The objective of this paper is to develop an efficient active control algorithm for manipulating wake flows past a solid cylinder in an electrically low-conducting fluid (e.g. seawater). The intent is to avoid both vortex shedding and flow separation from the body. It is expected to reduce the mean drag significantly. This is achieved through the introduction of a Lorentz force in the azimuthal direction generated by an array of permanent magnets and electrodes located on the solid structure. With the use of a symmetric and static Lorentz force over the entire surface of the cylinder, the vortex shedding behind the cylinder weakens and eventually disappears completely when the Lorentz force is sufficiently large. The localized Lorentz force along the rear surface of the cylinder was also used to control the vortex shedding behind the cylinder. In this case, numerical results show that the efficiency of the localized Lorentz force in controlling the flow is to that of the Lorentz force distributed over the whole surface.  相似文献

In this work a two phase 3D mathematical model was developed using the volume of fluid (VOF) algorithm, which is able to accurately describe the cavity geometry and size as well as the liquid flow patterns created when a gas jet that impinges on a liquid free surface. These phenomena are commonly found in steelmaking operations such as in the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and the Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) where oxygen jets impinge on a steel bath and they control heat, momentum and mass transfer. The model was successfully validated with measurements made on a physical model through velocity fields obtained by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and high speed camera images of the cavity. Agreement between model predictions and experimental measurements is excellent in both x-velocity component of the liquid and cavity sizes. The cavity formed in the liquid by the impinging jet depends on a force balance at the free surface where the inertial force of the jet governs this phenomena, while the liquid circulation depends on also the jet inertial force of the jet, but its angle plays an important role, being the lowest angle the best choice to shear the bath and promote stronger circulation and better mixing in the liquid.  相似文献

A meshless method for modelling two-phase flows with phase transition is described. The method is based on consideration of three systems: viscous-vortex blobs, thermal-blobs and droplets; and can be applied for numerical simulation of 2D non-isothermal flows of ‘gas-evaporating droplets’ in the framework of the one-way coupled two-fluid approach. The carrier phase is viscous incompressible gas. The dispersed phase is presented by a cloud of identical spherical droplets, and, due to evaporation, the radius and mass of droplets are time dependent. The carrier phase parameters are calculated using the viscous-vortex and thermal-blob method; the dispersed phase parameters are calculated using the Lagrangian approach. Two applications have been considered: (i) a standard benchmark – Lamb vortex; (ii) a cold spray injected into a hot quiescent gas. In the latter problem three cases corresponding to three droplet sizes were investigated. The smallest droplets (of the three cases considered) are more readily entrained by the carrier phase and form ring-like structures; the flow shows better mixing. Larger droplets evaporate less intensively. The medium sized droplets collect into two narrow bands stretched along the jet axis. The largest droplets form a two-phase jet, which remains close to the jet axis. (© 2015 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The bubble-type vortex breakdown inside a cylinder with flow driven by rotation of the base, has applications in mixing. We investigate this phenomena and its effect on the environment inside an open cylinder, with potential application as a tissue-engineering bioreactor, with tissue-scaffolds of two different geometries immersed in the fluid. Addition of scaffolds induces a blockage effect, hindering the flow in the central vortex core returning to the rotating base. This promotes early onset of vortex breakdown and alters the final shape of vortex breakdown bubbles. Placement of the scaffolds centrally on the cylinder axis yields almost identical levels and distributions of shear stress between the upper and lower surfaces of scaffolds. A change from a disk shaped to an ellipsoidal scaffold, of the same size, reduces the intensity of the maximum shear stresses at the scaffold surface by up to 50%. There is a range of Reynolds numbers where increasing Reynolds number, and hence possibly increasing mixing efficiency, leads to a decrease in the maximum levels of fluid forces at the scaffold surfaces. This is an important conclusion for scaffold based tissue engineering where improved mixing is sought, but often sacrificed in favor of minimizing fluid forces.  相似文献

