A novel method to fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces using electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is presented. EPD presents a readily scalable, customizable, and potentially low cost surface manufacturing process. Low surface energy materials with high surface roughness are achieved using EPD of unstable hydrophobic SiO(2) particle suspensions. The effect of suspension stability on surface roughness is quantitatively explored with optical absorbance measurements (to determine suspension stability) and atomic force microscopy (to measure surface roughness). Varying suspension pH modulates suspension stability. Contrary to most applications of EPD, we show that superhydrophobic surfaces favor mildly unstable suspensions since they result in high surface roughness. Particle agglomerates formed in unstable suspensions lead to highly irregular films after EPD. After only 1 min of EPD, we obtain surfaces with low contact angle hysteresis and static contact angles exceeding 160°. We also present a technique to enhance the mechanical durability of the superhydrophobic surfaces by adding a polymeric binder to the suspension prior to EPD.  相似文献

Artificial superhydrophobic surfaces are typically fabricated by tuning the surface roughness of intrinsically hydrophobic surfaces. We report here the design and fabrication of micro-textures for inducing a superhydrophobic behavior on hydrogen-terminated Si surfaces with an intrinsic water contact angle of approximately 74 degrees . The micro-textures consist of overhang structures with well-defined geometries fabricated by microfabrication technologies, which provide positions to support the liquid and prevent the liquid from entering into the indents between the micro-textures. As a result, water is in contact with a composite surface of solid and air, which induces the observed macroscopic superhydrophobic behavior.  相似文献

Superhydrophobic surfaces of n-hexatriacontane were fabricated in a single-step process. The low surface energy of n-hexatriacontane together with the randomly distributed micro- and nanoscale roughness features guarantees very large contact angles and a small roll-off angle for water drops. The advantage of n-hexatriacontane superhydrophobic surfaces is their stability in the sense that they are impervious to chemical reactions and retain their wetting characteristics over a long period of time, as confirmed by XPS analysis and contact angle measurements.  相似文献

Contact line and contact angle dynamics in superhydrophobic channels   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The dynamics of the wetting and movement of a three-phase contact line confined between two superhydrophobic surfaces were studied using a mean-field free-energy lattice Boltzmann model. Principle features of superhydrophobic surfaces, such as trapped vapor/air between rough microstructures, high contact angles, reduced contact angle hysteresis, and low resistance to fluid flow, were all observed. Movement of the three-phase contact line over a well-patterned superhydrophobic surface displays a periodic stick-jump-slip behavior, while the dynamic contact angle changes accordingly from maximum to minimum. Two regimes were found for the flow velocity as a function of surface roughness and can be related directly to the balance between driving force and flow resistance. This work provides a better understanding of dynamic wetting and fluid flow behaviors over superhydrophobic surfaces and hence could be useful in related applications.  相似文献

Hydrophilic laser-textured silicon wafers with natural oxide surfaces were rendered hydrophobic by depositing electrostatically charged submicrometer Teflon particles, a process termed as triboelectric Teflon adhesion. Silicon surfaces were micro-textured (~5 μm) by laser ablation using a nanosecond pulsed UV laser. By varying laser fluence, micro-texture morphology of the wafers could be reproduced and well controlled. Wetting properties of the triboelectrically charged Teflon-deposited surfaces were studied by measuring apparent static water contact angles and water contact angle hysteresis as a function of substrate roughness and the amount of Teflon deposited. A similar study was also performed on various micro-textured silicon carbide surfaces (sandpapers). If the average substrate roughness is between 15 and 60 μm, superhydrophobic surfaces can be easily formed by Teflon deposition with water contact angle hysteresis less than 8°. This environmentally benign solvent-free process is a highly efficient, rapid, and inexpensive way to render contact-charged rough surfaces hydrophobic or superhydrophobic.  相似文献

Surfaces play an important role in defining the properties of materials, controlling wetting, adsorption, or desorption of biomolecules, and sealing/bonding of different materials. We have combined microscale features with plasma-etched nanoscale roughness and chemical modification to tailor the wettability of the substrates. Cyclic olefin polymers and copolymers (COPs/COCs) were processed to make a range of surfaces with controlled superhydrophobic or -hydrophilic properties. The hydrophobic properties of the polymers were increased by the introduction of microstructures of varying geometry and spacing through hot embossing. The COC/COP substrates were functionalized by plasma activation in O(2), CF(4), and a mixture of both gases. The plasma etching introduces nanoscale roughness and also chemically modifies the surface, creating either highly hydrophilic or highly hydrophobic (contact angle >150°) surfaces depending on the gas mixture. The influence of geometry and chemistries was characterized by atomic force microscopy, contact angle measurements, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Measurements of the contact angle and contact angle hysteresis demonstrated long-term stability of the superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic characteristics (>6 months).  相似文献

