In this tutorial review the use of stimulus-sensitive hydrogels as sensors and actuators for (micro)analytical applications is discussed. The first part of the article is aimed at making the reader familiar with stimulus-sensitive hydrogels, their chemical composition and their chemo-physical behavior. The prior art in the field, that comprises a number of sensors ranging from metal ion-sensitive sensors to antigen-sensitive sensors and a few actuators, is also treated in this part. The second part of the article focusses on the use of stimulus-sensitive hydrogels for microsensors and microactuators as well as their application in micro total analysis systems. The benefits of stimulus-sensitive hydrogels, their miniaturisation and the use of 365 nm UV-photolithography as a fast economical manufacturing technique are discussed. 相似文献

Lightweight and flexible biosensors that can sustain mechanical deformation and can be adhered to human skin is an interesting field of study. In the current article, a systematic study on development of thermally exfoliated graphene oxide (TEGO)–reinforced poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)–based conductive hydrogel nanocomposites has been reported. The free‐standing hydrogels were synthesized using controlled and repetitive freeze‐thaw cycles. The samples were then studied for their mechanical as well as electrical properties. The hydrogels were characterized for their microstructural, chemical, and rheological properties to understand the observed macroscopic properties. Additionally, a study on the behavior of hydrogels immersed in phosphate‐buffered saline (PBS) was carried out to investigate their hydrolytic stability within simulated biological environment. Overall, the nanocomposite hydrogels demonstrated excellent static and dynamic mechanical performance, stability in PBS, considerable electrical conductivity, and significant electrical response to applied external stress, establishing their potential for use as flexible biosensors. 相似文献

Development of injectable high molecular weight hyaluronic acid hydrogels for cartilage regeneration
Shraddha Mondal Neena Haridas S. Sneha Letha V. Vijith G. Rajmohan 《高分子科学杂志,A辑:纯化学与应用化学》2016,53(8):507-514
The study focuses on developing hyaluronic acid (1200 kilo Dalton) hydrogels for cartilage regeneration. In spite of being highly biocompatible; a large amount of water absorption and easily degrading nature restricts the use of hyaluronic acid in the field of tissue regeneration. This can be rectified by crosslinking hyaluronic acid with a crosslinking agent such as divinyl sulfone; which results in a biocompatible hydrogel with superior rheological properties. Different amounts of divinyl sulfone have been used for crosslinking hyaluronic acid to get three types of hydrogels with differing properties. Swelling studies, rheology analysis, enzymatic degradation and scanning electron microscopic analysis were conducted on all the different types of hydrogels prepared. Viscoelastic properties of the hydrogel were analyzed so that a hydrogel with better elastic property and stability is obtained. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the morphology of the HA hydrogels. The cytotoxicity testing was conducted to prove the non-toxic nature of the hydrogels and cell culture studies using adipose mesenchymal stem cells showed better adhesion and proliferation properties in all the three hydrogels. Thus hyaluronic acid hydrogel makes a promising material for cartilage regeneration. 相似文献

Hydrogels were the first biomaterials designed for clinical use. Their discovery and applications as soft contact lenses and implants are presented. This early hydrogel research served as a foundation for the expansion of biomedical polymers research into new directions: design of stimuli sensitive hydrogels that abruptly change their properties upon application of an external stimulus (pH, temperature, solvent, electrical field, biorecognition) and hydrogels as carriers for the delivery of drugs, peptides, and proteins. Finally, pathways to self‐assembly of block and graft copolymers into hydrogels of precise 3D structures are introduced. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. As a consequence of the self‐assembly of small organic molecules in water, supramolecular hydrogels are evolving from serendipitous events during organic synthesis to become a new type of materials that hold promise for applications in biomedicine. In this Focus Review, we describe recent advances in the use of basic biological building blocks for creating molecules that act as hydrogelators and the potential applications of the corresponding hydrogels. After introducing the concept of supramolecular hydrogels and defining the scope of this review, we briefly describe the methods for making and characterizing supramolecular hydrogels. We then discuss representative hydrogelators according to the categories of their building blocks, such as amino acids, nucleobases, and saccharides, and highlight the applications of the hydrogels when necessary. Finally, we offer our perspective and outlook on this fast‐growing field at the interface of organic chemistry, materials, biology, and medicine. By providing a snapshot for chemists, engineers, and medical scientists, we hope that this Focus Review will contribute to the development of multidisciplinary research on supramolecular hydrogels for a wide range of applications in different fields. 相似文献

