Effects of acid rain on soil humic compounds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The modifications induced by acid rain on the solubility, molecular configuration and molecular weight distribution of humic (HA) and fulvic (FA) acids were studied. A natural soil was subjected to simulated acid rain until a soil pH of 4 was obtained; HA and FA acids were then extracted and characterised. The results obtained were compared both with those of natural soil and with those of a soil subjected to acid rain. Elute analysis indicates the continuous release of soluble organic compounds as a consequence of acid rain simulation, although no relationship was found with the process of soil acidification. The yields of HA and FA show that HA values are the same while FA amount is higher in the natural soil; in acid soils their water solubility increases. The molecular weight distribution shows that HA consist of a mixture of compounds of different molecular weights; they are molecules for the most part larger than 100 kDa and their distribution is not changed by soil acidification. FA can be considered to form a much more homogeneous system; in natural soil, the molecules are larger than 50 kDa, while in acidified soil they are for the most part smaller than 3 kDa.  相似文献

Two fractions of both fulvic acids (FA) and humic acid (HA) were prepared by fractionation method of Pierce and Felbeck5 involving acid hydrolysis of soil rests. This step increases recovery of both FA and HA considerably what suggest us need for slight modification of IHSS method in some cases. The weight loss, change in organic carbon content and visible spectra are figures of merit discussed. After detailed characterization these humic substances (HS) will serve as the working standards for study of interactions between organomercurials and organic part of soil.  相似文献

Few studies have so far examined the kinetics and extent of the formation of Fe-colloids in the presence of natural organic ligands. The present study used an experimental approach to investigate the rate and amount of colloidal Fe formed in presence of humic substances, by gradually oxidizing Fe(II) at pH 6.5 with or without humic substances (HS) (in this case, humic acid--HA and fulvic acid--FA). Without HS, micronic aggregates (0.1-1 μm diameter) of nano-lepidocrocite is obtained, whereas, in a humic-rich medium (HA and FA suspensions at 60 and 55 ppm of DOC respectively), nanometer-sized Fe particles are formed trapped in an organic matrix. A proportion of iron is not found to contribute to the formation of nanoparticles since iron is complexed to HS as Fe(II) or Fe(III). Humic substances tend to (i) decrease the Fe oxidation and hydrolysis, and (ii) promote nanometer-sized Fe oxide formation by both inhibiting the development of hydroxide nuclei and reducing the aggregation of Fe nanoparticles. Bioreduction experiments demonstrate that bacteria (Shewanella putrefaciens CIP 80.40 T) are able to use Fe nanoparticles associated with organic matter about eight times faster than in the case of nano-lepidocrocite. This increase in bioreduction rate appears to be related to the presence of humic acids that (i) indirectly control the size, shape and density of oxyhydroxides and (ii) directly enhance biological reduction of nanoparticles by electron shuttling and Fe complexation. These results suggest that, in wetlands but also elsewhere where mixed organic matter-Fe colloids occur, Fe nanoparticles closely associated with organic matter represent a bioavailable Fe source much more accessible for microfauna than do crystallized Fe oxyhydroxides.  相似文献

The stability of C(60) fullerene particles in water affects its mobility, bioavailability, and toxicity to organisms. Natural organic matters (NOMs) have pronounced effects on the aggregation behavior of C(60) fullerene. This study was to examine the effects of NOM structural properties on the aggregation behavior of fullerene water suspension (FWS). Fulvic acid (FA), tannic acid (TA), and two structurally different humic acids (HA1 and HA7) were studied. HA1 and HA7 were sequentially extracted HAs, where HA7 was more hydrophobic than HA1 and had a higher molecular weight. Aggregation was induced by addition of varying amounts of Ca(2+) to the FWS with 2 mg/L of each NOM. The absolute value of zeta potential |ζ| of pure FWS increased after addition of any type of NOM. Addition of Ca(2+) to the FWS+NOM system decreased |ζ| of fullerene almost uniformly for all types of NOM. FWS critical coagulation concentration (CCC) was equal to 14.5, 6.5, 5.4, and 3.7 mM Ca(2+) for HA7, HA1, FA, and TA, respectively. The order of increasing CCCs was positively correlated to the NOMs molecular weight and negatively to their polarity. A nearly constant ζ for FWS+NOM system at a wide range of Ca(2+) concentrations suggested the steric stability rather than electrostatic one. This study highlighted the role of NOM in the fate of manufactured nanoparticles in the environment and linked the structural properties of NOM to their interaction with manufactured nanoparticles.  相似文献

Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) was used to evaluate the average molecular mass of terrestrial humic substances, such as humic (HA) and fulvic (FA) acids from a soil, and humic acid from a lignite (NDL). Their ESI mass spectra, by direct infusion, gave average molecular masses comparable to those previously obtained for aquatic humic materials. The soil HA and FA were further separated in size-fractions by preparative high performance size exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) and analyzed with ESI-MS by both direct infusion and a further on-line analytical HPSEC. Unexpectedly, their average molecular mass was only slightly less than for the bulk sample and, despite different nominal molecular size, did not substantially vary among size-fractions. The values increased significantly (up to around 1200 Da) after on-line analytical HPSEC for the HA bulk sample, at both pH 8 and 4, and for the HA size-fractions when pH was reduced from 8 to 4. It was noticed that HA size-fractions at pH 8 were separated by on-line HPSEC in further peaks showing average masses which progressively increased with elution volume. Furthermore, when the HA and NDL bulk samples were sequentially ultracentrifuged at increasing rotational speed, their supernatants showed mass values which were larger than bulk samples and increased with rotational speed. These variations in mass values indicate that the electrospray ionization is dependent on the composition of the humic molecular mixtures and increases when their heterogeneity is progressively reduced. It is suggested that the dominance of hydrophobic compounds in humic supramolecular associations may inhibit the electrospray ionization of hydrophilic components. Our results show that ESI-MS is reasonably applicable to humic substances only after an extensive reduction of their chemical complexity.  相似文献

A preconcentration and determination method for humic and fulvic acids at trace levels in natural water samples was developed. Cloud point extraction was successfully employed for the preconcentration of humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) prior to the determination by using a flow injection (FI) system coupled to a spectrophotometric UV-Vis detector. The quantitative extraction of HA and FA within the pH range 1-12 was obtained by neutralization of the anionic charge on the humic substances with a cationic surfactant, hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). This generated a hydrophobic species that was subsequently incorporated (solubilized) into the micelles of a non-ionic surfactant polyethylene glycol, tert-octylphenyl ether (Triton X-114). The FI method for HA and FA determination was developed by injection of 100 microl of the extracted surfactant-rich phase using an HPLC pump with spectrophotometric detection at 350 nm. A 50 ml sample solution preconcentration allowed an enrichment factor of 167. The limit of detection (LOD) obtained under the optimal conditions was 5 microg l(-1). The precision for ten replicate determinations at 0.2 mg l(-1) HA was 3.1% relative standard deviation (RSD), calculated from the peak heights. The calibration using the preconcentration system for HA and FA was linear with a correlation coefficient (r2) of 0.9997 at levels near the detection limits up to at least 1 mg l(-1). The method was successfully applied to the determination of HA and FA in natural water samples (river water).  相似文献

Humic substances are natural complexed mixtures of organic compounds originated from the decomposition of plant and animal residues. These compounds are ubiquitous in soils, sediments, surface waters and groundwaters. They contain both hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties, able to interact with hydrophobic organic contaminants and with heavy metals. These sorption interactions play a crucial role in contaminants fate and transport and their understanding and quantification are essential for modeling and predictions. However, sorption analyses frequently suffer from experimental problems. A novel idea presented in this study is to use sol-gel as an inert matrix to immobilize (entrap) specific, well defined, humic molecules which then be used in sorption studies. We developed a successful procedure for the immobilization of humic acid (HA) in a sol-gel matrix. After gelation and drying, the doped gel was crushed and washed several times, yielding a very stable product. It was then used in a series of batch experiments, studying the sorption of several polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with Aldrich HA. The sorption coefficients (K oc) obtained with the immobilized HA were highly correlated with the values expected based on the hydrophobicity of the contaminants. We concluded that the entrapped HA retained its original properties and that it was accessible to the external contaminants through the pore network.  相似文献

