An experimental study was conducted to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a bio-inspired corrugated airfoil compared with a smooth-surfaced airfoil and a flat plate at the chord Reynolds number of Re C  = 58,000–125,000 to explore the potential applications of such bio-inspired corrugated airfoils for micro air vehicle designs. In addition to measuring the aerodynamic lift and drag forces acting on the tested airfoils, a digital particle image velocimetry system was used to conduct detailed flowfield measurements to quantify the transient behavior of vortex and turbulent flow structures around the airfoils. The measurement result revealed clearly that the corrugated airfoil has better performance over the smooth-surfaced airfoil and the flat plate in providing higher lift and preventing large-scale flow separation and airfoil stall at low Reynolds numbers (Re C  < 100,000). While aerodynamic performance of the smooth-surfaced airfoil and the flat plate would vary considerably with the changing of the chord Reynolds numbers, the aerodynamic performance of the corrugated airfoil was found to be almost insensitive to the Reynolds numbers. The detailed flow field measurements were correlated with the aerodynamic force measurement data to elucidate underlying physics to improve our understanding about how and why the corrugation feature found in dragonfly wings holds aerodynamic advantages for low Reynolds number flight applications.

In this study, two dimensional heat/mass transfer characteristics and flow features were investigated in a rectangular wavy duct with various corrugation angles. The test duct had a width of 7.3 mm and a large aspect ratio of 7.3 to simulate two dimensional characteristics. The corrugation angles used were 100°, 115°, 130°, and 145°. Numerical analysis using the commercial code FLUENT, was used to analyze the flow features. In addition, the oil-lamp black method was used for flow visualization. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the corrugated walls were measured using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The Reynolds number, based on the duct hydraulic diameter, was varied from 700 to 5,000. The experimental results and numerical analysis showed interesting and detailed features in the wavy duct. Main flow impinged on upstream of a pressure wall, and the flow greatly enhanced heat/mass transfer. On a suction wall, however, flow separation and reattachment dominantly affected the heat/mass transfer characteristics on the wall. As the corrugation angle decreased (it means the duct has more sharp turn), the region of flow stagnation at the front part of the pressure wall became wider. Also, the position of flow reattachment on the suction wall moved upstream as the corrugation angle decreased. A high heat transfer rate appeared at the front part of the pressure wall due to main-flow impingement, and at the front part of the suction wall due to flow reattachment. The high heat/mass transfer region by the main-flow impingement and the circulation flow induced at a valley between the pressure and suction walls changed with the corrugation angle and the Reynolds number. As the corrugation angle decreased, the flow in the wavy duct changed to transition to turbulent flow earlier.

In this paper, results of numerical and experimental studies are presented for a flapping two-dimensional (2D)elliptic airfoil in a forward flight condition at a Reynolds number of 5000.The study is motivated by the experiment of Read et al. (2003), which shows that the thrust coefficient of a 2D NACA0012 airfoil deteriorated at high flapping frequency (or Strouhal number) when the induced effective angle of attack profile ceases to be a simple harmonic function in time. As to why non-simple-harmonic profile of effective angle of attack is detrimental to thrust generation is not fully understood. The paper is an attempt to address this issue by examining the flow mechanism, including near field flow structures and the associated transient aerodynamic forces and pressure field, responsible for the observed behavior. Our results show that thrust suppression can be attributed to an adverse suction effect due to high rotation rate of the airfoil and the presence of an attached leading edge vortex generated in the previous stroke. The results further show that the condition for best efficiency need not necessary coincides with the condition of best thrust performance; this observation has been made in past studies of flapping flight.

This work aims at investigating the mechanisms of separation and the transition to turbulence in the separated shear-layer of aerodynamic profiles, while at the same time to gain insight into coherent structures formed in the separated zone at low-to-moderate Reynolds numbers. To do this, direct numerical simulations of the flow past a NACA0012 airfoil at Reynolds numbers Re = 50,000 (based on the free-stream velocity and the airfoil chord) and angles of attack AOA = 9.25° and AOA = 12° have been carried out. At low-to-moderate Reynolds numbers, NACA0012 exhibits a combination of leading-edge/trailing-edge stall which causes the massive separation of the flow on the suction side of the airfoil. The initially laminar shear layer undergoes transition to turbulence and vortices formed are shed forming a von Kármán like vortex street in the airfoil wake. The main characteristics of this flow together with its main features, including power spectra of a set of selected monitoring probes at different positions on the suction side and in the wake of the airfoil are provided and discussed in detail.