A method for the preparation of inorganic superhydrophobic silica coatings using sol-gel processing with tetramethoxysilane and isobutyltrimethoxysilane as precursors is described. Incorporation of isobutyltrimethoxysilane into silica layers resulted in the existence of hydrophobic isobutyl surface groups, thereby generating surface hydrophobicity. When combined with the surface roughness that resulted from sol-gel processing, a superhydrophobic surface was achieved. This surface showed improved UV and thermal stability compared to superhydrophobic surfaces generated from polybutadiene by plasma etching. Under prolonged UV tests (ASTM D 4329), these surfaces gradually lost superhydrophobic character. However, when the as-prepared superhydrophobic surface was treated at 500 degrees C to remove the organic moieties and covered with a fluoroalkyl layer by a perfluorooctylsilane treatment, the surface regained superhydrophobicity. The UV and thermal stability of these surfaces was maintained upon exposure to temperatures up to 400 degrees C and UV testing times of 5500 h. Contact angles remained >160 degrees with contact angle hysteresis approximately 2 degrees.  相似文献

It is of significant interest to create surfaces that simultaneously exhibit high water contact angle, low contact angle hysteresis, and high transmission of visible light, as well as mechanical wear resistance for industrial applications. The fabrication of such surfaces has often involved complex or expensive processes, required techniques that were not suitable for a variety of substrates and particles, required surface post-treatment, or lacked wear resistance. A systematic study has been performed in which transparent superhydrophobic surfaces were created on glass, polycarbonate, and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) substrates using surface-functionalized SiO(2), ZnO, and indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles. The contact angle, contact angle hysteresis, and optical transmittance were measured for samples using all particle-substrate combinations. To examine wear resistance, multiscale wear experiments were performed using an atomic force microscope (AFM) and a water jet apparatus.  相似文献

Considerable effort has been expended on theoretical studies of superhydrophobic surfaces with two-tier (micro and nano) roughness, but experimental studies are few due to the difficulties in fabricating such surfaces in a controllable way. The objective of this work is to experimentally study the wetting and hydrophobicity of water droplets on two-tier rough surfaces for comparison with theoretical analyses. To compare wetting on micropatterned silicon surfaces with wetting on nanoscale roughness surfaces, two model systems are fabricated: carbon nanotube arrays on silicon wafers and carbon nanotube arrays on carbon nanotube films. All surfaces are coated with 20 nm thick fluorocarbon films to obtain low surface energies. The results show that the microstructural characteristics must be optimized to achieve stable superhydrophobicity on microscale rough surfaces. However, the presence of nanoscale roughness allows a much broader range of surface design criteria, decreases the contact angle hysteresis to less than 1 degrees , and establishes stable and robust superhydrophobicity, although nanoscale roughness could not increase the apparent contact angle significantly if the microscale roughness dominates.  相似文献

The lotus effect involving roughness-induced superhydrophobicity is a way to design nonwetting, self-cleaning, omniphobic, icephobic, and antifouling surfaces. However, such surfaces require micropatterning, which is extremely vulnerable to even small wear rates. This limits the applicability of the lotus effects to situations when wear is practically absent. To design sustainable superhydrophobic surfaces, we suggest using metal matrix composites (MMCs) with hydrophobic reinforcement in the bulk of the material, rather than only at its surface. Such surfaces, if properly designed, provide roughness and heterogeneity needed for superhydrophobicity. In addition, they are sustainable, since when the surface layer is deteriorated and removed due to wear, hydrophobic reinforcement and roughness remains. We present a model and experimental data on wetting of MMCs. We also conducted selected experiments with graphite-reinforced MMCs and showed that the contact angle can be determined from the model. In order to decouple the effects of reinforcement and roughness, the experiments were conducted for initially smooth and etched matrix and composite materials.  相似文献

