It has previously been shown that alcohol ethoxylates readily undergo autoxidation and that one of the major oxidation products is the surfactant aldehyde, i.e. an ethoxylate carrying a –CH2CHO group at the terminal end of the polyoxyethylene chain. In this work the cloud point, phase behavior and aggregation characteristics of the surfactant aldehyde produced by oxidation of C12H25(OCH2CH2)5OH (C12E5) are determined and compared with the values obtained with the parent surfactant. It was found that the physico–chemical behavior of the two species was very similar, which indicates that a considerable portion of the aldehyde group is in hydrated state, i.e. the surfactant aldehyde consists of a mixture of aldehyde in carbonyl form and the corresponding geminal diol. The cloud point of the surfactant aldehyde decreased rapidly with time, even when it was stored at low temperature. Also the parent surfactant and its homologue C12E6 exhibited a decrease in cloud point during storage. For instance, a 1% aqueous solution of C12E6 showed a cloud point decrease from 62 to 32°C after 4 months storage at 40°C. The addition of foreign material to surfactants shows the change in temperature at which the clouding process occurs. This work evaluates the impact of n-alcohols on Cloud Point (CP) of nonionic surfactant Triton X-114 at variable concentrations. It was found that the CP of pure Triton X-114 shows concentration-dependent variation. The presence of lower alcohols improves CP value whereas the addition of higher alcohols brings down CP with variation as concentration increases. These effects can be clarified in view of the site of the impact of molecular design of added substances on the stability of micelle organization. The foaming ability and foam stability data are also used to discuss the stability of micellar accumulation. Considering CP as a threshold temperature of the solubility, the thermodynamic parameters of the clouding process ΔG0cl, ΔH0cl, and ΔS0cl, have been assessed, using the “Phase Separation Model”. The outcomes of the work demonstrate that the clouding phenomenon of Triton X-114 is an exothermic and non-spontaneous process. 相似文献

Micelle formation of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) was examined in the presence of α,ω-alkanediols applying conductivity measurements. Octanediol and hexanediol promoted the formation of mixed micelles of DTAB and the alcohol, but butanediol interfered with micellization. Analysis of the critical micelle concentration (cmc) based on the lattice model for mixed solution with the Bragg–Williams approximation indicated an unfavorable interaction between alcohol and water and a favorable interaction between the alcohol and surfactant, with the exception of butanediol. The exchange energy between alcohol and water was 0.5kT higher for alkanediol (C2n(OH)2) than for the corresponding regular alcohol (CnOH), which is believed to have resulted from the smaller mixing entropy for the alkanediol than for the corresponding regular alcohol. It was inferred from the analysis that the cmc increase for C4(OH)2 was caused by favorable interaction with water but unfavorable interaction with the micellar surfactant. 相似文献

The mixed micelles of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) with Brij35 and Brij 97 were studied separately by fluorescence measurement using pyrene as fluorescent probe. In the range of 0–1.0 mole fraction (X) of added SDS to Brij solutions, the cmc value of the mixed micelles varies from 0.085 to 8 mmol with Brij 35 and 0.04 to 8 mmol with Brij 97. The aggregation number also changes. A measure of the stability of mixed micelles is also presented. The interaction parameter 12 and the chain–chain contribution parameter (B1) are extracted from the analysis of the results. This parameter B1 is related to the standard free energy change associated with the introduction of one ionic species into a nonionic micelle coupled with the release of one nonionic species from the micelle. The clouding behaviour of Brij 97 in the presence of SDS was investigated and the associated thermodynamic parameters of clouding were generated and discussed. 相似文献

