This paper describes the experimental results on the orthogonally polarized mode conversion in a YIG rib channel waveguide, in which a small magnetic field induced around the electrode deposited on the waveguide was used. The dependence of mode conversion efficiency on the coupling length and the effect of a d.c. bias field applied to the waveguide were investigated. The Faraday rotation angle of the fabricated YIG rib channel waveguide was found to be 160° cm–1, which was a reasonable value compared with that in the YIG planar waveguide reported previously. Furthermore, an increase in conversion efficiency and a decrease in switching time were found in the presence of a d.c. magnetic bias field. 相似文献

Wave propagation through curved bends in integrated optical waveguides is governed by the evanescent field and the radiation loss of the eigenmodes. Since these parameters are influenced by the refractive index of the surrounding medium, circular bends in rib waveguides have been successfully employed as chemical sensors for liquids and gases. In this paper the electromagnetic field, the refractive index and the radiation loss of the eigenmodes are precisely determined by a fully vectorial approach based on the method of lines. An axial discretization and Bessel functions of complex order are employed for the rigorous computation of the evanescent field. The intensity distributions of the first modes in a rib waveguide are presented. The influence of the rib height on the sensitivity of the modal index to the refractive index of the surrounding medium is investigated. The results are useful for the optimization of the sensor design. 相似文献

It is shown in this paper that the analysis of rib waveguides by the spectral index method (Sl) is made easier and more convenient by using discrete Fourier series throughout. This produces total agreement with Sl and also enables extremely fast calculations of overlap integrals. 相似文献

Broadband arrayed waveguide gratings on InP are presented using a novel S-shape design. This design was utilized to accommodate
the large free spectral range required for broadband operation. Four and eight channel AWGs with a wavelength channel spacing
of 18 nm are discussed. The output peaks of the AWGs have a wide FWHM of 11 nm which provides insensitive operation to polarization,

A polarization insensitive hollow optical waveguide is proposed. The propagation characteristics of orthogonal polarizations in the hollow waveguide are effectively controlled in simulation to provide polarization insensitivity by tailoring the parameters associated with the two mirrors—a high-index contrast grating (HCG) mirror and a distributed Bragg reflecting (DBR) mirror, on either side of an air-core. 利用一维变周期谐振腔阵列和非线性缓变边界,可以实现光波从脊波导到光子晶体平面波导 (PCW)的高效耦合.基于平面波展开法(PWE)和时域有限差分法(FDTD),深入分析和讨 论了普通脊波导、2D-PCW结构和本征模以及工作模式、缓变边界形状等对耦合效率的影响, 从而得出光波从脊波导到2D-PCW、再返回脊波导的统一图景.指出考虑模式转换和采用缓变 边界条件可以极大提高PCW与脊波导间的耦合效率.对PC-PW边界采用线性和非线性缓变结构 进行了仿真,讨论了边界缓变程度对耦合效率的影响.结果表明,采用模式耦合和PC-PW余弦 缓变边界时的耦合效率在较宽的带宽内超过了95%.

Integrated polarization rotators are known to exhibit stringent fabrication tolerances, which severely handicap their practical application. Here we present a general polarization rotator scheme that enables both the compensation of fabrication errors and wavelength tunability. The scheme is described analytically, and a condition for perfect polarization conversion is established. Simulations of a silicon-on-insulator polarization rotator show polarization extinction ratios in excess of 40 dB even in the presence of large fabrication errors that in a conventional rotator configuration degrade the extinction ratio to below 5 dB. Additionally, wavelength tuning over ±30 nm is shown. 相似文献

We present a new design for beam splitting components employing a silicon-on-insulator rib waveguide structures. In the new design, a high-index thin-film layer is deposited in the rib section to reduce the wave field dispersive tails in the slab section and accordingly render the mode field a confined spot. This in turn improves the beam splitting performance of some conventional waveguide components such as y branches and multimode interference couplers (MMICs), in terms of the excess loss, fiber coupling loss, and compactness of these components. For a 1 x 2 y-branch beam splitter, the excess loss can be as small as 0.43 dB in the new design, which is much lower than that for a conventional rib waveguide structure (which is 1.28 dB). For a 1 x 2 MMIC in our example, the new rib waveguide structure presents an excess loss of 0.064 dB for the TE mode and 0.046 dB for the TM mode, with negligible nonuniformity in dimensions of 30 microm x 1040 microm, whereas its counterpart (i.e., the one with the same dimensions but without a thin-film layer) presents an excess loss of approximately 0.86 dB for both modes. A conventional MMIC must have dimensions larger than 70 microm x 5650 microm to maintain almost the same low excess loss. 相似文献

Two mode-evolution-based low-loss compact-size integrated polarization rotators and transformers are presented. They are designed to fulfill the tasks of rotating mode polarizations between Gaussian-like strip waveguide modes and non-Gaussian-like slotted waveguide modes, as well as the mode transforming between horizontal and vertical slotted waveguides. Consisting of several adiabatic tapers, the presented devices can achieve complete polarization rotations and transformations between different classes of waveguide modes with a device length of tens of micrometers and with a negligible insertion loss. 相似文献

A frequency selective polarization rotator that can rotate the polarization angle of an incident electromagnetic wave at the microwave frequency by 45 is presented. The polarization rotator is based on a two-dimensional periodic array of substrate integrated waveguide cavities, realizing the polarization rotation by coupling the input signal to the output wave through three metallic slots. Two layers of frequency selective surfaces are cascaded by substrate and form the polarization rotator. A vertical slot on the top layer is used to select the horizontal polarization from the incident wave, the vertical and the horizontal slots on the bottom layer are, respectively, used to obtain horizontally and vertically polarized outgoing waves. The two orthogonal outgoing waves are combined to result in the 45~ polarized wave. Both full wave simulation and experimental measurement are carried out, together validating the proposed method. 相似文献

Chalcogenide glasses have shown promise in fabricating mid infrared(MIR) photonic sensing devices due to their excellent optical properties in MIR. necessary to detect all CWDM wavelengths. For In0.5995Ga0.4005As0.8521P0.1479 well there is a 12 channel coverage from 1,270 to 1,490 nm and for the In0.5540Ga0.4460As0.9489P0.0511 well the 14 channel spans from 1,350 to 1,610 nm. A carrier tunneling time of 20 ps along with the transit time limited bandwidth
of 86 GHz gives a 3 dB bandwidth of 41 GHz by optimizing the i-MQW thickness and dopant concentration of the different layers

In this paper, we report on the first successful fabrication, using spin-coating and low-temperature (200 °C) annealing, of
organically modified sol-gel planar optical waveguides on InP substrates. Considering the fact that the sol-gel technique
is simple and cheap, and III-V compound semiconductors are the essential substrate materials for manufacturing data communication
devices, we believe that our demonstration of optical waveguiding in sol-gel-derived waveguides on III-V compound semoconductors
is interesting. It opens the possibility of hybridizating traditional glass or optical-crystal-based integrated optics with
III-V compound semiconductor-based optoelectronics.

Mode-matching and effective index methods are used to analyze single-mode operation of optical rib polymer waveguides. Their single-mode waveguiding conditions are determined. Single-mode rib waveguides fabricated from guest–host polyetherketone are presented. The estimated propagation loss of straight rib-waveguides is 0.7 dB/cm at 1.55 μm.
