Summary Tervalent gallium can be determined by polarography in alkaline solutions within the concentration range of 2.5×10–5 to 10–3Mole. The solutions should contain 0.1 Mole of KCl and 0.25 Mole of glycine and the pH value should be 7.50 to 8.00. Sodium hydroxide or ammonia may be employed for adjusting the pH value. Owing to the relatively negative reduction potential of tervalent gallium various metals are interfering (Cu, Cd, Pb, Sn, Zn, Ni, Co, especially FeII and Mn). An extraction of GaCl3 with benzene-butyl acetate (41) from 6 N hydrochloric acid solution eliminates these interferences and, at the same time, permits an enrichment of gallium. With a sample weight of 1 g gallium may be determined in minerals, ores, and metals by the method described. The sensitivity is 0.0001%.
