Flame retardant mixtures of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and intumescent flame retardant (IFR) were embedded in polypropylene (PP) to investigate what will happen if the additives exhibit two different flame retardation mechanisms. TEM tests showed that CNTs dispersed homogenously in PP matrix without any visible agglomeration. The effects of CNTs on thermal stability and flammability of PP were investigated by thermogravimetry (TG) and cone calorimetry tests, respectively. Results indicated that the introduction of CNTs only enhanced thermal stability of materials in a certain temperature range, but caused a severe deterioration of flame retardancy due to the interaction of the network structure and the intumescent carbonaceous char. Furthermore, conditions for an intumescent flame retardation system to behave with high efficiency were also discussed by a secondary combustion test.  相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) have been successfully functionalized with amino groups. In order to improve the thermal stability of the polymer nanocomposite, aminated-MWCNTs were added to acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS). The influence of MWCNT and phosphorus pentoxide nanostructures on the flame retardancy of the ABS matrix was studied using UL-94 test. The results show that the MWCNT nanostructure can’t enhance the flame retardancy of the ABS matrix but synergism of MWCNT and P2O5 can effectively improve the flame retardancy of the nanocomposite.  相似文献

This research explores the structural effect of phosphoramidates as flame retardants (FRs) for cotton cellulose. Flame retardant (FR) and thermal decomposition actions of phosphate such as triethyl phosphate (TEP), primary phosphoramidate such as diethyl phosphoramidate (DEPA) and secondary phosphoramidates such as phosphoramidic acid, N(2-hydroxy ethyl) diethylester (PAHEDE), diethyl ethyl phosphoramidate (DEEP) and diethyl 2-methoxyethylphosphoramidate (DEMEP) on cotton cellulose were investigated. Limiting oxygen index (LOI) of treated cotton cellulose showed that all phosphoramidates exhibited better flame retardant properties as compared to TEP. Secondary phosphoramidate PAHEDE had better flame retardant properties as compared to DEMEP and DEEP which indicate that flame retardancy of secondary phosphoramidates is structure related. Test performed on pyrolysis combustion flow calorimeter (PCFC) for treated cellulose showed higher reduction in heat of combustion for efficient FRs (PAHEDE, DEPA). Evolved gas analysis using thermogravimetric analyzer-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA-FTIR) and thermogravimetric analyzer-mass spectrometer (TGA-MS) of treated cellulose showed that phosphoramidates could catalyze the dehydration and char formation of cellulose at a lower temperature. The enhanced flame retardant action of phosphoramidate may be due to the catalytic thermal decomposition of the phosphoramidate structure to produce acidic intermediates which could react with cellulose to alter its thermal decomposition.  相似文献

Nanosized carbon black (CB) was introduced into polypropylene/carbon nanotubes (PP/CNTs) nanocomposites to investigate the effect of multi‐component nanofillers on the thermal stability and flammability properties of PP. The obtained ternary nanocomposites displayed dramatically improved thermal stability compared with neat PP and PP/CNTs nanocomposites. Moreover, the flame retardancy of resultant nanocomposites was greatly improved with a significant reduction in peak heat release rate and increase of limited oxygen index value, and it was strongly dependent on the content of CB. This enhanced effect was attributed mainly to the formation of good carbon protective layers by CB and CNTs during combustion. Rheological properties further confirmed that CB played an important role on promoting the formation of crosslink network on the base of PP/CNTs system, which were also responsible for the improved thermal stability and flame retardancy of PP. Three different boron containing materials, zinc borate (ZnB), borophosphate (BPO4), and boron and silicon containing oligomer (BSi), were used to improve the flame retardancy of melamine cyanurate (MC) in a polyamide‐6 (PA‐6) matrix. The combustion and thermal degradation characteristics were investigated using limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL‐94 standard, thermogravimetric analysis‐Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TGA‐FTIR), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All the three boron compounds showed no synergistic effect with MC, and only BPO4 at high loadings showed comparable LOI values by increasing the dripping rate. For ZnB and BSi glassy film and char formation decreases the dripping rate and sublimation of melamine and give rise to low LOI. According to TGA‐FTIR results, addition of boron compounds does not alter the gaseous product distribution of both MC and PA‐6. The addition of boron compounds affects flame retardancy through physical means. It was noted from the TGA data that boron compounds reduced the decomposition temperature of both MC and PA‐6, also affecting the flame retardancy negatively by premature degradation of MC at low temperatures. Various nitrogen-phosphorus (P-N) compounds based on phosphoramidate were synthesized as model compounds to investigate the relationships among the chemical structure of linker connecting diphenylphoryl groups between the phosphoramidates, the N content, thermal stability, and flame-retarding ability. The flame-retarding efficiencies were evaluated by the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL-94 vertical test methods. It was found that bisphosphoramidates are more thermally stable and produce more charred residues when compared to the corresponding bisphosphate compounds. Aromatic phosphoramidates show fairly good flame retardancy for PC and UL-94 V-0 ratings are achieved with addition of as small amount as 3-5 wt%. However, no rating is found for ABS at 30 wt% loading of bisphosphoramidate FRs which leave the remarkably high residues at 600 °C. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results indicate that these compounds work in condensed phase rather than in gas phase. The effect of chemical structure of linker on the flame retardancy is also discussed.  相似文献