Conventional monodimensional fluorescence spectroscopy in the emission, excitation, and synchronous-scan modes and total luminescence spectroscopy have proven to be sensitive techniques for characterization and differentiation of humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) fractions isolated from an aerobically and anaerobically digested and limed biosolid, two layers of a sandy and a clayey Brazilian oxisol, and the corresponding biosolid-amended soils. The spectral patterns and the relative fluorescence intensities suggest greater molecular heterogeneity, less aromatic polycondensation, and less humification of biosolid HA and FA compared with soil HA and FA. However, the differences are smaller for the FA fractions than for the HA fractions. Fluorescence properties of soil HA and FA differ slightly as a function of soil type and soil layer. Biosolid application causes a shift to shorter wavelengths of the main fluorescence peaks and marked variation of the relative fluorescence intensities of HA and FA isolated from amended soils. These results suggest that molecular components of relatively small molecular size, with a low level of aromatic polycondensation, and low degree of humification present in biosolid HA and FA are partially and variously incorporated into amended soil HA and FA. In general, these modifications seem to be smaller in HA and FA from the clayey soil layers than in those from the sandy soil layers, possibly because of protective effects exerted by clay minerals of native soil HA and FA against disturbances caused by biosolid application.  相似文献

Binding of pyrene (PyH) and its derivatives to humic acid (HA) has been studied by fluorescence spectroscopy. The nature of the interaction between HA and pyrene derivatives are extensively investigated by employing three derivatives ranging from anionic to cationic compounds: 1-pyrenebutylic acid (PyA), 1-pyrenemethanol (PyM), and 1-pyrenebutyltrimethylammonium bromide (PyB). Binding constants between HA and PyX (X=H, A, M, B) are obtained by steady-state fluorescence quenching techniques, and it is found that PyB has a markedly large binding constant among the pyrene family. This is attributed to a strong electrostatic interaction between cationic PyB and anionic HA. The result suggests that an electrostatic interaction plays a dominant role in binding of pyrenes to humic acid. The importance of electrostatic interaction was also confirmed by a salt effect on the binding constant. Influence of collisional quenching on the binding constant, which causes overestimation of the binding constant, was examined by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy as well as temperature effect in steady-state fluorescence measurements. It is elucidated that collisional quenching does not much bring overestimation into the binding constants.  相似文献

A better understanding of metal ion binding to soil organic substances is of fundamental importance in geochemical modeling of environments. Fulvic acids (FA) and humic acids (HA) make up an important part of soil organic matter, and their binding capacity affects the fate of metal ions and plays an important role in their mobility. Binding constants of Pb(II) to HA and FA were evaluated by anodic stripping square wave voltammetry (ASSWV) where the binding reaction was performed at pH 4.5 in a medium of 0.020 mol l−1 KNO3. Results showed that ASSWV technique was well suited for the estimation of the binding capacity of a natural organic matter towards heavy metals. Based on the voltammetric titration curves, binding constants of Pb(II) complexes formed with HA and FA were 0.78 × 106 and 0.15 × 106 mol−1 l, which indicated that complex of Pb2+ with HA was more stable than with FA. The average molecular weight of HA and FA prepared from soil samples were also found to be 1821 g mol−1 and 805 g mol−1, respectively.  相似文献

