Ortho-carborane molecules have been inserted into single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and imaged directly by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM); both discrete molecules and 'zig-zag' 1D chains of o-carborane 'petit pois' were observed to pack into the tubule capillaries.  相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes/polypropylene composites were compounded using a twin-screw extruder. Here, nanotubes with different lengths, i.e. 1-2 μm and 5-15 μm, respectively, were applied at a constant volume content of 1%. Notched Charpy impact tests showed that toughening effects of nanotubes depended highly on testing temperatures. The impact resistance was notably enhanced at a temperature above the glass transition temperature of matrix. Longer nanotubes performed more effective in toughening compared to the shorter ones. The increment of impact resistance of nanotube-filled polypropylene was considered due to enhanced load-carrying capability and much-increased deformation of matrix. SEM fractography further revealed the toughening mechanisms in a micro-scale. The impact energy was improved via nanotube breakage and pullout, which likely led to a series of energy consuming actions. In addition, the smaller spherulite size induced by nanotubes would be favourable to the impact resistance partially.  相似文献

Syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) composites filled with well-dispersed multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were readily prepared through a coagulation method. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction revealed the effect of CNTs on the polymorphism of sPS. When crystallized from the melted state, the formation of the β-form was always favored after CNT addition regardless of crystallization conditions (isothermal or non-isothermal). In the case where liquid nitrogen was used to quench the melt, the uncrystallized material that was not able to crystallize in the extremely short crystallization time crystallized in the α form upon subsequent cold crystallization. Regardless of the CNT content, the glass transition and equilibrium melting temperature of the sPS matrix were unchanged at ∼96 and 290 °C, respectively. With a gradual increase in CNT loading, the sPS crystallization rate initially increased but then reached a plateau value at high CNT concentrations because of the reduction in chain mobility. Moreover, the Avrami exponent was changed from 2.8 for samples at low CNT contents to 2.0 for samples with a CNT concentration above 0.1 wt.%, at which the rheological threshold was approached and a polymer-CNT hybrid network was formed. The enhanced crystallization kinetics was attributed to the high nucleating ability of CNTs to induce a transcrystalline layer (TCL) at its surface, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. For composites with low levels of CNT, the growth of sPS spherulites in the bulk between CNTs prevailed. Provided that the CNT-related networks were developed, the two-dimensional growth of cylindrical TCL at the CNT surface became dominant and led to the expected Avrami exponent.  相似文献

A procedure for functionalization of the surface of multiwall carbon nanotubes, based on treatment of the nanofiller with a strong oxidant and 1-hexadecylamine and aimed to improve the compatibility of nanotubes with a polypropylene matrix, was examined. Variation of the mechanical and electrical properties of the composite fiber based on polypropylene in relation to the concentration of the modified nanotubes was studied.  相似文献

Free-rising silicone foams were made with loading fractions of up to 0.25 wt.-% functionalized graphene sheets (FGS) and up to 1.0 wt.-% carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using hydrogen as blowing agent. Scanning electron microscopy of the samples revealed an open cellular structure and a homogeneous dispersion of both types of nanofillers. The incorporation of nanofiller affected the foaming process and thus the final foam density and cellular structure. Transmission electron microscopy revealed the formation of a CNT network throughout the sample, while FGS presented an exfoliated and intercalated dispersion. The thermal stability of the samples was drastically affected by the presence of both nanofillers. Both nanofillers showed a positive effect on the compressive response of the foams. However, the nanocomposite foams were found to decrease the acoustic absorption with nanofiller content probably due to the variable foam structure and improved stiffness.  相似文献

Polypropylene (PP) composites filled with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared using a twin-screw extruder. The melt flow properties of the composites were measured with a capillary rheometer in a temperature range from 180 to 230 °C and at various apparent shear rates varying from 100 to 4000 s−1. The results showed that the melt shear stress increased almost linearly while the melt shear viscosity decreased almost linearly with increasing shear rates in a bi-logarithmic coordinate system. The melt shear flow followed the power law relationship and the dependence of the melt shear viscosity on temperature obeyed the Arrhenius equation. The relationship between the melt shear viscosity and the MWCNT weight fraction was roughly linear under the investigated range of temperature or shear rate.  相似文献

Bioavailable residual metallic impurities within carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are responsible for the toxicity of CNTs. Herein we present a method for fast, sensitive determination of bioavailable molybdenum residual catalyst impurities within CNTs by using electrochemical oxidation in neutral pH buffers at low potentials. This method is unique because no other method can rapidly distinguish between bioavailable/mobilizable impurities from defects in CNTs and between the total amounts of impurities. This method will be indispensable for future toxicological studies of CNTs.  相似文献

