We have synthesized new phenylacetylene-based liquid crystals containing a cyclohexyl or cyclohexylethyl group and evaluated their physical properties in order to develop a range of materials having high value of birefringence. The cyclohexyl-containing compounds exhibited nematic behaviour near room temperature and moderate values of δn of around 0.3. The cyclohexylethyl-containing compounds had a very wide nematic range with a high TNI and very high values of δn of over 0.4. They also exhibited low viscosities. The order parameter was not affected by introducing either a cyclohexyl or a cyclohexylethyl group and the values of δn based on calculated polarizabilities were obtained experimentally.  相似文献

Six series of laterally fluorinated liquid crystals containing 1,3,2-dioxaborinane and cyclohexyl units have been synthesized and characterized. Their mesomorphic properties were characterized by polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. All these compounds are thermotropic liquid crystalline materials. All three-ring compounds (series A, B and C) and most four-ring compounds (series D, E and F) exhibit only a nematic phase, while some four-ring compounds with long terminal alkyl chains show nematic, smectic A and even smectic B phases. In addition, four compounds containing a 1,3-dioxane unit were prepared, and their mesomorphic properties compared with their 1,3,2-dioxaborinane analogues. The dielectric anisotropies of selected target compounds were determined; some showed a negative anisotropy. The relationships between the properties and chemical structures of these new compounds are discussed.  相似文献

To continue the search for novel series of ferroelectric liquid crystals, an additional two series of compounds, C S(+)-4-[(2-methylbutyl)phenyl]4'-trans-n-alkylcyclohexyl) benzoates and D S(+)-4-[(4-methylhexanoyl)phenyl]4'(4'-trans-n-alkylcyclohexyl) benzoates, where alkyl = C5-C6 are reported in this paper. Their mesomorphic properties have been characterized by optical textural observations and DSC. Some of these compounds show a C-S*C-SA-N*-I phase transition sequence. The effects of the alkyl chains on transition temperatures and optically active terminal groups on phase behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

A series of new polybenzoxazines were synthesized based on diphenols containing (substituted) cyclohexyl moiety and were characterized by FT‐IR, 1H‐NMR, and 13C‐NMR spectroscopy. These new benzoxazine monomers exhibited better processability with lower peak cure temperature and a wide cure controllable window (CCW) as manifested in differential scanning calorimetric analysis. The cure analysis was performed by FT‐IR spectroscopy. Glass transition temperature of new polybenzoxazines varied from 170 to 205°C. The cyclohexyl bridge groups facilitated ring opening, resulting in polymer with improved thermal stability in comparison to bisphenol A‐based benzoxazine as assessed by the various thermal analyses. The water contact angles of polybenzoxazines containing (substituted) cyclohexyl moieties were higher than that of bisphenol A‐based polybenzoxazine, implying their higher hydrophobicity. A series of symmetrical azine-type liquid crystals were synthesized. The characteristic of these liquid crystals is that they had high clearing point ( ~320 ℃) and broad thermal range of nematic phase ( ~154 ℃). Three novel bent-shaped monomers, namely 1,3-phenylene bis-{4-[4-(n-allyloxyalkyloxy)phenylazo]benzoate} 5a–c, containing azobenzene as side arms, resorcinol as central units and terminal double bonds as polymerisable functional groups were synthesised and characterised. The mesophase behaviour was investigated by polarising optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction measurements and it was found that all three compounds display SmAintercal mesophases. These bent-shaped molecules exhibit strong photoisomerisation behaviour in solutions in which trans to cis isomerisation takes about 50 seconds whereas the reverse process takes almost 31 hours.  相似文献