Silicon is employed in a variety of electronic and optical devices such as integrated circuits, photovoltaics, sensors, and detectors. In this paper, Au-assisted etching of silicon has been used to prepare superhydrophobic surfaces that may add unique properties to such devices. Surfaces were characterized by contact angle and contact angle hysteresis. Superhydrophobic surfaces with reduced hysteresis were prepared by Au-assisted etching of pyramid-structured silicon surfaces to generate hierarchical surfaces. Consideration of the Laplace pressure on hydrophobized hierarchical surfaces gives insight into the manner by which contact is established at the liquid/composite surface interface. Light reflectivity from the etched surfaces was also investigated to assess application of these structures to photovoltaic devices.  相似文献

In this paper, the icephobic properties of superhydrophobic surfaces are investigated under dynamic flow conditions using a closed-loop low-temperature wind tunnel. Superhydrophobic surfaces were prepared by coating aluminum and steel substrate plates with nano-structured hydrophobic particles. The superhydrophobic plates, along with uncoated controls, were exposed to a wind tunnel air flow of 12 m/s and ?7 °C with deviations of ±1 m/s and ±2.5 °C, respectively, containing micrometer-sized (~50 μm in diameter) water droplets. The ice formation and accretion were observed by CCD cameras. Results show that the superhydrophobic coatings significantly delay ice formation and accretion even under the dynamic flow condition of highly energetic impingement of accelerated supercooled water droplets. It is found that there is a time scale for this phenomenon (delay in ice formation) which has a clear correlation with contact angle hysteresis and the length scale of the surface roughness of the superhydrophobic surface samples, being the highest for the plate with the lowest contact angle hysteresis and finest surface roughness. The results suggest that the key for designing icephobic surfaces under the hydrodynamic pressure of impinging droplets is to retain a non-wetting superhydrophobic state with low contact angle hysteresis, rather than to only have a high apparent contact angle (conventionally referred to as a “static” contact angle).  相似文献

Microtextured superhydrophobic surfaces: a thermodynamic analysis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Superhydrophobic surfaces with a contact angle (CA) larger than 150 degrees have recently attracted great interest in both academic research and practical applications due to their water-repellent or self-cleaning properties. However, thermodynamic mechanisms responsible for the effects of various factors such as surface geometry and chemistry, liquids, and environmental sources have not been well understood. In this study, a pillar microtexture, which has been intensively investigated in experiments, is chosen as a typical example and thermodynamically analyzed in detail. To gain a comprehensive insight into superhydrophobic behavior, the roles of pillar height, width and spacing (or roughness and solid fraction), intrinsic CA, drop size, and vibrational energy are systematically investigated. Free energy (FE) and free energy barrier (FEB) are calculated using a simple and robust model. Based on the calculations of FE and FEB, various CAs, including apparent, equilibrium (stable), advancing and receding CAs, and contact angle hysteresis (CAH) can be determined. Especially, the design of practical superhydrophobic surfaces is emphasized in connection with the transition between noncomposite and composite states; a criterion for judging such transition is proposed. The theoretical results are consistent with the Wenzel's and the Cassie's equations for equilibrium CA values and experimental observations. Furthermore, based on these results and the proposed criterion, some general principles to achieve superhydrophobic performance are suggested.  相似文献

Both surface microstructure and low surface energy modification play a vital role in the preparation of superhydrophobic surfaces. In this study, a safe and simple electrochemical method was developed to fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces of Zr-based metallic glasses with high corrosion resistance. First, micro–nano composite structures were generated on the surface of Zr-based metallic glasses by electrochemical etching in NaCl solution. Next, stearic acid was used to decrease surface energy. The effects of electrochemical etching time on surface morphology and wettability were also investigated through scanning electron microscopy and contact angle measurements. Furthermore, the influence of micro–nano composite structures and roughness on the wettability of Zr-based metallic glasses was analysed on the basis of the Cassie–Baxter model. The water contact angle of the surface was 154.3° ± 2.2°, and the sliding angle was <5°, indicating good superhydrophobicity. Moreover, the potentiodynamic polarisation test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy suggested excellent corrosion resistance performance, and the inhibition efficiency of the superhydrophobic surface reached 99.6%. Finally, the prepared superhydrophobic surface revealed excellent temperature-resistant and self-cleaning properties.  相似文献

