We investigate quasi-Bragg-matched counterpropagating spatial solitons in a reflection grating in the presence of a longitudinally modulated Kerr nonlinearity. The physical interplay of linear reflection and Kerr self-focusing with the modulation in the nonlinearity yields a variety of elaborate self-action mechanisms. We first analytically predict the existence of symmetric soliton pairs supported by a pure Kerr-like effective nonlinearity. We then analytically derive two families of solitons, associated with the linear grating eigenmodes, supported by an effective "incoherent" Kerr-like coupling arising from the exact balance between the modulation in the nonlinearity and the Kerr interaction due to beam interference.  相似文献

We investigate theoretically the ?erenkov-type second-harmonic generation in two-dimensional bulk nonlinear photonic crystal with longitudinal modulation of the χ((2)) nonlinearity. We show that in this scheme the ?erenkov radiation can be achieved simultaneously at multiple directions with comparable intensities. The angles of emission are controllable by the spatial modulation of the nonlinearity. We propose a design of the periodically poled domain pattern, which maximizes the efficiency of the second-harmonic emission.  相似文献

We derive an equation that describes the nonlinear operation of a Fabry-Perot resonator with a large group index waveguide. Specifically, a silicon photonic crystal microcavity with two-photon-excited free carrier nonlinearity and Kerr nonlinearity is assumed. The equation clearly explains the bistability of the device and the reduction of the required pump energy for a specific nonlinear phase shift at an appropriate phase detuning from the resonance. We present a simple procedure to predict the required optical pump energy for the modulation and the resulting modulation depth by use of the equation and the device parameters.  相似文献

We study the existence and stability of solitons forming in PT–symmetric optical lattices with spatially periodic modulation of the local strength of the nonlinear media. We found that the spatial modulation of the nonlinearity significantly affects the stability of solitons in PT–symmetric optical lattices. With the decrease of the strength of nonlinear refractive index modulation, the soliton's stability domain increases, whereas with the increase of the period of nonlinear refractive index modulation, the corresponding soliton's stability range narrows. In addition, we also investigate the influence of variation of the amplitude of the linear PT–symmetric lattice potential on soliton dynamics, in the presence of spatially periodic modulation of nonlinearity.  相似文献

We study the nonlinear optical response of a five-level atomic system in the regimes of electromagnetically induced transparency and coherent Raman gain, corresponding to two different schemes of light-atom interaction. Our analytical and numerical results show that greatly enhanced Kerr nonlinearity and efficient cross phase modulation may be achieved between a weak probe field and a weak signal field. The cross phase modulation via Kerr nonlinearity is then exploited toward the realization of a polarization quantum phase gate and the generation of a three-photon GHZ state.  相似文献

Weak modulation of a quasi-phase-matching (QPM) grating opens possibilities for engineering both the average quadratic nonlinearity and the incoherent average cubic nonlinearity induced by QPM. The relative strength of the average quadratic and effective (intrinsic plus induced) cubic nonlinearity is studied for LiNbO(3) . We show how the induced average cubic nonlinearity can be engineered to dominate the intrinsic material cubic nonlinearity and how doing so will allow the intensity at which the quadratic and cubic nonlinearities balance and thus compete to be decreased to a few gigawatts per square centimeter.  相似文献

We show that modulation instability can exist with partially spatially incoherent light beams in a noninstantaneous nonlinear environment. In this article, we theoretically investigate relative intensity noise (RIN) in optical communication systems with fiber nonlinearities due to optical Kerr effects and higher-order dispersion. The impact of modulation frequencies, launch power, and laser bias current on RIN has been illustrated. We show that RIN increases with modulating frequencies up to the resonance frequency, launch power, and decrease in the laser bias current. We also show that higher-order dispersion terms have no impact on the RIN, but with first-order dispersion compensation the higher-order dispersion terms have significant impact at high modulating frequencies. The RIN with and without fiber nonlinearities is further investigated. It has been shown that the RIN with fiber nonlinearity is more than the RIN without nonlinearity and the effect of nonlinearity appears at higher modulation frequencies only.  相似文献

We address vortex solitons supported by optical lattices featuring modulation of both the linear and nonlinear refractive indices. We find that when the modulation is out of phase the competition between both effects results in remarkable shape transformations of the solitons that profoundly affect their properties and stability. Nonlinear refractive index modulation is found to impose restrictions on the maximal power of off-site solitons, which are shown to be stable only below a maximum nonlinearity modulation depth.  相似文献

