The short wavelength density fluctuation of DLPC (dilaurylphosphatidylcholine) bilayers close to full hydration has been studied by the inelastic x-ray scattering technique below and above the main transition temperature. The analysis based on a generalized three effective eigenmode theory allows us to construct the dispersion relation of the high frequency sound mode for the first time. The marked softening of the excitation near k = 14 nm(-1), corresponding to the lipid chain-chain correlation peak in the structure factor, in the L(alpha) phase implies prevalent occurrences of short-wavelength in-plane motions of lipid chains that might be of importance for transportation of small molecules across membranes.  相似文献

We have studied the collective short wavelength dynamics in deuterated 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phoshatidylcholine (DMPC) bilayers by inelastic neutron scattering. The corresponding dispersion relation variant Planck's over 2pi omega(Q) is presented for the gel and the fluid phase of this model system. The temperature dependence of the inelastic excitations indicates a phase coexistence between the two phases over a broad range and leads to a different assignment of excitations from that reported in a preceding inelastic x-ray scattering study [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 740 (2001)]]. As a consequence, we find that the minimum in the dispersion relation is actually deeper in the gel than in the fluid phase. Finally, we can clearly identify an additional nondispersive (optical) mode predicted by molecular dynamics simulations [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 238101 (2001)]].  相似文献

Achieving comprehensive information on thin film lattice dynamics so far has eluded well established spectroscopic techniques. We demonstrate here the novel application of grazing incidence inelastic x-ray scattering combined with ab initio calculations to determine the complete elastic stiffness tensor, the acoustic and low-energy optic phonon dispersion relations of thin wurtzite indium nitride films. Indium nitride is an especially relevant example, due to the technological interest for optoelectronic and solar cell applications in combination with other group III nitrides.  相似文献

The five independent elastic moduli of single-crystalline hcp cobalt were determined by inelastic x-ray scattering to 39 GPa and compared to ultrasonic measurements and first principles calculations. In general the agreement is good, in particular, for the evolution of the longitudinal sound velocity in the a-c plane. This confirms the calculations, suggesting that a similar evolution is valid for hcp iron, the main constituent of the Earth's inner core, up to the highest investigated pressure. Our results represent an important benchmark to further refine ab initio calculations.  相似文献

We analyze a set of high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) spectra from H2O measured at T=259, 273, and 294 K using two different phenomenological models. Model I, called the "dynamic cage model," combines the short time in-cage dynamics described by a generalized Enskog kinetic theory with a long-time cage relaxation dynamics described by an alpha relaxation. This model is appropriate for supercooled water where the cage effect is dominant and the existence of an alpha relaxation is evident from molecular-dynamics (MD) simulation data of extended simple point charge (SPC/E) model water. Model II is essentially a generalized hydrodynamic theory called the "three effective eigenmode theory" by de Schepper et al. 11. This model is appropriate for normal liquid water where the cage effect is less prominent and there is no evidence of the alpha relaxation from the MD data. We use the model I to analyze IXS data at T=259 K (supercooled water). We successfully extract the Debye-Waller factor, the cage relaxation time from the long-time dynamics, and the dispersion relation of high-frequency sound from the short time dynamics. We then use the model II to analyze IXS data at all three temperatures, from which we are able to extract the relaxation rate of the central mode and the damping of the sound mode as well as the dispersion relation for the high-frequency sound. It turns out that the dispersion relations extracted from the two models at their respective temperatures agree with each other giving the high-frequency sound speed of 2900+/-300 m/s. This is to be compared with a slightly higher value reported previously, 3200+/-320 m/s, by analyzing similar IXS data with a phenomenological-damped harmonic oscillator model 22. This latter model has traditionally been used exclusively for the analysis of inelastic scattering spectra of water. The k-dependent sound damping and central mode relaxation rate extracted from our model analyses are compared with the known values in the hydrodynamic limit.  相似文献

Off-diagonal elements ?-1 (q, q + gh, ω) of the inverse dielectric matrix are shown to be measurable by means of inelastic scattering of X-ray photons from two different modes of the wave field, which is generated within the analyzer of a Laue-case X-ray interferometer at the interference position.  相似文献

We have studied the effects of multiple-wave diffraction in a novel optical scheme recently published by Shvyd'ko et?al. utilizing Bragg diffraction of x?rays in backscattering geometry from asymmetrically cut crystals for achieving energy resolutions beyond the intrinsic width of the Bragg reflection. By numerical simulations based on dynamic x-ray diffraction and by experimentation involving two-dimensional angular scans of the back-reflecting crystal, multiple-wave diffraction was found to contribute up to several tens percent loss of efficiency but can be avoided without degrading the energy resolution of the original scheme by careful choice of azimuthal orientation of the diffracting crystal surface and by tilting of the crystal perpendicular to the dispersion plane.  相似文献

We report a study of electronic excitations in manganites exhibiting a range of ground states, using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Mn K edge. Excitations with temperature dependent changes correlated with the magnetism were observed as high as 10 eV. By calculating Wannier functions, and finite-q response functions, we associate this dependence with intersite d-d excitations. The calculated dynamical structure factor is found to be similar to the RIXS spectra.  相似文献

The use of momentum-resolved inelastic x-ray scattering with meV energy resolution to study the high-frequency atomic dynamics in disordered systems is here reviewed. The typical realization of this experiment is described together with some common models used to interpret the measured spectra and to extract parameters of interest for the investigation of disordered systems. With the help of some selected examples, the present status of the field is discussed. Particular attention is given to those results which are still open for discussion or controversial, and which will require further development of the technique to be fully solved. Such an instrumental development seems nowadays possible at the light of recently proposed schemes for advanced inelastic x-ray scattering spectrometers. To cite this article: G. Monaco, C. R. We have investigated the lattice dynamics of a wurtzite GaN single crystal by inelastic x-ray scattering. Several dispersion branches and phonons at high-symmetry points have been measured, including the two zone-center Raman- and infrared-inactive silent modes. The experiments have been complemented by ab initio calculations. They are in very good agreement with our measurements, not only for phonon energies, but also for scattering intensities, thus validating the correctness of the eigenvectors. Other phenomenological and ab initio theories exhibit significant differences.  相似文献

I present a tractable theory for the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) of magnons. The low-energy transition operator is written as a product of local spin operators and fundamental x-ray absorption spectral functions. This leads to simple selection rules. The scattering cross section linear (quadratic) in spin operators is proportional to the fundamental magnetic circular (linear) dichroic spectral function. RIXS is a novel tool to measure magnetic quasiparticles (magnons) and the incoherent spectral weight, as well as multiple magnons up to very high energy losses, in small samples, thin films, and multilayers, complementary to neutron scattering.  相似文献

We have measured the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra at the Cu L3 edge in a variety of cuprates. Exploiting a considerably improved energy resolution (0.8 eV) we recorded significant dependencies on the sample composition and orientation, on the scattering geometry, and on the incident photon polarization. The RIXS final states correspond to two families of electronic excitations, having local (dd excitations) and nonlocal (charge-transfer) character. The dd energy splitting can be estimated with a simple crystal field model. The RIXS at the L3 edge demonstrates here a great potential, thanks to the resonance strength and to the large 2p spin-orbit splitting.  相似文献