A typical superhydrophobic (ultrahydrophobic) surface can repel water droplets from wetting itself, and the contact angle of a water droplet resting on a superhydrophobic surface is greater than 150°, which means extremely low wettability is achievable on superhydrophobic surfaces. Many superhydrophobic surfaces (both manmade and natural) normally exhibit micro- or nanosized roughness as well as hierarchical structure, which somehow can influence the surface's water repellence. As the research into superhydrophobic surfaces goes deeper and wider, it is becoming more important to both academic fields and industrial applications. In this work, the most recent progress in preparing manmade superhydrophobic surfaces through a variety of methodologies, particularly within the past several years, and the fundamental theories of wetting phenomena related to superhydrophobic surfaces are reviewed. We also discuss the perspective of natural superhydrophobic surfaces utilized as mimicking models. The discussion focuses on how the superhydrophobic property is promoted on solid surfaces and emphasizes the effect of surface roughness and structure in particular. This review aims to enable researchers to perceive the inner principles of wetting phenomena and employ suitable methods for creation and modification of superhydrophobic surfaces.  相似文献

Superhydrophobicity of biological surfaces has recently been studied intensively with the aim to design artificial surfaces. It has been revealed that nearly all of the superhydrophobic surfaces consist of the intrinsic hierarchical structures. However, the role of such structures has not been completely understood. In this study, different scales of hierarchical structures have been thermodynamically analyzed using a 2-D model. In particular, the free energy (FE) and free energy barrier (FEB) for the composite wetting states are calculated, and the effects of relative pillar height (h(r)) and relative pillar width (a(r)) on contact angle (CA) and contact angle hysteresis (CAH) have been investigated in detail. The results show that if the geometrical parameter ratio is the same (e.g., a:b:h = 2:2:1), the equilibrium CA for the composite of the three-, dual-, and single- scale roughness structures is 159.8°, 151.1°, and 138.6°, respectively. Furthermore, the nano- to microstructures of such surfaces can split a large FEB into many small ones and hence can decrease FEB; in particular, a hierarchical geometrical structure can lead to a hierarchical "FEB structure" (e.g., for a dual-scale roughness geometrical structure, there is also a dual-scale FEB structure). This is especially important for a droplet to overcome the large FEBs to reach a stable superhydrophobic state, which can lead to an improved self-cleaning property. Moreover, for extremely small droplets, the secondary or third structure (i.e., submicrostructure or nanostructure) can play a dominant role in resisting the droplets into troughs, so that a composite state can be always thermodynamically favorable for such a hierarchical structured system.  相似文献

A series of pillar-like patterned silicon wafers with different pillar sizes and spacing are fabricated by photolithography and further modified by a self-assembled fluorosilanated monolayer. The dynamic contact angles of water on these surfaces are carefully measured and found to be consistent with the theoretical predictions of the Cassie model and the Wenzel model. When a water drop is at the Wenzel state, its contact angle hysteresis increases along with an increase in the surface roughness. While the surface roughness is further raised beyond its transition roughness (from the Wenzel state to the Cassie state), the contact angle hysteresis (or receding contact angle) discontinuously drops (or jumps) to a lower (or higher) value. When a water drop is at the Cassie state, its contact angle hysteresis strongly depends on the solid fraction and has nothing to do with the surface roughness. Even for a superhydrophobic surface, the contact angle hysteresis may still exhibit a value as high as 41 degrees for the solid fraction of 0.563.  相似文献

In the present study, a novel and simple method of obtaining superhydrophobic surface through the migration of organic siloxane segments in the acrylate side chains to the outmost layer and forming the nano-protuberance on the micro-roughness wool fabrics was described. The chemical compositions and morphologies of the untreated/treated fabrics were characterized by the scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectric energy spectroscopy. Meanwhile, the surface hydrophobicity was evaluated by the static contact angle measurement. The scanning electron microscopy photographs showed that the fiber surfaces of the treated fabrics were obviously granulated, and a wax film covered on the fibers could be observed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses and static contact angle measurement further testified that the component of the wax was almost siloxane and that the surfaces of the treated fabrics had superhydrophobic property. The above results indicated that this method could be extended to prepare superhydrophobic surfaces by migrating the low-surface-energy matter and fabricating the nanoscale roughness on the micro-roughness material surfaces.  相似文献
