We study the flow of a liquid down an inclined channel with a sinusoidal bottom profile. We show how wavy bottom variations, which are long compared with the film thickness or the amplitude, modify the flow with respect to that down a flat inclined channel. We consider different perturbation analyses. Their results are compared with experimental data on the velocity profiles and on the film thickness. We discuss the effect of waviness, inclination angle, film thickness, and Reynolds number.  相似文献

This paper examines the viability of modifying bridge cable shape and surface for the purpose of controlling wind-induced vibrations. To this end, an extensive wind-tunnel test campaign was carried out on various cable shapes about the critical Reynolds number region. Cable shapes were chosen to passively modify the flow in a particular manner. Tested shapes included those which have some form of waviness, faceting and shrouding. Section models were tested using a static inclined rig, allowing them to be installed at yawed cable-wind angles for both smooth and turbulent flow conditions. The aerodynamic damping of the tested cylinders is evaluated by applying both 1- and 2-dof quasi-steady aerodynamic instability models. This allows for the prediction of regions of aerodynamic instability, as a function of flow angle and Reynolds number. Whilst the plain, wavy and faceted cylinders are predicted to suffer from either dry inclined galloping, “drag crisis” or Den Hartog galloping, the shrouded cylinder is found to be stable for all angles of attack, albeit with an increase in drag at typical design wind velocities. Finally, turbulent flow is found to introduce an increased amount of aerodynamic damping mainly by providing a more constant lift force over tested Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

Viscous liquid film flow along an inclined corrugated (sinusoidal) surface has been studied. Calculations were performed using an integral model. The stability of nonlinear steady-state flows to arbitrary perturbations was examined using the Floquet theory. It has been shown that for each type of corrugation there is a critical Reynolds number for which unstable perturbations occur. It has been found that this value greatly depends on the physical properties of the liquid and geometric parameters of the flow. In particular, in the case of film flow down a smooth wall, the critical waveformation parameter depends only on the angle of inclination of the flow surface. The values of the corrugation parameters (amplitude and period) were obtained for which the film flow down a wavy wall is stable to arbitrary perturbations up to moderate Reynolds numbers. Such parameter values exist for all investigated angles of inclination of the flow surface.  相似文献

Long waves on a viscoelastic film flow down a wavy inclined plane is investigated. The analysis is performed to see how long non-linear waves on viscoelastic film down an uneven inclined wall are deformed due to the non-uniformity of the basic flow. The results are then compared with those corresponding to Newtonian film down a wavy inclined wall as well as viscoelastic film down a plane inclined wall.  相似文献

In this study, two dimensional heat/mass transfer characteristics and flow features were investigated in a rectangular wavy duct with various corrugation angles. The test duct had a width of 7.3 mm and a large aspect ratio of 7.3 to simulate two dimensional characteristics. The corrugation angles used were 100°, 115°, 130°, and 145°. Numerical analysis using the commercial code FLUENT, was used to analyze the flow features. In addition, the oil-lamp black method was used for flow visualization. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients on the corrugated walls were measured using a naphthalene sublimation technique. The Reynolds number, based on the duct hydraulic diameter, was varied from 700 to 5,000. The experimental results and numerical analysis showed interesting and detailed features in the wavy duct. Main flow impinged on upstream of a pressure wall, and the flow greatly enhanced heat/mass transfer. On a suction wall, however, flow separation and reattachment dominantly affected the heat/mass transfer characteristics on the wall. As the corrugation angle decreased (it means the duct has more sharp turn), the region of flow stagnation at the front part of the pressure wall became wider. Also, the position of flow reattachment on the suction wall moved upstream as the corrugation angle decreased. A high heat transfer rate appeared at the front part of the pressure wall due to main-flow impingement, and at the front part of the suction wall due to flow reattachment. The high heat/mass transfer region by the main-flow impingement and the circulation flow induced at a valley between the pressure and suction walls changed with the corrugation angle and the Reynolds number. As the corrugation angle decreased, the flow in the wavy duct changed to transition to turbulent flow earlier.  相似文献