Two series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing a phenyl biphenyl carboxylate mesogenic group and oligomethylene spacers (n 3, 4, 6, 8) were synthesized and characterized. The chiral moieties are the (S)-2-methylbutoxycarbonyl and (S)-1-methylheptoxycarbonyl groups. The mesomorphic behaviours of the compounds were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry and optical polarized microscopy. Spontaneous polarization (P) of the liquid crystals was measured by an automated polarization tester over a wide temperature range. The mesomorphic properties are discussed as a function of spacer length and position of the chiral centre. It is found that the phase transition temperature decreases with increasing number of oligomethylene units. The phase behaviours of the LC with (S)-1-methylheptoxycarbonyl are more complex than those with (S)-2-methylbutoxycarbonyl, due to the flexible tail in the former. Moreover, the spontaneous polarization depends mainly on the position of the chiral centre, with Ps 15 nC cm 2 and Ps 60 123 nC cm 2 for the series s with (S)-2-methylbutoxycarbonyl and (S)-1-methylheptoxycarbonyl groups, respectively.  相似文献

Photopolymerizable three-ring phenylacetylene (3PA) liquid crystalline compounds were synthesized and the physical properties of the monomers and polymers were characterized in the expectation of obtaining high birefringence polymers. 3PA monomers containing acrylate substituents exhibited enantiotropic nematic phases and high δn values of around 0.35. Homogeneous alignment was retained after polymerization and high values of δn (~0.34) for the polymers were obtained. The orientation of the monomers at the photopolymerization temperature was almost fixed, such that δn and the order parameter of the polymers varied with the polymerization temperature.  相似文献

The design and synthesis of new calamitic benzothiazole-based liquid crystals,2-[4-(4-alkyloxybenzoyloxy)-phenyl]ben-zothiazoles are presented.The target compound was characterized using spectroscopic techniques,such as FT-IR,NMR(1H and 13C),microanalysis and EI-MS.The liquid crystalline behaviours of these compounds were thoroughly examined by differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing optical microscope techniques.These materials exhibited enantiotropic nematic phase with high thermal stability(>168℃).Smectic A phase starts to emerge as monotropic(metastable) phase from C10 member and changes into enantiotropic(stable) phase from C12 and persists up to C16 members.  相似文献

Four series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing oligooxyethylene spacers have been synthesized. These obtained liquid crystal compounds were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and optical polarized microscopy (POM). The properties of the liquid crystalline phase were investigated as a function of spacer units, numbers of core aromatic rings, and different terminal asymmetric moieties. It was found that (i) the phase transition temperature decreased with the increasing oligooxyethylene spacer unit, (ii) the liquid crystalline phases were enhanced in three phenyl ring system than in two phenyl ring system, and (iii) ferroelectric liquid crystals containing different terminal asymmetric moieties exhibited novel mesophase phenomena. A twist grain boundary phase (TGBA phase) was observed in some compounds of this study. Furthermore, a wide temperature chiral smectic Crange including room temperature was achieved.  相似文献

A series of optically active methacrylic homopolymers, poly[(4‐{4′‐[(S)‐2‐methyl‐1‐butyloxycarbonyl]phenylazo}phenoxyl)x‐methylene methacrylate] (x = 0, 2, 6, or 11), were synthesized. The structures of the polymers were characterized by IR, 1H NMR, UV, differential scanning calorimetry, and gel permeation chromatography. The chiroptical properties of the polymers in films were investigated with circular dichroism (CD) measurements. The CD and UV spectra of the films suggested that CD absorptions occurred in the films of the polymers with long spacers (x = 6 or 11) but not in the films of the polymers with short spacers (x = 0 or 2). After irradiation with linearly polarized light at 442 nm, the CD values were amplified in all the polymeric films. The amplificatory values of the CD bands in the absorption region (260–360 nm) of azobenzene chromophores suggested that the spacer length had an effect on both the transfer of chirality and photoinduced chirality in the polymeric films. Two series of calamitic liquid crystals containing a benzothiazole ring within the central core and two different linkage groups (amide and azo) have been prepared and their liquid crystalline properties studied and compared with those of the analogous series of imines. The influence of the linkage group within the central core has been proven to determine the variety of mesomorphism displayed by the compounds. The compounds with imine and azo linkages behave in a similar way and exhibit typical nematic and smectic C mesophases. Compounds incorporating an amide linkage show a poorer mesomorphism and mainly present a smectic C mesophase.  相似文献
