derivatives in the x variables and which are uniformly parabolic in the sense of Petrovskii. For such systems we obtain necessary and, separately, sufficient conditions for the maximum norm principle to hold in the layer Rn × ( 0,T ] and in the cylinder × ( 0,T], where is a bounded subdomain of Rn. In this paper the norm is understood in a generalized sense, i.e. as the Minkowski functional of a compact convex body in Rm containing the origin. The necessary and sufficient conditions coincide if the coefficients of the system do not depend on t. The criteria for validity of the maximum norm principle are formulated as a number of equivalent algebraic conditions describing the relation between the geometry of the unit sphere of the given norm and coefficients of the system under consideration. Simpler formulated criteria are given for certain classes of norms: for differentiable norms, p-norms ( 1 p ) in Rm, as well as for norms whose unit balls are m-pyramids, m-bipyramids, cylindrical bodies, m-parallelepipeds. Given a Hamiltonian system, one can represent it using a symplectic map. This symplectic map is specified by a set of homogeneous polynomials which are uniquely determined by the Hamiltonian. In this paper, we construct an invariant norm in the space of homogeneous polynomials of a given degree. This norm is a function of parameters characterizing the original Hamiltonian system. We introduce twisted Alexander norms of a compact connected orientable 3-manifold with first Betti number greater than one, generalizing norms of McMullen and Turaev. We show that twisted Alexander norms give lower bounds on the Thurston norm of a 3-manifold. Using these we completely determine the Thurston norm of many 3-manifolds which are not determined by norms of McMullen and Turaev.

We present in this paper a new approach to finding the monthly optimal operation of a multireservoir power system connected in series on a river. The hydroelectric power generation is a highly nonlinear function of the storage, and the conversion factor assigned to each power plant is also a nonlinear function of the storage. We use for both a quadratic function of the storage; the resulting problem has a highly nonlinear objective function and linear constraints. We propose a transformation such that the system equations are reduced to linear-quadratic form. Lagrange and Kuhn-Tucker multipliers are used to adjoin the equality and inequality constraints to the objective function. Numerical results are presented for a real system in operation consisting of two reservoirs in series on a river for widely different water conditions.This work was supported by the National Research Council of Canada, Grant No. A4146. In this article, we investigate some operator-norm inequalities related to some conjectures posed by Hayajneh and Kittaneh that are related to questions of Bourin regarding a special type of inequalities referred to as subadditivity inequalities. While some inequalities are meant to answer these conjectures, other inequalities present reverse-type inequalities for these conjectures. Then, we present some new trace inequalities related to Heinz means inequality and use these inequalities to prove some variants of the aforementioned conjectures.  相似文献

We define an infinite sequence of new invariants, δn, of a group G that measure the size of the successive quotients of the derived series of G. In the case that G is the fundamental group of a 3-manifold, we obtain new 3-manifold invariants. These invariants are closely related to the topology of the 3-manifold. They give lower bounds for the Thurston norm which provide better estimates than the bound established by McMullen using the Alexander norm. We also show that the δn give obstructions to a 3-manifold fibering over S1 and to a 3-manifold being Seifert fibered. Moreover, we show that the δn give computable algebraic obstructions to a 4-manifold of the form X×S1 admitting a symplectic structure even when the obstructions given by the Seiberg-Witten invariants fail. There are also applications to the minimal ropelength and genera of knots and links in S3.  相似文献

By introducing a new norm which is equivalent to the usual norm in the phase space, we prove that for n-dimensional second order dissipative lattices of coupled oscillators with external periodic forces under Dirichlet, Neumann and periodic boundary conditions, if the system is bounded dissipative and the coupled coefficients are both large enough, the asymptotic synchronization will occur. And we give a concrete bounded dissipative second order lattices system. Our results show that the bounds of the difference between the components of any solution are directly proportional to mn/2 and inversely proportional to the coupled coefficients, where m is the mesh size and n is the space dimension of lattice points.  相似文献

This paper investigates the relations between theorems of the alternative and the minimum norm duality theorem. A typical theorem of the alternative is associated with two systems of linear inequalities and/or equalities, a primal system and a dual one, asserting that either the primal system has a solution, or the dual system has a solution, but never both. On the other hand, the minimum norm duality theorem says that the minimum distance from a given point z to a convex set is equal to the maximum of the distances from z to the hyperplanes separating z and . We consider the theorems of Farkas, Gale, Gordan, and Motzkin, as well as new theorems that characterize the optimality conditions of discrete l 1-approximation problems and multifacility location problems. It is shown that, with proper choices of , each of these theorems can be recast as a pair of dual problems: a primal steepest descent problem that resembles the original primal system, and a dual least–norm problem that resembles the original dual system. The norm that defines the least-norm problem is the dual norm with respect to that which defines the steepest descent problem. Moreover, let y solve the least norm problem and let r denote the corresponding residual vector. If r=0, which means that z , then y solves the dual system. Otherwise, when r0 and z , any dual vector of r solves both the steepest descent problem and the primal system. In other words, let x solve the steepest descent problem; then, r and x are aligned. These results hold for any norm on . If the norm is smooth and strictly convex, then there are explicit rules for retrieving x from r and vice versa.  相似文献

Let H(B) be the set of all harmonic functions f on the unit ball B of Rn. For 0 < p, q ≤∞ and a normal weight φ, the mixed norm space Hp,q, φ(B) consists of all functions f in H(B) for which the mixed norm p,q, φ < ∞. In this article, we obtain some characterizations in terms of radial, tangential, and partial derivative norms in Hp,q, φ(B). The parallel results for the Bloch-type space are also obtained. This paper is devoted to investigating the existence and uniqueness of mild solution to the 3D incompressible micropolar fluid system in the Fourier-Herz framework. By taking advantage of microlocal analysis and the mutual effect in the same frequency range of convection term, we give a special initial data (u0, ω0) whose norm of (q > 2) is arbitrarily small, however, the couple (u0, ω0) produces a solution which is arbitrarily large in after an arbitrarily short time. This implies the system is ill-posed in the sense of "norm inflation" as q > 2.  相似文献