The evolution of two-frequency solitons in an optical fiber, as well as the practically important special case of absence of the second-harmonic wave, in the presence of a longitudinal nonuniformity of the coefficients characterizing the propagation nonlinearity are considered. The solitons found for media with constant values of the nonlinearity coefficients are used as initial distributions for media with a periodic dependence of the nonlinearity coefficients on the longitudinal coordinate. Modulation of the coefficient of cubic or quadratic nonlinearity is shown to result in oscillations of the peak intensity of the solitons (in both their components if two-color solitons are considered). In the case of a weak modulation of the nonlinearity coefficients, oscillations of the peak intensity occur at the frequency coinciding with the frequency of modulation of the nonlinearity coefficients. Under the weak influence of a periodically modulated cubic nonlinearity, parameters of quadratic solitons also oscillate upon the propagation. Regions of stability of solitons in the space of the modulation parameters are established.  相似文献

We study the logistic mapping with the nonlinearity parameter varied through a delayed feedback mechanism. This history dependent modulation through a phaselike variable offers an enhanced possibility for stabilization of periodic dynamics. Study of the system as a function of nonlinearity and modulation parameters reveals new phenomena: In addition to period-doubling and tangent bifurcations, there can be bifurcations where the period increases by unity. These are extensions of crises that arise in nonlinear dynamical systems. Periodic orbits in this system can be systematized via the kneading theory, which in the present case extends the analysis of Metropolis, Stein, and Stein for unimodal maps.  相似文献

基于非线性耦合模方程,研究了非线性管理光纤光栅中的调制不稳定性,得到了调制不稳定性的色散关系。与常规的非线性光纤光栅相比,在非线性管理光纤光栅中,克尔非线性的变化改变了调制不稳定性增益谱的谱宽和幅度,并导致新的不稳定性区域的出现:在反常色散区,原来关于零波数对称的两个旁瓣随着克尔非线性变化的增加其增益幅度递减至零,在经历了一段无增益区域之后,又逐渐形成了在零波数附近区域的一个新的单峰;而在正常色散区,除了原来的两个增益区域之外,零波数附近出现了新的增益区,增益的幅度随克尔非线性变化的增加而递增。可见,非线性管理光纤光栅给调制不稳定性的产生提供了更多的空间。  相似文献

We experimentally investigate the evolution of spatial modulation of broadband laser pulses with different pulse durations through a medium with non-instantaneous Kerr nonlinearity. By modifying the input laser pulse width, we observe the nonlinear growth of the spatial stripes that arise from interference with different modulation frequencies, and then obtain the gain spectra of the spatial modulation which clearly reveal the influence of relaxation effect on spatiotemporal modulation instability. We find that all gain spectra have the similar fastest growing frequency, but they have tails at higher frequency region in which the growth rate of gain is bigger for shorter pulse duration. The experimental results are confirmed by the perturbational analysis.  相似文献

We report on the experimental observation of the modulation instability of uniform beam and frequency-doubling of interference fringes spatial frequency in self-defocusing photorefractive crystal LiNbO3:Fe by the same experimental setup. Frequency-doubling appears if the nonlinearity of the c-axis is bigger than the modulation of the cylindrical lenses, otherwise the modulation instability appears.  相似文献

Accuracy in measuring displacement in optical interferometers is limited by cyclic errors introduced by various leakage paths within the system. Existing techniques to reduce this nonlinearity do not work when there is large optical loss in the target path, such as for long-range measurements. We describe a new approach to reducing nonlinearity that overcomes these limitations. Based on phase modulation of the laser light, and requiring minimal additional components, experiments have demonstrated rejection of the effects of leakage in the presence of large optical loss.  相似文献

We present a simplified symmetry analyzer (SA) with cross-Kerr nonlinearity, quantum non-demolition photon number measurement and basic optical elements. Based on the present symmetry analyzer (SA), all the Bell states can be discriminated nondestructively with nearly unity probability. In addition, with the help of cross-phase modulation (XPM) induced by giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity, three-photon Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) state can also be discriminated determinately and nondestructively, which is supposed to be meaningful in quantum information processing.  相似文献

We study experimentally and numerically the second-harmonic ?erenkov emission with two different characteristic azimuthal intensity distributions in strontium barium niobate with a random structure of χ2 nonlinearity. We monitor in situ the ?erenkov emission during domain switching and show that a change of domain size and shape results in a fourfold azimuthal modulation of the ?erenkov cone.  相似文献