In this investigation we propose a computational approach for the solution of optimal control problems for vortex systems with compactly supported vorticity. The problem is formulated as a PDE-constrained optimization in which the solutions are found using a gradient-based descent method. Recognizing such Euler flows as free-boundary problems, the proposed approach relies on shape differentiation combined with adjoint analysis to determine cost functional gradients. In explicit tracking of interfaces (vortex boundaries) this method offers an alternative to grid-based techniques, such as the level-set methods, and represents a natural optimization formulation for vortex problems computed using the contour dynamics technique. We develop and validate this approach using the design of 2D equilibrium Euler flows with finite-area vortices as a model problem. It is also discussed how the proposed methodology can be applied to Euler flows featuring other vorticity distributions, such as vortex sheets, and to time-dependent phenomena.  相似文献

The problem of a particle impacting on a wall, a common phenomenon in particle-laden flows in the minerals and process industries, is investigated computationally using a spectral-element method with the grid adjusting to the movement of the particle towards the wall. Remeshing is required at regular intervals to avoid problems associated with mesh distortion and the constantly reducing maximum time-step associated with integration of the non-linear convective terms of the Navier–Stokes equations. Accurate interpolation between meshes is achieved using the same high-order interpolation employed by the spectral-element flow solver. This approach allows the full flow evolution to be followed from the initial approach, through impact and afterwards as the flow relaxes. The method is applied to the generic two-dimensional and three-dimensional bluff body geometries, the circular cylinder and the sphere. The principal case reported here is that of a particle colliding normally with a wall and sticking. For the circular cylinder, non-normal collisions are also considered. The impacts are studied for moderate Reynolds numbers up to approximately 1200. A cylindrical body impacting on a wall produces two vortices from its wake that convect away from the cylinder along the wall before stalling while lifting induced wall vorticity into the main flow. The situation for a sphere impact is similar, except in this case a vortex ring is formed from the wake vorticity. Again, secondary vorticity from the wall and particle plays a role. At higher Reynolds number, the secondary vorticity tends to form a semi-annular structure encircling the primary vortex core. At even higher Reynolds numbers, the secondary annular structure fragments into semi-discrete structures, which again encircle and orbit the primary core. Vorticity fields and passive tracer particles are used to characterize the interaction of the vortical structures. The evolution of the pressure and viscous drag coefficients during a collision are provided for a typical sphere impact. For a Reynolds number greater than approximately 1000 for a sphere and 400 for a cylinder, the primary vortex core produced by the impacting body undergoes a short-wavelength instability in the azimuthal/spanwise direction. Experimental visualisation using dye carried out in water is presented to validate the predictions.  相似文献

Wind-excited vibrations in the frequency range of 10 to 50 Hz due to vortex shedding often cause fatigue failures in the cables of overhead transmission lines. Damping devices, such as the Stockbridge dampers, have been in use for a long time for supressing these vibrations. The dampers are conveniently modelled by means of their driving point impedance, measured in the lab over the frequency range under consideration. The cables can be modelled as strings with additional small bending stiffness. The main problem in modelling the vibrations does however lay in the aerodynamic forces, which usually are approximated by the forces acting on a rigid cylinder in planar flow. In the present paper, the wind forces are represented by stochastic processes with arbitrary crosscorrelation in space; the case of a Kármán vortex street on a rigid cylinder in planar flow is contained as a limit case in this approach. The authors believe that this new view of the problem may yield useful results, particularly also concerning the reliability of the lines and the probability of fatigue damages.  相似文献