Design of temperature sensitive imprinted polymer hydrogels based on multiple-point hydrogen bonding
Weakly cross-linked temperature sensitive imprinted polymer hydrogels that recognize L-pyroglutamic acid (Pga) molecules via multiple-point hydrogen bonding were designed and synthesized. The amount of adsorption for Pga in imprinted hydrogels is 3-4 times higher than that in non-imprinted hydrogels. The selectivity test of imprinted polymer gels was carried out by using a series of structurally related compounds Pga, pyrrolidine, 2-pyrrolidone, L-proline as substrates. The results show that imprinted polymer gels exhibit high selectivity for Pga as compared to all the other tested substrates. The imprinted polymer hydrogels show good temperature sensitivity, special selectivity and reusability, suggesting that the polymer hydrogels would have an enormous potential for application in controlled drug release and separation field. 相似文献

Recent years have witnessed increasing interest in the field of asymmetric organocatalysis. In particular, efforts in this field have been devoted to the use of small organic molecules in asymmetric processes based on enantiotopic face discrimination and, only recently, efforts have also been devoted to asymmetric organocatalytic desymmetrization of prochiral substrates-a process based on enantiotopic group discrimination. This critical review documents the advances in the use of organocatalysis for the enantioselective desymmetrization of achiral and meso anhydrides and its application to the synthesis of valuable compounds as reported until 2010 (134 references). 相似文献

Bacterial infectious diseases and bacterial‐infected environments have been threatening the health of human beings all over the world. In view of the increased bacteria resistance caused by overuse or improper use of antibiotics, antibacterial biomaterials are developed as the substitutes for antibiotics in some cases. Among them, antibacterial hydrogels are attracting more and more attention due to easy preparation process and diversity of structures by changing their chemical cross‐linkers via covalent bonds or noncovalent physical interactions, which can endow them with various specific functions such as high toughness and stretchability, injectability, self‐healing, tissue adhesiveness and rapid hemostasis, easy loading and controlled drug release, superior biocompatibility and antioxidation as well as good conductivity. In this review, the recent progress of antibacterial hydrogel including the fabrication methodologies, interior structures, performances, antibacterial mechanisms, and applications of various antibacterial hydrogels is summarized. According to the bacteria‐killing modes of hydrogels, several representative hydrogels such as silver nanoparticles‐based hydrogel, photoresponsive hydrogel including photothermal and photocatalytic, self‐bacteria‐killing hydrogel such as inherent antibacterial peptides and cationic polymers, and antibiotics‐loading hydrogel are focused on. Furthermore, current challenges of antibacterial hydrogels are discussed and future perspectives in this field are also proposed. 相似文献

Granular hydrogels are composed of hydrogel-based microparticles, so-called microgels, that are densely packed to form an ink that can be 3D printed, injected or cast into macroscopic structures. They are frequently used as tissue engineering scaffolds because microgels can be made biocompatible and the porosity of the granular hydrogels enables a fast exchange of reagents, waste products, and if properly designed even the infiltration of cells. Most of these granular hydrogels can be shaped into appropriate macroscopic structures, yet, these structures are mechanically rather weak. The poor mechanical properties prevent the use of these structures as load-bearing materials and hence, limit their field of applications. The mechanical properties of granular hydrogels depend on the composition of microgels and the interparticle interactions. In this review, we discuss different strategies to assemble microparticles into granular hydrogels and highlight the influence of inter-particle connections on the stiffness and toughness of the resulting materials. Mechanically strong and tough granular hydrogels have the potential to open up new fields of their use and thereby to contribute to fast advances in these fields. In particular, we envisage them to be well-suited as soft actuators and robots, tissue replacements, and adaptive sensors. The mechanical properties of granular hydrogels are strongly influenced by interparticle interactions. In this review, we compare the storage, compressive and tensile moduli of granular hydrogels cured using various interparticle interactions. 相似文献

