We prove an inequality between the relative homological dimension of a Kleinian group and its critical exponent. As an application of this result we show that for a geometrically finite Kleinian group Γ, if the topological dimension of the limit set of Γ equals its Hausdorff dimension, then the limit set is a round sphere. Let X be a proper hyperbolic geodesic metric space and let G be a closed subgroup of the isometry group Iso(X) of X. We show that if G is not elementary then for every p ∈ (1, ∞) the second continuous bounded cohomology group H2cb(G, Lp(G)) does not vanish. This paper answers a question raised by Vladimir Pestov. Let G be a non-trivial group of isometries of a complete, separable metric space. Let Ĝ be the semi-group arising from its completion with respect to the left uniformity. Let F n be the free group on n ≥ 2 elements and Aut(F n ) its group of automorphisms. In this paper we present a rich collection of linear representations of Aut(F n ) arising through the action of finite-index subgroups of it on relation modules of finite quotient groups of F n . In this paper we determine all collapsing transformation monoids that contain at least one unary constant operation and whose nonconstant operations are permutations. Furthermore, we find an infinite family of transformation monoids that consist of at least three unary constant operations and some permutations for which the corresponding monoidal intervals are 2-element chains. We introduce two new types of Dehn functions of group presentations which seem more suitable (than the standard Dehn function) for infinite group presentations and prove the fundamental equivalence between the solvability of the word problem for a group presentation defined by a decidable set of defining words and the property of being computable for one of the newly introduced functions (this equivalence fails for the standard Dehn function). Elaborating on this equivalence and making use of this function, we obtain a characterization of finitely generated groups for which the word problem can be solved in nondeterministic polynomial time. We also give upper bounds for these functions, as well as for the standard Dehn function, for two well-known periodic groups. In particular, we prove that the (standard) Dehn function of a 2-group Γ of intermediate growth, defined by a system of defining relators due to Lysenok, is bounded from above by C1x2 log2 x, where C1 > 1 is a constant. We also show that the (standard) Dehn function of a free m-generator Burnside group B(m, n) of exponent n ≥ 248, where n is either odd or divisible by 29, defined by a minimal system of defining relators, is bounded from above by the subquadratic function x19/12. We study the operad of finite labeled tournaments. We describe the structure of suboperads of this operad generated by simple tournaments. We prove that a suboperad generated by a tournament with two vertices (i.e., the operad of finite linearly ordered sets) is isomorphic to the operad of symmetric groups, and a suboperad generated by a simple tournament with more that two vertices is isomorphic to the quotient operad of the free operad with respect to a certain congruence. Let a discrete group G act by homeomorphisms of a compactum in a way that the action is properly discontinuous on triples and cocompact on pairs. We prove that such an action is geometrically finite. The converse statement was proved by P. Tukia [T3]. So, we have another topological characterisation of geometrically finite convergence groups and, by the result of A. Yaman [Y2], of relatively hyperbolic groups. Further, if G is finitely generated then the parabolic subgroups are finitely generated and undistorted. This answer to a question of B. We discuss a topological approach to words introduced by the author in [Tu2]–[Tu4]. Words on an arbitrary alphabet are approximated by Gauss words and then studied up to natural modifications inspired by the Reidemeister moves on knot diagrams. This leads us to a notion of homotopy for words. We introduce several homotopy invariants of words and give a homotopy classification of words of length five. The main result of this paper is an exponential sum bound in prime fields for multilinear expressions of the type under nearly optimal conditions on . It provides the expected generalization of the well-known inequality for r = 2. We also establish a new result on Gauss sums for multiplicative subgroups H of , obtaining a nontrivial estimate provided . This is a further improvement on [BGK]. is also valid, where (d k ) is a logarithmic weight sequence and D N = ∑ k=1 N d k . In this paper we extend the last result for a very large class of weight sequences (d k ), leading to considerably sharper results. We show that logarithmic weights, used traditionally in a.s. central limit theory, are far from optimal and the theory remains valid with averaging procedures much closer to, in some cases even identical with, ordinary averages.   相似文献

Let M be a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold admitting a homotopy equivalence to a compact surface ∑, such that the cusps of M are in bijective correspondence with the boundary components of ∑. Suppose we realise a tight geodesic in the curve complex as a sequence of closed geodesics M. There is an upper bound on the lengths of such curves in terms of the lengths of the terminal curves and the topologicial type of ∑. We give proofs of these and related bounds. Similar bounds have been proven by Minsky using the sophisticated machinery of hierarchies. Such bounds feature in the work of Brock, Canary and Minsky towards the ending lamination conjecture, and can also be used to study the action of the mapping class group on the curve complex. We study solutions to the free stochastic differential equation , where V is a locally convex polynomial potential in m non-commuting variables and S an m-dimensional free Brownian motion. We prove that such free processes have a unique stationary distribution μV. When the potential V is self-adjoint, we show that the law μV is the limit law of a random matrix model, in which an m-tuple of self-adjoint matrices are chosen according to the law exp. If V = Vβ depends on complex parameters , we prove that the moments of the law μV are analytic in β at least for those β for which Vβ is locally convex. In particular, this gives information on the region of convergence of the generating function for the enumeration of related planar maps. We prove that the solution Xt has nice convergence properties with respect to the operator norm as t goes to infinity. This allows us to show that the C* and W* algebras generated by an m-tuple with law μV share many properties with those generated by a semi-circular system. Among them is the lack of projections, exactness, the Haagerup property, and embeddability into the ultrapower of the hyperfinite II1 factor. We show that the microstates free entropy χ(μV ) is finite when V is self-adjoint. A corollary of these results is the fact that the support of the law of any self-adjoint polynomial in under the law μV is connected, vastly generalizing the case of a single random matrix. We also deduce from this dynamical approach that the convergence of the operator norms of independent matrices from the GUE proved by Haagerup and Thorbjornsen [HT] extends to the context of matrices interacting via a convex potential.
