Recently we observed an unusual temperature dependence of the pretilt angle of a nematic liquid crystal generated at the rubbed surface of a side group liquid crystalline polymer film. To understand the mechanism, a detailed investigation of the temperature effect on the rubbing-induced optical phase retardation of a side group liquid crystalline polymer film has been carried out. On heating the film above the glass transition temperature of the polymer, a clear change is seen in the temperature dependence of the optical phase retardation. We infer from this investigation that the thermal variation of the rubbing-induced optical phase retardation results in a change in the temperature variation of the pretilt angle.  相似文献

The conformation of the main-chain (backbone) of a combined main-chain/side-chain liquid crystalline polymer has been qualitatively determined by small angle neutron scattering in the oriented nematic, the smectic A and the smectic C phases. The polymer backbone presents only a weak anisotropy, of prolate shape, in the nematic and the smectic C phases. A stronger reorientation of the backbones in the direction of the applied magnetic field is measured for the SA phase. However, this anisotropy remains small compared to the stretching of a main-chain liquid crystal polymer and the smectic structure results apparently from side-chain ordering. On the other hand, hydrodynamic measurements show that the combined polymer, in solvent, is as flexible as a polystyrene chain. This result is compatible with an explanation for the weak observed anisotropy.  相似文献

The layer structure that occurs in an achiral smectic C liquid crystal device has been investigated as a function of temperature using the small angle X-ray scattering facility at the Synchrotron Radiation Source, Daresbury UK. The material studied shows a direct phase transition from the nematic to the smectic C phase. The layer structure proposed on the basis of the diffraction data is relatively complex, containing regions with chevron, quasi-bookshelf and curved structures. A rationale for the formation of the structure is presented, relying on both the phase transition characteristics of the system and the anisotropic layer elasticity in the smectic C phase. Qualitative analysis indicates that the layer constant A is greater than A 21, i.e. layer flexing is easier perpendicular to the plane of the director than parallel to it. It is also demonstrated that the surface chevron angle is several degrees different from the tilt angle of the smectic C phase at temperatures well below the smectic C to nematic phase transition. 12  相似文献

We examined the effect of an electric field applied during the injection procedure on the polar pretilt angle of a nematic liquid crystal (LC). The pretilt angle of the sample injected at 25°C gradually increased as the electric field was increased. On the other hand, the pretilt angle of a sample injected at 90°C (which is above the nematic-isotropic phase transition temperature of LC) showed a sudden increase in the presence of the electric field and also increased with a greater electric field. We think the alignment layer might be swollen with LC molecules, and the rotation of the immersed LC molecules by the electric field induces a deformation of the alignment layer. These results imply LC and the alignment layer were coupled, and their cooperation had an influence on determining the bulk pretilt angle.  相似文献

A novel alignment method for control of high pretilt angle in nematic liquid crystals (NLC), using a solvent dipping effect on various alignment layers, was successfully investigated. The pretilt angle of a NLC is increased by dipping before rubbing treatment on three kinds of rubbed polyimide (PI) surfaces. The pretilt generated by the dipping after rubbing a PI surface with a short side chain is high compared with a PI surface with a long side chain. The pretilt generated by dipping before rubbing homeotropic layer of a positive type NLC (δε > 0) is lower than that of the negative type NLC (δε < 0). The generated NLC pretilt angle is attributed to the perpendicular component of the permittivity epsilon of the NLC.  相似文献

Several new liquid crystalline materials containing one, two or three chiral centres and having one or two lactate groups in the molecular core have been synthesized. Most of the materials show the blue phase, chiral nematic phase, paraelectric smectic A phase and orthogonal hexatic smectic B phase; some possess the ferroelectric SmC* phase. A study of the mesomorphic properties has been performed using differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The thickness of the smectic layers and the value of the average distance between the long axes of neighbouring molecules were determined. In the SmC* phase, the temperature dependence of spontaneous polarization, spontaneous tilt angle and helical pitch was measured. The influence of the number of lactate groups on mesogenic behaviour has been established.  相似文献

