A movable lug wheel using a rollers-sliding groove mechanism was designed, constructed and tested. Two types of lug moving patterns of the movable lug wheel were proposed and evaluated. Tests were conducted in a soil bin test apparatus to determine the traction performance of the wheel as affected by lug moving pattern, lug spacing, horizontal load and vertical load. Similar tests were also conducted using a fixed lug wheel. Generally, under the same level of vertical load, the fixed lug wheel sank more than the movable lug wheels did. However in general, under various horizontal loads, there was no significant difference of slip between the movable lug wheel and the fixed lug wheel. Among the test lug wheels, the movable lug wheel with lug moving pattern-2 required the smallest driving torque and developed the highest traction efficiency.  相似文献

Terramechanics plays an important role in determining the design and control of autonomous robots and other vehicles that move on granular surfaces. Traction capabilities, slippage, and sinkage of a robot are governed by the interaction of a robot’s appendage with the operating terrain. It is important to understand how the terrain flows under this appendage during such an interaction. In this work, dynamics of soil performance and locomotion performance of a lugged wheel travelling on soft soil are numerically investigated. Studies are conducted with a two-dimensional model by using the discrete element method to analyze the interactions between a lugged wheel and the soil. The soil performance is studied by examining the force distribution and evolution of force networks during the course of the wheel travel. For two different control modes, namely, slip-based wheel control and angular velocity-based wheel control, the performance parameters such as, sinkage, traction, traction efficiency, and power consumption of the wheel are compared for various wheel configurations. The findings of this work are expected to be useful for optimal design and control of the lugged wheel travelling on deformable surfaces.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of open spaces between grousers on gross traction using the discrete element method (DEM). We used a quasi-2D track shoe model in which we could control the open spacing between track shoes to observe the tractive performance experimentally. The gross traction and the sinkage of the grouser were measured on artificial sand. Moreover, we applied a 2D DEM analysis to the interaction between the open-spaced track shoes and the model soil. We confirmed the accuracy of the DEM analysis using the experiments. The analysis with the model dry sand could recreate the characteristic region of the soil under the shearing action, which depends on the track shoe spacing. The DEM also showed that the gross traction decreased with the increase in open spacing of the grousers. From the result of a 2D DEM analysis of a grouser for a prototype mesh crawler for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, we estimated a thrust coefficient of approximately 0.4 for a wider grouser pitch-to-height ratio of 4.0–7.75 because of the constant sinkage of the grouser, neglecting the role of the meshed belt.  相似文献

Grouser wheels have been used in planetary rovers to improve mobility performance on sandy terrains. The biggest difference between a wheel with and without grousers is the soil behavior beneath the wheel as the grousers shovel the soil. By analyzing the soil flow, we gain insight into the mechanics dominating the interaction between the wheel and the soil, directly impacting performance. As the soil flow varies depending on the soil properties, the effects of soil type on soil behavior and wheel-traveling performance should be studied. This paper reveals the difference in soil flow and wheel performance on cohesive and non-cohesive soils. We conducted a series of single wheel tests over different types of soils under several wheel-traveling conditions. Soil flow was visualized by using particle image velocimetry (PIV). The experimental results indicate that soil flow characteristics highly depend on the shear strength of the soil. The cohesive soil exhibited lower fluidity due to its higher shear strength. At the same time, the wheel displayed a higher traveling performance over the cohesive soil, that is, a lower slip ratio.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of a lugged wheel for a lunar micro rover on sloped terrain by a 2D discrete element method (DEM), which was initially developed for horizontal terrain. To confirm the applicability of DEM for sloped terrain locomotion, the relationships of slope angle with slip, wheel sinkage and wheel torque obtained by DEM, were compared with experimental results measured using a slope test bed consisting of a soil bin filled with lunar regolith simulant. Among the lug parameters investigated, a lugged wheel with rim diameter of 250 mm, width of 100 mm, lug height of 10 mm, lug thickness of 5 mm, and total lug number of 18 was found, on average, to perform excellently in terms of metrics, such as slope angle for 20% slip, power number for self-propelled point, power number for 15-degree slope and power number for 20% slip. The estimation of wheel performance over sloped lunar terrain showed an increase in wheel slip, and the possibility exists that the selected lugged wheel will not be able to move up a slope steeper than 20°.  相似文献