High-fidelity numerical simulations with the spectral difference (SD) method are carried out to investigate the unsteady flow over a series of oscillating NACA 4-digit airfoils. Airfoil thickness and kinematics effects on the flapping airfoil propulsion are highlighted. It is confirmed that the aerodynamic performance of airfoils with different thickness can be very different under the same kinematics. Distinct evolutionary patterns of vortical structures are analyzed to unveil the underlying flow physics behind the diverse flow phenomena associated with different airfoil thickness and kinematics and reveal the synthetic effects of airfoil thickness and kinematics on the propulsive performance. Thickness effects at various reduced frequencies and Strouhal numbers for the same chord length based Reynolds number (=1200) are then discussed in detail. It is found that at relatively small Strouhal number (=0.3), for all types of airfoils with the combined pitching and plunging motion (pitch angle 20°, the pitch axis located at one third of chord length from the leading edge, pitch leading plunge by 75°), low reduced frequency (=1) is conducive for both the thrust production and propulsive efficiency. Moreover, relatively thin airfoils (e.g. NACA0006) can generate larger thrust and maintain higher propulsive efficiency than thick airfoils (e.g. NACA0030). However, with the same kinematics but at relatively large Strouhal number (=0.45), it is found that airfoils with different thickness exhibit diverse trend on thrust production and propulsive efficiency, especially at large reduced frequency (=3.5). Results on effects of airfoil thickness based Reynolds numbers indicate that relative thin airfoils show superior propulsion performance in the tested Reynolds number range. The evolution of leading edge vortices and the interaction between the leading and trailing edge vortices play key roles in flapping airfoil propulsive performance.

The structure and dynamics of the flow field created by a plunging flat-plate airfoil are investigated at a chord Reynolds number of 10,000 while varying plunge amplitude and Strouhal number. Digital particle image velocimetry measurements are used to characterize the shedding patterns and the interactions between the leading- and trailing-edge vortex structures (LEV and TEV), resulting in the development of a wake classification system based on the nature and timing of interactions between the leading- and trailing-edge vortices. The streamwise advancement of the LEV during a plunge cycle and its resulting interaction with the TEV is primarily dependent on reduced frequency; however, for Strouhal numbers above approximately 0.4, significant changes are observed in the formation of vortices shed from the leading and trailing edges, as well as the circulation of the leading-edge vortex. The functional form of the relationship between leading-edge vortex circulation and Strouhal number suggests that the Strouhal number dependence is more specifically a manifestation of the effective angle of attack. Comparison with low-Reynolds-number studies of plunging airfoil aerodynamics reveals a high degree of consistency and suggests applicability of the classification system beyond the range examined in the present work.

The surface pressure distribution and the vortex shedding frequency were investigated for the flow around perforated horizontal and diagonal square cylinders with surface injection through various surfaces. For this purpose, surface pressure measurements on each square cylinder (horizontal and diagonal) and vortex shedding frequency measurements in the wake region were performed at three different Reynolds numbers in a wind tunnel. The parameters considered were injection coefficient, position of perforated surface (i.e., top, rear, top-rear and all), pressure coefficient, drag coefficient, and the Strouhal number. The results showed that pressure coefficient distribution, drag coefficient, and the Strouhal number were influenced by the position of the perforated surface and by the injection coefficient. The surface injections through the top-rear, rear and all surfaces of a diagonal square cylinder reduce the drag coefficient for the all Reynolds numbers, while the injection through all surfaces only reduces the drag coefficient of a horizontal square cylinder. The other aerodynamic parameter Strouhal number can also be controlled by injection through certain surfaces of a horizontal square cylinder.

The present paper presents time-resolved volumetric Particle Tracking Velocimetry measurements in a water towing tank on a SD7003 airfoil, performed at a Reynolds number of 60,000 and a 4° angle of attack. The SD7003 airfoil was chosen because of its long mid-chord and stable laminar separation bubble (LSB), occurring on the suction side of the airfoil at low Reynolds numbers. The present study focuses on the temporal resolution of unsteady large-scale vortex structures emitted from the LSB. In contrast to other studies, where only the observation of the flow in the transition region was examined, the entire flow from the leading edge to the far wake of the airfoil was investigated here.