Qualitative and quantitative aspects of hydration of four humic acids (HA) and three fulvic acids (FA) originating from different sources were investigated. DSC experiments at subambient temperatures were carried out in order to monitor differences in ice behavior originating from freezable water surrounding humic molecules. It was found that kinetic effects play a significant role in hydration processes of both HA and FA. In fact, the hydration took part over 21?days which was detected as a progressive decrease in ice melting enthalpy. Simultaneously, the peak shapes and positions changed indicating structural changes in the physical structure of the humic substances. In case of FA, the dependency of melting enthalpy on water concentration showed a linear trend resembling a complete hydration previously observed for water-soluble hydrophilic polymers. In contrast, the melting enthalpy of some HA increased in a step-like way with increasing water content, suggesting preservation of original hydrophobic scaffold during the hydration. The differences between the rather young FA and the rather old HA lead to the conclusion that water can play a significant role in processes of humification. We assume that separation of hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains and thus increase in nanoscale heterogeneity represents an important physical contribution to the overall humification process. It was also demonstrated that the higher content of oxygen in humic molecules is not the only indicator of higher water holding capacity. Instead the porosity of humic matrix seems to contribute as additional parameter into these processes.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous contaminants of the terrestrial environment that have been designated as Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Priority Pollutants. In this study, molecular modeling was used to examine the physical and chemical characteristics of soil organic matter (SOM), fulvic acid (FA) and humic acid (HA), as well as their binding interactions with PAHs. The molecular structures of 18 PAHs were built by using the SYBYL 7.0 program and then fully optimized by a semiempirical (AM1) method. A molecular docking program, AutoDock 3.05, was used to calculate the binding interactions between the PAHs, and three molecular structure models including FA (Buffle's model), HA (Stevenson's model) and SOM (Schulten and Schnitzer's model). The pi-pi interactions and H-bonding interactions were found to play an important role in the intermolecular bonding of the SOM/PAHs complexes. In addition, significant correlations between two chemical properties, boiling point (bp) and octanol/water partition coefficient (Log K(ow)) and final docking energies were observed. The preliminary docking results provided knowledge of the important binding modes to FA, HA and SOM, and thereby to predict the sorption behavior of PAHs and other pollutants.  相似文献

In this paper, the LCD (ligand charge distribution) model is applied to describe the adsorption of (Tongbersven) humic acid (HA) to goethite. The model considers both electrostatic interactions and chemical binding between HA and goethite. The large size of HA particles limits their close access to the surface. Part of the adsorbed HA particles is located in the compact part at the goethite surface (Stern layers) and the rest in the less structured diffuse double layer (DDL). The model can describe the effects of pH, ionic strength, and loading on the adsorption. Compared to fulvic acid (FA), adsorption of HA is stronger and more pH- and ionic-strength-dependent. The larger number of reactive groups on each HA particle than on a FA particle results in the stronger HA adsorption observed. The stronger pH dependency in HA adsorption is related to the larger number of protons that are coadsorbed with HA due to the higher charge carried by a HA particle than by a FA particle. The positive ionic-strength dependency of HA adsorption can be explained by the conformational change of HA particles with ionic strength. At a higher ionic strength, the decrease of the particle size favors closer contact between the particles and the surface, leading to stronger competition with electrolyte ions for surface charge neutralization and therefore leading to more HA adsorption.  相似文献

Sorption of Th(IV) on Na-rectorite as a function of pH, ionic strength, soil humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) are studied under ambient conditions by using a batch technique. The results indicate that the sorption of Th(IV) on Na-rectorite is not only dependent on medium pH values, but also dependent on medium ionic strength and humic substances. Surface complexation and cation competition exchange account for Th(IV) sorption on Na-rectorite. The sorption of Th(IV) on Na-rectorite decreases with the increase on the concentration of NaNO3, Mg(NO3)2 and Ca(NO3)2, and increases with the increasing amount of HA/FA in the suspension/adsorbed on rectorite. Soil HA/FA enhances the sorption of Th(IV) on rectorite at medium pH<4 drastically, but the presence of FA reduces the sorption of Th(IV) at medium pH>6, and HA has no effect on Th(IV) sorption at medium pH>6. An interpretation for the results is attempted, considering the occurrence of different sorption mechanisms.  相似文献