A kinetic dialysis technique was used to validate a relationship between monomer taurocholate (TC) concentration and total TC concentration in TC solutions containing 0.15 M NaCl and 0.01 M buffer (pH = 7.4). Based on the experimental data and Mukerjee's equations, the number average degree and the weight average degree of TC aggregates were estimated to be nearly the same (~5), indicating that simple TC micelles were the only aggregates. Furthermore, the TC dimer concentration was quantified to be negligible. According to the validated relationship, aggregation number of 5 for simple TC micelles, and the definition of critical micelle concentration (CMC), a modified monomer‐micelle model was used for describing simple TC micelle formation. Moreover, the CMC value was estimated to be ~6.3 mM, which is consistent with the reported value of ~6.0 mM. 相似文献

Heat capacities per unit volume for a set of nitroalkane + alcohol critical mixtures near their upper consolute point are presented. The selected nitroalkanes were nitromethane and nitroethane whereas the 1-alcohol series from 1-propanol to 1-decanol was studied. The critical anomaly of nitroalkane + non-primary alcohols was also investigated; 2-propanol, 2-pentanol, 3-pentanol and 5-nonanol were chosen to this end. The heat capacity data are obtained at atmospheric pressure as a function of temperature in the homogeneous and heterogeneous regions by means of a differential scanning calorimeter. The exponent and amplitudes that characterises the observed critical anomaly are determined from experimental data, being their values coherent with previous results. In addition, the critical amplitude of the correlation length was calculated using the universality of the two-scale factor. Finally, the changes in the critical parameters as a function of the molecular structure of both nitroalkane and alcohol are analysed. 相似文献

With p-N,N-dimethylaminobenzonitrile (DMABN) as a probe, the variations of the intensity of its second fluorescence emission (Ia) and the corresponding characteristic wavelength (λa) with the surfactant concentration (c), here the examined surfactants (C12TABr, SDS, C12E23, and C12-3-C12·2Br), were measured by Hitachi F4500 fluorescence spectrophotometer. The results showed that both the break points on the Ia–c curve and the minimum of the derivative variation corresponding to the λa–c curve agreed very well with the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of the surfactant in aqueous solution as measured by surface tension technique. Due to strong aggregation of C12-3-C12·2Br in aqueous solution, the information about loose micellar structure could be obtained by its λa–c curve. 相似文献

In the present study, we investigate the self-association and mixed micellization of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and a cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of SDS, CTAB, and mixed (SDS + CTAB) surfactants was measured by electrical conductivity, dye solubilization, and surface tension measurements. The surface properties (viz., C20 (the surfactant concentration required to reduce the surface tension by 20 mN/m), ΠCMC (the surface pressure at the CMC), Γmax (maximum surface excess concentration at the air/water interface), and Amin (the minimum area per surfactant molecule at the air/water interface)) of SDS, CTAB, and (SDS + CTAB) micellar/mixed micellar systems were evaluated. The viscosity of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) solution with or without an additive has been measured continuously as a function of temperature with the help of a vibro-viscometer. The viscosity of the polymer solution showed a gradual decrease initially with increase in temperature until a particular point beyond which there was a sharp decrease in the viscosity, which coincided with the clouding of the solution. The cloud point temperature (CP) of the polymer solution was determined from the first derivative plot of viscosity vs. temperature. Effect of addition of an electrolyte or a surfactant on the CP of HPC solution has also been studied. While a decrease in CP of HPC solution in presence of fluoride, chloride, or bromide ions was observed, presence of iodide or thiocyanide ions led to an increase in the CP. However, presence of an ionic surfactant initially lowered the CP but beyond a particular surfactant concentration a sharp increase in cloud point was observed due to interaction of the surfactant with the polymer. The results suggest that surfactants with longer hydrophobic tail or more hydrophobic groups have more affinity for HPC. 相似文献