Incompressible viscous flow past an airfoil at low Reynolds numbers is investigated on the basis of a numerical solution of the complete Navier-Stokes equations. Steady flow regimes, with and without separation, are obtained and, moreover, periodic regimes with the formation of a vortex trail in the wake. The frequency of vortex formation is determined by the linear dimension of the projection of the airfoil on the normal to the freestream velocity. The relation between the Strouhal and Reynolds numbers, determined from this linear dimension, depends only slightly on the angle of attack and shape of the airfoil and is similar to the experimental dependence for circular cylinders.Translated from Izvestiya Akademii Nauk SSSR, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No. 4, pp. 29–36, July–August, 1986.In conclusion the authors wish to express their warm thanks to G. I. Petrov for his interest in their work and valuable discussion of their results, and to V. P. Shkadova for discussing the formulation of the problem and the method of solution and for her constant readiness to advise on the organization of the calculations.

Flow characteristics around the square cylinder and their influence on the wake properties are studied. Time-averaged flow patterns on the surfaces of square cylinder in a cross-stream at incidence are experimentally probed by surface-oil flow technique and analyzed by flow topology for Reynolds numbers between 3.9×104 and 9.4×104 as the incidence angle changes from 0° to 45°. Vortex shedding characteristics are measured by a single-wire hot-wire anemometer for Reynolds numbers between 5×103 and 1.2×105. The effects of topological flow patterns on the wake properties then are revealed and discussed. Flows around the square cylinder are identified as three categories: the subcritical, supercritical, and wedge flows according to the prominently different features of the topological flow patterns. The Strouhal number of vortex shedding, turbulence in the wake, and wake width present drastically different behaviors in different characteristic flow regimes. A critical incidence angle of 15° separates the subcritical and supercritical regimes. At the critical incidence angle the wake width and shear-layer turbulence present minimum values. The minimum wake width appearing at the critical incidence angle, which leads to the maximum Strouhal number, is due to the reattachment of one of the separated boundary layer to the lateral face of the square cylinder. If the Strouhal numbers are calculated based on the wake width instead of the cross-stream projection width of cylinder, the data in the subcritical and supercritical regimes are well correlated into two groups, which would approach constants at high Reynolds numbers.

The paper reports on experiments carried out over a wide range of Reynolds numbers in a high pressure wind tunnel. The model was a sharp-edged rectangular cylinder with aspect ratio height/width 1:5 (width/span ratio 1:10.8), which was investigated in both basic orientations, lengthwise (4×103<Re<4×105) and perpendicular to the flow (2.7×104<Re<6.4×105). The Reynolds number is based on the height of the model normal to the flow. Steady and unsteady forces were measured with a piezoelectric balance. Thus along with steady (i.e. time averaged values) including the base pressure coefficient, also power spectra and probability density functions were measured yielding for example Strouhal numbers, higher statistical moments, etc. A response diagram for the vortex resonance phenomenon was taken for the natural bending motion of the slender model. If lift coefficient for constant angle of attack is plotted against Reynolds number, a significant Reynolds number effect is seen. For α=4°, the curve shows an inflection point and the lift varies between 0.3 and 0.6. For α=6° and 2° there are similar variations shifted to lower and higher values of Re, respectively. Probably the shapes of separation bubbles that depend on the Reynolds number are responsible for these effects. No Reynolds number effects were observed when the long side was normal to the flow, an orientation where reattachment at the side walls is not possible. Comparing both basic cases (α=0° and 90°), the interpretation of the probability distributions of lift force leads to the conclusion that the possibility of reattachment (α=0°) seems to enhance the degree of order in the vortex shedding process.

This study elucidates the relation between wake vortex shedding and aerodynamic force fluctuations for a low Reynolds number wing from time resolved particle image velocimetry (TR-PIV) experimental measurements. The results reveal a periodic lift and drag variation within the shedding cycle and resolve the frequencies of those fluctuations from a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and power spectral density (PSD) analysis. To show the effect of vortex shedding on the body force fluctuations, the evolution of instantaneous aerodynamic forces is compared to the pressure field of the fluid flow and to the vortical structures in the wake of the airfoil. A six step model describing the vortex-force relation is proposed. It shows that changes in lift such as maximum lift and minimum lift are associated with the detachment of a vortex. It also shows that the minimum or local minimum drag value is obtained at the onset formation of a vortex on the airfoil wake. Similarly, the maximum or local maximum drag is obtained at the onset formation of the saddle on the airfoil wake. The model further explains the asymmetry observed in the unsteady drag force evolution. The model can be used to optimize flow control and fluid-structure interaction applications.

