The reaction of methyl groups with acyl chlorides is described for the first time in the pyrimidine series. The corresponding ketones — 6-methyl-4-phenacylpyrimidines — have been obtained from 4,6-dimethylpyrimidine and chlorides or aromatic carboxylic acids. More than twenty 13- to 55-membered oligo(poly)nucleotides have been synthesized by the H-phosphonate solid-phase method in the manual variant using an original procedure. From the oligonucleotides obtained, seven DNA duplexes coding immunodominant epitopes of HIV-1 proteins have been formed: 598–609 and 737–748 gp41, 91–115 and 105–115 gag, and 940–951 pol and a number of its mutants. The ligase assembly and polymerization of the DNA duplexes obtained has been carried out. The efficiency of ligation amounted to from 60 to 90%. The CNDO method has been used to investigate a new autocatalytic reaction of reduction of alcohol solutions of platinum(IV) halides by phosphine, leading to the formation of products of O-phosphorylation — trialkyl phosphites — at low temperature (20–50°C) and products of C-phosphorylation — trihydroxyalkylphosphines — at high temperature (60–90°C). It was shown by comparing the metalligand and ligand-ligand bond energies in haloalcohol phosphine complexes of platinum(IV) and platinum(II) that alkoxylation proceeds through a step of deprotonation of the alcohol with nucleophilic assistance and introduction of phosphine at the metal-oxygen bond, whereas hydroxyalkylation includes a step of -elimination of alkoxide hydrogen and insertion of phosphine at the metalcarbon bond. A hypothesis concerning the formation of associates between intermediate complexes and cations has been introduced in order to account for the experimental dependence of the rate constant of the oxidation of phosphine by Cu(II) halides on the nature of the cation in the salt MCl2 (M = Mn, Co, Ni). The quantum-chemical characteristics of the systems formed have been calculated by the Mulliken—Wolfsberg—Helmholz-SCCC method. A method has been developed for the quantitative determination of triterpene glycosides — stichoposides — in the tissues of the Far Eastern holothurianStichopus japonicus Selenka. The quantitative determination of the combined triterpene glycosides was based on the isolation of a glycosidic fraction from an ethanolic extract on a column of Polikhrom-1 with subsequent spectrophotometry at 268 nm of the product formed as the result of the reaction of the glycosides with 1 N NaOH. Summary The role of the tryptophan residues in the L-asparaginase molecule has been studied by the method of chemical modification with N-bromosuccinimide, and it has been established that in an acid medium this reagent modifies all four tryptophan residues present in the molecule, completely suppressing the activity of the enzyme.The substrate — L-asparagine — and a competing inhibitor — S-benzyl-N-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-cysteine — protect the L-asparaginase from the action of N-bromosuccinimide, which shows the role of the tryptophan in the catalytic center of the L-asparaginase.Institute of Organic Synthesis, Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR. The rates of the photochemical oxidation of quinazoline alkaloids — deoxypeganine, peganine, pentamethylenequinazoline, and peganol — to the corresponding oxo derivatives have been studied. It has been shown by HPLC that the oxidation of deoxypeganine proceeds through a stage of the formation of a carbinolamine (peganol); in the case of its hydrochloride, the reaction takes place by the same scheme but four times more slowly. Tetra- and pentamethylenequinazolines have been synthesized and information on their melting points in the literature has been corrected.