Nowadays, the existing walking wheels still have problems with the wheel-legs structure and the traction trafficability on the loose sand. It is commonly believed that African ostrich (Struthio camelus) is a kind of bipedal species with superior running performance on the sandy environment. Being enlightened by this, four bionic walking wheels (herringbone wheel, in-line wheel, V-shaped wheel and combination wheel) were designed and tested by imitating the structure and posture of ostrich’s feet travelling on sand. The results showed that when the wheel load was 20, 30 and 50N respectively and the slip ratio was less than 35%, the herringbone wheel had better traction trafficability than that of other wheels. When the wheel load was 30, 50 and 70N and the slip ratio was more than 35%, the in-line wheel had better performance than that of other wheels. It was shown in this thesis that the bionic walking wheels designed with the multi-posture wheel-legs and the simple structure could reduce the soil resistance and the disturbance to sand, thereby achieving a superior performance of traveling on sand. In addition, a new idea and research method for designing of walking mechanism on soft terrain has been provided in this thesis.  相似文献

Wheeled mobile robots are often used on high risk rough terrain. Sandy terrains are widely distributed and tough to traverse. To successfully deploy a robot in sandy environment, wheel-terrain interaction mechanics in skid should be considered. The normal and shear stress is the basis of wheel-soil interaction modeling, but the normal stress in the rear region on the contact surface is computed through symmetry in classical terramechanics equations. To calculate that directly, a new reference of wheel sinkage is proposed. Based on the new reference, both the wheel sinakge and the normal stress can be given using a quadratic equation as the function of wheel-soil contact angle. Moreover, the normal stress can be expressed as a linear function of the wheel sinkage by introducing a constant coefficient named as sand stiffness in this paper. The linearity is demonstrated by the experimental data obtained using two wheels and on two types of sands. The sand stiffness can be estimated with high accuracy and it decreases with the increase of skid ratio due to the skid-sinkage phenomenon, but increases with the increase of vertical load. Furthermore, the sand stiffness can be utilized directly to compare the stiffness of various sandy terrains.  相似文献

Because of the unique lunar environment, a suitable wheel for lunar rover decides the rover’s trafficability on deformable terrains. The wire mesh wheel (hereinafter referred to as WMW) has the advantages of light weight and superior stability, been widely adopted for lunar rovers. But a comprehensive research on performance of WMW on deformable terrains has not been conduct. This paper would provide particular study on a type WMW, including quasi-static pressure-sinkage test and driving performance. A novel pressure-sinkage model for the WMW on deformable soils was presented. In order to investigate the sinkage characteristics of the WMW, tests were performed using a single-wheel testbed for the WMW with different loads and velocities. The effects of load and velocity on sinkage were analyzed, and the relationship between real and apparent sinkage was presented. The research on traction performance of WMW under different slip ratios (0.1–0.6) was also conducted, contrast tests were proceed by using a normal cylindrical wheel (hereinafter referred to as CW). The traction performance of WMW is analyzed using performance indices including wheel sinkage, drawbar pull, driving torque, and tractive efficiency. The experimental results and conclusions are useful for optimal WMW design and improvement/verification of wheel–soil interaction mechanics model.  相似文献

On the Moon or Mars, typical target environments for exploration rovers are covered with fine sand, so their wheels easily slip on such weak ground. When wheel slippage occurs, it is hard for the rover to follow its desired route. In the worst case, the rover gets stuck in loose soil and cannot move anymore. To reduce the risk of the rover getting stuck, analysis of the contact mechanics between the soil and wheel is important. Various normal stress distribution models for under the wheel surface have been proposed so far. However, classical models assume a uniform stress distribution in the wheel’s width direction. In this study, we measured the two-dimensional normal stress distribution of a wheel in experiments. The results clarified that the stress distribution in the wheel’s width direction is a mountain-shape curve with a peak located at the center of the wheel. Based on the results, we constructed a stress distribution model for the wheel’s width direction. In this paper, we report our measurements for the two-dimensional stress distribution of a wheel on loose soil and introduce our stress distribution model for the wheel’s width direction based on our experimental results.  相似文献

The measurement of soil reaction forces on a lug of a movable lug cage wheel was carried out in a soil bin. To elucidate the experimental results, a theoretical analysis of soil reaction forces on the lug of the movable lug cage wheel was made by using an analysis of the lug trajectory and a modified theory in soil–vehicle mechanics. The existing theory was modified and adjusted by considering the actual lug trajectory and the soil trench made by the preceding lug. The results showed that the theoretical analysis gave a good representation of the reaction forces measured experimentally. The higher pull and lift forces of the movable lug cage wheel compared with those of the fixed lug wheel was supported by the theoretical analysis. Although the theoretical representation of soil reaction forces should be improved by further works, it is sufficiently accurate to estimate the performance of the movable lug cage wheels by the proposed theory.  相似文献

