Large Eddy Simulations (LES) are conducted to study the actuated flow field around a bluff body. The model is a simplified section of a truck. The aim of the work is to model the separation of the flow acting at the front rounded corners, the so called A-pillars, and to minimize the separation of the flow by means of Zero Net Mass Flux synthetic jets. LES data show the interaction of the flow main structures, the separation mechanism and the effects of the actuation on the flow field. The flow is post processed using modal and frequency decompositions. Relevant results in terms of drag reduction were observed for the actuated flow. The principle flow mechanisms are discussed and an optimal actuation frequency, in terms of induced fluctuations and drag reduction, is identified.  相似文献

Flow control has shown a potential in reducing the drag in vehicle aerodynamics. The present numerical study deals with active flow control for a quasi-2D simplified vehicle model using a synthetic jet (zero net mass flux jet). Recently developed near-wall Partially-Averaged Navier–Stokes (PANS) method, based on the ζf RANS turbulence model, is used. The aim is to validate the performance of this new method for the complex flow control problem. Results are compared with previous studies using LES and experiments, including global flow parameters of Strouhal number, drag coefficients and velocity profiles. The PANS method predicts a drag reduction of approximately 15%, which is closer to the experimental data than the previous LES results. The velocity profiles predicted by the PANS method agree well with LES results and experimental data for both natural and controlled cases. The PANS prediction showed that the near-wake region is locked-on due to the synthetic jet, and the shear layer instabilities are thus depressed which resulted in an elongated wake region and reduced drag. It demonstrates that the PANS method is able to predict the flow control problem well and is thus appropriate for flow control studies.  相似文献

This study focuses on the flow modifications generated by a flat plate stabilizer placed downstream of a half-cylinder compared to the wake formation without the plate. For moderate Reynolds number, a snapshot proper-orthogonal-decomposition method based on particle-image-velocimetry (PIV) is used to analyze the complex dynamics of the flows and to highlight typical swirl formation mechanisms. Using this tool, the near-wake structures, the kinetic aspects, the energy contributions, the degree of organization of the structures and their temporal behaviour are identified. A strong link between the Strouhal number, the mean vorticity and the Total Energy is observed. The interference of the shear layer with the stabilizer has an atypical influence on the wake characteristics.  相似文献

A numerical study using improved delayed detached eddy simulation (IDDES) was used to investigate the influence of the embankment height on the aerodynamic performance of a high-speed train travelling under the influence of a crosswind. The results of the flow predictions were used to explore both the instantaneous and the time-averaged flows and the resulting aerodynamic forces, moments and slipstreams. An increase of the aerodynamic drag and side forces as well as the lift force of the head and middle cars were observed with rising embankment height. While the lift force of the tail car decreased with the increasing embankment height. Furthermore, the height of the embankment was found to have a strong influence on the slipstream on the leeward side of the train. The correlation between the embankment height and the slipstream velocity on the windward side, was rather small. The flow structures in the near-wake of the leeward side of the train, responsible for the aerodynamic properties of the train were analyzed, showing strong dependency on the embankment height.

The near-wake structure of a uniform flow past a circular cylinder undergoing a constant-amplitude transverse forced oscillation is studied numerically using a 2-D large eddy simulation (LES) calculation with a Reynolds number range from 500 to 8000. Two effects are considered: First, a comparison is made between the wake structures of periodic and nonperiodic forced oscillations of the cylinder. This was done to emphasize the importance of wake-structure differences of a periodic forced oscillation and a self-excited oscillation of a circular cylinder with the latter being characterized as a nonperiodic forced oscillation. The nonperiodic constant-amplitude forced oscillations were obtained by modulating the frequency of the periodically oscillating cylinder. The differences in the vortex-shedding behavior were made evident by analyzing the vorticity field in the entire wake domain. Second, the effect of changes in the moderate values of the Reynolds number for constant and variable frequency oscillation was investigated. Significant effects on the vortex-shedding patterns in the near wake were observed for both aspects of this study.  相似文献