In this work, dodecylamine‐modified graphene nanosheets (DA‐GNSs) and γ‐aminopropyl‐triethoxysilane‐treated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (f‐MWCNTs) are employed to prepare cyanate ester (CE) thermally conductive composites. By adding 5 wt% DA‐GNSs or f‐MWCNTs to the CE resin, the thermal conductivities of the composites became 3.2 and 2.5 times that of the CE resin, respectively. To further improve the thermal conductivity, a mixture of the two fillers was utilized. A remarkable synergetic effect between the DA‐GNSs and f‐MWCNTs on improving the thermal conductivity of CE resin composites was demonstrated. The composite containing 3 wt% hybrid filler exhibited a 185% increase in thermal conductivity compared with pure CE resin, whereas composites with individual DA‐GNSs and f‐MWCNTs exhibited increases of 158 and 108%, respectively. Moreover, the composite with hybrid filler retained high electrical resistivity. Scanning electron microscopy images of the composite morphologies showed that the modified graphene nanosheets (GNSs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were uniformly dispersed in the CE matrix, and a number of junction points among MWCNTs and between MWCNTs and GNSs formed in the composites with hybrid fillers. Generally, we can conclude that these composites filled with hybrid fillers may be promising materials of further improving the thermal conductivity of CE composites. Various electron-donating and -withdrawing groups in aromatic and aliphatic backbones of solvent have been introduced to tailor the electronic structures of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). In the case of solvent with a withdrawing group, electrons were extracted mainly from metallic SWCNTs, whereas small charge transfer was also observed in semiconducting SWCNTs. On the other hand, in the case of solvent with a donating group, electrons were donated to both metallic and semiconducting SWCNTs. This effect was less prominent in solvent with an aliphatic backbone than that with an aromatic backbone. The strong correlation between the sheet resistance and electronic structures of nanotubes is further discussed in conjunction with a modulation of Schottky barrier height.  相似文献

Thermal stability and reactivity to oxidation of several nanocomposite systems obtained by encapsulation of metal halides in single-walled carbon nanotubes are studied. Thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Raman spectroscopy allows insight into the various contributing factors, such as charge transfer, strain, and defect formation, and establishing a hierarchy of reactivity for the systems studied (AgX@SWCNTs, with X = Br, I; SWCNTs = arc discharge and HiPCO). The activation energy for oxidation decreases considerably after filling, indicating that filled nanotubes are more amenable to controlled modifications based on chemical reactivity than the originating empty nanotubes. The complete removal of the carbon shell at high temperatures does not preserve the nanowire morphology of the encapsulated halides; these are freed on surfaces in the form of nanoparticles arranged in 1D patterns. Metallic nanoparticles were obtained after hydrogen reduction of the halides, and growth of silicon nanowires in the footprint of the originating nanocomposites was demonstrated from such Co seeds. MX@SWCNTs (M = Ag, Co) can thus be used as environmentally stable nanoscale containers that allow the deliverance of catalytic nanoparticles in a prepatterned and aligned way.  相似文献

The interactions of various polypeptides with individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs), both multiwall (MW) and single wall (SW), were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). While adhesion forces arising from electrostatic attraction interactions between the protonated amine groups of polylysine and carboxylic groups on the acid-oxidized multi-wall carbon nanotubes (Ox-MWCNTs) dominate the interaction at a low pH, weaker adhesion forces via the hydrogen bonding between the neutral -NH2 groups of polylysine and -COO- groups of the Ox-MWCNTs were detected at a high pH. The adhesion force was further found to increase with the oxidation time for Ox-MWCNTs and to be negligible for oxidized single-wall carbon nanotubes (Ox-SWCNTs) because carboxylate groups were only attached onto the nanotube tips in the latter whereas onto both the nanotube tips and sidewall in the former. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that proteins containing aromatic moieties, such as polytryptophan, showed a stronger adhesion force with Ox-MWCNTs than that of polylysine because of the additional pi-pi stacking interaction between the polytryptophan chains and CNTs.  相似文献

Raman spectroscopy and imaging of ultralong carbon nanotubes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Raman spectroscopy and confocal Raman imaging with 514 nm excitation was performed on recently developed ultralong carbon nanotubes grown by the "fast-heating" chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The ultralong nanotubes are found to consist of both semiconducting and metallic types, with spectra that are consistent with the nanotubes being single walled. Characterization of nanotube diameters shows that short nanotubes appearing near the sample catalyst region have a broader distribution than is observed for the ultralong nanotubes. The narrow diameter distribution is determined by uniformity of catalyst particle size and gives additional evidence for the proposed "kite" mechanism for long nanotube growth. Raman imaging was performed over large length scales (up to 140 microm). Imaging reveals the ultralong nanotubes to be of high quality, with a very low defect density. Variations in G-band frequencies and intensity demonstrate the occurrence of minor structural changes and variations in nanotube-substrate interaction along the length of the nanotubes. Evidence also demonstrates that larger structural changes resulting in a full chirality change can occur in these nanotube types to produce a metal-to-semiconductor intramolecular junction.  相似文献