Small angle X-ray scattering was used to examine the new chiral side chain liquid crystalline polyacrylates (P4M and P11M) and their mixtures (2 wt %) in the low molar mass nematogenics 4'-n-pentyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) and 4'-octyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (8CB). Complementary data were obtained by polarizing optical microscopy. In agreement with previous studies, the mesophases of the bulk polymers show a dependence on the aliphatic spacers linking the mesogenic units to the polymer backbone. Chiral nematic and smectic A1 phases were observed for the polyacrylates with four (P4M) and eleven (P11M) methylene units as spacers, respectively. In solution with 5CB and 8CB, P4M exhibits an injected smectic phase, whereas P11M maintains the smectic arrangement already observed in the bulk, with swollen smectic layers. In all the mixtures, layer stability was found to depend on the liquid crystal used as solvent, as well as on the temperature. At temperatures corresponding to the nematic 5CB and 8CB, the coexistence of two mesophases was observed in the mixtures. Moreover, with the liquid crystal solvents in the isotropic phase, microstructures suspended in the solvent matrix containing the liquid crystalline polymer in the smectic arrangement were detected.  相似文献

We investigated pretilt angle generation and liquid crystal (LC) alignment by ultraviolet exposure during the imidization of polyimide (PI). The generated pretilt angle of a nematic (N) LC using an in situ photo-alignment method is smaller than that using a conventional photo-alignment method on a surface of PI having side chains. The NLC pretilt angles using an in situ photo-alignment method injected at isotropic phase increased with annealing were observed.  相似文献

Abstract

Seven new derivatives of 4-octyloxy-N-(4-substituted benzylidene) aniline have been synthesized. 4-Trifluoromethyl and 4-trifluoromethoxy derivatives exhibit stable smectic B and A phases, respectively, while both the 4-methyl and 4-methoxy derivatives have monotropic nematic phases. Fundamental liquid crystalline properties such as entropies of the phase transitions, microscopic textures, smectic layer spacings, orientational order parameters, and molecular dipole moments were determined. It has been revealed that moderately polar nature of these mesogens act to stabilizing monolayer smectic states. The smectic A phase of 4-trifluoromethoxy derivative exhibit very high orientational order. None of the disubstituted compounds, 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl), 3,5-dimethyl, and 3,5-dimethoxy derivatives were mesogenic. The effect of terminal trifluoromethylation on the liquid crystalline properties is discussed.  相似文献

A series of new symmetric dimer compounds was synthesized, constaining 2-hydroxy-1,3-dioxypropylene as the central linkage and terminal alkyl chains with different lengths. The chemical structures of the liquid crystal dimers (2ES-n) were examined by FTIR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Their mesomorphism, thermodynamic properties and optical textures were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing optical microscope and X-ray diffraction. For homologues with terminal propyloxy and butyloxy chains, no liquid crystalline phase was observed. Homologues with pentyloxy and hexyloxy terminal chains showed nematic phases, while those with heptyloxy, octyloxy, nonyloxy and decyloxy terminal chains displayed nematic phases and smectic phases. The results confirmed that the liquid crystalline phase changes from nematic to smectic as the terminal chain length increases.  相似文献

Abstract

The crucial role of the smectic A-nematic transitional order for the formation of the smectic A, B and G phases from an electrically deformed nematic phase of the liquid crystal 4-n-hexyloxy-benzylidene-4′-n-butylaniline (6O.4) with a typical smectic A-nematic first order transition and the formation of the smectic A and B phases from an electrically deformed nematic phase of the liquid crystal (4-n-butyloxy-benzylidene-4′-n-octylaniline (40.8) with a smectic A-nematic second order transition has been demonstrated. The nematic phase was deformed by an AC voltage of 2U,th 5U th and 10U th, where U th is the threshold voltage which causes the appearance of the Fréedericksz transition in the homeotropic nematic layer. The smectic textures have been observed on free cooling of the nematic phase or after the use of an oven. The smectic A phase of the liquid crystal 60.4 was observed with the formation of a clear smectic A-nematic phase boundary while the smectic A phase of the liquid crystal 40.8 has been formed from intermediate pretransitional stripes, observed by Cladis and Torza [1]. The homeotropic anchoring of the direction was crucial for the formation of the smectic phases of the liquid crystal 40.8 but not significant for the liquid crystal 60.4.  相似文献