Multishell nanotubes of polyaniline and carbon were synthesized via a template approach. A thin layer of MnO2 coated on carbon nanotubes acts as a reactive template for the consequent formation of the polyaniline coating. The polyaniline-carbon nanotubes show enhanced dispersibility in water and can be possibly used as a functional material of electrochemical capacitors with improved performance. The general method operates by coating carbon nanotubes on functional materials such as poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene), polypyrrole, silica, and carbon.  相似文献

Different carbonaceous materials, such as single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and glassy carbon submitted to an electrochemical activation at +1.80 V (vs. SCE) for 900 s, have been used with the aim of comparing their performances in the development of enzyme electrodes. Commercial SWCNTs have been pretreated with 2.2 M HNO3 for 20 h prior to use. The utility of activated GC as promising material for amperometric oxidase‐based biosensors has been confirmed. With glucose oxidase (GOx) as a model enzyme, glucose was efficiently detected up to 1 mM without the use of a mediator. Both electrodes operated in stirred solutions of 0.1 M phosphate buffer (pH 5.5), containing dissolved oxygen, at a potential of ?0.40 V vs. SCE. Although the performances of the two carbonaceous materials were comparable, the biosensors based on activated GC were characterized by a practically unchanged response 40 days after the fabrication, a better signal to noise ratio, and a little worse sensitivity. In addition, the preparation procedure of such biosensors was more simple, rapid and reproducible.  相似文献

A novel charring agent poly(p-propane terephthalamide) (PPTA) was synthesized by using terephthaloyl chloride and 1,3-propanediamine through solution polycondensation and it was used together with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) to prepare a novel intumescent flame retardant (IFR) for ABS. The thermal degradation behaviour and flame retardancy were investigated, the results showed that PPTA could be effective as a charring agent, the flame retardancy of ABS and the mass of residues improved greatly with the addition of IFR. When the content of APP was 22.5 mass% and PPTA was 7.5 mass%, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of IFR-ABS system was found to be 32.4, and class V-0 of UL-94 test was passed. Moreover, the synergistic effects of two different adjuvants AlPi and MnO2 in IFR-ABS system have been studied.  相似文献

A series of new functionalised carbonaceous materials were prepared by means of oxidation and ammoxidation of commercially available multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The effect of oxygen and nitrogen doping on the textural, surface as well as thermal properties of the prepared adsorbents was tested. The materials were characterized by elemental analysis, low-temperature nitrogen sorption, determination of the surface oxygen groups content as well as by coupled thermogravimetric and spectroscopic methods (TG/DSC/MS). Depending of the variant of raw nanotubes modification, the final products were oxygen- and nitrogen-doped materials of medium-developed surface area and mesoporous structure, showing highly diverse acidic-basic character of the surface, from the weakly acidic to slightly alkaline.  相似文献