A detailed numerical study using large‐eddy simulation (LES) and unsteady Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes (URANS) was undertaken to investigate physical processes that are engendered in the injection of a circular synthetic (zero‐net mass flux) jet in a zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer. A complementary study was carried out and was verified by comparisons with the available experimental data that were obtained at corresponding conditions with the aim of achieving an improved understanding of fluid dynamics of the studied processes. The computations were conducted by OpenFOAM C++, and the physical realism of the incoming turbulent boundary layer was secured by employing random field generation algorithm. The cavity was computed with a sinusoidal transpiration boundary condition on its floor. The results from URANS computation and LES were compared and described qualitatively and quantitatively. There is a particular interest for acquiring the turbulent structures from the present numerical data. The numerical methods can capture vortical structures including a hairpin (primary) vortex and secondary structures. However, the present computations confirmed that URANS and LES are capable of predicting current flow field with a more detailed structure presented by LES data as expected. The effect of the streamwise vortex generators on the near-wake flow structure of a circular cylinder was experimentally investigated. Digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) measurements were performed in a large circulating water tunnel facility at a Reynolds number of 41,300 where the flow around a bare cylinder was expected to be at the sub-critical flow state. In order to capture various flow properties and to provide a detailed wake flow topology, the DPIV images were analysed with three different but complementary flow field decomposition techniques which are Reynolds averaging, phase averaging and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). The effect of the vortex generators was clearly demonstrated both in qualitative and in quantitative manner. Various topological features such as vorticity and stress distribution of the flow fields as well as many other key flow characteristics including the length scales and the Strouhal number were discussed in the study. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the study presents the first DPIV visualization of the near-wake flow of a circular cylinder fitted with the vortex generators in the open literature.  相似文献

This paper presents an analysis of flow in the shell side of a 24-degree cut helical coil steam generator (HCSG) with large eddy simulation (LES). In the study, the open source, high-order spectral element CFD code Nek5000 was employed for numerical simulation. LES was performed at a Reynolds number of 9000 based on the inlet velocity and tube diameter. Spectral analysis was carried out along the tube bundle to investigate vortex shedding and to reveal shedding frequencies in HCSGs. Wavelet analysis was carried out to determine the time-frequency information of the fluctuating velocities in the domain. Flow was decomposed into modes with proper orthogonal decomposition, which revealed coherent structures in the flow and evolution of coherent structures in time. For the validation of Nek5000 in complex geometries, results from the numerical simulation were compared with experiments conducted at Texas A&M University. Overall, the LES results showed good agreement with experimental data.  相似文献

We analyze the error of large-eddy simulation(LES) in wall pressure fluctuation of a turbulent channel flow. To separate different sources of the error, we conduct both direct numerical simulations(DNS)and LES, and apply an explicit filter on DNS data to obtain filtered DNS(FDNS) data. The error of LES is consequently decomposed into two parts: The first part is the error of FDNS with respect to DNS,which quantifies the influence of the filter operation. The second part is the difference between LES and FDNS induced by the error of LES in velocity field. By comparing the root-mean-square value and the wavenumber-frequency spectrum of the wall pressure fluctuation, it is found that the inaccuracy of the velocity fluctuations is the dominant source that induces the error of LES in the wall pressure fluctuation. The present study provides a basis on future LES studies of the wall pressure fluctuation.  相似文献

Different flow models have been proposed for the flow around surface-mounted finite-height square prisms, but there is still a lack of consensus about the origin and connection of the streamwise tip vortices with the other elements of the wake. This numerical study was performed to address this gap, in addition to clarifying the relationship of the near-wake structures with the far wake and the near-wall flow, which is associated with the fluid forces. A large-eddy simulation approach was adopted to solve the flow around a surface-mounted finite-height square prism with an aspect ratio of AR = 3 and a Reynolds number Re = 500. The mean drag and normal forces and the bending moment for the prism were quantitatively compared in terms of skin-friction and pressure contributions, and related to the near-wall flow. Both three-dimensional visualizations and planar projections of the time-averaged flow field were used to identify, qualitatively, the main structures of the wake, including the horseshoe vortex, corner vortices and regions of high streamwise vorticity in the upper part of the wake. These features showed the same qualitative behavior as reported in high Reynolds number studies. It was found that some regions of high streamwise vorticity magnitude, like the tip vortices, are associated with the three-dimensional bending of the flow, and the tip vortices did not continuously extend to the free end of the prism. The three-dimensional flow analysis, which integrated different observations of the flow field around surface-mounted finite-height square prisms, also revealed that the mean near-wake structure is composed of two sections of different origin and location of dominance.  相似文献