Open-source software (OSS) is free to use and has accessible source codes, thus, it can be modified by various users. By using OSS, it is possible to easily and economically develop a target program for interaction studies in terramechanics. Yet Another Dynamic Engine (YADE) is an OSS for the 3D discrete element method (DEM), but its applicability to various contact interaction problems in terramechanics is not well-known. To investigate the applicability of YADE in terramechanics, the tractive performance of a lugged wheel was analyzed in this study. An idea of a proportional-integral-differential control model was applied to realize the constant rotation of the wheel in YADE. Our previous experiments on the locomotion of a small lugged wheel on a lunar-soil simulant were analyzed by YADE, and the results were found to be qualitatively similar to the obtained experimental results when considering the effects of the lug height, lug thickness, lug number, and wheel diameter. By applying a quasi-2D analysis with the same soil bin width and wheel width, the computational load of 3D DEM by YADE can be reduced up to 36.8% with similar net traction behavior against the wheel slip in a 3D analysis.  相似文献

The general mechanism of tractive performance of a four-wheel vehicle with rear-wheel drive moving up and down a sloped sandy soil has been considered theoretically. For the given vehicle dimensions and terrain-wheel system constants, the relationships among the effective tractive or braking effort of the vehicle, the amount of sinkage of the front and rear wheels, and the slip ratio were analysed by simulation. The optimum eccentricity of the vehicle’s center of gravity and the optimum application height of the drawbar-pull for obtaining the largest value of maximum effective tractive or braking effort could be calculated by means of the analytical simulation program. For a 5.88 kN weight vehicle, it was found that the optimum eccentricity of the center of gravity eopt was 1/6 for the range of slope angle—0βπ/24 rad during driving action of the rear wheel and eopt was also 1/6 for the range of slope angle—π/24β0 rad during braking action of the rear wheel. The optimum application height Hopt was found to be 35 cm for the range of slope angle 0βπ/24 rad during driving action of the rear wheel and Hopt was 0 cm for the range of slope angle—π/24β0 rad during braking action of the rear wheel.  相似文献

The traffic performances during driving and braking of a 5.88 kN weight wheeled vehicle with two-axle four wheel drive, rear wheel drive, and front wheel drive running up and down a loose sandy sloped terrain were compared by means of a simulation. For the given dimensions of the vehicle and the given terrain-wheel system constants, the relationship between the effective tractive and braking effort of the vehicle, the amount of sinkage of the front and rear wheels, the total amount of sinkage of the vehicle, and the slip ratio were calculated to estimate the optimum height of force of application and the optimum eccentricity of the center of gravity of the vehicle. It was observed that, during driving action, the maximum effective tractive effort of the four wheel drive vehicle (4WD) was larger than that of the rear wheel drive vehicle (RWD), which in turn was greater than that of the front wheel drive vehicle (FWD). During the braking action, the effective braking effort at skid -20% of the four wheel vehicle (4WB) was larger than that of the front wheel brake vehicle (FWB), in turn greater than that of the rear wheel brake vehicle (RWB), when the two-axle four wheel vehicle is moving up or down the loose sandy sloped terrain. The maximum terrain slope angle up which the two-axle wheeled vehicle is able to move during driving action was found to be about 0.067π rad for the 4WD vehicle, about 0.031π rad for the RWD vehicle, and about 0.017π rad for the FWD vehicle. The effective braking effort at skid-20% of 4WB, FWB and RWB was found to decrease with slope angle.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to develop a numerical tool to simulate the performance of lugged wheels designed for a lunar microrover. The performance was analyzed using a Discrete Element Method (DEM) whose accuracy was validated for interactions between lugged wheels and soil. DEM analysis indicated that, on flat horizontal lunar surfaces, wheels with 18 10-mm-high lugs would provide less net traction than would wheels with 36 5-mm-high lugs.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical analysis on steering performance including tractive parameters and lug effects. To explore the difference between the turning and straight conditions of steering, a numerical sand model for steering is designed and appropriately established by the discrete element method on the basis of triaxial tests. From the point of mean values and variation, steering traction tests are conducted to analyze the tractive parameters including sinkage, torque and drawbar pull and the lug effects resulting from type, intersection and central angle. Analysis indicates that steering motion has less influence on the sinkage and torque. When the slip ratio exceeds 20%, the steering drawbar pull becomes increasingly smaller than in the straight condition, and the increase of steering radius contributes to a decline in mean values and a rise in variation. The lug effect of central angle is less influenced by the steering motion, but the lug intersection is able to significantly increase the steering drawbar pull along with the variation reduced. However, the lug inclination reduces the steering drawbar pull along with the variation raised in different degrees.  相似文献

