Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) were synthesized by catalytic chemical vapor deposition using Fe-Mo/MgO as a catalyst at 1000 degrees C under the mixture of methane and hydrogen gas. The nanotubes were purified by acid but were not damaged. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed the purity of the tubes to be about 90%. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy image showed that DWCNTs have inner tube diameters of 1.4-2.6 nm and outer tube diameters of 2.3-3.4 nm. We observed radial breathing modes in Raman spectra, which are related to the diameter of inner nanotubes. The purified DWCNTs were mixed with organic vehicles and glass frit, and then they were screen-printed on glass substrate coated with indium tin oxide. The field emission properties of the screen-printed DWCNT films were examined by varying the amount of glass frit ingredient within the DWCNT paste. The results showed that DWCNT emitters had good emission properties such as turn-on field of 1.33-1.78 V/microm and high brightness. When the applied anode voltage was gradually increased, current density and brightness became saturated. We also observed DWCNTs adsorbed on the anode plate; they were DWCNTs peeled off from the cathode plate for field emission measurement.  相似文献

The electron-transfer reduction of cup-stacked carbon nanotubes (CSCNTs) with sodium naphthalenide and the subsequent treatment with 1-iodododecane results in electrostatically destacking of CSCNTs to afford cup-shaped carbons with controlled diameter and size. The dodecylated cup-shaped carbons were highly dispersed and stable in nonpolar solvents, such as THF, tetrachloroethylene, and chloroform, as compared with the pristine CSCNTs.  相似文献

Vertically-aligned diameter-controlled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are synthesised by the plasma enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) method using multi-layers of self-assembled catalytic ligand-coated iron oxide nanoparticles. We find that the mono-dispersed nanoparticles play a vital role for the production of diameter-controlled CNTs. A new growth model is also proposed based on the experimental results. The present results may make a great contribution to the development and design of mechanical, electronic and biomedical devices, in which diameter-controlled CNTs are utilised.  相似文献

Carbon-containing gases usually present when preparing carbon nanotubes, and can affect the field emission of carbon nanotubes. Water vapor is also an important kind of gas for field emission, concerned by both experimental and theoretical studies. Under strong electric field, the gas molecules may be decomposed to radicals. Using DMol3 code based on density-functional theory, we calculated the adsorption of the gas molecules CH4, CO and H2O and the CH3 and OH radicals under emission conditions. We found that the H2O and the methyl have advantages to field emission and the CH4, CO and the hydroxyl have disadvantages. The results of H2O and CO are consistent with experiments, and the enhancement of current by CH4 in the experiment may be due to the methyl decomposed from the CH4.  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes exhibit strong antimicrobial activity   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We provide the first direct evidence that highly purified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) exhibit strong antimicrobial activity. By using a pristine SWNT with a narrow diameter distribution, we demonstrate that cell membrane damage resulting from direct contact with SWNT aggregates is the likely mechanism leading to bacterial cell death. This finding may be useful in the application of SWNTs as building blocks for antimicrobial materials.  相似文献

In this work, the tree-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with branches of different diameters and the wing-like CNTs with graphitic-sheets of different densities were synthesized by using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The nanostructures of the as-prepared hybrid carbon materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The structural dependence of field electron emission (FEE) property was also investigated. It is found that both of the tree- and wing-like CNTs exhibit a lower turn-on field and higher emission current density than the pristine CNTs, which can be ascribed to the effects of branch size, crystal orientation, and graphitic-sheet density.  相似文献

A single-walled carbon nanotube was exploited for its semi-flexible pseudo-one-dimensional nanostructure as a unique scaffold to display multivalent carbohydrate ligands, with a specific demonstration showing that galactosylated carbon nanotubes were effective in the capturing of pathogenic Escherichia coli in solution.  相似文献