Summary This paper discusses the problem of critical-flow cross-sections in vortex flows. It is shown that there are two different types of vortex flows, A-type and B-type vortices (say). An A-type vortex approaches its critical flow state as its cross-sectional area increases and departs from the critical state as the cross-sectional area is decreased. This property is associated with the particular dependence of total pressure and circulation on the stream function, and it holds for both subcritical and supercritical A-type vortices. On the other hand, both subcritical and supercritical B-type vortices approach their critical flow states as their cross-sectional areas are decreased and depart from their critical states for increasing cross-sectional area. As was shown by Benjamin, setting the first variation of the flow force with respect to the stream function equal to zero leads to Euler's equation of motion. The second variation also vanishes if the corresponding flow state is critical. In this case the sign of the third variation decides whether the flow is an A-type or a B-type vortex. Within the framework of inviscid-fluid flow theory the type of a vortex is preserved unless vortex breakdown occurs. Making use of the knowledge that vortex flows are controlled by two different types of critical-flow cross-sections a variety of vortex flow phenomena are investigated, including the two types of inlet vortices that are observed upstream of jet engines, the behavior of vortex valves, the flow characteristics of liquid-fuel atomizers and the bath tub vortex.  相似文献

The vortex formation and shedding behind bluff structures is influenced by fluid flow parameters such as, Reynolds number, surface roughness, turbulence level, etc. and structural parameters such as, mass ratio, frequency ratio, damping ratio, etc. When a structure is flexibly mounted, the Kármán vortex street formed behind the structure gives rise to vortex induced oscillations. The control of these flow induced vibrations is of paramount practical importance for a wide range of designs. An analysis of flow patterns behind these structures would enable better understanding of wake properties and their control. In the present study, flow past a smooth circular cylinder is numerically simulated by coupling the mass, momentum conservation equations along with a dynamical evolution equation for the structure. An active flow control strategy based on zero net mass injection is designed and implemented to assess its efficacy. A three actuator system in the form of suction and blowing slots are positioned on the cylinder surface. A single blowing slot is located on the leeward side of the cylinder, while two suction slots are positioned at an angle α = 100°. This system is found to effectively annihilate the vortex induced oscillations, when the quantum of actuations is about three times the free stream velocity. The dynamic adaptability of the proposed control strategy and its ability to suppress vortex induced oscillations is verified. The exact quantum of actuation involved in wake control is achieved by integrating a control equation to decide the actuator response in the form of a closed loop feed back system. Simulations are extended to high Reynolds number flows by employing eddy viscosity based turbulence models. The three actuator system is found to effectively suppress vortex induced oscillations.  相似文献

In this article, we present three dimensional CFD study of turbulent vortex flow in an annular passage using OpenFOAM 1.6. The vortex flow is generated by introducing the flow through a tangential entry to the passage. For the analysis presented in this article, turbulence was modeled using the Rε/k − ε model, in addition, a comparison between such model with the standard k − ε model was conducted and discussed. The main characteristics of the flow such as vortex structure and recirculation zone were investigated. It was found that flow is subjected to Rankine vortex structure with three forced vortex regimes and a free vortex region near to the outer wall. The phenomenon of vortex decay was investigated by depicting the swirl number trend along the axial direction of the flow domain. It was found that the vortex decay is subjected to an exponential decay behavior. New coefficients for the exponential decay correlation were derived based on local values of velocity components in different radial planes.  相似文献

The total transient entropy generation of a system that consists of a liquid vortex within a hollow cylinder as a heat source is investigated in this article. The hollow cylinder insulates the liquid vortex, and generates an air vacuum above the vortex which raises its level within the cylinder. The liquid vortex, at a volume of 20% and 60%, partially fills the hollow cylinder. In both cases, the heat transfer was partially established between the inner surface of the hollow cylinder and the vortex liquid. This analysis focused on the transient exchange of entropy generation between the cylinder and fluid. The heat exchange between the hollow heated cylinder and the fluids takes 15 s. The analysis of entropy generated includes only thermal irreversibility of this system; hydraulic irreversibility is neglected.  相似文献

