On the Structure of the C *-Algebra Generated by Toeplitz Operators with Piece-wise Continuous Symbols

We study the C ^*-algebra generated by Toeplitz operators with piece-wise continuous symbols acting on the Bergman space on the unit disk in . We describe explicitly each operator from this algebra and characterize Toeplitz operators which belong to the algebra. To the memory of G. S. Litvinchuk     

On a conjecture of Schmutz

In this work we discuss Schmutz’s conjecture that in dimension 2 to 8 the distinct norms that occur in the lattices with the best known sphere packings are strictly greater than those in any other lattice of the same covolume. We see that the ternary conjecture is not true. However, it seems that there is but one exception: one lattice, where for one length the conjecture fails. Crossed Product of a C *-Algebra by a Semigroup of Endomorphisms Generated by Partial Isometries

The paper presents a construction of the crossed product of a C^*- algebra by a semigroup of endomorphisms generated by partial isometries. This work was in part supported by Polish Ministry of Science and High Education grant number N N201 382634.     

On a Bernoulli-integrable magnetohydrodynamic system

A geometric procedure is used to isolate four Bernoulli integrals for a nonlinear, two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic system. The general solution of the latter may thereby be constructed.

In this article we extend the work on strongly p-embedded subgroups in Parker and Stroth (Strongly p-embedded subgroups, arxiv:0901.0805) to include the Lie type groups of rank 2.     

Embedding an AH-Algebra into a Simple C*-Algebra with Prescribed KK-Data

Let X be a connected finite CW complex. We show that, given a positive homomorphism Hom(K _*(C(X)), K _*(A)) with [1 _C(X)][1 _A ], where A is a unital separable simple C ^*-algebra with real rank zero, stable rank one and weakly unperforated K ₀(A), there exists a homomorphism h: C(X)A such that h induces . We also prove a structure result for unital separable simple C ^*-algebras A with real rank zero, stable rank one and weakly unperforated K ₀(A), namely, there exists a simple AH-algebra of real rank zero contained in A which determines the K-theory of A.     

On automorphisms of A-groups

Let G be an A-group (i.e. a group in which xx ^α  = x ^α x for all and let denote the subgroup of Aut(G) consisting of all automorphisms that leave invariant the centralizer of each element of G. The quotient is an elementary abelian 2-group and natural analogies exist to suggest that it might always be trivial. It is shown that, in fact, for any odd prime p and any positive integer r, there exist infinitely many finite pA-groups G for which has rank r. Received: 23 March 2008, Revised: 20 May 2008     

On the Universal C*-Algebra Generated by a Partial Isometry

A universal C*-algebra is constructed which is generated by a partial isometry. Using grading on this algebra we construct an analog of Cuntz algebras which gives a homotopical interpretation of KK-groups. It is proved that this algebra is homotopy equivalent up to stabilization by 2×2 matrices to M ₂(C). Therefore those algebras are KK-isomorphic.     

A p-adic analogue of a formula of Ramanujan

During his lifetime, Ramanujan provided many formulae relating binomial sums to special values of the Gamma function. Based on numerical computations, Van Hamme recently conjectured p-adic analogues to such formulae. Using a combination of ordinary and Gaussian hypergeometric series, we prove one of these conjectures. Received: 11 April 2008

Estimates for Littlewood-Paley Functions and Extrapolation

We prove certain L ^p -estimates for Littlewood-Paley functions arising from rough kernels. The estimates are useful for extrapolation to prove L ^p -boundedness of the Littlewood-Paley functions under a sharp kernel condition.      

On the frame invariance of linear elasticity theory

It is widely believed that classical linear elasticity theory does not conform to the Galilean frame invariance of general (non-relativistic) field theories. This view is traced here to an interpretation of the relationship between the deformation gradient and the displacement gradient which does not reflect the tensor character of the variables involved. Frame invariance is shown to follow if tensor character is imposed on this relationship at the outset.     

Primitive ideals of locally C*-algebras

This paper is concerned with the connection between the structure space of a locally C*-algebra and the set of its continuous topologically irreducible *-representations. Properties of primitive ideals in such algebras are further investigated, for instance, closed ideals are expressed as intersections of primitive ideals, by using that the Jacobson radical reduces to 0.     

On the thermodynamics of fluids defined by implicit constitutive relations

In this paper, we develop a thermodynamically consistent theory for describing the response of nonlinear viscous fluids whose constitutive equations are of the form f (T, D) = 0. We show that such constitutive equations which include classical constitutive equations wherein the stress is expressed explicitly in terms of the kinematical quantities, provide a rich class of physically meaningful fluid response functions which allows us to describe a wider range of material behavior, including that of a general class of incompressible fluids, incompressible fluids with pressure dependent viscosity, and Bingham (or pseudoplastic) materials.

Linear Functional Equations in Banach Modules over a C *-Algebra

The paper is a survey on the Hyers–Ulam–Rassias stability of linear functional equations in Banach modules over a C ^*-algebra. Its contents is divided into the following sections: 1. Introduction; 2. Stability of the Cauchy functional equation in Banach modules; 3. Stability of the Jensen functional equation in Banach modules; 4. Stability of the Trif functional equation in Banach modules; 5. Stability of cyclic functional equations in Banach modules over a C ^*-algebra; 6. Stability of cyclic functional equations in Banach algebras and approximate algebra homomorphisms; 7. Stability of algebra *-homomorphisms between Banach *-algebras and applications.     

On C(K) Grothendieck spaces

Using the theory of bounded linear operators, several characterizations of C(K) Grothendieck spaces are given. Supported by CDCH of ULA under project 1123-02-05-B 2000.     

Maximal subnear-rings of functions

For a group G, let M(G) denote the near-ring of functions on G. We characterize all maximal subnear-rings of M(G) and show that for many classes of groups, E(G), the near-ring generated by the semigroup, End(G) of G, is never maximal as a subnear-ring of M ₀ (G). Received: 25 April 2008     

On the Calculation of Monogenic Primitives

The theory of functions with values in the algebra of quaternions shows a lot of analogies to the function theory in the complex one-dimensional case. The class of holomorphic functions is replaced by the set of null solutions of a generalized Cauchy-Riemann system, the class of monogenic functions. R. Delanghe described in “On Primitives of Monogenic Functions”, Complex Variables and Elliptic Equations, 51, No. 8-11 (2006) the basic ideas of an algorithm to construct monogenic primitives of the Fueter polynomials. Main goal of this paper is to complete the proposed algorithm for the anti-derivation and to calculate the primitives explicitly.