Kenaf fibers have been extensively explored from the past few decades in polymer composites industries owing to its extensive adaptations, excellent properties together with its comparable mechanical properties to traditional glass fibers polymer composites. The combustibility or lowered flame retardancy hampered the diverse applications of kenaf fibers reinforced polymer composites, as it affects the mechanical strength and stiffness of composites during fire. Current review article intended to be a comprehensive source of published literature involving the flame retardants (FRs), types and applications of FRs and the fabrication of kenaf fibers reinforced polymer composites. This article will also provide a perfect data on the recent development of the FR kenaf fibers polymer composites with different FRs and explored its structural and semi‐structural industrial application for performing further research in this topic. The goal of this work was the synthesis of novel flame-retarded polyurethane rigid foam with a high percentage of castor oil phosphate flame-retarded polyol (COFPL) derived from renewable castor oil. Rigid flame-retarded polyurethane foams (PUFs) filled with expandable graphite (EG) and diethyl phosphate (TEP) were fabricated by cast molding. Castor oil phosphate flame-retarded polyol was derived by glycerolysis castor oil (GCO), H2O2, diethyl phosphate and catalyst via a three-step synthesis. Mechanical property, morphological characterization, limiting oxygen index (LOI) and thermostability analysis of PUFs were assessed by universal tester, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), oxygen index testing apparatus, cone calorimeter and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It has been shown that although the content of P element is only about 3%, the fire retardant incorporated in the castor oil molecule chain increased thermal stability and LOI value of polyurethane foam can reach to 24.3% without any other flame retardant. An increase in flame retardant was accompanied by an increase in EG, TEP and the cooperation of the two. Polyurethane foams synthesized from castor oil phosphate flame-retarded polyol showed higher flame retardancy than that synthesized from GCO. The EG, in addition to the castor oil phosphate, provided excellent flame retardancy. This castor oil phosphate flame-retarded polyol with diethyl phosphate as plasticizer avoided foam destroy by EG, thus improving the mechanical properties. The flame retardancy determined with two different flame-retarded systems COFPL/EG and EG/COFPL/TEP flame-retarded systems revealed increased flame retardancy in polyurethane foams, indicating EG/COFPL or EG/COFPL/TEP systems have a synergistic effect as a common flame retardant in castor oil-based PUFs. This EG/COFPL PUF exhibited a large reduction of peak of heat release rate (PHRR) compared to EG/GCO PUF. The SEM results showed that the incorporation of COFPL and EG allowed the formation of a cohesive and dense char layer, which inhibited the transfer of heat and combustible gas and thus increased the thermal stability of PUF. The enhancement in flame retardancy will expand the application range of COFPL-based polyurethane foam materials.  相似文献

The flame retardancy of poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) containing aluminium diethlyphosphinate (AlPi) and/or nanometric metal oxides such as TiO2 or Al2O3 was investigated. In particular the different active flame retardancy mechanisms were discovered. Thermal analysis, evolved gas analysis (TG-FTIR), flammability tests (LOI, UL 94), cone calorimeter measurements and chemical analyses of residues (ATR-FTIR) were used. AlPi acts mainly in the gas phase through the release of diethylphosphic acid, which provides flame inhibition. Part of AlPi remains in the solid phase reacting with the PBT to phosphinate-terephthalate salts that decompose to aluminium phosphate at higher temperatures. The metal oxides interact with the PBT decomposition and promote the formation of additional stable carbonaceous char in the condensed phase. A combination of metal oxides and AlPi gains the better classification in the UL 94 test thanks to the combination of the different mechanisms.  相似文献

In this paper, GO-BN(graphene oxide grafted boron nitride) was synthesized from graphene oxide and boron nitride by silane coupling agent KH550. Furthermore, GO-BN and intumescent flame retardant (IFR) were added into natural rubber (NR) simultaneously to improve its flame retardancy. The structure of GO-BN was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The analysis showed that GO-BN was successfully synthesized. The enhanced flame retardancy performance of flame retardant natural rubber (FRNR) was evaluated by limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL-94 tests. Moreover, the combustion action of FRNR in fire was evaluated by cone calorimetry. Notably, the results showed that the sample with a GO-BN content of 12 phr showed the best flame retardancy performance. The heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release rate (THR) were remarkably decreased by 42.8% and 19.4%, respectively. Carbon residues were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, which showed that GO-BN and IFR had a synergistic catalytic effect. The formation of compact thermal stable carbon layer after combustion was the key to protect engineering materials from combustion.  相似文献