This study presents the influence of pitch angle of an airfoil on its near-field vortex structure as well as the aerodynamic loads during a dynamic stall process. Dynamic stall behavior in a sinusoidally pitching airfoil is usually analyzed at low to medium reduced frequencies and with the maximum angle of attack of the airfoil not exceeding 25°. In this work, we study dynamic stall of a symmetric airfoil at medium to high reduced frequencies even as the maximum angle of attack goes from 25° to 45°. The evolution and growth of the laminar separation bubble, also known as a dynamic stall vortex, at the leading edge and the trailing edge are studied as the pitch cycle goes from the minimum to the maximum angle of attack. The effect of reduced frequencies on the vortex structure as well as the aerodynamic load coefficients is investigated. The reduced frequency is shown to be a bifurcation parameter triggering period doubling behavior. However, the bifurcation pattern is dependent on the variation of the pitch angle of incidence of the airfoil.

A numerical investigation on low‐Reynolds‐number external aerodynamics was conducted using the transitional unsteady Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes shear stress transport γ ?Reθ model and the ANSYS‐CFX computational fluid dynamics suite. The NACA 0012 airfoil was exposed to chord‐based Reynolds numbers of 5.0 ×104, 1.0 ×105 and 2.5 ×105 at 0°, 4°and 8°angles of attack. Time‐averaged and instantaneous flow features were extracted and compared with fully turbulent shear stress transport results, XFLR5 panel e N method results, and published higher order numerical and experimental studies. The current model was shown to reproduce the complex flow phenomena, including the laminar separation bubble dynamics and aerodynamic performance, with a very good degree of accuracy. The sensitivity of the model to domain size, grid resolution and quality, timestepping scheme, and free‐stream turbulence intensity was also presented. In view of the results obtained, the proposed model is deemed appropriate for modelling low‐Reynolds‐number external aerodynamics and provides a framework for future studies for the better understanding of this complex flow regime. Time-resolved surface pressure measurements are used to experimentally investigate characteristics of separation and transition over a NACA 0018 airfoil for the relatively wide range of chord Reynolds numbers from 50,000 to 250,000 and angles of attack from 0° to 21°. The results provide a comprehensive data set of characteristic parameters for separated shear layer development and reveal important dependencies of these quantities on flow conditions. Mean surface pressure measurements are used to explore the variation in separation bubble position, edge velocity in the separated shear layer, and lift coefficients with angle of attack and Reynolds number. Consistent with previous studies, the separation bubble is found to move upstream and decrease in length as the Reynolds number and angle of attack increase. Above a certain angle of attack, the proximity of the separation bubble to the location of the suction peak results in a reduced lift slope compared to that observed at lower angles. Simultaneous measurements of the time-varying component of surface pressure at various spatial locations on the model are used to estimate the frequency of shear layer instability, maximum root-mean-square (RMS) surface pressure, spatial amplification rates of RMS surface pressure, and convection speeds of the pressure fluctuations in the separation bubble. A power-law correlation between the shear layer instability frequency and Reynolds number is shown to provide an order of magnitude estimate of the central frequency of disturbance amplification for various airfoil geometries at low Reynolds numbers. Maximum RMS surface pressures are found to agree with values measured in separation bubbles over geometries other than airfoils, when normalized by the dynamic pressure based on edge velocity. Spatial amplification rates in the separation bubble increase with both Reynolds number and angle of attack, causing the accompanying decrease in separation bubble length. Values of the convection speed of pressure fluctuations in the separated shear layer are measured to be between 35 and 50% of the edge velocity, consistent with predictions of linear stability theory for separated shear layers.

A detailed numerical study is carried out to investigate fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in a channel with heated V corrugated upper and lower plates. The parameters studied include the Reynolds number (Re = 2,000–5,500), angles of V corrugated plates (θ = 20°, 40°, 60°), and constant heat fluxs (q″ = 580, 830, 1,090 W/m2). Numerical results have been validated using the experimented data reported by Naphon, and a good agreement has been found. The angles of V corrugated plates (θ) and the Reynolds number are demonstrated to significantly affect the fluid flow and the heat transfer rate. Increasing the angles of V corrugated plates can make the heat transfer performance become better. The increasing Reynolds number leads to a more complex fluid flow and heat transfer rate. The numerical calculations with a non-equilibrium wall function have a better accuracy than with a standard wall function for solving high Reynolds numbers or complex flow problems.

结果表明,前缘DBD控制中控制策略B(负攻角时开启上表面激励器,正攻角时开启下表面激励器)效果最好,后缘DBD控制中控制策略C(逆时针旋转时开启上表面激励器,顺时针旋转时开启下表面激励器)效果最好,前缘DBD控制效果会随着减缩频率的增大而下降, 同时会导致阻力增大.