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were directly synthesized by a hydrogen arc-discharge method by using only Fe catalyst. The synthesized carbon materials indicated high-purity SWCNTs without amorphous carbon materials from SEM observation. The SWCNTs had diameters of 1.5-2.0 nm from TEM and Raman observation. After a simple purification, TGA indicated that SWCNTs had a purity of ca. 90.1 wt %. Field emission from the SWCNT emitters which were fabricated by using a spray method was measured by a diode structure. The vertically aligned SWCNT emitters showed the low turn-on voltage of 0.86 V/microm and a high emission-current density of 3 mA/cm2 at an applied field of about 3 V/microm. From a Fowler-Nordheim plot, the vertically aligned SWCNT revealed a high field enhancement factor of 2.35 x 10(4). The photoemission measurements, excited by a photon energy of 360 eV, showed significantly delocalized graphite-pi states at the purified SWCNTs. Here, we investigated that the field-emission properties of SWCNTs would be attributed to the high electronic density of states near Fermi energy, including the delocalized graphite-pi states.  相似文献

The electrospinning process was used successfully to embed single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) matrix, forming composite nanofibers. Initial dispersion of SWCNTs in water was achieved by the use of an amphiphilic alternating copolymer of styrene and sodium maleate. The resulting dispersions were stable, having a dark, smooth, ink-like appearance. For electrospinning, the dispersions were mixed with PEO solution in an ethanol/water mixture. The distribution and conformation of the nanotubes in the nanofibers were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Oxygen plasma etching was used to expose the nanotubes within the nanofibers to facilitate direct observation. Nanotube alignment within the nanofibers was shown to depend strongly on the quality of the initial dispersions. Well-dispersed and separated nanotubes were embedded in a straight and aligned form, while entangled nonseparated nanotubes were incorporated as dense aggregates. X-ray diffraction demonstrated a high degree of orientation of the PEO crystals in the electrospun nanofibers with embedded SWCNTs. This result is in pronounced distinction to the detrimental effect of incorporation of multiwalled carbon nanotubes on polymer orientation in electrospun nanofibers, as reported previously.  相似文献

We have used a mechanochemical high-speed vibration milling (HSVM) technique to solubilize single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in organic solvents through the formation of complexes between the SWNTs and a polythiophene (PT) derivative. This HSVM approach is superior to the conventional sonication method used to solubilize SWNTs in organic solvents. Moreover, we found that in these supramolecular complexes the PT chains were ordered one-dimensionally on the SWNT surfaces in organic solvents. [structure: see text].  相似文献

The electronic structure of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been investigated, depending on the growth temperature, using synchrotron X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and field emission measurements. The vertically aligned CNTs are grown via pyrolysis of ferrocene and acetylene in a broad temperature range 600-1000 degrees C. The CNTs have a cylindrical structure with a uniform diameter of 20 nm. As growth temperature increases, due to an improved crystallinity of the graphitic sheets, the width of the XPS C 1s peak becomes narrower and the intensity of the valence band increases. Field emission from the as-grown CNTs exhibits a large enhancement of current density with growth temperature, strongly correlated with the electronic structure revealed by XPS.  相似文献

This work describes a simple technique for direct patterning of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT-PSS) composite electrodes in a large area on a substrate based on the solution transfer process by microcontact printing using poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) stamps. Various shapes of SWNT/PEDOT-PSS composite patterns, such as line, circle, and square, can be easily fabricated with high pattern fidelity and structural integrity. The single parallel line pattern device exhibits high electrical conductivity (0.75 × 10(5) S/m) and electronic stability because of alignment of nanotubes and big-size SWNT bundles (~5 nm). The electromechanical study reveals that the composite patterns show ~1% resistance change along SWNT alignment direction and ~5% resistance change along vertical alignment direction after 200 bend cycles. Our approach provides a facile, low-cost method to pattern transparent conductive SWNT/polymer composite electrodes and demonstrates a novel platform for future integration of conducting SWNT/polymer composite patterns for optoelectronic applications.  相似文献

We have investigated systematically the effects of various gas adsorbates (H2, N2, O2, and H2O) on the electronic structures and the field emission properties of open edges of single-walled carbon nanotubes by density functional calculations. All of the molecules, except N2, dissociate and chemisorb on open nanotube edges with large adsorption energies. The Fermi levels are moved toward the valence (conduction) bands for O2 (H2, H2O) adsorption induced by the Mulliken charge transfer on the tube edge. The Fermi level shift for N2 adsorption is negligible. Adsorption of H2O enhances the field emission current, whereas H2 adsorption does not affect the field emission current much because of the absence of the density of states near the Fermi level. The correlation of the electronic structures and the field emission current is further discussed.  相似文献