To investigate the formation of mobile organic plutonium, we analyzed the plutonium contents of the fulvic (FA) and humic (HA) acids from the soil samples obtained at Nishiyama, Nagasaki, Japan. The percentages of the plutonium bound strongly to HA and to FA vs. the total plutonium in the soil were 5–10% and 1%, respectively, at the depth of 0–0.1 m, much higher values than those of137Cs and uranium. After being weathered for 51 years under a temperate climate, the initial highfired oxides of fallout plutonium have become as chemically reactive plutonium from nuclear fuel reprocessing plants.  相似文献

High performance size-exclusion chromatography (HP-SEC) with UV absorption for organic matter detection and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for elemental detection have been used to study the mobilization of metals from compost as a function of pH and the molecular mass of their complexes with dissolved organic matter (DOM). Due to its heterogeneous nature, organic matter mobilized from compost shows a continuous distribution of molecular masses in the range studied (up to 80 kDa). In order to differentiate between the contribution of humic and fulvic acids (FA) to the organic matter mobilized in the pH range 5-10, their UV absorption chromatographic profiles have been deconvoluted with respect to the adjusted gaussian profiles of the humic and fulvic acids isolated from compost. Results show a preponderant contribution of fulvic acids at low pH values and an increasing percentage of humic acids (HA) mobilized at basic pH (up to 49% of total DOM at pH 10). A similar deconvolution procedure has been applied to the ICP-MS chromatograms of selected metals (Co, Cu, Pb and Bi). In general, both fulvic and humic acids contribute to the mobilization of divalent transition metals, such as copper or cobalt, whereas bismuth or lead are preferably associated to humic acids. Non-humic substances (HS) also contribute to the mobilization of cations, especially at acidic pHs. These conclusions have been extended to different elements based on deconvolution analysis results at pH 7.  相似文献

Diffuse reflectance near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) combined with partial least squares (PLS) data treatment has been employed for the rapid and nondestructive determination of sedimentary humic substances. Forty one samples of surface estuarine sediments, taken during distinct seasonal periods from different locations across Ria de Arousa (northwest of Spain), were scanned at wavelengths from 833 to 2,976 nm (12,000 to 3,360 cm−1). Twenty four samples were randomly selected, from previous hierarchical cluster analysis of their NIR spectra, for the calibration set, and the 17 remaining samples were assigned to the validation set. NIR spectra of calibration samples were correlated to measured values of humic acids (HAs) and fulvic acids (FAs), which ranged from 1.53 to 28.17 mg/g and from 0.37 to 2.45 mg/g, respectively, using PLS regression and multiplicative scattering correction on the raw and first-derivative NIR spectra, respectively. Low root mean square error of prediction values of 4.3 mg HA/g sediment and 0.25 mg FA/g sediment were obtained. Good residual prediction deviation values of 1.16 and 1.2 were obtained for HA and FA, respectively, allowing the PLS models built to be considered as appropriate tools for screening purposes. The effects of orthophosphate on the adsorption of natural organic matter (NOM) on aluminum hydroxide were investigated using three organic compounds as surrogates, including humic acid (HA), phthalic acid, and 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,3-DHBA). The adsorption of phthalic acid and 2,3-DHBA was very limited compared to that of HA, whereas their adsorption was reduced much more significantly than that of HA by phosphate. The efficiency of phosphate in reducing HA adsorption increased with increasing phosphate concentration. Phosphate adsorption was slightly reduced by phthalic acid and 2,3-DHBA but moderately suppressed by HA. The adjacent carboxylic groups mainly contributed to the adsorption of humic acid at low pH, while the adjacent phenol groups were responsible for the adsorption of humic acid at high pH. HPLC-SEC and SUVA analysis revealed that HA molecules with high molecular weight were adsorbed preferentially but were easily displaced by the specifically adsorbed phosphate. TM-AFM images revealed that the aggregation of HA molecules and the protonation of carboxylic groups at low pH facilitated the adsorption under acidic conditions. The presence of phosphate increases the coagulant dosage for NOM removal as some sites on the coagulant precipitates become utilized by phosphate.  相似文献