A ternary sol containing silicon, phosphorus and boron modified by ??-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane was synthesized by sol?Cgel method. The ternary sol was incorporated into the organic matrix and UV-curable organic/inorganic hybrid coating materials were obtained. Hardness, transmittance, haze, cross-cut adhesion and abrasion resistance results showed that the mechanical properties of the hybrid coatings improved effectively with no comprising on optical properties by increasing sol content. Scanning electron microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectrometer studies indicated that inorganic particles were homogenously dispersed in the organic matrix. The flame retardancy of the UV-curable coatings was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and microscale combustion calorimeter. The results showed that the incorporation of sol into the organic network led to an improvement in the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the hybrid coating materials. It is a desirable achievement to improve simultaneously both flame retardancy and mechanical properties of the coatings.  相似文献

As flammable natural rubber (NR) becomes more ubiquitous in industrial fields, there is a growing need for safe and effective flame retardant treatments through efficient techniques. Remarkably, our developed highly efficient natural tannic acid (TA)-based intumescent flame-retardant system (AGT) has the unique function in the rubber flame retardant aspect. Meanwhile, the developed coating method through polyurethane elastomer (PU) both as adhesive medium and a carbonforming agent can not only minimize the influence of flame retardant on the desirable intrinsic properties of base polymer and also maximize the efficiency of flame retardant. The flame-retardant coating (AGT/PU) exhibits highly efficient flame retardant performances reflected by a 31.9% reduction in peak heat release rate and a 27.3% reduction in total heat release and a 26.2% reduction in total smoke production with 50 wt% loading in 1 mm thick coating due to synergistic flame retardant effects. More importantly, the excellent flame retardancy performance are obtained by the PU@AGT10, as reflected in flame retardancy index (FRI) value of 11.88 makes it as excellent flame retardancy performance. While many physically mixed flame retardants are usually seriously detrimental to mechanical properties of NR, the influence of AGT/PU coating on mechanical properties of NR decreases obviously because fire retardant just directly impacts on PU adhesive layer rather than NR matrix, and the reinforcement function of graphene is also much significant. Moreover, the coating method requires just less flame retardant to achieve high flame retardant effect for NR. These findings suggest that significant opportunities for flame retardant polymer materials in industry.  相似文献

In recent years, nanocarbon materials have attracted the interest of researchers due to their excellent properties. Nanocarbon-based flame retardant polymer composites have enhanced thermal stability and mechanical properties compared with traditional flame retardant composites. In this article, the unique structural features of nanocarbon-based materials and their use in flame retardant polymeric materials are initially introduced. Afterwards, the flame retardant mechanism of nanocarbon materials is described. The main discussions include material components such as graphene, carbon nanotubes, fullerene (in preparing resins), elastomers, plastics, foams, fabrics, and film–matrix materials. Furthermore, the flame retardant properties of carbon nanomaterials and their modified products are summarized. Carbon nanomaterials not only play the role of a flame retardant in composites, but also play an important role in many aspects such as mechanical reinforcement. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for future development of carbon nanomaterials in flame-retardant polymeric materials are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Brominated flame retardant polystyrene composites were prepared by melt blending polystyrene, decabromodiphenyl oxide, antimony oxide, multi-wall carbon nanotubes and montmorillonite clay. Synergy between carbon nanotubes and clay and the brominated fire retardant was studied by thermogravimetric analysis, microscale combustion calorimetry and cone calorimetry. Nanotubes are more efficient than clay in improving the flame retardancy of the materials and promoting carbonization in the polystyrene matrix. Comparison of the results from the microscale combustion calorimeter and the cone calorimeter indicate that the rate of change of the peak heat release rate reduction in the microscale combustion calorimeter was slower than that in the cone. Both heat release capacity and reduction in the peak heat release rate in the microscale combustion calorimeter are important for screening the flame retardant materials; they show good correlations with the cone parameters, peak heat release rate and total heat released.  相似文献

Sb2O3 nanoparticles were synthesized via a simple surfactant-free sonochemical reaction. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) have been successfully functionalized with amino groups. Cellulose acetate (CA) as a polymeric matrix was choosing in this work. In order to improve the thermal stability and flame retardancy of the CA, nanoparticles, aminated-MWCNT and trichloromelamine (TCM) were added to the polymeric matrix. The nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and UL-94 analysis. Flame retardancy of the nanocomposite was improved as a result of synergistic effect between Sb2O3 and TCM. Result show that thermal decomposition of the nanocomposites was shifted towards higher temperatures.  相似文献