O-Dodecyl-N,N′-diisopropylisourea and O-tridecafluorooctyl-N,N′-diisopropylisourea were synthesized by reaction of hydrogenated or fluorinated alcohols onto diisopropylcarbodiimide in quasi-quantitative yields. Adding various hydrogen halides (HCl, HBr, or HI) onto these isoureas enabled one to obtain isoureas hydrohalides with tensioactive properties. The surface properties of both series of hydrogenated and fluorinated surfactants were studied and compared. The influence of the counter-ions onto the surface properties showed that the tensioactive properties were improved in the following increasing order: I < Cl < Br. Fluorinated isourea hydrohalides exhibited better surfactant properties than their hydrogenated homologues. 相似文献

Cyclic alcohols (n = 5‐7) are compounds of distinctive nonplanar structure. Effect of the alcohols on micellization of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in aqueous solution are examined by determining the critical micelle concentration (CMC) by conductometry and the micelle aggregation numbers (Nagg) by fluorometry, respectively. In general, the CMC of SDS decreases with increase in volume of a cyclic alcohol in water and increases further after attaining a minimum value. The Nagg of SDS varies little with small addition of a cyclic alcohol, but decreases when added in sufficient volume. Both the changes of the CMC and Nagg with carbon number in the ring of the alcohols occur irregularly due to their steric reasons and nonplanar nature. The irregularity makes a difference between the cyclic alcohols and their chain counterparts. Based on 1H NMR chemical shift measurements, the cyclic alcohols are found to be solubilized in the palisade layer in SDS micelles. 相似文献

We find that Magtrieve™ (CrO2) catalyzes the oxidation of a wide variety of alcohols with periodic acid as the terminal oxidant. Mild conditions, short reaction times, and facile aqueous work-up make this a most attractive method. Olefins are not oxidized under these conditions; thus alcohols react selectively in the presence of alkenes. Conditions have been optimized with respect to catalyst loading, solvent, and co-oxidant; and the scope of the reaction includes primary and secondary benzylic, allylic, and aliphatic alcohols. 相似文献

An emulsion of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was prepared using poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) of low degree of hydrolysis with a cloud point as a protective colloid. The behaviour of an aqueous solution of PVA with 80% degree of hydrolysis was first investigated in terms of the Huggins constant in viscometry. MMA was polymerized using the PVA at 20 °C, where no abnormality in the aqueous PVA was observed. The change in transmittance of the emulsion observed with a UV–vis photometer revealed that in the case of UV light of wavelength 370 nm, the transmittance decreased markedly at around 30 °C with an increase in temperature, and then increased with a decrease in temperature. The thermosensitive property resulted from PVA with a low degree of hydrolysis with a cloud point, at a higher temperature of which the PVA loses solubility in water owing to weakening of the hydrogen bond between PVA molecules and water. 相似文献

Nine novel sulfate-type hybrid surfactants, CmF2m+1C6H4CH(OSO3Na)CnH2n+1 (FmPHnOS: m=4, 6, 8; n=3, 5, 7; C6H4: p-phenylene), with a benzene ring in their molecules were synthesized. Alkanoyl chlorides were allowed to react with iodobenzene in the presence of aluminum chloride to give the corresponding aromatic ketones. The reaction of the ketones with perfluoroalkyl iodides yielded 1-[4-(perfluoroalkyl)phenyl]-1-alkanones as intermediates. The intermediates were allowed to react with methanol in tetrahydrofuran in the presence of sodium borohydride to yield 1-[4-(perfluoroalkyl)phenyl]-1-alkanols. The desired hybrid surfactants were obtained by the reaction of 1-[4-(perfluoroalkyl)phenyl-1-alkanols with sulfur trioxide/pyridine complex in pyridine and by the subsequent neutralization of the products with sodium hydroxide solution. When compared with the conventional hybrid surfactants, CmF2m+1C6H4COCH(SO3Na)CnH2n+1 (FmHnS: m=4, 6; n=2, 4, 6; C6H4: p-phenylene), the new hybrid surfactants thus synthesized were found to have a comparable ability to lower the surface tension of water and a high hydrophilicity. The cmc of FmPHnOS obeyed Kleven’s rule and their occupied areas per molecule increased with increasing m and n with the values between 0.66 and 1.05 nm2. The aggregation number for FmPHnOS micelles ranged from 6 to 45 and the hydrodynamic radius of the micelles was in the range of 1.4-3.1 nm. 相似文献