The problem of flow of a perfect fluid from a slit separating two parallel planes is given a mathematical formulation for the case of a submerged jet, as well as for the case of a flow with a free boundary. Various types of flow are classified. The results of numerical solutions are compared with experimental data. The phenomenon of reversal of the vortex sheet which occurs when the flow rate through the slit is reduced, is discussed. The self-modelling problem is solving using the method of matching the asymptotic expansions. A cumulative effect is discovered, namely that the rate of penetration of a narrow central part of the self-modelling jet exceeds the rate of flow of the main part of the jet by one order of magnitude.  相似文献

Heat and mass transfer phenomena in annular liquid jets are analyzed at high Reynolds numbers by means of a model derived from the governing equations that takes into account the effects of surface tension and boundary conditions at the gas–liquid interfaces and the large differences between the thermal and mass diffusivities, densities, dynamic viscosities, and thermal conductivities between gases and liquids. The model clearly illustrates the stiffness in both space and time associated with the concentration, linear momentum and energy boundary layers, and the initial cooling of the gases enclosed by the jet when, starting from a steady state where gases are injected into the volume enclosed by the jet at a rate equal to the heat and mass absorption rates by the liquid, gas injection is stopped. It is shown that, owing to the non-linear integrodifferential coupling between the fluid dynamics and heat and mass transfer processes, the pressure of the gases enclosed by the jet may vary in either a monotonic or an oscillatory manner depending on the large number of non-dimensional parameters that govern the heat and mass transfer phenomena. For the underpressurized jets considered here, it is shown that thermal equilibrium is achieved at a much faster rate than that associated with mass transfer, double diffusive phenomena in the liquid may occur, and the mass and volume of the gases enclosed by the jet may increase or decrease as functions of time until a steady equilibrium condition is reached.  相似文献

In this article, we study the problem of low-density gas jet injected into high-density ambient numerically which is important in applications such as fuel injection and leaks. It is assumed that the local rate of entrainment is consisted of two components; one is the component of entrainment due to jet momentum while the other is the component of entrainment due to buoyancy. The integral models of the mass, momentum and concentration fluxes are obtained and transformed to a set of ordinary differential equations using some similarity transformations. The resulting system is solved to determine the centerline quantities which are used to get the mean axial velocity, mean concentration and mean density of the jet. Therefore, the centerline and mean quantities are used together with the governing equation to determine some important turbulent quantities such as, cross-stream velocity, Reynolds stress, velocity-concentration correlation, turbulent eddy viscosity and turbulent eddy diffusivity. Throughout this paper the developed model is verified by comparing the present results with experimental results and jet/plume theory from the literature.

Self-oscillatory flows in aerodynamics and astrophysics are studied. The two-dimensional compressible gas equations are solved using the implicit Runge-Kutta scheme of the third order with respect to the inviscid terms and of the second order with respect to the viscous terms. An algebraic Cebeci-Smith turbulence model is used. Weakly unsteady and strongly unsteady flow regimes are observed. The former occur in a supersonic flow past a cylinder with a front projection and in the heliosphere. Such flows became stable when the turbulent diffusion is taken into account. The latter flows occur when a supersonic jet meets an obstacle and when such a jet penetrates a cavity. In these flows, the amplitude of oscillations slightly decreases when the turbulent diffusion is taken into account.  相似文献

Viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluids can be achieved by adding a small amount of polymer additives to a Newtonian fluid. In this paper, numerical simulations are used to investigate the influence of such polymer additives on the behavior of flow past a circular cylinder. A numerical method is proposed that discretizes the non-linear viscoelastic system on a uniform Cartesian grid, with a penalization method to model the presence of the cylinder. The drag of the cylinder and the flow behavior under the effect of different Reynolds numbers (Re), Weissenberg numbers (Wi) and polymer viscosity ratios (ε) are studied. Numerical results show that different flow characteristics are exhibited in different parameter zones. The polymer viscosity ratio plays an important role at low Weissenberg and Reynolds numbers, but as the Reynolds and Weissenberg numbers increase, the influence of ε weakens. The drag force of the cylinder is mostly affected by the Reynolds and Weissenberg numbers. At low Reynolds numbers, the drag of the cylinder and the flow fields are only affected by a large value of Wi when the elastic forces are strong. Non-trivial drag reduction occurs only when there is vortex shedding in the wake flow, whereas drag enhancement happens when the vortex shedding is inhibited.  相似文献