Wind turbines operate in the surface layer of the atmospheric boundary layer, where they are subjected to strong wind shear and relatively high turbulence levels. These incoming boundary layer flow characteristics are expected to affect the structure of wind turbine wakes. The near-wake region is characterized by a complex coupled vortex system (including helicoidal tip vortices), unsteadiness and strong turbulence heterogeneity. Limited information about the spatial distribution of turbulence in the near wake, the vortex behavior and their influence on the downwind development of the far wake hinders our capability to predict wind turbine power production and fatigue loads in wind farms. This calls for a better understanding of the spatial distribution of the 3D flow and coherent turbulence structures in the near wake. Systematic wind-tunnel experiments were designed and carried out to characterize the structure of the near-wake flow downwind of a model wind turbine placed in a neutral boundary layer flow. A horizontal-axis, three-blade wind turbine model, with a rotor diameter of 13 cm and the hub height at 10.5 cm, occupied the lowest one-third of the boundary layer. High-resolution particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to measure velocities in multiple vertical stream-wise planes (xz) and vertical span-wise planes (yz). In particular, we identified localized regions of strong vorticity and swirling strength, which are the signature of helicoidal tip vortices. These vortices are most pronounced at the top-tip level and persist up to a distance of two to three rotor diameters downwind. The measurements also reveal strong flow rotation and a highly non-axisymmetric distribution of the mean flow and turbulence structure in the near wake. The results provide new insight into the physical mechanisms that govern the development of the near wake of a wind turbine immersed in a neutral boundary layer. They also serve as important data for the development and validation of numerical models.  相似文献

Large-eddy simulation (LES) of transitional separating-reattaching flow on a two-dimensional square surface mounted obstacle and a forward facing step has been performed using a dynamic sub-grid scale model. The Reynolds number based on the uniform inlet velocity and the obstacle/step height is 4.5 × 103. The mean LES results for both the obstacle and step flow compare reasonably well with the available experimental and DNS data.

The flow structures upstream of the surface-mounted obstacle (referred to hereafter as obstacle) and the forward-facing step (referred to hereafter as FFS) consist of unstable two-dimensional structures and coherent rib-shaped structures. These structures with the aid of 3D streamline visualisation strongly indicate that the upstream separation bubble is a closed one rather than an open one in the sense that there is little evidence to suggest that there is fluid injection from the upstream separation region into the downstream separated region for the two geometries. The spectra and time history for the velocities and pressure fields at locations immediately upstream of the obstacle and FFS (including the recirculation region) were analysed using both the Fourier and wavelet transforms and revealed the unsteady nature of the recirculation region upstream of the obstacle and FFS.

The transition process has been elucidated using both 2D and 3D flow visualisation of the flow. In both geometries (obstacle and FFS), the separated boundary layer downstream of the leading edge shows 2D nature and roll-up shortly downstream of the separation line leading to 2D K-H rolls to be shed from the leading edge. Coherent structures such as the λ-shaped and rib-like vortices commonly associated with a flat plate boundary layer and also found in the separated-reattached flow of a blunt leading edge plate aligned horizontally to a flow are not common in the separated-reattached flow over the obstacle and FFS.  相似文献

Thermally stratified shear turbulent channel flow with temperature oscillation on the bottom wall of the channel is calculated to investigate the behavior of turbulent flow and heat transfer by use of large eddy simulation (LES) approach coupled with dynamic subgrid-scale (SGS) models. The objective of this study is to deal with the effect of the temperature oscillation on turbulent behavior of thermally stratified turbulent channel flow and to examine the effectiveness of the LES technique for predicting statistically unsteady turbulent flow driven by time-varying buoyancy force. To validate the present calculation, thermally stratified shear turbulent channel flow is computed and compared with available data obtained by direct numerical simulation (DNS), which confirm that the present approach can be used to predict thermally stratified turbulent channel flow satisfactorily. Further, to illustrate the effect of the temperature oscillation with different Richardson numbers and periods of the oscillation on turbulence characteristics, the phase-averaged mean value and fluctuation of the resolved velocities and temperature, and instantaneous velocity fluctuation structures are analyzed.  相似文献

PIV measurements of the near-wake behind a sinusoidal cylinder   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The three-dimensional near-wake structures behind a sinusoidal cylinder have been investigated using a particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurement technique at Re=3,000. The mean velocity fields and spatial distributions of ensemble-averaged turbulence statistics for flows around the sinusoidal and corresponding smooth cylinders were compared. The near-wake behind the sinusoidal cylinder exhibited pronounced spanwise periodic variations in the flow structure. Well-organized streamwise vortices with alternating positive and negative vorticity were observed along the span of the sinusoidal cylinder. They suppress the formation of the large-scale spanwise vortices and decrease the overall turbulent kinetic energy in the near-wake of the sinusoidal cylinder. The sinusoidal surface geometry significantly modifies the near-wake structure and strongly controls the three-dimensional vortices formed in the near-wake.  相似文献