Gel electrophoresis and column chromatography conducted on individually dispersed, ultrasonicated single-walled carbon nanotubes yield simultaneous separation by tube length and diameter. Electroelution after electrophoresis is shown to produce highly resolved fractions of nanotubes with average lengths between 92 and 435 nm. Separation by diameter is concomitant with length fractionation, and nanotubes that have been cut shortest also possess the greatest relative enrichments of large-diameter species. Longer sonication time causes increased electrophoretic mobility in the gels; thus, ultrasonic processing determines the degree of both length and diameter separation of the nanotubes. The relative quantum yield decreases nonlinearly as the nanotube length becomes shorter. These techniques constitute a preparative, scalable method for separating nanotubes by two important attributes required for electronic and sensor applications.  相似文献

The dispersibility and bundle defoliation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) of small diameter (<1 nm) have been evaluated on CoMoCAT samples with narrow distribution of diameters. As previously observed by photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy, the CoMoCAT sample exhibits a uniquely narrow distribution of (n,m) structures that remains unchanged after different dispersion conditions. This narrow distribution allowed us to develop a method for quantifying the dispersability of the samples from their optical absorption spectra in terms of two ratios: the "resonance ratio" and the "normalized width." The former is defined as the quotient of the resonant band area and its nonresonant background. The latter is defined as the ratio of the width of the band at half-height to the peak height on a spectrum that has been normalized at 900 nm, making this an intensive property, rather than varying with the path length. In this study of the CoMoCAT sample, we have used the S22 transition corresponding to the (6,5) nanotube to do these calculations, which is the most abundant species. These two ratios provide a quantitative tool to compare different dispersion parameters (time of sonication, degree of centrifugation, etc.) on the same type of sample. From this comparison, an optimal procedure that maximizes the spectral features was selected; this procedure allowed us to contrast various surfactants at different pH values and concentrations. Several surfactants were as good or even better than the one we have used in previous studies, dodecylbenesulfonic acid sodium salt (NaDDBS). Despite differences in their dispersion abilities, none of the surfactants investigated generated new features in the absorption spectra nor changed the distribution of nanotube types, which confirms that the high selectivity of the CoMoCAT sample is in the original sample rather than caused by selective suspension of specific (n,m) nanotubes.  相似文献

Vertical array growth of small diameter single-walled carbon nanotubes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A hot filament chemical vapor deposition method has been developed to grow vertical array single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). In this study, a hot filament (temperature greater than 2000 degrees C) was used to activate gas mixtures of hydrogen and carbon containing species at sub-atmospheric pressures. Silicon substrates decorated with islands of iron were directly inserted into a preheated furnace in which a hot filament is activating the gas. Vertical arrays of SWNTs are produced with diameters ranging from 0.78 to 1.6 nm. The samples were characterized with Raman and fluorescence spectroscopy and SEM and TEM microscopy.  相似文献

The chemical, electrophysical, magnetic, tribological, and physicomechanical properties of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), as well as the characteristics of new nanocomposites and instruments thereof were discussed. These MWCNTs are produced by unique technology and are free from impurities of other carbon modifications. Advantages of multiwall over single-wall carbon nanotubes were demonstrated for applications in electronic devices and preparation of nanocomposites (as filling agents).  相似文献

Aligned carbon nanotube films have been studied with a wide variety of characterization techniques. Although nanotubes resemble bulk graphite as far as carrier densities, susceptibilities and conductivities are concerned, transport properties and ESR measurments indicate that carrier localization occurs at low temperatures. Nanotube films are good field emitters producing large currents at relatively low electric fields. The performance is superior to the intensely studied CVD diamond films in particular for the threshold field for electron emission. We believe that the observed remarkable electron emission is related to the special electronic structure of the nanotube tips.  相似文献

An effective and versatile method for tube-length-specific functionalization of carbon nanotubes through a controllable embedment of vertically-aligned carbon nanotubes into polymer matrices is reported, which allows not only asymmetric functionalization of nanotube sidewalls, but also facile introduction of new properties (e.g. magnetic) onto the region-selectively functionalized carbon nanotubes.  相似文献