Polypropylene-based nanocomposites filled with polypropylene-grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PP-g-MWNT) were compared to PP samples filled with pristine MWNT. The effect of such additives on the structure and morphology of the polymer matrix was studied by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), polarized light optical microscopy (PLOM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). PP-g-MWNT allowed a more efficient and unhindered crystallization at a lamellar level, while MWNT disrupted the order of lamellar stacks, probably because of their tendency to aggregate. A common trend of tensile properties and lamellar morphology as a function of filler content was noted in the series filled with functionalized carbon nanotubes.  相似文献

A high temperature gel permeation chromatograph (GPC) was coupled with a gas chromatograph (GC) oven to obtain an analytical temperature rising elution fractionation (TREF) system with evaporative light scattering detection. On this instrument, a new column partially filled with pristine carbon nanotubes (CNT) was tested by evaluating the elution profiles in function of temperature (thermograms) of different polyethylene (PE) types. By comparing these thermograms with those obtained with a traditional TREF column filled with metallic wires, the adsorption of polymer chains on the pristine CNT was clearly evidenced. The thermograms given by the column filled with CNT are similar with those provided by literature when chromatographic columns filled with porous graphitic carbon are used for this application, usually described as high temperature thermal gradient interaction chromatography (HT-TGIC).  相似文献

Ultrastructural characterisation is important for understanding carbon nanotube (CNT) toxicity and how the CNTs interact with cells and tissues. The standard method for this involves using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). However, in particular, the sample preparation, using a microtome to cut thin sample sections for TEM, can be challenging for investigation of regions with agglomerations of large and stiff CNTs because the CNTs cut with difficulty. As a consequence, the sectioning diamond knife may be damaged and the uncut CNTs are left protruding from the embedded block surface excluding them from TEM analysis. To provide an alternative to ultramicrotomy and subsequent TEM imaging, we studied focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) of CNTs in the lungs of mice, and we evaluated the applicability of the method compared to TEM. FIB-SEM can provide serial section volume imaging not easily obtained with TEM, but it is time-consuming to locate CNTs in the tissue. We demonstrate that protruding CNTs after ultramicrotomy can be used to locate the region of interest, and we present FIB-SEM images of CNTs in lung tissue. FIB-SEM imaging was applied to lung tissue from mice which had been intratracheally instilled with two different multiwalled CNTs; one being short and thin, and the other longer and thicker. FIB-SEM was found to be most suitable for detection of the large CNTs (Ø ca. 70 nm), and to be well suited for studying CNT agglomerates in biological samples which is challenging using standard TEM techniques.

Developing conductive networks in a polymer matrix with a low percolation threshold and excellent mechanical properties is desired for soft electronics applications. In this work, natural rubber (NR) functionalized with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was prepared for strong interfacial interactions with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), resulting in excellent performance of the natural rubber nanocomposites. The MWCNT and methyl methacrylate functional groups gave good filler dispersion, conductivity and tensile properties. The filler network in the matrix was studied with microscopy and from its non-linear viscoelasticity. The Maier-Göritze approach revealed that MWCNT network formation was favored in the NR functionalized with PMMA, with reduced electrical and mechanical percolation thresholds. The obvious improvement in physical performance of MWCNT/methyl methacrylate functionalized natural rubber nanocomposites was caused by interfacial interactions and reduced filler agglomeration in the NR matrix. The modification of NR with poly(methyl methacrylate) and MWCNT filler was demonstrated as an effective pathway to enhance the mechanical and electrical properties of natural rubber nanocomposites.  相似文献

Cellulose (CE) composite films with high tensile strength, modulus, remarkable elongation as well as excellent electrical conductivity were successfully prepared by dispersing poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in CE matrix via the help of ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry results verified that a physical interaction junction existed between PBS and CE. Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showed that the low content PBS was uniformly dispersed in CE matrix, leading to a tough and ductile fractured surface. The elongation at break of CE composite film with 1 wt% PBS was increased to 25.9 %, which showed an increase of 325 % compared to that of neat CE film (6.07 %). But high-content PBS acted as the structural defect in the CE matrix. MWCNTs were further added to improve the mechanical and conductive properties of the composite film. The tensile strength and Young’s modulus of MWCNT/CE-PBS composite film with 4 wt% MWCNTs were respectively increased by 33.6 and 140 % compared to CE-PBS film. The electrical conductivity of MWCNT/CE-PBS film was also improved by 8–9 orders of magnitude from 2.5 × 10?14 to 1.3 × 10?5 S/m.  相似文献

In order to establish efficient enzyme-electrode-contacts for the pyrroloquinoline quinone dependent glucose dehydrogenase (PQQ-GDH) different immobilisation strategies are investigated. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) on gold electrodes are modified by chemical treatment and by (poly)-aniline derivatives. The electropolymerisation of methoxy-m-anilinesulfonic acid and m-aminobenzoic acid on the MWCNTs allows the covalent coupling of the PQQ-GDH. Such a poly-[ASA-ABA]/MWCNT/Au electrode can achieve current densities of up to 500 μA/cm2 at a potential of 100 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. Furthermore investigations with small amounts of free PQQ indicate direct electron transfer between enzyme and electrode.  相似文献