The changes in the flow properties under the action of electromagnetic body forces are investigated numerically for ferrofluid flow past a circular cylinder. Ferrofluid is modeled as both a Newtonian and a non-Newtonian Power-Law fluid. Magnetic forces are applied by placing magnets at different locations on the surface of the cylinder. The magnetostatic effects on the structure of the wake region, on drag reduction and on vortex formation length and frequency are shown and compared in terms of Reynolds number, interaction parameter, Power-Law index and magnet location. It is shown that the increase in the interaction parameter reduces drag for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian model. This decrease is observed to be higher for shear thinning and lower for shear thickening fluid compared to Newtonian case. It is also shown that vortex street formation in the wake region behind the cylinder may be delayed under high magnetic effects. The Strouhal number is higher for shear thinning case at both low and high Reynolds numbers, and lower for shear thickening case at high Reynolds numbers, compared to Newtonian fluid. The vortex formation frequency also decreases under the action of the magnetic field in all cases, however the vortex formation length increases. Placing the magnet towards the front region of the cylinder increases considerably the drag coefficient for both Newtonian and non-Newtonian model. This increase in drag coefficient is higher in the shear thinning fluid and lower in the shear thickening fluid compared to the Newtonian case.  相似文献

The two-dimensional nonequilibrium hypersonic free jet boundary layer gas flow in the near wake of a body is studied using a closed system of macroscopic equations obtained (as a thin-layer version) from moment equations of kinetic origin for a polyatomic single-component gas with internal degrees of freedom. (This model is can be used to study flows with strong violations of equilibrium with respect to translational and internal degrees of freedom.) The solution of the problem under study (i.e., the kinetic model of a nonequilibrium homogeneous polyatomic gas flow in a free jet boundary layer) is shown to be related to the known solution of the well-studied simpler problem of a Navier-Stokes free jet boundary layer, and a method based on this relation is proposed for solving the former problem. It is established that the gas flow velocity distribution along the separating streamline in the kinetic problem of a free jet boundary layer coincides with the distribution obtained by solving the Navier-Stokes version of the problem. It is found that allowance for the nonequilibrium nature of the flow with respect to the internal and translational degrees of freedom of a single-component polyatomic gas in a hypersonic free jet boundary layer has no effect on the base pressure and the wake angle.  相似文献

In this work, we study several routes of the transition to chaos from a steady axisymmetric vertical vortex in a rotating cylinder depending on thermal gradients and rotation rates. The analysis is done using nonlinear simulations. For a fixed rotation rate, the chaotic regime appears, as thermal gradients increase, after a sequence of supercritical Hopf bifurcations to periodic, quasiperiodic and chaotic flows in a scenario similar to the Ruelle–Takens–Newhouse route to chaos. For moderate values of the rotation rate we find vortices that tilt and move away from the center of the cylinder in a periodic, quasiperiodic and finally chaotic movement around the central axis. For larger rotation rates the axisymmetric vortex splits into two symmetric vortices that move periodically around the central axis, and lose the symmetry merging again in one non-axisymmetric vortex that moves around the central axis quasiperiodically and later chaotically. The transitions to chaos when the rotation rate is varied at fixed thermal gradients reveal also the appearance of periodic, quasiperiodic and chaotic states in different routes. Tilted single vortices, double vortices and more complex structures with multiple vortices are reported in this case. The transitions are studied through a force balance analysis. Results are of interest as they connect to the behavior of some atmospheric vertical vortices.  相似文献