It has been shown that when a plane shock wave is reflected off a surface consisting of a 75-mm radius circular arc followed by a plane section inclined at 45°, it takes some time for the interaction to reach a pseudosteady reflection configuration. The current study extends this work at a constant Mach number of 1.346, with three compound walls, consisting of leading circular sections of 30, 50 and 75 mm radius, joined to a plane wall section. Testing was done at various wall angles for each of the test pieces. The reflected wave angle was measured and was found to increase along the plane wall section until it reached an asymptotic value, at which time pseudosteady flow was established. The asymptotic values are consistent with reflection off plane wedges and are independent of the leading radius. For lower wall angles which lead to Mach reflection the length required to reach pseudosteady flow increases as the wall angle increases to the pseudosteady transition angle. The reverse occurs when the final pseudosteady reflection is regular, in that as the wall angle increases the distance travelled to reach pseudosteady flow conditions decreases. Additional tests were conducted on a specimen consisting of a plane section at 60° wall angle with 30-mm radius circular arc sections at either end. It is demonstrated how the information from the two slope changes influences the shape of the reflected shock. The trajectories of two perturbations on the reflected shock arising from the joints between the circular sections and the plane wall show that the reflected wave remains linear between these two points, as it received no knowledge from either circular section until the perturbations from the upper and lower joints cross.  相似文献

The objective of this application study was to investigate the effect of surface non-flatness on the lubrication characteristic of the bearing/sealing part between cylinder barrel and valve plate in a hydrostatic axial piston pump. A developed numerical algorithm facilitated the simultaneous calculation of time-varying cylinder pressure, rotating body motion, and fluid film pressure to observe fluid film geometry and power loss. It was shown that an ideally flat surface might not form full fluid lubrication film properly, and that small-scale machining error, surface waviness, may increase the film thickness to some degree. The shape model of surface waviness considered waviness unit shape as well as its surface lay. However the results demonstrated that surface non-flatness of such small scale did not form the desirable fluid film geometry which minimized the power loss yet. Providing some surface design tips, two particular curved surfaces whose pressure-generating mechanisms differ were selected and analyzed in variation with their shapes and operating conditions. This study asserted that a circumferentially wavy surface would make better performance of motion stability and power efficiency than a radially wedged land surface, and finally that the non-flatness design strategy should be applied with re-considering the clamping ability.  相似文献

The flow characteristics around an inclined elliptic cylinder located near a flat plate were investigated experimentally. The axis ratio of the elliptic cylinder was AR=2. The pressure distributions along the surface of the cylinder and the flat plate were measured by varying the angle of attack of the elliptic cylinder. The velocity profiles behind the cylinder were measured using hot-wire anemometry. When the angle of attack varies, the peak pressure location on the windward cylinder surface moves towards the rear edge of the cylinder, while that on the leeward surface moves towards the front edge of the cylinder. The vortex-shedding frequency also gradually decreases, defining a critical angle of attack for each gap ratio. The location of the minimum pressure on the flat plate surface moves downstream for positive angles of attack, while it moves upstream for negative angles of attack. Negative angles of attack cause a greater disturbance in the boundary layer near the wall compared to positive angles of attack. This shows that the separated wall shear layer from the boundary layer and the lower shear layer of the cylinder wake are strongly merged compared to other cases.  相似文献

A numerical study is presented for the laminar fully developed flow and heat transfer in a two-dimensional wavy channel. The effects of the geometry, Reynolds and Prandtl number on the flow field and heat transfer are investigated. The channel is characterized by a wavy wall, heated at uniform heat flux, and an opposite wall, being plane and adiabatic. The extent of the wall waviness and the distance between the channel walls are found to significantly affect the streamlines contours as well as the heat transfer coefficients. Comparisons with the straight channel, in the same flow rate and heat transfer conditions, have been performed. Pressure drop of the wavy channel is found to be always larger than the value characteristic of a straight channel, while heat transfer performance decreases or increases depending on the values of the parameters (geometry, Reynolds and Prandtl numbers).  相似文献

The Darcy flow model with the Boussinesq approximation is used to investigate numerically the natural convection inside an inclined wavy cavity filled with a porous medium. Finite Element Method is used to discretize the governing differential equations with non-staggered variable arrangement. Results are presented for and , where ϕ, Ra, A and λ correspond to the cavity inclination angle, Rayleigh number, aspect ratio and surface waviness parameter, respectively. Stream and isotherm lines representing the corresponding flow and thermal fields, and local and average Nusselt numbers distribution expressing the rate of heat transfer are determined and shown on graphs and tables. A good agreement is observed between the present results and those known from the open literature. The flow and thermal structures found to be highly dependent on surface waviness for inclination angles less than 45°, especially for high Rayleigh numbers.  相似文献

