We establish a homeomorphism between the moduli space of ordered -tuples of 2-dimensional linear subspaces (mod ) and the quotient by simultaneous conjugation of a certain open subset . A remark on the semi-classical measure from with a degenerate potential

This note is motivated by Evans (2004) and Anantharaman (2004). We study the semiclassical measure arising from the operator when the potential has degenerate minimum points. We will use the technique of integration by parts and some identities of Evans to derive information on the support of the measure.

Pseudocompact spaces and -spaces

Let be a completely regular Hausdorff space, and let be the space of continuous real-valued functions on endowed with the compact-open topology. We find various equivalent conditions for to be a -space, resolving an old question of Jarchow and consolidating work by Jarchow, Mazon, McCoy and Todd. Included are analytic characterizations of pseudocompactness and an example that shows that, for , Grothendieck's -spaces do not coincide with Jarchow's -spaces. Any such example necessarily answers a thirty-year-old question on weak barrelledness properties for , our original motivation.

     

A prediction problem in

Extensions of endomorphisms of

For a compact space we consider extending endomorphisms of the algebra to be endomorphisms of Arens-Hoffman and Cole extensions of . Given a non-linear, monic polynomial , with semi-simple, we show that if an endomorphism of extends to the Arens-Hoffman extension with respect to , then it also extends to the simple Cole extension with respect to . We show that the converse to this is false. For a locally connected, metric we characterize the algebraically closed in terms of the extendability of endomorphisms to Arens-Hoffman and to simple Cole extensions.

     

Lightface -indescribable cardinals

-absoluteness for forcing means that for any forcing , . `` inaccessible to reals' means that for any real , . To measure the exact consistency strength of `` -absoluteness for forcing and is inaccessible to reals', we introduce a weak version of a weakly compact cardinal, namely, a (lightface) -indescribable cardinal; has this property exactly if it is inaccessible and .

     

Stabilization of Tsirelson-type norms on spaces

We consider classical Tsirelson-type norms of and their modified versions on spaces, . We show that the modified Tsirelson-type norms do not distort any of the subspaces of the spaces. We prove that Tsirelson-type norms, being equivalent to their modified versions, may at most 2-distort spaces.

     

On frames for countably generated Hilbert -modules

Let be a countably generated Hilbert -module over a -algebra We prove that a sequence is a standard frame for if and only if the sum converges in norm for every and if there are constants such that for every We also prove that surjective adjointable operators preserve standard frames. A class of frames for countably generated Hilbert -modules over the -algebra of all compact operators on some Hilbert space is discussed.

     

Generalizations of Cayley's -process

In this paper we axiomatize some constructions and results due to Cayley and Hilbert. We define the concept of -process for an arbitrary affine algebraic monoid with zero and unit group . In our situation we show how to produce from the process and for a linear rational representation of a number of elements of the ring of -invariants that is large enough to guarantee its finite generation. Moreover, using complete reducibility, we give an explicit construction of all -processes for reductive monoids.

     

On maximal operators on -spheres in

A. Magyar's result on -bounds for a family of operators on -spheres () in is improved to match the corresponding theorem for -spheres.

Square -lattice paths and

The combinatorial -Catalan numbers are weighted sums of Dyck paths introduced by J. Haglund and studied extensively by Haglund, Haiman, Garsia, Loehr, and others. The -Catalan numbers, besides having many subtle combinatorial properties, are intimately connected to symmetric functions, algebraic geometry, and Macdonald polynomials. In particular, the 'th -Catalan number is the Hilbert series for the module of diagonal harmonic alternants in variables; it is also the coefficient of in the Schur expansion of . Using -analogues of labelled Dyck paths, Haglund et al. have proposed combinatorial conjectures for the monomial expansion of and the Hilbert series of the diagonal harmonics modules.

This article extends the combinatorial constructions of Haglund et al. to the case of lattice paths contained in squares. We define and study several -analogues of these lattice paths, proving combinatorial facts that closely parallel corresponding results for the -Catalan polynomials. We also conjecture an interpretation of our combinatorial polynomials in terms of the nabla operator. In particular, we conjecture combinatorial formulas for the monomial expansion of , the ``Hilbert series' , and the sign character .