A realistic prediction of the traction capacity of vehicles operating in off-road conditions must account for stochastic variations in the system itself, as well as in the operational environment. Moreover, for mobility studies of wheeled vehicles on deformable soil, the selection of the tire model used in the simulation influences the degree of confidence in the output. Since the same vehicle may carry various loads at different times, it is also of interest to analyze the impact of cargo weight on the vehicle’s traction.This study focuses on the development of an algorithm to calculate the tractive capacity of an off-road vehicle with stochastic vehicle parameters (such as suspension stiffness, suspension damping coefficient, tire stiffness, and tire inflation pressure), operating on soft soil with an uncertain level of moisture, and on a terrain topology that induces rapidly changing external excitations on the vehicle. The analysis of the vehicle–soil dynamics is performed for light cargo and heavy cargo scenarios. The algorithm relies on the comparison of the ground pressure and the calculated critical pressure to decide if the tire can be approximated as a rigid wheel or if it should be modeled as a flexible wheel. It also involves using previously-developed vehicle and stochastic terrain models, and computing the vehicle sinkage, resistance force, tractive force, drawbar pull, and tractive torque.The vehicle model used as a case study has seven degrees of freedom. Each of the four suspension systems is comprised of a nonlinear spring and a viscous (linear or magneto-rheological) damper. An off-road terrain profile is simulated as a 2-D random process using a polynomial chaos approach [Sandu C, Sandu A, Li L. Stochastic modeling of terrain profiles and soil parameters. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the flow patterns in a centrifugal pump when it works as a centripetal turbine, with special interest in the unsteady behavior in order to explain the shape of the performance curves. Also, we focus on the determination of the radial thrust and other mechanical loads over a pump‐designed machine. The pump studied is commercial, with single axial suction and a vaneless spiral volute casing. A numerical study has been carried out in order to obtain more information about the flow into the volute and the impeller. A numerical three‐dimensional unsteady simulation has been developed using a commercial code that solves the URANS set of equations with a standard k–ε turbulence model. The results show the non‐axisymmetric flow developed in the volute, responsible for a significant radial thrust; the interaction between the tongue and the impeller, generating force fluctuations; the velocity and pressure distributions inside the impeller; and the exit flow, characterized with post‐rotation and low‐pressure. These flow results allow us to understand the behavior of the machine by comparing it with the pump mode. Complementarily, an experimental study was conducted to validate the numerical model and characterize the pump‐turbine performance curves at constant head. Fast‐response pressure taps and a three‐hole pneumatic pressure probe were employed to obtain a complete data set of non‐stationary and stationary measurements throughout the centrifugal machine. As a result, loss of efficiency or susceptibility to cavitation, detected numerically, was confirmed experimentally. The study demonstrates that the numerical methodology presented here has shown its reliability and possibilities to predict the unsteady flow and time‐mean characteristics of centrifugal pumps working as turbines. In particular, it is shown that the commercial design of the pump allows a reasonable use of the impeller as a turbine runner, due to the suitable adaptation of the inflow distributions to the volute casing. Moreover, the efficiency for the inverse mode is shown to be as high as achieved for the pumping operational mode. In addition, it is concluded that both axial and radial thrusts are controlled, though important unsteady fluctuations—up to 25%—clocked with the blade passing frequency appear beyond the nominal conditions. In that case, a moderate use of the pump as a turbine is recommended in order to minimize risks of fatigue failure of the bearings. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The inflation of a five-ring cone parachute with the airflow velocity of 18 m/s is studied based on the simplified arbitrary Lagrange Euler (SALE)/fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method. The numerical results of the canopy shape, stability, opening load, and drag area are obtained, and they are well consistent with the experimental data gained from wind tunnel tests. The method is then used to simulate the opening process under different velocities. It is found that the first load shock affected by the velocity often occurs at the end of the initial inflation stage. For the first time, the phenomena that the inflation distance proportion coefficient increases and the dynamic load coefficient decreases, respectively, with the increase in the velocity are revealed. The above proposed method is competent to solve the large deformation problem without empirical coefficients, and can collect more space-time details of fluid-structure-motion information when it is compared with the traditional method.  相似文献

Tire tractive performance, soil behavior under the traffic, and multi-pass effect are among the key topics in the research of vehicle off-road dynamics. As an extension of the study (He et al., 2019a), this paper documents the testing of a tire moving on soft soil in the traction mode or towing mode, with a single pass or multiple passes, and presents the testing results mainly from the aspects of tire tractive performance parameters, soil behavior parameters, and multi-pass effect on these parameters. The influence of tire inflation pressure, initial soil compaction, tire normal load, or the number of passes on the test data has been analyzed; for some of the tests, the analysis was completed statistically. A multi-pass effect phenomenon, different from any phenomenon recorded in the available existing literature, was discovered and related to the ripple formation and soil failure. The research results of this paper can be considered groundwork for tire off-road dynamics and the development of traction controllers for vehicles on soft soil.  相似文献