The pretilt angle in the nematic phase is related to two different surface dependent factors, while the quality of surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) devices is dependent on only one of them. We have synthesized two series of polyalkyleneimides and found that the pretilt angles for thick nematic cells are not related to the cone angles in SSFLC cells.  相似文献

We prepared composites of a liquid crystalline material, 4-pentylphenyl 4-octyloxybenzoate (4PP4OB) and cadmium selenide quantum dots (CdSe-QDs) and investigated their thermodynamic, electro-optical and dielectric properties. The effect of QDs on transition temperature from isotropic to nematic and nematic to smectic A phases was evaluated in this study. The effect of CdSe-QDs inclusion on various display parameters on host liquid crystals was studied in the nematic phase. The electrical parameters of the composites – relative permittivity, dielectric anisotropy, dielectric loss and dielectric relaxation – were investigated in the nematic and smectic phases. The changes in dielectric parameters of the composites are explained in terms of Maier–Meier theory.  相似文献

Three series of tolane-based liquid crystalline compounds with a fluorinated polar end group have been synthesized. Their phase transition temperatures were measured by texture observation in a polarizing microscope and confirmed by DSC. The all-fluorinated trifluoromethyl and trifluoromethoxy group have a tendency to promote the smectic A phase, but the difluoromethoxy group has the tendency to promote a wide nematic phase.  相似文献

The synthesis and phase characterization of three homologous series of liquid crystalline acrylic and methacrylic monomers, consisting of 21 new compounds are presented. They are based on ω-hexyloxy- and ω-undecyloxysalicylaldimine groups with different alkoxy tail substitutions. The liquid crystalline materials were characterized by polarizing optical microscopy and differential thermal analysis. Smectic A and tilted smectic C phases were observed in the compounds. Near the transition to the isotropic, a narrow nematic phase, coexisting with the smectic A phase, was detected for the pentyloxy and hexyloxy derivatives in the M11 and A11 series. In case of M11R11 and M11R12 only a tilted smectic C phase was detected. The clearing point was comparable for all series, around 100°C.  相似文献

The stability of isotropic (I), nematic (N), smectic A (Sm A), and hexatic (Hex) liquid crystalline phases is studied for a fluid of molecules with a rod-like shape and dispersive interactions dependent on orientation. The fluid is modeled with the spherocylindrical Gay-Berne-Kihara interaction potential proposed in a recent work, with parameters favoring parallel pair orientations. The liquid crystal phase diagram is characterized for different molecular aspect ratios by means of Monte Carlo simulations in the isobaric-isothermal ensemble. Three types of triple points are observed, namely, I-Sm A-Hex, I-N-Sm A, and N-Sm A-Hex, leading to island-shape domains for the smectic A phase. The resulting phase diagrams are compared with those derived previously for prolate fluids of ellipsoidal and spherocylindrical symmetry. It is concluded that the stability of the layered phases with respect to the nematic phase is enhanced in the spherocylindrical fluids due to geometrical constraints. Furthermore, the anisotropy of the dispersive interactions induces a stronger dependence of the overall phase diagram on temperature and aids in the energetic stabilization of the hexatic crystalline phase with respect to the fluid smectic A phase.  相似文献

The FT-IR spectra of a thin layer of pure 4-chloro-2'-hydroxy-4'-pentyloxyazobenzene (CHPAB) were studied as a function of temperature. A detailed analysis of the intensity variations was performed by a method based on principal component analysis (PCA). It was shown that the phase transition temperatures obtained by means of PCA and those determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the most widely used technique in the field, were nearly identical. The PCA results revealed that the transition from solid to a liquid crystalline (LC) phase (smectic A) is more drastic phase transition in terms of infrared absorption changes. The nematic to isotropic phase transition is much less infrared sensitive. Very much smaller absorption changes are associated with the transition between the smectic and nematic mesophases. The pattern of the intensity changes strictly is correlated with the orientation of the CHPAB molecules towards the surface windows due to the surface-induced homeotropic alignment of LC molecules. The important role of hydrogen bonding interaction on the observed transition is disclosed.  相似文献