The turbulent flows around four cylinders in an in-line square configuration with different spacing ratios of 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 5.0 have been investigated experimentally at subcritical Reynolds numbers from 11,000 to 20,000. The mean and fluctuating velocity distributions were obtained using the laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) measurement. The digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) was employed to characterize the full field vorticity and velocity distributions as well as other turbulent quantities. The experimental study indicated that several distinct flow patterns exist depending on the spacing ratio and subcritical Reynolds number for turbulent flow. The three-dimensional numerical simulations were also carried out using the large eddy simulation (LES) at Reynolds number of 15,000 with the spacing ratio of 1.5 and 3.5. The results show that the LES numerical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental measurements. Therefore, the three-dimensional vortex structures and the full field instantaneous and mean quantities of the flow field such as velocity field, vorticity field, etc., which are very difficult to obtain experimentally, can be extracted from the simulation results for the deepening of our understanding on the complex flow phenomena around four cylinders in in-line configuration.  相似文献

A hybrid method combining large eddy simulation (LES) with the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation is used to simulate a turbulent channel flow at high Reynolds number. It is known that the mean velocity profile has a mismatch between the RANS and LES regions in hybrid simulations of a channel flow. The velocity mismatch is reproduced and its dependence on the location of the RANS/LES interface and on the type of RANS model is examined in order to better understand its properties. To remove the mismatch and to obtain better velocity profiles, additional filtering is applied to the velocity components in the wall-parallel planes near the interface. The additional filtering was previously introduced to simulate a channel flow at low Reynolds number. It is shown that the filtering is effective in reducing the mismatch even at high Reynolds number. Profiles of the velocity fluctuations of runs with and without the additional filtering are examined to help understand the reason for the mismatch. Due to the additional filtering, the wall-normal velocity fluctuation increases at the bottom of the LES region. The resulting velocity field creates the grid-scale shear stress more efficiently, and an overestimate of the velocity gradient is removed. The dependence of the velocity profile on the grid point number is also investigated. It is found that the velocity gradient in the core region is underestimated in the case of a coarse grid. Attention should be paid not only to the velocity mismatch near the interface but also to the velocity profile in the core region in hybrid simulations of a channel flow at high Reynolds number. This paper presents Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of flow around a four-vehicle platoon when one of the platoon members was forced to undergo in-line oscillations. The LES were made at the Reynolds number of 105 based on the height of the vehicles. Combinations of two different frequencies corresponding to non-dimensional frequencies at the Strouhal numbers St1 = 0.025 and St2 = 0.013 and two oscillation amplitudes were used in this study. The methodology was validated by comparisons with data from previous experimental investigations. In order to highlight the dynamic effects, comparisons were made with steady results on a single vehicle and on a four-vehicle platoon. Large differences were found in the flow structures between quasi-steady and dynamic results. Furthermore, the behavior of the drag coefficient of the upstream neighbor of the oscillating model was investigated.  相似文献

A numerical investigation of flow around a sphere is performed and compared with previous studies. Here, a second-order accurate, finite volume method is used in order to predict the instantaneous and time-averaged flow characteristics using large eddy simulation (LES) on the multi-block grid system. Namely, the objectives of this article are: (i) the presentation of flow structures in the wake region downstream of the sphere with a wide variety of flow properties such as the distribution of velocity vectors, patterns of streamlines, Reynolds stress correlations, root mean square of velocity components and other time-averaged flow data in order to reveal the vortical flow structures in detail and (ii) to demonstrate the abilities of computational methods in simulation of vortical flow data. Finally, it has been concluded that there are good agreements between the experimental results and numerical predictions.  相似文献

A combined experimental and numerical investigation of flow control actuation in a short, rectangular, diffusing S-shape inlet duct using a two-dimensional tangential control jet was conducted. Experimental and numerical techniques were used in conjunction as complementary techniques, which are utilized to better understand the complex flow field. The compact inlet had a length-to-hydraulic diameter ratio of 1.5 and was investigated at a free-stream Mach number of 0.44. In contrast to the baseline flow, where the flow field was fully separated, the two-dimensional control jet was able to eliminate flow separation at the mid-span portion of the duct and changed considerably the three-dimensional flow field, and ultimately, the inlet performance. A comparison between the baseline (no actuation) and forced flow fields showed that secondary flow structures dominated both flow fields, which is inevitably associated with total pressure loss. Contrary to the baseline case, the secondary flow structures in the forced case were established from the core flow stagnating on the lower surface of the duct close to the aerodynamic interface plane. High fidelity spectral analysis of the experimental results at the inlet’s exit plane showed that the baseline flow field was dominated by pressure fluctuations corresponding to a Strouhal number based on hydraulic diameter of 0.26. Not only did the two-dimensional tangential control jet improve the time-averaged pressure recovery at the inlet exit plane (13.3% at the lower half of the aerodynamic interface plane), it essentially eliminated the energy content of the distinct unsteady fluctuations which characterized the baseline flow field. This result has several implications for the design of a realistic engine inlet; furthermore, it depicts that a single non-intrusive static pressure measurement at the surface of the duct can detect flow separation.  相似文献
