We present a novel, versatile, and simple solution-based routine to produce soft, nanosized Janus particles with tunable structural and physical properties at high volume yield. This process is based on the cross-linking of compartments within precisely defined multicompartment micelles (MCMs), which are themselves formed by the self-assembly of ABC triblock terpolymers. Therein, the C blocks form the stabilizing corona emanating from B compartments, which in turn reside on an A core. Cross-linking of the B compartments allows to permanently fixate the phase-separated state and dissolution in a good solvent for all blocks breaks up the MCMs into single Janus particles. They now consist of a core of cross-linked B blocks and two phase-separated hemispheres of A and C. The process gives access to unprecedented structural features such as tunable core diameter and control over the Janus balance ranging from dominant A side to equal hemispheres to dominant C side. We demonstrate that this simple one-pot approach can be extended to a range of triblock terpolymers with different block lengths and block chemistries to furnish a library of tailor-made Janus particles with widely tunable physical properties. Such a diversity and simplicity has remained unreachable with our previously developed approach using the controlled cross-linking of bulk morphologies. We show that this new synthetic route can be upscaled to a high volume yield of 10 wt %, thereby enabling large-scale applications. We further demonstrate the effect of the Janus balance on colloidal self-assembly. Janus particles with a dominant hydrophobic and a small hydrophilic patch aggregate into large clusters in water, but merely di- or trimerize in chloroform. 相似文献
Understanding the fundamental behavior of chemically anisotropic Janus and patchy particles at fluid interfaces enables utilization of these colloids as solid surfactants for stabilization of emulsions and as building blocks for fabrication of functional and responsive materials. Here, we review recent progress on understanding the combined effects of particle–interface and particle–particle interactions on the surface activity and organization of Janus and patchy particles at fluid interfaces. We also highlight recent developments that harness these fundamental properties for applications in self-assembly and emulsion stabilization, and discuss some of the outstanding questions that warrant future investigation. The progress in the field opens new opportunities to pursue techniques for controlling interfacial rheology, directed motion, and the formulation of novel soft materials. 相似文献
Recent years have seen an increased interest in the use of ABC triblock terpolymers to bottom‐up assemble multicompartment patchy nanoparticles. Despite these experimental and theoretical efforts, the applications of polymer‐based patchy nanoparticles remain rather limited. One of the major challenges that eclipses their potential is the lack of knowledge to selectively encapsulate cargoes within different compartments that are separated in the nanometer length scale. Here, strategies are reported to segregate two chemically distinct molecules in either the patches or core compartment of patchy nanoparticles that bear a (bioactive) sugar corona. The potential use of these bioactive patchy nanoparticles containing compartmentalized cargoes for simultaneous drug delivery with real‐time release monitoring capabilities is further demonstrated. 相似文献
Microfluidic production of multicompartmental emulsion droplets and particles has received considerable attention of late. In particular, droplets having two physically and chemically distinct segments (so-called Janus droplets) and the anisotropic particles synthesized from these droplets, are becoming increasingly popular because of their novel and promising properties, which make them suitable for use in numerous applications, including for controlled drug release, display devices, and self-assembly. So far, a range of interesting anisotropies have been accorded to Janus droplets and particles via microfluidics; these span from chromatic, magnetic, and hydrophobic–hydrophilic characteristics to selective degradation properties. Here, we summarize and discuss the recent trends related to Janus droplets and particles produced through microfluidic processing. We also review the parallelization technologies being developed for scaling up microfluidic emulsification in the industry. 相似文献
Although the concept of Janus particles was raised in the early 1990s, the related research has not attracted considerable interest until recently due to the special properties and applications of these colloidal particles as well as the advances in new fabrications. Janus particles can be divided into three categories: polymeric, inorganic, and polymeric-inorganic, and each kind of Janus particles can be spherical, dumbbell-like, half raspberry-like, cylindrical, disk-like, or any of a variety of other shapes. Different Janus particles may share common preparation principles or require specific fabrication processes, and may have different assembly behaviours and properties. This critical review discusses the main fabrication methods of the three kinds of Janus particles, and then highlights the important properties and applications of these Janus particles developed in recent years, and finally proposes some perspectives on the future of Janus particle research and development. 相似文献
In chemical functionalization of colloidal particles, the functional moieties are generally distributed rather homogeneously on the particle surface. Recently, a variety of synthetic protocols have been developed in which particle functionalization may be carried out in a spatially controlled fashion, leading to the production of structurally asymmetrical particles. Janus particles represent the first example in which the two hemispheres exhibit distinctly different chemical and physical properties, which is analogous to the dual‐faced Roman god, Janus. Whereas a variety of methods have been reported for the preparation of (sub)micron‐sized polymeric Janus particles, it has remained challenging for the synthesis and (unambiguous) structural characterization of much smaller nanometer‐sized Janus particles. Herein, several leading methods for the preparation of nanometer‐sized Janus particles are discussed and the important properties and applications of these Janus nanoparticles in electrochemistry, sensing, and catalysis are highlighted. Some perspectives on research into functional patchy nanoparticles are also given. 相似文献
We present a novel strategy to fabricate anisotropic multicompartment Janus capsules by embedding larger containers into a soft poly-L-lysine/hyaluronic acid (PLL/HA) polymeric film, followed by adsorption of smaller containers on top of their unmasked surface. This research is also attractive for developing substrates for cell cultures. 相似文献