PIV technique is applied for measurements of instant velocity distributions in a liquid film flowing down an inclined tube in the form of a wavy rivulet. An application of special optical calibration is applied to correct distortion effects caused by the curvature of the interface. A vortex flow of liquid is observed inside a wave hump in the reference system moving with wave phase velocity. Conditionally averaged profiles of longitudinal and transverse components of liquid velocity are obtained for different cross-sections of developed non-linear waves. It is shown that the increase in wave amplitude slightly changes the location of the vortex center. The analysis of modification of vortex motion character due to wavy flow conditions, such as tube inclination angle, film Reynolds number, wave excitation frequency, is fulfilled.  相似文献

One of the most important tasks in development of modern gas turbine combustors is the reduction of NOx emissions. An effective way to reduce the NOx emission is using the lean premixed prevaporization (LPP) concept. An important phenomenon taking place in LPP chambers is the evaporation of thin fuel films. To increase the fuel evaporation rate, the use of microstructured walls has been suggested. The wall microstructures make use of the capillary forces to evenly distribute the liquid fuel over the wall, so that the appearance of uncontrolled dry patches can be avoided. Moreover, the wall structures promote the thin film evaporation characterized by ultra-high evaporation rates. An experimental setup was built for the investigation of thin liquid films falling down on the outer surface of vertical tubes with either a smooth or structured surface. In the first testing phase water is used, fuel like liquids will be used later on. The thin film can be heated from both sides, by hot oil flowing inside the tube, and by hot compressed air flowing in co-current direction to the thin film. The film is partly evaporated along the flow. Results for the wavy film structure at different Reynolds numbers are reported. For theoretical investigations a model describing the hydrodynamics and heat transfer due to evaporation of the gravity- and shear-driven undisturbed liquid film on structured surfaces was developed. For low Reynolds numbers or low liquid mass fluxes the wall surface is only partly covered with liquid and the heat transfer is shown to be governed by the evaporation of the ultra-thin film in the vicinity of the three-phase contact line. A numerical model for the solution of a two-dimensional free-surface flow of a liquid film over a structured wall was also developed. The Navier–Stokes equations are solved using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) technique. The energy equation is included in the model. The model is verified by comparison with data from the literature showing favorable agreement. In particular, the proposed model predicts the formation of capillary waves observed in the experiments. The model is used to investigate the flow of liquid on a structured wall. This calculation is the first step towards the modeling of a three-dimensional wavy flow of a gravity- and shear-driven film along a wall with longitudinal grooves. It is found that due to the Marangoni effect, a circulating flow arises within the cavity, thereby leading to an enhancement in the evaporation rate.  相似文献

A large eddy simulation (LES) study was conducted to investigate the three-dimensional characteristics of the turbulent flow past wavy cylinders with yaw angles from 0° to 60° at a subcritical Reynolds number of 3900. The relationships between force coefficients and vortex shedding frequency with yaw angles for both wavy cylinders and circular cylinders were investigated. Experimental measurements were also performed for the validation of the present LES results. Comparing with corresponding yawed circular cylinders at similar Reynolds number, significant differences in wake vortex patterns between wavy cylinder and circular cylinder were observed at small yaw angles. The difference in wake pattern becomes insignificant at large yaw angles. The mean drag coefficient and the Strouhal number obey the independence principle for circular cylinders at yaw angle less than 45°, while the independence principle was found to be unsuitable for yawed wavy cylinders. In general, the mean drag coefficients and the fluctuating lift coefficients of a yawed wavy cylinder are less than those of a corresponding yawed circular cylinder at the same flow condition. However, with the increase of the yaw angle, the advantageous effect of wavy cylinder on force and vibration control becomes insignificant.  相似文献

The present paper deals with the ice-formation in a planar nozzle with various convergence angles. Experiments have been carried out for different wall cooling parameters B in the range between 4 and 25 and for different flow rate Reynolds numbers in the range of 5,000 < Re 4h  < 50,000 for two different convergence angles of the nozzle. For all experiments with the larger convergence angle of the nozzle (2.5°), only smooth ice-layers could be observed. However, for the nozzle with the smaller convergence angle (1.25°), also wavy ice-layers could be detected. This interesting result is a justification for the hypothesis that the formation of wavy ice-layers is caused by flow laminarisation (due to the rapid growth in ice-layer thickness with increasing axial position from the inlet) and retransition to the fully turbulent state (after the acceleration falls below a certain critical value). Thus, this paper proves for the first time, that wavy ice-layers are suppressed by superimposed strong flow acceleration.  相似文献

