Let be an algebraically closed field of characteristic and be an almost simple group or a central extension of an almost simple group. An important problem in representation theory is to classify the subgroups of and -modules such that the restriction is irreducible. For example, this problem is a natural part of the program of describing maximal subgroups in finite classical groups. In this paper we investigate the case of the problem where is the Schur's double cover or .

Pfaffians of matrices with entries z[i, j]/(xi + xj), or determinants of matrices with entries z[i, j]/(xi - xj), where the antisymmetrical indeterminates z[i, j] satisfy the Pliicker relations, can be identified with a trace in an irreducible representation of a product of two symmetric groups. Using Young's orthogonal bases, one can write explicit expressions of such Pfaffians and determinants, and recover in particular the evaluation of Pfaffians which appeared in the recent literature. 相似文献

We establish upper and lower bounds on the dimension of the space spanned by the symmetric powers of the natural character of generalized symmetric groups. We adapt the methods of Savitt and Stanley from [4] to obtain bounds both over the complex numbers and in prime characteristic. 相似文献

We present a Las Vegas algorithm which, for a given black-box group known to be isomorphic to a symmetric or alternating group, produces an explicit isomorphism with the standard permutation representation of the group. This algorithm has applications in computations with matrix groups and permutation groups.
In this paper, we handle the case when the degree of the standard permutation representation is part of the input. In a sequel, we shall treat the case when the value of is not known in advance.
As an important ingredient in the theoretical basis for the algorithm, we prove the following result about the orders of elements of : the conditional probability that a random element is an -cycle, given that , is at least .

We answer affirmatively the following question of Derek Holt: Given integers , can one, in a simple manner, find a finite set and permutations such that has order , has order and has order ? The method of proof enables us to prove more general results (Theorems 2 and 3).

Let be a nonstandard model of Peano Arithmetic with domain M and let be nonstandard. We study the symmetric and alternating groups S

of permutations of the set internal to , and classify all their normal subgroups, identifying many externally defined such normal subgroups in the process. We provide
evidence that A

are not split extensions by these normal subgroups, by showing that any such complement if it exists, cannot be a limit of
definable sets. We conclude by identifying an -valued metric on and (where B

This paper outlines an investigation of a class of arc-transitive graphs admitting a finite symmetric group Sn acting primitively on vertices, with vertex-stabilizer isomorphic to the wreath product Sm wr Sr (preserving a partition of {1,2,…n} into r parts of equal size m). Several properties of these graphs are considered, including their correspondence with r × r matrices with constant row- and column-sums equal to m, their girth, and the local action of the vertex-stabilizer. Also, it is shown that the only instance where Sn acts transitively on 2-arcs occurs in the case m = r = 2. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Graph Theory 25: 107–117, 1997 相似文献

A result of Segal states that every complex irreducible representation of a finitely generated nilpotent group G is monomial if and only if G is abelian-by-finite. A conjecture of Parshin, recently proved affirmatively by Beloshapka and Gorchinskii (2016), characterizes the monomial irreducible representations of finitely generated nilpotent groups. This article gives a slightly shorter proof of the conjecture using ideas of Kutzko and Brown. We also give a characterization of the finite-dimensional irreducible representations of two-step nilpotent groups and describe these completely for two-step groups whose center has rank one. 相似文献

It is well-known, that the ring of polynomial invariants of the alternating group has no finite SAGBI basis with respect to the lexicographical order for any number of variables . This note proves the existence of a nonsingular matrix such that the ring of polynomial invariants , where denotes the conjugate of with respect to , has a finite SAGBI basis for any . 相似文献

We give a topological interpretation of the highest weight representations of Kac-Moody groups. Given the unitary form G of a Kac-Moody group (over C), we define a version of equivariant K-theory, KG on the category of proper G-CW complexes. We then study Kac-Moody groups of compact type in detail (see Section 2 for definitions). In particular, we show that the Grothendieck group of integrable highest weight representations of a Kac-Moody group G of compact type, maps isomorphically onto , where EG is the classifying space of proper G-actions. For the affine case, this agrees very well with recent results of Freed-Hopkins-Teleman. We also explicitly compute for Kac-Moody groups of extended compact type, which includes the Kac-Moody group E10. 相似文献

We define exact functors from categories of Harish–Chandra modules for certain real classical groups to finite-dimensional modules over an associated graded affine Hecke algebra with parameters. We then study some of the basic properties of these functors. In particular, we show that they map irreducible spherical representations to irreducible spherical representations and, moreover, that they preserve unitarity. In the case of split classical groups, we thus obtain a functorial inclusion of the real spherical unitary dual (with “real infinitesimal character”) into the corresponding p-adic spherical unitary dual. 相似文献

In this paper we study the branching law for the restriction from SU(n,m) to SO(n,m) of the minimal representation in the analytic continuation of the scalar holomorphic discrete series. We identify the group decomposition with the spectral decomposition of the action of the Casimir operator on the subspace of S(O(n)×O(m))-invariants. The Plancherel measure of the decomposition defines an L2-space of functions, for which certain continuous dual Hahn polynomials furnish an orthonormal basis. It turns out that the measure has point masses precisely when n−m>2. Under these conditions we construct an irreducible representation of SO(n,m), identify it with a parabolically induced representation, and construct a unitary embedding into the representation space for the minimal representation of SU(n,m). 相似文献

This is the continuation of our previous work (Demir, Geom. Dedicata 105, 189–207, 2004). In this paper, we study extensions between admissible representations of the isometry groups of regular trees. We use the results of Demir, (Geom. Dedicata 105, 189–207, 2004) to show, following Schneider and Stuhler (J. Reine. Angew. Math. 436, 19–32, 1993) in the p-adic case, that extensions between admissible representations of G are finite-dimensional. 相似文献