Polysaccharide hydrogels have found several applications in the food industry, in biomedicine, and cosmetics. The study of polysaccharide hydrogels offers a challenging scenario of intrinsic heterogeneities in the crosslinking density and large time and space ranges that characterize a number of dynamic processes entailing segmental motions, water diffusion, and small-molecule diffusion. The understanding of such complex features is essential because of the extensive use of polysaccharidic moieties in the food industry, biomedical devices, and cosmetics. The study of phenomena occurring at the nanoscale to the mesoscale requires the combination of investigative tools to probe different time and distance scales and the structural characterization of the networks by established methodologies such as swelling and elastic modulus measurements. Elastic and quasielastic neutron scattering, and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching are emerging methodologies in this field. In this feature article we focus, somewhat arbitrarily, on these new approaches because other techniques, such as low-resolution proton NMR relaxometry and rheology, have been already described thoroughly in the literature. Case examples of polysaccharide hydrogels studied by neutron scattering and fluorescence recovery are presented here as contributions to the comprehension of the dynamic behavior of physical and chemical hydrogels based on polysaccharides. Owing to their permanent porosity, highly ordered and extended structure, good chemical stability, and tunability, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as a new type of organic materials that can offer various applications in different fields. Benefiting from the huge database of organic reactions, the required functionality of COFs can be readily achieved by modification of the corresponding organic functional groups on either polymerizable monomers or established COF frameworks. This striking feature allows homochiral covalent organic frameworks (HCCOFs) to be reasonably designed and synthesized, as well as their use as a unique platform to fabricate asymmetric catalysts. This contribution provides an overview of new progress in HCCOF-based asymmetric catalysis, including design, synthesis, and their application in asymmetric organic synthesis. Moreover, major challenges and developing trends in this field are also discussed. It is anticipated that this review article will provide some new insights into HCCOFs for heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis and help to encourage further contributions in this young but promising field. 相似文献

Temperature sensitive and electric field sensitive hydrogels were prepared for use in modulated drug release systems. Crosslinked poly(N-isopropyl-acrylamide) and its networks, modified with hydrophobic components by copolymerization or by interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) formation, were utilized as temperature sensitive hydrogels. Indomethacin (a model solute)-release from polymer matrix and permeation through polymer membrane demonstrated “on-off” regulation with temperature fluctuation. This was the result of polymer surface properties rather than bulk swelling, as temperature was changed past the swelling transition temperature range of the polymer. The on-off regulation in an electric field was also obtained with a positively charged solute (Edrophonium chloride) release in distilled-deionized water from a matrix of crosslinked poly(2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid-co-butyl methacrylate). This was attributed to the ion exchange between Edrophonium ion and protons produced at the anode. The swelling changes produced by local pH or ionic strength changes affected non-charged solute release. 相似文献

Stimuli-responsive hydrogels have attracted considerable interest in the field of microfluidics due to their ability to transform electrical energy directly into mechanical work through swelling, bending, and other deformations. In particular, electroactive hydrogels hold great promise for biomedical micropumping applications such as implantable drug delivery systems. In such applications, energy consumption rate and durability are key properties. Here, we developed a valveless micropump system that utilizes a hydrogel as the main actuator, and tested its performance over 6 months of continuous operation. The proposed micropump system, powered by a single 1.5 V commercial battery, expended very little energy (less than 750 μWs per stroke) while pumping 0.9 wt% saline solution under a low voltage (less than 1 V), and remained fully functional after 6 months. CFD simulations were conducted to improve the microchannel geometry so as to minimize the backflow caused by the valveless mechanism of the system. Based on the simulation results, an asymmetric geometry and a stop post were introduced to enhance the pumping performance. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed system as a drug delivery pump, an anti-cancer drug (adriamycin) was perfused to human breast cancer cells (MCF-7) using the pump. The present study showed that the proposed system can operate continuously for long periods with low energy consumption, powered by a single 1.5 V battery, making it a promising candidate for an implantable drug delivery system. 相似文献