We discuss several different directed walk models of a homopolymer adsorbing at a surface when the polymer is subject to an
elongational force which hinders the adsorption. These models have the advantage that, within the generating function approach,
they can often be solved exactly and that in the stretching regime they give a fair representation of the configurational
properties of the polymer. By using combinatorial arguments we analyse how the critical temperature for adsorption depends
on the magnitude of the applied force and show that the order of the adsorption transition changes from continuous to first
order when a force is applied. We discuss which are the minimal ingredients to add into the model in order to obtain a reentrant
phase diagram similar to the one observed in models of DNA mechanical denaturation. Another advantage in using directed walk
models is that they can be generalized to study, to some extent, the adsorption transition of random copolymers. Indeed, despite
the fact that the quenched model cannot be solved exactly we show that a partial knowledge of the full random problem can
be obtained by resorting to an approximation in which the quenched average is approximated by a partial annealing procedure,

Addition of a midblock‐selective oil to an ABA triblock copolymer with a rubbery B‐midblock and thermoplastic A‐endblocks yields a thermoplastic elastomer gel (TPEG) if the oil constitutes the majority blend constituent and a physically crosslinked network, responsible for solid‐like mechanical properties, is retained. These blends typically exhibit a micellar morphology in which the micellar cores are composed of the oil‐incompatible A‐endblocks. Since the micelles serve as crosslink sites, the properties of TPEGs depend on (i) the intrinsic characteristics of the solid‐state endblocks, and (ii) the degree to which the micelles interact through bridged and looped midblocks. In this work, a poly[styrene‐b‐(ethylene‐co‐butylene)‐b‐styrene] triblock copolymer and an aliphatic oil are used to prepare TPEGs into which poly(2,6‐dimethylphenylene oxide) (PPO), a styrene‐compatible homopolymer, is added. The morphologies and bulk properties of these ternary systems are examined by electron microscopy, viscometry, and dynamic rheology. A slight increase in the PPO content in these TPEGs promotes increases in micelle size, confirming that the PPO primarily resides within the micelles, and disordering temperature, signified by an abrupt change in rheological properties. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The 18‐membered mixed‐donor macrocycle 6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,20,21‐decahydro‐5H, 19H‐dibenzo[b,m][1,15,5,8,11]dioxatriazacyclooctadecin‐20‐ol ( L ), which contains N3O3 donor set, was synthesized. Also two nickel(II) complexes of L have been synthesized and characterized by X‐ray crystallography, FT‐IR, UV‐Vis absorption spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The structure of complexes shows an unexpected anion dependence. Reaction of Ni(ClO4)2·6H2O with L afforded [Ni L ](ClO4)2·CH2Cl2 complex in which L uses all donor atoms and acts as a hexadentate ligand so forming a mononuclear nickel(II) complex in distorted octahedral geometry. Contrasting with this, when NiCl2·6H20 is used, the product complex [{Ni L Cl}2(μ‐Cl)2] is dimeric and consists of two Ni L Cl units bridged by two chloride ions. The coordination geometry of each nickel atom is a distorted octahedral. In this complex L is exo‐coordinated via only three nitrogen atoms to a nickel ion, which is bound to two cis bridging chloride and one non‐bridging chloride too. Also complexing properties of L towards Ni(ClO4)2·6H2O and NiCl2·6H20 have been determined by UV‐Vis titration in methanol. The computer treatment of the data confirmed the 1:1 metal to ligand stoichiometry for two complexes in solution and gave reliable values for corresponding stability constants (logK = 3.00 ± 0.02 with Ni(ClO4)2·6H2O and logK = 3.29 ± 0.06 with NiCl2·6H20). 相似文献