Multicompartment micelles, especially those with highly symmetric surfaces such as patchy-like, patchy, and Janus micelles, have tremendous potential as building blocks of hierarchical multifunctional nanomaterials. One of the most versatile and powerful methods to obtain patchy multicompartment micelles is by the solution-state self-assembly of linear triblock copolymers. In this article, we applied the simulated annealing method to study the self-assembly of ABC linear terpolymers in C-selective solvents. Simulations predict a variety of patchy and patchy-like multicompartment micelles with high symmetry and also yield a detailed phase diagram to reveal how to control the patchy multicompartment micelle morphologies precisely. The phase diagram demonstrates that the internal segregated micellar structure depends on the ratio between the volume fractions of the two solvophobic blocks and their incompatibility, whereas the overall micellar shape depends on the copolymer concentration. The relationship between the interfacial energy, stretching energy of chains and the micellar morphology, micellar morphological transition are elucidated by computing the average contact number among the species, the mean square end-to-end distances of the whole terpolymers, the AB blocks in the terpolymers, the AB diblock copolymers, and angle distribution of terpolymers. The anchoring effect of the solvophilic C block on micellar structures is also examined by comparing the morphologies formed from ABC terpolymers and AB diblock copolymers. 相似文献
Emulsion science has recently experienced several profound changes. At first, interfacial thermodynamics has been found to play a significant role in the behavior of multiple emulsions, leading to an unexpected effect on their traditional medium energy preparation as well as to an extension of their preparation into large volumes. In order to illustrate these changes, the present article is initiated by a brief review of the correlation between the equilibrium interfacial tensions and the configuration of Janus emulsions prepared by one-step vibrational mixing, and extends to the phase inversion of Janus droplets inside its interfacial tension range, followed by an assessment of the progress in the preparation of Janus emulsions and their application to fabricate complex anisotropic particles in scale. 相似文献
Synthetic asymmetrical systems, Janus particles and patchy particles, are capable of undergoing hierarchical assembly processes that mimic those of Nature, to serve as switchable devices, optical probes, phase-transfer catalysts, and multifunctional drug carriers, each of which benefits from opposing surface patterns that behave differently. Production of nanometer-sized Janus particles that are equipped with efficient chemistries remains a challenge. A robust Janus-faced polymer nanoparticle framework that presents two orthogonally click-reactive surface chemistries has been generated by a recyclable strategy that involves reactive functional group transfer by templating against gold nanoparticle substrates. This anisotropic functionalization approach is compatible with a wide range of soft materials, providing Janus nanoparticles for the construction of dual-functionalized devices by accurately controlling chemical functionality at the nanoscopic level. 相似文献
We develop a new strategy to prepare quantum dot (QD) barcode particles by polymerizing double-emulsion droplets prepared in capillary microfluidic devices. The resultant barcode particles are composed of stable QD-tagged core particles surrounded by hydrogel shells. These particles exhibit uniform spectral characteristics and excellent coding capability, as confirmed by photoluminescence analyses. By using double-emulsion droplets with two inner droplets of distinct phases as templates, we have also fabricated anisotropic magnetic barcode particles with two separate cores or with a Janus core. These particles enable optical encoding and magnetic separation, thus making them excellent functional barcode particles in biomedical applications. 相似文献
Multifunctional Janus particles have a variety of applications in a wide range of fields. However, to achieve many of these applications, high-throughput, low-cost techniques are needed to synthesize these particles with precise control of the various structural/physical/chemical properties. Microfluidics provides a unique platform to fabricate Janus particles using carefully controlled liquid flow in microfluidic channels to form Janus droplets and various types of solidification methods to solidify them into Janus particles. In this Focus article, we summarize the most recent representative works on Janus particle fabrication in microfluidics. The applications of Janus particles in biomedical areas are emphasized. We believe that microfluidics-enabled multifunctional Janus particles could resolve multiple prevalent issues in biomedicine (e.g., disease monitoring at an early stage, high-throughput bioassays, therapeutic delivery) if persistent effort and collaboration are devoted to this direction. 相似文献
Anisotropic polymer particles such as Janus particles have attracted significant attention in recent years because of their unique properties and unusual self‐assembly behavior. Most anisotropic polymer particles synthesized so far, however, only have different chemical regions compartmentalized on the particles. It remains a great challenge to fabricate anisotropic polymer particles with different shapes within a single particle. A novel approach is developed to prepare anisotropic polymer particles that contain two hemispheres with different curvatures by annealing polystyrene microspheres on poly(vinyl alcohol) films. During the annealing process, the polymer microspheres gradually sink into the polymer films and transform to asymmetric polymer particles, driven by the surface and interfacial tensions of the polymers. Selective removal techniques are also used to confirm the morphologies of the asymmetric particles.
This work describes a novel and scalable colloid chemistry strategy to fabricate gold semishells based on the selective growth of gold on Janus silica particles (500 nm in diameter) partly functionalized with amino groups. The modulation of the geometry of the Janus silica particles allows us to tune the final morphology of the gold semishells. This method also provides a route to fabricating hollow gold semishells through etching of the silica cores with hydrofluoric acid. The optical properties were characterized by visible near-infrared (vis-NIR) spectroscopy and compared with simulations performed using the boundary element method (BEM). These revealed that the main optical features are located beyond the NIR region because of the large core size. 相似文献