We consider the combined effect of the magnetic field and heat transfer inside a square cavity containing a hybrid nanofluid(Cu-Al_2O_3-water). The upper and bottom walls of the cavity have a wavy shape. The temperature of the vertical walls is lower, the third part in the middle of the bottom wall is kept at a constant higher temperature, and the remaining parts of the bottom wall and the upper wall are thermally insulated. The magnetic field is applied under the angle γ, an opposite clockwise direction. For the numerical simulation, the finite element technique is employed. The ranges of the characteristics are as follows: the Rayleigh number(10~3≤Ra≤10~5), the Hartmann number(0≤Ha≤100), the nanoparticle hybrid concentration(?_(Al_2O_3),?_(Cu) = 0, 0.025, 0.05),the magnetic field orientation(0≤γ≤2π), and the Prandtl number P_r, the amplitude of wavy cavity A, and the number of waviness n are fixed at P_r = 7, A = 0.1, and n = 3, respectively. The comparison with a reported finding in the open literature is done, and the data are observed to be in very good agreement. The effects of the governing parameters on the energy transport and fluid flow parameters are studied. The results prove that the increment of the magnetic influence determines the decrease of the energy transference because the conduction motion dominates the fluid movement. When the Rayleigh number is raised, the Nusselt number is increased, too. For moderate Rayleigh numbers, the maximum ratio of the heat transfer takes place for the hybrid nanofluid and then the Cu-nanofluid, followed by the Al_2O_3-nanofluid. The nature of motion and energy transport parameters has been scrutinized.

Characteristics of thin water film flow down an inclined plane surface without as well as with superposed countercurrent air flow were studied experimentally. Three different angles of inclination of the channel with horizontal were investigated. At each inclination angle, five film Reynolds numbers were studied. Experiments were performed beginning at zero air flow and then increasing the air flow rate in steps until water entrainment occurred. Visual observation of the film surface was carried out as were film thickness measurements by means of capacitance probes. Results presented include mean film thickness and distribution, frequency spectra and propagation velocities of interfacial disturbances, and the incipience condition for entrainment of water from the film into the air stream.  相似文献

Natural convection in an inclined enclosure from below and containing internally heated fluid has been investigated using a finite difference calculation procedure. Results have been obtained for Rayleigh number values up to 106 and for inclination angles of 30 and 60°. For internal Rayleigh numbers that are much larger than the external Rayleigh number, the flow rises in the interior and moves down both the hot and cold walls. On the other hand, if the external Rayleigh number has a larger magnitude, the flow moves upwards along the hot surface and downwards along the cold surface. For the latter situation, the inner core is multicellular in nature at large external Rayleigh numbers. The average heat flux ratio along the cold surface (convective heat flux/corresponding conduction heat flux) increases with increasing external Rayleigh number and decreasing internal ratio is non-monotonic in nature. The heat flux ratio along both surfaces is observed to be strongly dependent on the inclination angle at high external Rayleigh numbers. A maximum in the local heat flux along the cold surface is obtained in the vicinity of x/L = 1 where hot fluid, either from the interior or directly from the opposite hot wall, meets the surface. Along the hot wall, a maximum in the heat flux ra flo  相似文献

The effects of wall corrugation on the stability of wall-bounded shear flows have been examined experimentally in plane channel flows. One of the channel walls has been modified by introduction of the wavy wall model with the amplitude of 4% of the channel half height and the wave number of 1.02. The experiment is focused on the two-dimensional travelling wave instability and the results are compared with the theory [J.M. Floryan, Two-dimensional instability of flow in a rough channel, Phys. Fluids 17 (2005) 044101 (also: Rept. ESFD-1/2003, Dept. of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, The University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada, 2003)]. It is shown that the flow is destabilized by the wall corrugation at subcritical Reynolds numbers below 5772, as predicted by the theory. For the present corrugation geometry, the critical Reynolds number is decreased down to about 4000. The spatial growth rates, the disturbance wave numbers and the distribution of disturbance amplitude measured over such wavy wall also agree well with the theoretical results.  相似文献
