Newtonian liquids and non-Newtonian soft solids were squeezed between parallel glass plates by a constant force F applied at time t=0. The plate separation h(t) and the squeeze-rate were measured for different amplitudes of plate roughness in the range 0.3–31 m. Newtonian liquids obeyed the relation Vh 3 of Stephan (1874) for large plate separations. Departures from this relation that occurred when h approached the roughness amplitude were attributed to radial liquid permeation through the rough region. Most non-Newtonian materials showed boundary-slip that varied with roughness amplitude. Some showed slip that varied strongly during the squeezing process. Perfect slip (zero boundary shear stress) was not approached by any material, even when squeezed by optically-polished plates. If the plates had sufficient roughness amplitude (e.g. about 30 m), boundary slip was practically absent, and the dependence of V on h was close to that predicted by no-slip theory of a Herschel-Bulkley fluid in squeeze flow (Covey and Stanmore 1981, Adams et al. 1994).  相似文献

A mathematical formulation for the contact of rough surfaces is presented. The derivation of the contact model is facilitated through the definition of plastic asperities that are assumed to be embedded at a critical depth within the actual surface asperities. The surface asperities are assumed to deform elastically whereas the plastic asperities experience only plastic deformation. The deformation of plastic asperities is made to obey the law of conservation of volume. It is believed that the proposed model is advantageous since (a) it provides a more accurate account of elastic-plastic behavior of surfaces in contact and (b) it is applicable to model formulations that involve asperity shoulder-to-shoulder contact. Comparison of numerical results for estimating true contact area and contact force using the proposed model and the earlier methods suggest that the proposed approach provides a more realistic prediction of elastic-plastic contact behavior.  相似文献

A fuel pollutant migrating in a water flow throughout a porous medium is distributed between the moving (continuous) and residual (discontinuous) phases. Usually, there is an equilibrium condition between these phases. In this study, the migration of a fuel slug confied within free boundaries moving in the porous medium is considered. This type of fuel migration pertains to circumstances in which convective fuel transport dominates fuel dispersion when fuel saturation approaches zero. A one-dimensional self-similar model is developed, describing the movement of fuel saturation fronts in a porous medium against and with the water flow direction. Several analytical solutions are found revealing the effects of the pore size, fuel viscosity, fuel mass, and the capillary number on the fuel migration in the porous medium.  相似文献

The transformations, which are similar to Mangler’s transformations, are given in this paper. They change the entrance region flow of axially symmetrical laminar boundary layer between two parallel spherical surfaces into the flow of two-dimensional boundary layer, and simplify the problems. The simplified equations can be solved by the two-dimensional boundary layer theory and numerical methods. Therefore, a new way is opened up to solve the diffusive laminar flow in the entrance region between two parallel spherical surfaces.  相似文献
